[slim] Re: Squeezebox Or Glorified PC?
Well, this could go on for a while, because I think we are all discussing our own requirements and preferences, and in this we are all different (cry from the guy in the corner: I'm not! ) My view, FWIW, is that if I have a need for a computer in a particular spot then I won't be buying an SB. There are 4 people in my house, we all have computers, we all access the common music library: I use Softsqueeze or foobar, the others use iTunes. But in rooms where is no computer, I definitely want a Squeezebox. So far we have one in the main living room and one in the kitchen - I can't imagine wanting anything as ugly as a computer in either of those places. Maybe the bedroom is next, I don't know. This way we have what we really want - music EVERYWHERE! Fantastic. [slim] A thank you to Slim Devices
I received my SB3 a couple of days ago, and apart from an error message about a missing perl58.dll (which didn't seem to matter?), everything installed very, very easily. (I use Win XP, with no service packs.) Anyway, the SB3 is a clean and beautiful design to look at, and the way the user interface has been designed to get the most of the limited display area is fantastic! (Although the display is relatively huge, it is not a PC-monitor!) The open server source tops it all off nicely! All-in-all: Fantastic! P.S: Currently my ageing laptop (500MHz when on battery) acts as a server, doing transcoding on the fly from AAC while communicating via wifi (11 Mbit!) between both laptop and SB3, and it all works fine. I'm a bit late arriving at this discussion, but anyway: I already have a PC in the lounge, running Windows Media Center Edition 2005, hooked up to a 42 plasma and a decent surround sound system. So I decided I didn't need a Squeezebox - I could just use the PC instead. But I came across the following problems: 1) Unfortunately MCE2005 doesn't support FLAC (and almost all my music is in FLAC format) 2) The MCE2005 music browser is painfully slow (yes, worse than SlimServer!!). 3) Its a right pain having to turn on the plasma screen just to play music. And once the music's playing, do I leave the screen switched on (burning a static image into the screen), or switch it off (and not know what track is playing)? In the end, I just bought a Squeezebox because its so much more convenient! For music I use the Squeezebox, and for TV and DVD I use the PC. And when I'm watching TV, the Squeezebox makes a great clock... Running Softsqueeze on the PC wouldn't really be feasible for me, since its impossible to control with a remote. Although I suppose I could buy a web tablet instead, and control Softsqueeze via the web interface??? But I'd still have the problem of whether to leave the screen on or off. Chris, Before buying a SB3 I was considering building a DIGN X15E HTPC with MCE with a build in LCD touchscreen. So I could replace my VCR, playing MP3's, and watching movies. (see: http://tinyurl.com/95z9k) But after reading a lot stories with MSC problems, drivers do not work after an update, and numerous other problems. And most important the MCE interface isn't the most friendly one (my wife has to make use of it as well) I'd decided for a SB3 first and look further for a more stable solution. Perhaps this is a solution for you. [slim] Softsqueeze and WAV file
I am new to this forum, so hello everybody. I have been trying to get Softsqueeze running, as I explored the new features of Slim Server 6.2.1. It works ok on MP3 files but when it comes to uncompressed WAV, I get loads of Buffer underruns (as visible in the log page), if I enable the display of the buffer fill, it hardly ever shows larger numbers than 0%. The sound of course is not acceptable. The client computer is connected via a 100MBit Ethernet. The lame encoder is not set up on the server. Playing the WAV files from the server share via a standard player such as Winamp just works fine. (server is a 800Mhz Celeron on W2k, client a 1.3GHz Celeron / W2k) I tried to increase the audio buffer (*10). This does not seem to help Did somebody encounter similar problems ? You have to get a pretty expensive sound card to rival the SB's audio quality. - Consider the power requirements of a full PC versus the SB, that's also a cost issue as electricity isn't cheap. - Finally, you need to run that sound to the nearest stereo system so that you can listen to it, which requires that that PC be reasonably close to the stereo, or you'll be running really long (messy) lengths of cable from that hidden cupboard to where your stereo components are. CavesOfTQLT Wrote: And many, many thanks to Listener. I'll take that as encouragement to make a few more observations. If you are serious about sound quality, you want a S/W + H/W solution that is dead reliable in playing without pops, gaps or glitches. You don't pay money to get a music-on-hard-disk system that does play perfectly. That isn't easy for a user-mode program like Softsqueeze. Every now and then Windows may do a blizzard of disk I/O to save its state. Firefox produces periodic disk I/O storms too and Slimserver may rescan the music folder at intervals producing its own disk I/O storm. The web has a number of little communities of audiophiles who mostly agree on a technical approach. USB based DACs are popular on several of those communities. The isochronous method of transfer theose USB DACs use is not a good starting point for high-quality audio. (No re-transmission, clock is ultimately derived from the USB traffic, etc.) However, Windows provides a builtin driver for that method of audio data transfer. There is a right way to do it, but it requires writing a kernel-mode audio driver for Windows and then building a USB DAC that talks to the new driver. Nobody has done that. Instead, they do more-or-less heroic efforts to work around the limitations of isochronous transfer. The Squeezebox connects to its server via an Internet via an Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection. It does the job right: data can be re-transmitted if necessary and the all-important word clock can be generated in the Squeezebox with very low jitter. And the DAC is outside the electrically noisy PC environment with its own power supply. So the Squeezebox might produce better sound quality for $ 250 than a USB DAC or an high-quality soundcard. You might still use a Squeezebox with a PC in the same room as your stereo. but they got over it :-) But, seriously, please explain this bit: When I re-scan, eventually Slimserver shuts down while the browser continues to tell me that it is still scanning my library. If the Slimserver shut down, there'd be nothing to tell you it it is still scanning. So did it shut down or didn't it? I am