[slim] Re: New version of SoftSqueeze

2006-08-25 Thread rds

Ctrl did the trick. Thanks Andy.

I guess I can do without the close button, since the remote can be
dragged off-screen with out getting lost. Since it's anchored to the
device, you can position it below the device and then anchor the
Transporter window to the bottom of the screen. To get the remote back,
you just have to drag the Transporter window up.

[slim] Re: wireless config menu?

2006-08-25 Thread Ross L

After setup networking you hit the right arrow and you SHOULD see:

Press UP/DOWN to change, RIGHT to go on
Connect to an ethernet network

At this point you can hit up/down to toggle to wireless.

If you're not seeing the wireless option there you might want to
contact who you got the SB1 from, and ask if it was problematic. In any
case, you can email support AT slimdevices DOT com and request an RMA if
you're certain its a wireless model and the wireless isn't working.

[slim] Re: Gapless over internet streaming?

2006-08-25 Thread Rich2211

You may want to try setting up your SlimServer box to use SSH.

There's a good tutorial here:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?ConnectingRemotely

If you want to use OPENSSH, there's a good set of instructions here:
http://bmonday.com/articles/653.aspx

Not only does SSH greatly increase security, it also bypasses most
corporate proxy servers. I've been able to bypass the proxy server at
work using SoftSqueeze, and it works great. I'm even able to access the
web UI, since it looks like SoftSqueeze does some port forwarding behind
the scenes. Just connect to http://localhost:9000 once you have
SoftSqueeze connected, and you are all set.

[slim] New version of SoftSqueeze

2006-08-25 Thread rds

I've been using the new version of SoftSqueeze that ships with the
latest 6.5 nightlies. Very, very nice, especially the new Transporter
interface.

Anyway, does anyone know how to move or close the remote? On the old
version, the right mouse button could be used to drag the remote
separately from the device. Also, the remote could be closed. Neither
of these functions seem to be available. I realize that this is an
alpha version and these features may have not been implemented yet, but
I wanted to make sure I wasn't just missing something obvious. The
remote is so big that it often ends up displaying right overtop the
device and, even when it doesn't, it's generally in the way. Thanks.

[slim] Network always busy

2006-08-25 Thread AndrueC

As I posted earlier I've switched my server onto new hardware.
Everything is working but I noticed that the network icon was always
showing activity. My server isn't just a music server it's also my mail
server and general 'houseNet server'. The fact it's a mail server and
exposed to the outside world bothered me so I downloaded Ethereal to
take a look.

It turns out that my SB3 and the server are continuously exchanging
multi-cast packets even while the SB3 is off. I don't think the server
used to do that on the old hardware. Presumably it's the SB3 asking if
anyone is there - but why is it doing it all the time?

Auto-shutoff seems to be hard to do exactly right. My Behringer active
monitors (B2031A) have the unfortunate habit to shut off too soon (at
low listening levels). That's even more annoying. I fixed that with
AmpSwitch and the manual power setting. Ampswitch could fix your problem

It does seem to be about an hour, fairly consistently. The longest has
been just over the hour, the shortest about 50 minutes.

Well worth it given the quality the combination gives me - I'm hearing
things in the music that I've never noticed before (even on the
considerably more expensive hifi) - thanks for the recommendation!

How did you do that nice quoting in blue?

I merely tried the flac->mp3 transcoding in order to test streaming to
a remote location. As for a lan, you are obviously correct in that
transcoding to .wav (for the formats the need transcoding) is the way
to go, for several reasons.

A second ethernet connection is indeed an option. I have no idea how I
missed that. Thanks for pointing it out!

While the MicroClient Jr. certainly looks cute, the cuteness will be
somewhat compromised by the external disk needed for user as a
Slimserver box, in my opinion. Looking at NorhTec's site, there are
some other nice fanless machines there, that are also very modestly
priced, and that have room for an internal disk.

Flac->Wav is a relatively lightweight operation. In fact, most decoding
is fairly lightweight compared to encoding. So, there's always .wav to
fall back on if you haven't got the grunt to encode to mp3.

I'm using a Sony RM-VL600 learning remote (about $25). It works fine,

One thing to keep in mind: I've tried several remotes, and none of them

annoyance that I put up with for the convenience of having one less bit

[slim] Moving folder.jpg cover art to mp3 tags..

2006-08-25 Thread Kevin Hawkins
I spent quite a while ensuring that all my albums had cover art by
having a folder.jpg present in the directory (there are a few other
standard names slimserver supports). I would now prefer to embed these
images directly in my mp3 tags rather than have them as separate files
(as I have other players which do not see these separate files). Is
there an application anyone knows of that will scan a whole drive with
multiple hierarchies and automatically copy these images to the tags,
assuming a tag doesn't already exist ? TIA Kevin

There are no internal shots of the MicroClient Junior, but there is one
of the MicroServer GP/GP+:

http://www.norhtec.com/products/gp/gpinside.jpg

Look on the right - that looks very much like SDRAM in a SODIMM package
and slot like that used by laptops. It's PC133. The SiS 55x SOCs can
support up to 1 GB:

http://www.sis.com/products/sis55xfamily_features.htm

Hopefully the MicroClient Junior has the same slot and it isn't
soldered-in.

