[slim] Re: Duplicate Albums

2006-10-09 Thread NeilB

After having some duplicate album issues myself, I think I finally found
out what was causing them. Somehow, some of the tracks had V1 and V2
tags. Removing the V1 tags solved the problem. I used a program called
Dr Tag to do it - I did try to do the same with MP3Tag but for some
reason it didn't properly delete them.

Please type the mount command and post the output here. That will tell
us where your filesystems are mounted. Also, change to the directory
where you think your music library is (/dev/hda2), type the command ls
-l and post the output here. That will tell us the permissions on the
top-level folder of your library.

As you're new to Ubuntu, it would be a really good idea to spend some

[slim] Re: Where/how is gain adjustment carried out?

2006-10-09 Thread peterbell

From these responses, I gather that the gain adjustment is performed at
the player, but that it is done in the digital domain. This implies
that it must be a 'lossy' process and should be turned off for best
quality reproduction.

This is a shame, because it does seem to me that, for the analogue
outputs, it ought to be possible to adjust the analogue gain in
response to the replaygain value and maintain a lossless reproduction.

I guess that I'll leave Volume Adjustment turned off on my main system,
but leave it turned on on the other SB which is used for
casual/background listening.

[slim] Slim Server Error(s) [v. 6.5.0]

2006-10-09 Thread shanklee

I have had a SB3 for about 2 months now and love it like it were my own
flesh and blood, however it has started providing me with some spurious
data when I look in the Artist or Album or Genre section. A quick
breakdown of my set-up

All files lossless - FLAC
All files on external HDD
Wireless network - PC to Router to SB3
FLAC files amended by TagRename
All files are open within the folder - unlike iTunes where it provides
separate folders for each artist and album.

When I change tags I always scan and look for new music/files but now
it[slim server] has been dropping filenames and even including data
which has either not been on the file before, i.e. David Bowie - Let's
Dance reads as Buddha Bar - Let's Dance or details that have been on
the file previous to my change in TagRename are still current.

But when I look in the 'Music Folders' link on slim it shows the
correct name and amendment...

This is a long thread and possibly confusing so I shall stop it here,
suffice to say there is more but can anyone help? More info provided
if needed.

(1) try a full clear and rescan

(2) try upgrading to 6.5.1 nightly

(3) Are all your files really in one folder (instead of subfoders by
artist/album, say)? That isn't very friendly to the OS... you could
always try splitting a few off into a smaller folder and see if it
behaves properly then.

If none of these work you'll need to let people know which OS you are
on, and if you are using any plugins...

Re: [slim] 6.5.1 = Nasty Electronic Sound on startup Severe Track delays

2006-10-09 Thread Richie

At the start of every track (mp3) theres a high pitched 0.25second
nasty electronic soundvery similar to those you get with a ripping
error. All tracks were playing ok with 6.5.0 (except these issues
http://forums.slimdevices.com/newreply.php?do=postreplyt=28138) but
after upgrading to 6.5.1 this error makes things unlistenable.

As I say, its already been posted by Neil
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28416) and that was
with 6.5.0.

I also experienced this over the weekend. I installed the 6.5.1
2006-10-07 nightly into a clean directory, with only the latest
MusicInfoSCR plugin and a copy of my pref file. I haven't heard
anything like it before. Since only 1-2% of my music is mp3 and the
rest flac, I only heard it a couple of times. I was about to do some
troubleshooting tonight and came across this thread.

The panel in the upper right side reads:

and the final panel reads:

Although I can browse my music and play the songs. What is the

[slim] Re: stuttering at the start of each track

2006-10-09 Thread curly

I have also experienced this on several different machines and
installations. Currently I have the slimserver.deb of slimserver 6.5
insatlled onto Ubuntu Dapper on a P4 2.4G with 1gig of ram running
Softsqueeze 3.2.1 locally. Since the connection is localhost I
cannot understand how this could be a network issue as seems to be most

happen on every single machine I install to no matter the version of

2006-10-09 Thread BBobley

Thanks everyone for info. Let me make sure I understand:

The MP3 standard allows the album art to be stored:

a) embedded inside the MP3 file
or
b) a pointer is embedded that points to the image file located
elsewhere in the filesystem

Is that right?

And how does Apple's iTunes album art work exactly? Perhaps it
designed to work across multiple file types (e.g. MP3, AAC, etc?)

Are there pros and cons to these different methods? Anyone know of a
technical discussion of these different techniques?

thanks very much!

First, you have to realise that MP3 is one of the least standardized
standards in the 'net. It is much more ad-hoc than any sort of real
standard (such as Internet/IETF RFCs).

The SlimServer also allows the album art to just be in the same disk
folder as the song files.

The obvious advantage of having a pointer to an external image file is
that you don't have to duplicate the art for all of the tunes in the
album. Most CDs have only cover, and typically have 10 or so tunes per CD.

The obvious advantage of having the image emb edded in the song file is
that when you move the file, transfer it to another device, etc. the
album cover moves too.

However, it may be worth, as you suggest, setting up an ABX test so

I guess that, from a purist point of view, having elected to use FLAC

Why would anyone serious about music reproduction use replaygain for
anything other than casual listening, anyway?

So add the calculated values to your files and then decide whether or
not you ever want to use it - it's just a few tags that don't affect
the actual audio data. It's great for music playback for background
music, parties and other non-critical listening situations where the
benefits outweigh the potential minuses.

