I'm not so sure.

I agree that if you have an "intermission" type forum (name stolen from
Remote Central) then it will degrade to lots of political and nosense
posting. However, you don't have to go there.

On the upside, I think it increases the felling of community when
people can just chat.
It's not really my thing, but I can see why it would be popular, and if
you don't like it, don't go into that forum.

As long as slimdevices can spare the disc and bandwidth, what's the

While we are heading off into the blue sky, what about
this..

In the "greatest hits" folder you have a very short MP3 file. (or flac
or whatever).

It has no music in it.

It does have the tags that are relevant to that instance of the file,
then a "new magic" tag, that points to the actual file to use for the
audio portion.

Doable ?

When I brought my Linksys WRT54G to troubleshoot, no problems

It appears that some routers WEP/WPA are not compatible

2005-11-08 Thread oreillymj

How about this as a suggestion.

With an option - "Enable Virtual Tracks" enabled.
Playlists in the playlist folder are treated as normal.

Playlists within the music folder (in an album dir) as treated as
virtual tracks for that album.

Comments could be added into the m3u file to override the information
inherited from the tags in the real file. Default behaviour is to
inherit all info from the real file.

e.g. I have a Massive Attack album.
I also have several Chill Out compilations with Massive Attack tracks.
I create a playlist in the ChillOut Album dir.

#EXTM3U
#
#TRACKNO=1
#ALBUM=Chill Out Volume 1
#YEAR=INHERIT
#
\Documents and Settings\Michael\My Documents\My Music\MP3\Massive
Attack\Protection\04 Weather Storm.mp3
#
#TRACKNO=6
#ALBUM=Chill Out Volume 1
#YEAR=INHERIT
#
\Documents and Settings\Michael\My Documents\My Music\MP3\Massive
Attack\Protection\05 Spying Glass.mp3

In this case the Album name and track position are being overridden.
The year is being inherited from the year of the Massive Attack album,
not the compilation, but this the defaul behaviour anyway.
The comment tag format would have to be documented. It could also be
optimized to make it easier to parse.

Feedback?

Should I log an enhancement request?

One of the most requested SlimServer enhancements is a more flexible
means of sorting & grouping in the various browse modes. Here's how to
do this in the meantime, though there are some minor limitations:

Add an ALBUMSORT tag to all tracks (TSOA tag in id3 tags). Populate
that tag with the artist name, followed by the album name. I prefer to
have an artist's albums sorted chronologically, so I also insert the
year before the album name. For example:

Amos, Tori|2005|Beekeeper
Beatles|1965|Rubber Soul
Beatles|1966|Revolver
Beatles|1968|Beatles [White Album]
Beatles|1969|Abbey Road
Cooder, Ry|1972|Into the Purple Valley
Newsome, Joanna|2004|Milk-Eyed Mender
Sexton, Martin|1996|Black Sheep

The only drawback to doing this is that in Browse Albums you'll get the
same sort order - by artist instead of album title. Fine with me, as I
find browsing by album title to be pretty much useless.

Once you have a Java Runtime Environment installed the "bloat" that you

already have one installed.

The traffic volume on this list/forum is what I'd call heavy,
well over 100 messages a day. I remember when Sean
claimed that the list was low volume.

I'm of two views, self conflicting as it were. On one hand,
the volume will lower naturally over time, we just had the SB3
product release/announcement, and there is always a huge spike
when a new version comes along. I think the volume will
decrease to an acceptable level pretty quickly, especially
if we don't have meta postings like this one.

And while I love to snark about iPods or the stupidity of the RIAA,
and these topics really are off topic for a SqueezeBox/SlimServer
mailing list, so they should be banished to a "coffeehouse" type
subforum, I'm not sure that creating a "banter" forum/list
is a good idea. Such lists tend to degrade into noise and
politics, soon to be followed by a descent described in
Goodwin's Law. I think the internet has a sufficient number
of blogs, forums and newsgroups dedicated to nothing, already.

I believe that some have reported problems with the Belkin router when UPNP was enabled.  If you do not need UPNP, maybe try disabling it in your router and see if it helps.Otherwise, you might be running into bandwidth issues because you are streaming two streams over wireless.  You didn't say what format your music is -- is it MP3, lossless or a transcoded format (AAC)? I wouldn't think you could reliably and effectively stream many more than two or three SB2's with lossless formats over a

Mike,

The thing to keep in mind with Slimserver is that although it is not
the most beautiful interface in the world it is completely cross
platform, you can run the web browser on Linux/MacOS/Windows, etc.