Clock speed isn't everything...from a page on one of their other
products, the 'MicroServer GP/GP+'
(http://www.norhtec.com/products/gp/details.html):

So a 166 MHz processor of this type might be competitive with a
processor in an average NAS, maybe more so.

They have other similar products, although more expensive, that would
be suitable for running SlimServer.

based on a 166MHz processor, which means it's even got less performance

[slim] Re: Cheap, low power PC for slimserver

2006-08-25 Thread Mark Lanctot

Now that -is- cool! Cheap, fanless, comes with everything you need -
just looking at the back I was going to say there'd be trouble with a
primary + backup drive with only one USB port, but of course there are
two ports in the front. 128 MB of RAM should be better than a lot of
the NAS devices.

Bet they're going to sell a lot of "evaluation" units. ;-)

The size is pretty amazing - smaller than most external drive
enclosures I've seen!

They don't mention what speed the processor is clocked at. If the
whole thing is $120 it can't be a ULV Pentium or even a VIA C-series.
I don't know if the AMD Geode processors are x86.

I wish they used an SD slot instead of CF. CF is on the decline now,
while SD is becoming very popular and very cheap. 18 months ago I got
a 512 MB SD for $85. Now I can get a 2 GB for $70 ($50 after rebate!)
SD slots are also smaller of course.

If you can see the SlimServer GUI (and I presume you can so you can
add/remove songs from playlists), go to the song either by browsing or
searching.

Once SlimServer displays a single song you'll see a download link.

[slim] Cheap, low power PC for slimserver

2006-08-25 Thread Robin Bowes
I've just stumbled across this [1] device which, at first glance, looks
like it would make an ideal low power PC on which to run slimserver.

Throw in an external USB disk for music library storage and install
puppy linux or similar and you're off!

I might get one to play with ...

[slim] Re: Radio station works on SoftSqueeze but not SqueezeBox2

2006-08-25 Thread rds

Andy, it turns out that it was the URL immediately after the one
discussed above that is causing SlimServer to shutdown. I notice that
sometimes when it can't connect on one playlist entry, it moves to the
next while still displaying the previous entry. That appears to be what
happened here. Anyway, it's the KCRW World News link that is causing
SlimServer to terminate with:

"Can't locate object method "seek" via package "File::Temp" at
/PerlApp/Slim/Player/Squeezebox2.pm line 494.

Should this be logged as a bug, or is this something that is already

Other than obviously straight ftp/scp, is there anyway to 'get' a song

file.

Cheers,

[slim] Re: Remember player by MAC instead of IP?

You making a habbit of awnsering all my posts? :-)

Thanks for the link, I did meant SSH tunneling. PockeTTY seems to work
fairly well (don't know why i didn't found it earlier).

A big plus is now also that I don't have to have an open port onmy
router for SS, all goes through a single SSH port now.

SS is now indeed recognizing my PocketPC as the localhost, and I don't
have any problems anymore of a "new player" everytime I connect.

Thanks a bunch!

IMHO MAC addresses aren't known on the internet. It's an ethernet thing.
Slimserver can't see your card's MAC address as it's not in the same
network.

[slim] Re: Artwork not diplaying correctly

2006-08-25 Thread Wallaby

I finally worked this out. I recently used musicbrainz to tag some files
and in some cases an obscure coverart reference was added. The result
was the messed up cover art. I also had to clear Firefox's cache to
make sure that the proper coverart loaded.

Anyway, it's all working again so it's all good.

Thanks Mr Sinatra for the input.

[slim] Remember player by MAC instead of IP?

2006-08-25 Thread Heimiko

Would it be possible to remember a player by its MAC address instead of
its IP address?

I use a mobile to stream music from my SlimServer, but its IP address
is dynamic (from the provider), so each time i make a new data
connection, my IP address is different. So each time, a new player is
created. this is a huge pain, cause i need to set the bitrate-limiter
to a lower bitrate as my bandwidth is too narrow to stream at 320kbps.

If it's not possible, I'd sure like to see an option where you can set
default options for "new" players, including a default playlist or
something, as new players per default come up with an empty playlist,
and need to set one through the web-browser.

So it's all possible right now to play tracks from my server through
UMTS onto my PocketPC, but euhm it sure isn't easy.

As a third option, i thought about SSL tunneling, as connecting to an
SSL tunnel would be streaming from the localhost (at both SS and the
PocketPC) and this would eliminate the problem, as SS would only see a
localhost connecting, having only a single player to setup, but: i
can't find any SSL tunneling programs for a PPC.

Anyone any thoughts on this, on any of these options?

I have the same setup (SB3 + T-Amp + speakers in my bed room, study and
kitchen) and I definitely hear a hiss when I put my ear against the
speakers. I don't hear anything a meter away, and I don't position my
speakers on my night stand so this is no problem. It was a problem with
the powered computer speakers that I used before that. They were
annoying in the bed room.

When you ripped, did you also create .cue files? It's a common problem
when the info in the cue files is similar but not exactly the same as
in the tags. Might be the same with the .m3u and other playlists.

In 6.5 you can specify that certain extensions should be "dismissed",
with 6.3.1 you need to RAR (or something similar) your cue files. Also
watch out for multiple .m3u files.

Sorry, must have missed your post. I haven't bothered to measure how

All I know is that they always do shut off.
