Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Defining an OSGeo Ambassador role
suggested that this role should be shared. Conference organisors, who have a primary goal of attracting attendees, look for authoritative figureheads to talk at conferences. They are expected to have a deep insight into a specific domain, such as OSGeo. They should also speak well, even better if they are entertaining. 2. OSGeo is a sexy topic has many conferences, and there are hundreds, if not thousands of conferences around the world which would like to see an OSGeo presence. 3. OSGeo is fortunate to draw membership from around the world, including boasting a number of very healthy local chapters. As such, we are likely to have potential ambassadors in most counties. (We might be a bit short in Antarctica) 4. There are times when negotiating MOUs or similar with other countries, it would be useful to have someone local speak with authority on behalf of OSGeo. 5. Note that there are conflicting interests here of wanting to open up the role for anyone who volunteers, verses maintaining a selectiveness and prestige for the role which is the key selection criteria for conferences asking for an ambassador. As such, I think it important that ambassadors can only be voted into the position, and not handed out to anyone. We already vote for a board, and charter members. I think board members should be considered ambassadors by default. Should charter members be considered ambassadors? Charter members only get this role after demonstrating a commitment to OSGeo, so will likely have a reasonable depth of OSGeo knowledge. Maybe we should ask for a history of speaking well (as demonstrated at conferences), to the ambassador criteria. Then lastly, do we wish to invite ambassadors from a greater circle? At this point, I'd probably err on saying no, as if the entry bar to becoming an ambassador is too easy, then the mystic of the role will be lost. -- Cameron Shorter Geospatial Solutions Manager Tel: +61 (0)2 8570 5050 Mob: +61 (0)419 142 254 Think Globally, Fix Locally Geospatial Solutions enhanced with Open Standards and Open Source http://www.lisasoft.com __**_ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/**mailman/listinfo/discusshttp://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss -- Ing. [OSGeo-Discuss] Board of Directors nomination: Anne Ghisla
Hi all, We would like to nominate Anne Ghisla (from Italy) to the Board of Directors. Anne is very active within the OSGeo community. Among others, We would like to mention some of her activities: - OSGeo Google Summer of Code administrator in 2011 and 2012; - Member of Italian chapter GFOSS.it since September 2007, follower of Francophone chapter too; - Member of QGIS Release Team, Documentation Team and Ecology Toolbox Interest Group; - GRASS GIS core developer; - Co-founder of OSGeo Women Chapter. Some of the above items highlight that Anne has a strong commitment to the empowering of OSGeo, not only from a strict technnical point of view. We know her personally and can say she's a very reliable and helpful person. We really see her as an optimal candidate for the OSGeo Board of Directors. Currently she speaks several languages, such as Italian, French, Englishand a bit of German. She has worked in South Africa for a while and participated to several OSGeo meetups across Europe. Hence she has a quite international background, that allows her to mediate among different points of view of people coming from around the globe. Her skills and experience could contribute to make OSGeo organisation more international and diverse, in sync with the community. Hi, On Wed, Jan 16, 2013 at 5:58 PM, David William Bitner bit...@dbspatial.comwrote: Dave, As indicated by Jeff and Doug, this has not been an issue at any previous FOSS4G event. What has been an issue has been the diversity that we have been able to bring into both our community and our events. We are still a predominantly White European/US/Canadian male community. There has been a lot of work done by many tech conferences to try to make sure that conferences are more welcoming to a more broad array of folks (the rotation of NA/Europe/Elsewhere is one thing FOSS4G has done). The anti-harassment policy follows the lead of others and pulls from the template provided by Geek Feminism http://geekfeminism.wikia.com/index.php?title=Conference_anti-harassment_policy. Additionally