To develop a "slick gui front end" would either have to be a bloated
java effort to keep the cross platform ability or it would have to be
restricted to windows/mac users only.

I think using iTunes as a front end is a good compromise and it's not
Slim's fault that Apple has made it very difficult to interface with
the iTunes backend with 3rd party apps.

Warnings
The playback buffer for this player is occasionally falling lower than

drop at the end of each track. You may see this warning if you are
playing lots of short tracks. If you are hearing audio dropouts, please
check our network signal strength.

Your server response time is occasionally longer than desired. This may
cause audio dropouts, especially on Slimp3 and Squeezebox1 players. It
may be due to background load on your server or a slimserver task
taking longer than normal.

Player Performance : BarThe graphs shown here record the long term
trend for each of the player performance measurements below. They
display the number and percentage of measurements which fall within
each measurement band.

It is imporant to leave the player playing for a while and then assess
the graphs.

Player Signal Strength
This graph shows the strength of the wireless signal received by your
player. Higher signal strength is better. The player reports signal
strength while it is playing.

Buffer Fullness
This graph shows the fill of the player's buffer. Higher buffer
fullness is better. Note the buffer is only filled while the player is
playing tracks.
Squeezebox1 uses a small buffer and it is expected to stay full while
playing. If this value drops to 0 it will result in audio dropouts.
This is likely to be due to network problems.

Squeezebox2 uses a large buffer. This drains to 0 at the end of each
track and then refills for the next track. You should only be concerned
if the buffer fill is not high for the majority of the time a track is
playing.

Playing remote streams can lead to low buffer fill as the player needs
to wait for data from the remote server. This is not a cause for
concern.

taking longer than normal.

This is not a cause for
concern.

Server PerformanceThe graphs shown here record the long term trend for
each of the server performance measurements below. They display the
number and percentage of measurements which fall within each
measurement band.
Server Response Time
This graph shows the length of time between slimserver responding to
requests from any player. It is measured in seconds. Lower numbers are
better. If you notice response times of over 1 second this could lead
to problems with audio performance.
The cause of long response times could be either other programs running
on the server or slimserver processing a complex task.

Talk about loaded words!

First, the subtitle of this forum is: "The Kitchen Sink"

Second, "Digressing"??.an immediate value judgment.

Third, "philosophical"?.so if a conversation digresses it becomes
useless which is a synonym for philosophical, right? I can't wait to
tell a couple of professors I know in the University of Washington
Philosophy department.

Fourth, "banter"??my dictionary defines that word as meaning "Light

Hi Sean,

When you say the next nightly, are your referring to the beta 6.5
version? I'm running 6.2.1 with no problems and memory usage of 53K but
I do shut my PC down each night so it's restarted daily.

Thanks for a great product!

It shouldn't be up to Apple to support this product. Yes, Apple should
support FLAC, but that's a different issue. (And of course, they never
will anyway.)

I just think the Squeezebox is cool enough to warrant a really cool
front end -- it's own front end, not iTunes. It can't be that hard to
develop a program for this, can it?

For what it's worth, I'd be glad to pay another $50 or whatever for a
really slick GUI. Preferably, it would let me:

1) Show all my songs on one scrollable screen, with the ability to
order them by artist/song/album/genre/size/time/whatever;

2) Use drag and drop to make playlists;

3) Use my mouse to fast-forward/rewind through songs;

in addition to all the slimserver-specific functions and options.

There are numerous programs out there that do this kind of thing, is it
really that hard to make?

[slim] Wanted: Suggestion for SlimServer Setup

2005-11-08 Thread agentsmith

First off I am totally Unix Blind. My friend has helped me to
successfully convert my Buffalo LanStation 250GB LAN HDD running
SlimServer 6.1X.

The LANStation is connected via 100Mbps FE and so is the Squeezebox2.
I have so far dumped 2,200 FLAC songs into the LANStation, the result
is satisfactory but response from the SB2 is laggy and even slower with
a Browser.

I have tried running SlimServer with an old Thinkpad X20 and a T30
laptop and the performance is much better, especailly with re-scanning.
However, the laptop is connected wirelessly with WiFi (802.11G) and
storage is limited to about 100GB.

My question is, is it feasible (performance wise)to run the SlimServer
from a 802.11G or worse, 802.11Blaptop and accessing the music from the
LANStation via the LAN? Will the performance be better then running
directly off the LANStation with FE and slow CPU?

i.e.

LANStation
250GB --FE--SB2
FLAC
|
|
WiFi
|
|-Laptop
w/SlimServer

I am UNIX blind and is much more comfortable with the Windows. If
anyone has tried running it this way I would be interested in your
experience.