having the same problem. I just installed SlimServer Version: 6.2.1 - 5194 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252 and it found my iTunes XML file but it does not list any of my playlists. I am running iTunes version 6.0.0.18. In my case, the MP3s are in C:\MP3\ but the XML file is located in the default C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ Does anyone have this working? Santa is bringing my Squeezebox in a couple days and I'm going to need my playlists. Yes, I am quite pleased with the way it worked out, and I use it all the time. Yeah, you really should get aux input to take advantage of the good sound. My factory unit was a 6-disc in-dash CD changer, double-DIN, but it had no aux input, plus it took twice the space. I never liked using the changer, since I then had CDs captive in my car, and I had to choose what CDs to take on trips, etc - never bothered for short drives. For a few years I had been looking for a way to play my collection without lugging CDs around (or even MP3 discs, for that matter). Now I'm happy! Because of a display glitch, I was sent a replacement SB2 wireless, and I tried that for a while, even using it as a wireless bridge to sync music, which worked fine. But that unit exhibitted the display glitch even more often (others on the forum have seen it too, so I filed a bug on it - who knows, it might be exacerbated by the changes in temperature, etc.), so I kept the original wired unit, and I'm back to using my little Linksys USB wireless adapter to sync, which works just fine. -- LavaJoe LavaJoe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2331 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19342 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Nokia 770 Skin
II am not trying to hijack the thread, but thought you guys mmight help. I own a Roku Soundbridge. My computer is a Mac PPowerbook with Apple Airport Extreme as WIFI router. I have bbeen looking for a GUI remote control since buying the Roku. I ttried the Phillips RC9800i, but UPnP is just like Microsoft's pplug-and-play . . . it is actually plug and pray. The 770 llooks like it could do what I wanted, so I bought one this wweek. It is awesome! Anyway, to my problem. When accessing mmy Roku via the slimserver web interface, music plays for 30 sseconds then hiccups for about 5-10 seconds. I assume this is aa buffering issue. However the internet radio works fine. I know the easy solution is to get a true Slim Device instead of tthis Roku, but I want to make sure it iisn't a Apple issue. Aany suggestions? Is the Roku iincompatible with slimserver websurfing control or is my Mac iincompatible with slim? Sorry so long winded. Re: [slim] Re: SB sends no DHCP host name
0xdeadbeef wrote: Unfortunately, in my case the DHCP server is running on my DSL modem/router and there's nothing to configure there. Though it should give the SQ the same IP every time due to MAC caching, I have the feeling it doesn't. Indeed, I observed at least 3 different IP addresses in the few days since I obtained my SQ. Then again, all devices whith a DHCP name get the same IP all the time. You really need to trace the packets to know what's really going on, as I know of at least two different ways that a given host might keep a stable IP address. First, the client might cache leases in nonvolatile memory across power cycles or reboots and simply request the previous IP address when rebooted. A DHCP server will almost always grant a request for a specific IP address as long as it's in that server's pool and no other client has a lease for it. Second, the server might cache client MAC addresses and previous leases (expired or still valid) and reassign the previous IP address even when the client doesn't ask for it. It's helpful to know the DHCP protocol exchange. A cold start looks like this: Client: DHCPDISCOVER [who can give me an IP address?] Server: DHCPOFFER a.b.c.d [I'm a DHCP server, and I can offer you this address] Client: DHCPREQUEST a.b.c.d [I'd like to use this address] Server: DHCPACK a.b.c.d [Okay, you've been officially granted this address] A booting client that wants to use a previously assigned address will jump directly to the DHCPREQUEST message. The server can respond with a DHCPACK as before, or it can respond with a DHCPNAK (negative acknowledgement), rejecting the request. At this point the client will fall back to the DHCPDISCOVER step. Ideally the Squeezebox would save DHCP leases across reboots, and your DHCP server would hand out very long leases to minimize the chances of that address being given to another client. But there are other ways to ensure that a Squeezebox always gets the same IP address, including bypassing DHCP altogether and assigning a static IP address. That might be your best bet assuming your Squeezebox doesn't move often. Just make sure that you set up separate blocks of addresses for static use and dynamic assignment, so your DHCP server doesn't hand out the address already in use by your Squeezebox. DHCP clients are supposed to detect this by ARPing for an assigned address before actually using it, but it can fail if the conflicting host with the static assignment happens to be offline at the time. --Phil Phil ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Different skins on different devices?
I thought it would be fun to try running the SS web interface on my iPaq, and got it working fairly easily (usually I have no end of trouble with the iPaq's WiFi support). I wasn't too surprised to find that my preferred skin on the laptop (Fishbone) is just a tad (!) cramped on the iPaq, so I changed the skin to Handheld. Unfortunately, this also changed it on my laptop - not what I wanted to happen! Is there a way to have different skins on different devices? Having to change the skin each time I switch device would be quite a pain (especially from Fishbone on the iPaq!) I thought that Touch(screen) might look better on the iPaq, but alas it's way too big. (Hmmm, but I *do* have a tablet PC for work...) (I wasn't planning on using the iPaq regularly; it usually has trouble re-establishing a connection after being turned off, and I don't intend to leave it on all the time. However, when I tried it just now, it reconnected fairly quickly. I suppose if it wasn't such a battered old thing I could use it to impress friends, though I think the SB3 is impressive enough on its own!) -- Brian -- Brian Ritchie Brian Ritchie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=19374 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Figured out the problem. Once I talked it out, it became obvious. Should have just told my wife or the dog who both view the audio stuff as magic rather than bothering you guys.