following advice from other events as well as many members of our community, we are making the community review process for presentation submission author anonymous as a concern with how we have done this in the past has been the fear that many folks have of feeling publicly shamed with critique and voting of their proposals. These are only two small steps that we are taking to addressing an environment in the overall open source world that by the numbers is very unwelcome to women and other groups (while there have not been any overt issues that I know of as part of any FOSS4G, if you look at the percentage of female conference goers or developers in our community, we do have a long ways to go). Thank you for rising this interesting topic. I don't exactly know why women (according to the numbers) prefer other fields instead of open source software (as I am a woman and I feel comfortable in this community maybe I'm not the right person to ask why other people don't). But I can certainly say why many people don't (can't) join the events.. as I wasn't able to do so as well.. Please don't take it bad, but the FOSS4G event is bloody *expensive* to afford! Hi Arnulf, On Fri, Mar 15, 2013 at 11:31 AM, Seven (aka Arnulf) se...@arnulf.uswrote: -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Folks, I really like the idea of the round table but changed some wording to amend the expectations for it. This was mainly to the effect of avoiding up front misunderstanding which invariably over the past years lead to unnecessary friction. Thank you for that, it sounds way better now. We don't aim to create any friction but to improve the dialog, so smoothing the tone was a good thing IMHO. The whole point of INSPIRE is that there is nobody singly responsible. It has evolved over time and through the contribution of the broadest set of different people from different backgrounds and many are not even involved any more. Therefore we cannot really talk to the people responsible for INSPIRE - there simply are none. To avoid having one side of the table empty I changed members of the INSPIRE Technical Committee to users involved with INSPIRE. Maybe that is too broad, if so please change to something else. Here maybe there was a misunderstanding. With Members of the INSPIRE Technical Committee I meant people from JRC working on the implementation of the technical rules, so if you agree I'd change this in: Members of the JRC INSPIRE Technical Committee. Users involved with INSPIRE are of course welcome as well.. To the same effect I changed discussion (which always results in one winner and one loser) to dialog (which means that people listen to each other and learn from each other). very good. Hope this sits well with you, otherwise feel free to revert to an earlier version. Please note that the Wiki had a hickup when saving two conflicting edits, so one intermediate version is raw HTML. I tried to save the earlier changes, mainly adding Paolo to the list of contributors. Please recheck, if you edited in the past hour or so. Looking forward to seeing some of you at the conference. [OSGeo-Discuss] INSPIRE Conference 2013 - UPDATES on the workshop
Dear All, as correspondent author for the workshop proposal [1], I received an email from the INSPIRE Conference Organisers. Unfortunately, due to time and space limitations, it is possible for them to only choose a small number of the submitted workshops to appear in the programme. Therefore their request was to combine, if possible, our workshop with the one submitted by Simone Giannecchini and Tobia Di Pisa: Hands-on Introduction to create mash-ups for INSPIRE Services with MapStore Simone was in cc in this email. I just had a Skype talk with Simone, and we individuated a couple of possible scenarios: 1) Withdraw one of the two workshops; or 2) Split the 90 minutes at our disposal in two. Of course this decision is up to all the co-authors. In case we decide for the second solution, Simone kindly offered to shrink his time to 30 minutes, in order to allow the round table to take place in 60 minutes comfortably. Yann is a researcher at IWMI [3,9], Visiting Lecturer at University of Colombo [4] and Visiting Lecturer/Consultant at University of Moratuwa [5], Sri Lanka. His research interest lies in water, land and planetary remote sensing [1] . One of his major goals is to provide extensive information