[slim] Re: A slicker UI for SlimServer?
The existing web skinning format is too limiting to really allow major functional changes in the UI w/o having to get into the Perl that generates the data for the skin in the first place. I would love to see a SOAP interface for slimserver. It would be a great way to provide a simple and flexible access layer to build apps with. Given that, I think we'd see a lot more interface options pop-up from the os community. Plus, it'd give an avenue for better interaction with other applications down the road. -- Super-Gonzo ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The Web interface may not be that pretty, but for simply selecting and playing an album, its functional and easy to work out. I agree though, a proper app would be really nice. Perhaps once the threading issues have been sorted out in a future release, to seperate the database, streaming and GUI components, it might be easier to build additional UI's. I would imaging that the web UI would stay in the default installation to support all platforms, but a third party may provide smaller dedicated GUIs. Eg. maybe a simple UI to start/stop/pause/ffd/rewind, and another one to select music to play. In fact new UI applications can be written now that use the CLI to get information and perform actions. You have two subproblems here. On SB1/g and SB2, the characters are bit mapped graphics. So you can change the bitmaps and get new, upside down graphics. Pretty easy. But then you have to make the characters flow backwards. I don't know if the code to support right-to-left character streams is finished. It is needed to support Hebrew, Arabic, and some other encodings. I think I'd go for velcro on the top and not bother looking at the underside. Why not build in a cubby-hole or a small shelf hanging under the counter and just leave the SB2 right-side-up. There isn't much heat generated by the device, but there is some. Yes, PM can write the partition table w/out affecting the partition data. I hedged on the "fix" of the partition map - my thinking was that when PM wrote out the partition table, it might overwrite the info that's causing XP trouble. I can't say with certain recollection, but I believe I've done exactly this in the past. PM and other utilities can do all sorts of things to the partition table, so your goal would be to change some unimportant aspect (label, type), write out the table, change back and write the table yet again. Not knowing how old is "old", i'd suggest using sysreccd instead or your old PM. Earlier PMs were not XP compatible w/out patches. -- MrC ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

There is an image of SlimServer available on the Infrant website. You download it to a local machine and then the ReadyNas software has a facility for uploading updates that will install the SlimServer. Reboot the ReadyNAS and you're running. Infrant has an application for talking to their box but you can also simply use a web interface at ip.address/admin. For the slimserver, you simply supply the port interface, by default, ip.address:9000 >From there, you're simply interacting with SlimServer. A few skins are included, I haven't played around with too much. Most of the ReadyNAS boxes come with 128MB of RAM. The Infrant engineers had made the claim that not much performance improvements happened above 256MB before they began to distribute SlimServer. They haven't done much work yet with SlimServer but they suggested that more memory was probably a good idea, especially if you were using jumbo frames and gigabit ethernet. It was pretty cheap so I just dropped a 512MB DIMM into the box. My music library is about 150 GB, FLACs and high bit rate MP3 and performance is fine. Infrant has a forum linked off the support page of their website and they are very quick to respond to any sort of questions. -- BillC ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
RE: [slim] Updating Slim Server?
I just use symbolic links. unpack the tar ball to say /usr/src/Slimserver_6.x.x ln -s /usr/src/Slimserver_6.x.x /usr/local/slimserver Just make sure your startup script points to /usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl (for this example). this allows you to keep a few versions of Slim around with thier origional names and dates incase an upgrade goes bad and your start up scripts won't need to be changed. You will probably also want to use command line options in the startup script to specify cashe dir, preferences, log file ect.. I put all of this in the slimserever users home directory. Matt I am running 6.0.2 on Linux. How do I install 6.1.1? Do I simply unzip the tar into the existing Slim Server directory overwriting whats there or should I delete the contents first? Do I need to update Perl as well? [slim] Playing all songs in folder
Hi, I am using a SB (not the SB2) and recently upgraded to the 6.1 server. Since the upgrade, whenever I try to play the songs in a folder (via Browse Music Folder), it just plays the first song and stops. In the server settings, I of course have the ´Play other songs in album´ option checked. This reminds me of an earlier thread, but there it was concluded the problem only holds for albums, not for folders. Maybe I am overlooking something trivial? First, thank you for the info. Your instinct matches my conclusion. However, do you think it's possible to "clean up" the partition table on the drive without removing the data?