[slim] Re: 6.2 & SLIMP3 (original)

2005-11-08 Thread Triode

Free Lunch,

Regarding measuring performance of 6.2. The 6.2 server includes a
plugin which collects statics on server performance - including the
response time of the server to requests from players.

If you want to post details of the measurements here [or on another
thread] I would be happy to help diagnose what they are saying in terms
of server performance.

The information is available from Help -> Server and Network Health.
The plugin was written with Squeezebox players in mind and so you don't
get all the information with a Slimp3, but the stats for the server are
still collected.

[slim] "Modified" SB3

2005-11-08 Thread davep

Just received my SB3 and I am very impressed with the new design - it
matches much better with my hi fi components than the SB2. However I
am not completely sold on the backwards lean of the unit so have made
one modification to the design - the insertion of an empty CD case
beneath the back of the foot which serves to bring the face of the SB3
into the vertical plane and provide a more seamless integration with
the components on which it is stacked.

It also strikes me how eminently suitable the new design is for wall
mounting. I'm sure that with the right kit it would be perfect on, or
even in, a wall to give a discrete controller for music in a room.

A big thanks to Sean and the team for this latest generation of SB, I'm
sure that with the right postioning this could be the music streamer of
choice for the home digital music replay market.

Ok, I'm not saying that the i-Pod doesn't have it's good points, but
what I am saying is that it has quite a few drawbacks that most people
don't even comprehend when they buy into the thing.

Because the iPod has such a high % of the market it becomes the future
for everyone, even those who do not want to subscribe to Apple's.
Healthy competition is good for everyone.

Yes there are crappy bands that don't deserve album sales on the back
of 1 good song, but equally it worries me that smaller selling acts
will be unable to release of physical formats as the margins won't be
high enough.

Finally, it bugs me the way everyone seems to react as if Steve Jobs
has just found the cure for cancer (yes I know he beat cancer) when he
announces that Toshiba have shrunk their Hard disk's and he's shaved
1mm of the height of thing.

People are free to own whatever player they like, think whatever they
like and completely diagree with me.

True, proposing anything other than FLAC is a sin.
And I ripped my whole collection into flac from the beginning.

But if I had done it once in high quality MP3, I would
think long and hard about redoing some groups of CDs
(i.e. genres where sound quality is not all that important),
just to avoid handling all the blasted CDs again.

For me, a lot of pop/rock doesn't really need it.
but my jazz and classical does. Someone else might
have exactly the opposite view.

Personally, if I was in your position (having ripped to MP3 my whole
collection and re-tagged everything) then I'd seriously considier doing
some listening tests to make sure all the work of re-ripping is worth
it. Several blind tests have found that Lame MP3s with an alt.preset
setting can not be differentiated from the original (or FLAC). If it
doesn't sound better to you then its not worth it. A decent stereo
probably less to do with it than how good your ears are... and clearly
thats a personal choice.

Having said that, I also use FLAC as I don't want to rip my CDs ever
again... and space is cheap.

For future reference (especially if ripping straight to Mp3), you're
better off editing your tags in EAC before you rip. Then if you need to
re-rip again in the future, EAC will remember the updated tags for that
CD.

I hate Apple's marketing 'spin'. You'd imagine that they'd invented
everything, rather than just being slightly late with slightly
overpriced alternatives.

I like the way some of their kit looks.

I hate the way the media fawns over ipod and anything apple.

I needed a music player

I bought an ipod for one reason. 60GB.

Shame I now find out it can't string two songs together without
inserting a gap. How long have they been doing music players?

[slim] Re: Amusing, somewhat off topic iPod comment

2005-11-08 Thread jmpage2

There are applications out there that allow you to download non-DRM
encoded versions of songs directly from the iTunes store, the only
difference is that you are using a front-end developed by a non-Apple
programmer and are probably violating some obscure EULA from Apple by
not using their storefront to get the songs (and forcing you into
DRM).

I've had no problems downloading these tracks and playing them on my
Squeezebox. As unfortunate as it is, DRM is here to stay as it's the
only viable solution to the music industries dead distribution model.
Eventually there will hopefully be some capabilities of
interoperability between devices or cheap licensing to playback DRM
protected tracks.

And on the bright side, Apple pioneered the whole "buy the tracks you
want" concept. I really used to hate buying an entire $15 CD for 1-2
decent tracks and the rest being junk.

Lastly, I'm not an Apple lackey. I've used a ton of different MP3
players over the years, most recently trading in my thick brick of a
Rio Karma for the new video iPod. Although the new iPod has a few
drawbacks, the advantage of the smaller size alone makes it worth it
for me to have one. I can easily walk around with it in the front
pocket of my blue jeans and it's not uncomfortable in the least,
compared to the Rio, which was so thick as to be actually painful to
walk around with in a pair of jeans.