on soil and vegetation from remote sensing sources, that are often the only data sources available in developing countries. We (Anne Madi) met Yann at GRASS Community Sprint in Genova in 2013 [6], after many years of email exchange and contributions on GRASS GIS documentation. We had the opportunity to meet him again [7] in GRASS Community Sprint in Prague [8], where we discussed extensively on how open source geospatial software can improve education and land management in Sri Lanka, where he currently lives. We believe that Yann would be a very effective Charter Member. He is a passionate promoter of open source geospatial, a skilled researcher and a great communicator. [OSGeo-Discuss] Nomination for Daniel McInerney
Name: Daniel McInerney Email: daniel.o.mciner...@gmail.com Wiki: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/User:Dmci Hi All, I'd like to nominate Daniel McInerney for charter membership. He is a researcher at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement in Paris with a strong background in forest monitoring using optical remote sensing. He is also a big supporter of Open Science. I had the honor to work with him at the European Commission, JRC [1], where he had been developing open source tools and applications in the context of the European Forest Data Centre [2], the European Forest Fire Information System [3] and the Forestry Work Package of the EuroGEOSS project [4]. Furthermore, he has been working in close contact with the INSPIRE [5] team and is an expert in OGC standards. He's also a proficient GRASS GIS power user and offered his support for the new GRASS website's contents and GRASS tutorial [6]. He is also a power user of GDAL/OGR, QGIS, UMN Mapserver and R Statistics. Daniel is always prompt in offering his help to colleagues and users and his good mood and professionality make him a natural OSGeo advocate. Finally, let me just mention for the sake of OSGeo representation diversity, that, in case of his election, he would be the first representative from Ireland! I propose to not have a (s)election and accept all nominees into Charter membership. I can see no reason that would justify excluding anybody from this great list of nominees and we are still well in scope of our bylaws. [OSGeo-Discuss] #Italy4INSPIRE - We want Italy in the INSPIRE Registry
Dear all, yesterday more than 60 Italian individuals and organisations from both public and private sectors (listed at the bottom of this message) have published on blogs and websites a simple question to the Italian INSPIRE National Contact Point: *Why the CSW service exposed by the Repertorio Nazionale Dati Territoriali (RNDT) has not been yet registered as one of the Italian endpoints in INSPIRE?* The goal is to have (asap) at least one endpoint registered in the INSPIRE Registry. At the moment, indeed, Italy hasn't yet registered any endpoints: http://inspire-geoportal.ec.europa.eu/INSPIRERegistry/ The original text (in Italian) has already been published on the following sites: - http://inspire-forum.jrc.ec.europa.eu/pg/news/micecs/read/242634/i-want-italy-in-the-inspire-register - http://geoportale.regione.emilia-romagna.it/it/notizie/comunicazioni/vogliamo-anche-litalia-nel-registro-inspire - http://www.statigeneralinnovazione.it/online/vogliamo-anche-litalia-nel-registro-inspire/ - http://blog.spaziogis.it/ - http://www.massimozotti.it/ - http://blog.planetek.it/ - http://geo-solutions.blogspot.it/ - http://jgrasstechtips.blogspot.it/ - http://ilsarrett.wordpress.com/ - http://www.kartoblog.it/ - http://www.wister.it/campagna-vogliamo-anche-litalia-nel-registro-inspire/ - http://geofunction.blogspot.it/2014/02/vogliamo-anche-litalia-nel-registro.html - http://cesaregerbino.wordpress.com/2014/02/10/we-want-italy-in-the-inspire-registry/ - http://planetgis.it/feeds?display=default - http://aborruso.github.io/it4insp/ - http://geofemengineering.blogspot.it/2014/02/vogliamo-anche-litalia-nel-registro.html *Rationale of the initiative:* From the legal point of view, both the transposition of the INSPIRE Directive (Legislative Decree 32/2010) and the Codice dell’Amministrazione Digitale defined the RNDT is the national reference in this context : *The national repertoire of spatial data, [... ] is the national catalog of metadata for spatial data sets* (Legislative Decree 32/2010, Article 5). (as also described here: http://www.minambiente.it/pagina/inspire). Moreover, from a technical and operational point of view, the tests carried out in July 2013 and January 2014 by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (upon request of the Agenzia per l’Italia Digitale) have shown that the CSW service and almost all of the metadata harvested are fully compliant to the provisions of Regulations 1205/2008 (metadata) and 976/2009 (network services) of the European Commission, as well as the related Technical Guidelines. Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Gender bias in nominations
Hi, thank you Jeff for having raised this matter, I find it really interesting for the sake of pure data analysis and discussion. I agree with Maria except one single point: is it really important? I think it is. As Maria points out, I agree it is not from OSGeo side that the problem should be addressed, because i don't see any barriers for women approaching OSGeo. On the contrary, it is one of the kindest and welcoming environment. But I think that it would be very interesting to analyse the real causes why women apparently seem not to be attracted by these subjects. I think that there are deeper sociological and practical reasons behind. It would be an interesting exercise to explore the correlation between number of females in open source/technology/science with some drivers such as the perspective of working stability offered by different countries, the facilities for working mothers offered by private and public sectors and so on. I think that exploring such reasons in detail would really help to improve society and to offer real equal opportunities to every citizen. In the long run, it doesn't help increasing female numbers. (It won't be the first time someone thinks I am where I am just because I am female and not because I worked hard.) I'm sorry if I am bothering someone, but I am very picky with all this stuff. It is the eternal discussion about not having enough female in tech organizations. If we want to have more female on OsGeo, we should go to school now to have them in OsGeo in a few years :) Until then, does it really matter? Are we doing things different? Dear All, On Wed, Sep 17, 2014 at 10:51 PM, Jachym Cepicky jachym.cepi...@gmail.com wrote: Just noting, discussion about relationship between LocationTech and OSGeo is here since 2012 (IIRC). That many people did not pain attention to it (actually including myself up to certain time), is not fault of OSGeo .. or LocationTech. It's just actually boring topic. We are community of (mostly) developers and users of FOSS4G (not conference, but software in this case). This sounds like politics .. who would pay attention? So, now we are here, things are happening, we can finally talk to whole community, because of this IMHO *is* important topic - two big organisations are trying to find a way, how to cooperate in the future for better free and open source software for geospatial! This is good. If for nothing else, then for clarifying OSGeo's position. If anyone is wondering why most charter members remained silent about the topic, here i can offer my 2 cents.. It is true that this is a long story, but it's hard to find all the elements needed for judgement. I'd ask those that have personally followed the steps, to kindly fill a wiki page with the most important facts. Another thing is that, for those that couldn't make it at FOSS4G, it is (I believe) not easy to understand on what exactly the community of charter members is being called to express their opinion. What does it mean to cooperate and what does it imply for the organizations involved? Is it a case by case cooperation what you're talking about? why it looks like is the FOSS4G event at stake here? [OSGeo-Discuss] INSPIRE tools inventory
Dear All, sorry for cross posting this message to discuss and standard MLs. I would like to make an inventory of the tools and components aiding the INSPIRE implementation that are available as FOSS. To do so, I have created a wiki page [1] and I'm here asking your help in filling it. A lot of valuable pieces of software are being developed and they could be ideally reused without reinventing the wheel all the times. I think that eventually this exercise will benefit everyone interested in reusing INSPIRE components. Thank you for your cooperation! [OSGeo-Discuss] Preparation of ideas pages for GSoC 2015 (deadline: 18th February!)