2005-11-08 Thread blueranger

Wow - finally got to the bottom of the problem. Having spent most of the
weekend and yesterday evening tinkering. It turns out it was nothing to
do with the 6.2 update! Apologies for leaping to conclusions and
blaming the new release.

First thing I did was to back-rev to 6.1.1, delete the database and
rebuild from scratch. After nearly 2 hours the database had stopped
growing but the scan had not finished. Then spent a few hours scanning
the directories for bad rips/damaged mp3s etc. Moved out over 40 of
these and did another scan - no change.

I then decided to download a copy of sqlite and have a look inside the
database. Being a complete amateur with sql it took a while to grasp
what was going on. Then the lightbulb suddenly came on and I realised
that the last entry in the database could be identified and probably
pointed to the directory with the problem (or the one before the
problem).

The last entry was id 2207 pointing to a UB40 album. I checked the
directory and there it was! - a link/shortcut to the top level
directory! Poor old slimserver had been getting this far and then
starting again, over and over!

So, there we are. A simple mistake caused hours of fun. My neighbour is
pleased he has access to his full music collection and I can finally get
back to listening to my Squeezebox. Sorry once again for blaming the 6.2
release.

I think it is a Windows only problem. Read the last lines.

>From the KB.
For example, if Wake-on-LAN is enabled on your computer, the computer
resumes (or awakens) from standby or hibernation when it receives an
ICMP Echo Request (ping request) from the network. After two minutes,
if no other activity or ping requests from the network occur, the
computer automatically returns to standby or hibernation.

This occurs because Wake-on-LAN is typically configured to return your
computer to standby or hibernation after two minutes of inactivity.

My server (perl version) on XP Pro does the same. I noticed it at
240MB the other day, restarted the server and it began again at 55MB.
It's back to about 175MB now.

I think your post summarized the situation quite well. There is no
standard. Not only does SlimServer have to deal with the 101 ways that
101 other applications interpret id3 tags, it has to correlate those
with tags used in tagging systems for other codecs like FLAC, APE, all
the Apple types, Windows types, etc. Few of those have any real
standards either.

Dan thinks this is a recursive Windows shortcut causing slimserver to

[slim] Re: Standard MP3 tags

2005-11-08 Thread Rik

I did find the tags "conductor" and "band/orchestra" in SlimServer. I am
a bit confused about both tags and the MP3 standard.

- I use MediaMonkey for tagging. In that application, "conductor" is
not available and "band/orchestra" is called "albumartist".

- I tried JJ MP3 renamer. There, I have "conductor" but I cannot access
nor see the "band/orchestra" field.

- In SlimServer, both "conductor" and "band/orchestra" are available.

- iTunes uses the field "band/orchestra" for obtaining artist data.

- Windows Media Player uses both but calls it "album artist".

- Collectorz MP3 collector has both fields "conductor" and
"band/orchestra" (and they are called that way).

- My MP3 player (creative zen sleek) doesn't know both fields.

Anyone who can explain what I'm misunderstanding? Any hints for the
"ultimate" tag edit application?

Thanks,

Rik

This isn't actually a MySQL setting - but one for computers with poor virtual

Since the new firmware does the WMA ecoding on the SB, my slimserver is
going into powersave since not enough activity is generated from the SB

exact ;-). This is particularly anoying when listening to Internet
radio streams based on WMA, since I then have to do a WOL to the server
just to adjust the volume or change to a different stream :-/

Both Windoze and LINUX based boxes must have this problem of entering
powersave mode/runlevel whatever with the new firmware!

30 minutes) it might give enough activity to keep the computer from going into
standby as long as the server is running. I haven't tested this, and have
suggested a couple times with no feedback. Let us know if that has any
effect.

2005-11-08 Thread Jim

The way I see it, if there wasn't people wasting their money buying
iTunes DRM stuff then my iPod would have cost more money or not even
been made in the first place.

I don't like Mictosoft yet still run Windows, so don't assume I like
Apple (maybe you saw the avatar) just because I have an iPod.

Speed is subjective but I would say it is fast enough, it is what I was
expecting and compares to my PDA. Apps load in a few seconds and the
browse artwork loads in 5 or 6 seconds (handheld skin).

It should be an optional activity, however, since it's meant to
compensate for a bug in Microsoft code. I assume Linux boxes don't have
the same problem, i.e. it doesn't sound like a hardware issue but a
software one.