Dear All, *GSoC 2015* was officially announced earlier this year. The applications for mentoring organizations are now open and this year Hamish Bowman and myself will be applying for OSGeo's participation. The application deadline for mentoring organizations is the 20th of February, and right after that, Google will proceed examining the organizations. The showcase for evaluating the applications are the *GSoC ideas pages* [1], and for this reason, they need to be in perfect shape. This means that OSGeo teams are required to set up and shape their pages this week, coordinating their teams through their dev mailing lists. The pages will then linked to the main GSoC 2015 ideas page on the wiki. Please bear in mind that there is no guarantee whatsoever of the acceptance by Google based on the success of previous years, but they will judge the organizations only on the basis of ideas pages for 2015. Please forward this email to your project leaders and past GSoC mentors, and start listing ideas right away! Please cc soc list with your doubts and questions. [OSGeo-Discuss] Discussion on statement : avoiding slang. Was: Drafting a Diversity statement for the foundation (call for input)
Dear Cameron, All, thank you for your work on the diversity statement, I appreciate this initiative of OSGeo. I'm opening this thread to discuss one aspect of the statement, which is language diversity. The draft of the code of conduct currently reads: We have a multi-lingual community and are considerate toward non-native speakers, such as by speaking clearly and avoiding slang. I acknowledge the good intention behind this sentence, but as a non native English speaker I don't feel comfortable with it. I have some experience in living and working in a multi-language environment, and one of the most enriching experience is to learn from my peers about their languages and ways of expressing. Personally, I don't feel as a barrier that a person uses expressions / idioms / slang in their email, on the contrary, I would learn that. I believe that the main goal of people writing in a public forum is to be understood by the widest public, thus everyone, according to their command of the language, will try to express themselves as best they can. On the other hand, putting as a requirement that the English should be clear, would forbid the expression of the people that are aware of their non excellence in the language. My 2 cents, madi -- Best regards, Dr. Margherita DI LEO Scientific / technical project officer European Commission - DG JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability (IES) Via Fermi, 2749 I-21027 Ispra (VA) - Italy - TP 261 Tel. +39 0332 78 3600 margherita.di-...@jrc.ec.europa.eu Disclaimer: The views expressed are purely those of the writer and may not in any circumstance be regarded as stating an official position of the European Commission. ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[OSGeo-Discuss] OSGeo accepted to GSoC 2015 - overview of slot assignments
Dear All, it is our pleasure to announce that *OSGeo has been accepted as mentoring organization* also this year! [1] The OSGeo GSoC Team has been reshaped with respect to former communications, and it's now composed by myself (Madi) in the role of primary admin and the experienced Anne Ghisla in the role of co-admin. Now it's time for prospecting students to carefully browse the list of ideas and contact developers team of their interest. Mentor registration is not yet open and will be announced in due time. Students can officially apply on Melange from 16th to 27th of March. All, do keep an eye (and a calendar client reminder) on all *GSoC 2015 dates* [2]! This year, we will be using slightly different *procedure for assigning slots* to selected projects. The experience from previous years made it possible to define the criteria that will be applied this year, and hopefully will be improved in the future: 1. Each project requires at least *two mentors*. The soundness of the project, the selection of reliable mentors and student is responsibility of its community. However, this year we strongly encourage the community to assign to the wannabe-GSoC-student some small programming tasks or bug fixes, in order to be sure that (s)he is familiar with the selected software, the programming environment, version control system, mailing list, etc and can code. Particular attention should be paid in the selection of mentors that *won't disappear* in the course of the GSoC. 2. Each OSGeo software will have *one* slot assigned, provided that the conditions at point 1 are met. 3. Like previous years, OSGeo will host some like-minded projects that requested it, and will assign *1* slot to each guest, provided that the conditions at point 1 are met. 4. This year we want to encourage projects that entail the* integration between two or more OSGeo software*. For this reason, one extra slot will be assigned to (sound) projects that aim at integrating two or more software, provided that mentors of respective communities are involved. 5. If the number of slots will allow it, extra slots can be assigned to projects that have gained a good *rate of success* in the course of past years (reliable -not disappearing- mentors, student success, etc). Further discussion on specific slot assignments will take place among mentors in due time. This is the admins outline of this year's criteria. Please send answers to this announcement* to soc [3] list*, and forward this mail to all relevant mailing lists of your knowledge. *And now, let s do this thing!* *http://tinyurl.com/l32yzgp http://tinyurl.com/l32yzgp* Yours enthusiastically, Madi and Anne OSGeo GSoC Admins 2015 [1] http://google-opensource.blogspot.it/2015/03/mentoring-organizations-for-google.html [2] https://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/events/google/gsoc2015 [3] http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/soc -- Best regards, Dr.

Re: [OSGeo-Discuss] Code of Conduct in Real Case
Hi, On Wed, Jun 24, 2015 at 2:08 PM, Milo van der Linden m...@dogodigi.net wrote: Hi Sanghee, Thank you for taking this matter to the discuss mailinglist. My first reaction when clicking the links from your post was, no problem, this is well accepted from my european perspective and I do not directly see any offense in them nor see any offense in other cultures. However, after looking at them in context (in the slideshare presentation) this is my opinion. 1. I don't understand the slides with the Dali painting. What do you want to say with them? In my opinion they can be removed without downgrading the presentation. 2. In my opinion; the slide with the header Culture showing the row of female models will bring a better message with another picture. Currently I interpret this slide as: Come to Korea for the beautiful women and I believe that is not the message you want to send under the header Culture. 3. There are a few slides with a lot of prominently displayed alcoholic drinks, in one slide, it even looks like a drinking game. There are a lot of cultures that are offended by that too. Simply removing them, again, would not make your presentation worse, it would make it stronger. Final thought: I agree with the request for removal/replacement but I think you should also do something about the alcoholic drinks given this presentation holds a prominent position on the main page for the foss4g event. This would make your presentation stronger, because apart from this minor thing, it is an interesting slideshow that has me interested in going to Seoul! looking at the presentation, I got exactly the same feeling as expressed so well by Milo. Personally, I don't feel offended by this presentation as a woman. However, due probably to my limitations, I don't get the messages that you (Sanghee) meant to deliver, otherwise than the one expressed by Milo. I support the idea that, due to the prominent placing of your presentation, it is extremely important that the message conveyed is agreed upon by the majority of the community, because somehow it does represent not only your personal view, but the shared view of the community. re to Jeroen: I don't think that the CoC itself caused the rising of this issue, on the contrary, it formalized a statement of how the majority of the community thinks it is right to behave... I think it is there to help, not to create problems.. just my 2 cents -- Best regards, Dr.

Dear OSGeo Community, we are pleased to inform you that Google has announced GSoC 2016 [1,2]. In case OSGeo gets accepted as mentoring organisation, we (madi[3]) are considering to admin also this year. If there are more volunteers, this is the right time to show up and contact us, this list, or the dedicated soc list [4] before February, 2016. See the timeline here [5]. I don’t see that it does. > > A lot of food for thoughts here! I fully agree that the community would survive without OSGeo, as well as local chapters. From my point of view this is an important sign that the community is resilient, and the horizontal structure of OSGeo fits well with it. But this does not imply that OSGeo is an added value for the community, and I think an important one. There are a number of activities that benefit from an umbrella organization. One is the Google Summer of Code, just to cite an example that I know. It would be possible as well for the single projects to participate on their own, but this would mean organizational burden multiplied for the number of the projects. Further, even the participation of a large org like OSGeo is not given for granted, for example this year an important org like Mozilla was not accepted [1]. Smaller projects might have reduced possibility to take part. Other important examples include initiatives like Geo4All, the education committee, the FOSS4Gs, etc.. I don't even want to try to mention all of them. I also think that there is (as always happens) room for improvement. But remember that all the activities are carried out by volunteers. I think that for example OSGeo could provide a sort of reimbursement for the time spent by the volunteers working at the server infrastructure behind the web site and the mailing lists, and could potentially think to stipend other key figures. OSGeo could for example offer first legal advice for the companies who decide to release their code under a free license. Could even offer an infrastructure to gather and keep the money for the various projects.. I am not well informed about the implication of the bylaws and whether all this is possible or not. I think that all these (and more) activities would give more sense to the umbrella role. But these are not for free, therefore there should be a decision behind whether OSGeo wants to invest in this direction. We ask your cooperation to set up the ideas page within few days. It is extremely important that the ideas page looks in good shape as it is the key page Google will be looking at when evaluating OSGeo. As usual, each community will set up its ideas page on its own wiki and will send us the link, that will be added by us to the main page [2]. Please forward this email to your communities.