[slim] Can't rate Pandora songs

2006-10-09 Thread grimholtz

Hi,

I used to be able to rate Pandora songs (thumbs up/down) while the song
was playing by using the right-arrow key, then up/down. That while was
the RSS ticker displayed during the song.

I've changed SB3 so the song name/album scrolls during playback instead
of the RSS ticker. But now when I press the right-arrow key to rate the
currently-playing Pandora song, SB3 says Press PLAY to listen. If I
press right-arrow a second time, it says This station is already...

How can I rate Pandora songs again?

Thanks,

[slim] Interesting problem/observation

2006-10-09 Thread Mike White

Don't know if this is a bug, or something just got whacky.

Running an SB2 with 6.5.0 on Windows XP.

On Saturday the 7th, I turned on the SB to get internet radio through
squeezenetwork. It worked fine for awhile, then I happened to look at
the SB display, and noticed that it was displaying that it couldn't
connect to squeezenetwork - however the station I was listening to was
coming through fine. Okay, it is probably just what was buffered I say
to myself. I watch it for awhile, and it keeps doing this. Connects to
squeezenetwork (SN), then says it can't connect, connects again, then
says it can't connect. Over and over. The music keeps coming through
just fine.

I finally say the hell with it, I want to be quiet, and listen to
music, not go trouble-shooting. I switch to slimserver. Everything is
fine. Music plays just fine.

Sunday the 8th, I saw the e-mail about SN being down so I just continue
to listen to slimserver.

Monday the 9th. Decide to listen to internet radio through SN. It
connects just fine, no problems, for a moment, then a god-awful hum
comes through the speakers. Not a 60 cycle (hertz to you newcomers)
hum, just a horrible hum.

Oh s***, what has gone wrong now? Turn off the SB, leaving just the
amplifier on. Still a hum (actually it is more of a horrible static hum
than anything else).

Tried connecting to slimserver - still a horrible hum.

BTW - the wireless router is new, about a week old. No problems with my
laptop.

SB is connected to aux in, so I try playing just a CD. No problems.
Turn the SB back on and switch to aux. Horrible hum.

Okay, let's see if it is the amplifier or the SB. Unplug the SB. Turn
the amp back on, switched to aux. No hum - no noise either, but that
was expected.

Turn the SB back on - go through the setup again, and voila. No hum,
connects to SN or slimserver with no problems, no hum.

I have no idea what, if anything other than gremlins, caused this, or
what corrected it.

It sounds like an old radar set we used to have when I was in the Navy.
We had a small X marked on the side of the case. Every so often the
radar would just go nuts. We did find that if you hit the side of the
case where the 'X' was, it would instantly clear up. I don't know what
the problem ever was, because nine months later it was still doing it
when I left. We had checked every single wire and replaced every single
tube with no joy. We even resoldered every joint, and did everything
else we could think of. We even had the yard technicians go through it
with a fine tooth comb. No joy. For all I know that damn radar is still
doing it, except I am sure it was retired from service many years ago.

In any event, if anybody has any ideas (other than painting an 'X' on
the side of the SB) I would love to hear them.

Well I certainly hesitated to upgrade. And in fact found 6.5.1 to
be more stable than the 6.5 final release but it's been worth it to
me. Lots of little UI improvements, faster performance, and many old
nagging bugs fixed. Overall a positive experience. Caveat: be prepared
to update all your old favorite plugins and to rebuild your preferences
and library. The smoothest option for me ended up being a fresh
uninstall/install, with my .pref saved out and recopied into my
slimserver directory afterwards. Good luck.

Not sure about your problem, but about this:

On Saturday the 7th, I turned on the SB to get internet radio through
squeezenetwork. It worked fine for awhile, then I happened to look at
the SB display, and noticed that it was displaying that it couldn't
connect to squeezenetwork - however the station I was listening to was
coming through fine. Okay, it is probably just what was buffered I say
to myself. I watch it for awhile, and it keeps doing this. Connects to
squeezenetwork (SN), then says it can't connect, connects again, then
says it can't connect. Over and over. The music keeps coming through
 just fine.

The SB now connects directly to the stream and can continue playing it
even if it can't talk to SqueezeNetwork or SlimServer.

[slim] Re: stream keeps stuttering

2006-10-09 Thread MrSinatra

wow.

the problem is horrible now.

it starts stuttering within minutes... and all 3 streams are using the
latest version of shoutcast, ver 1.9.7

i primarily bought the squeezebox2 (not sb3 btw) to do just this, to
listen to this internet station. the problems its having with
shoutcast, which is incredibly popular and standard, are most
disappointing.

i haven't tried the other two streams, but the highest one they have,
128kbps, is the one i am testing expecting to work, as 128 isn't that
high.

whats interesting is that when connected to SN it has happened, but not
as fast nor as hard to fix/restart once started. this then relates to
my responses to your comments below:

bpa;144211 Wrote:
In 6.5, if a stream can be handled directly by the SB3 (i.e. mp3, WMA
and Ogg-vobis), SS will try to set it up - I think this is the way
 Squeezenetwork works as well.

i would guess you're right, and i would love it to be this way, IF it
worked properly, b/c i love the way the stream stays on even if you
reboot the computer. but that isn't worth it if it can't handle normal
shoutcast streams.

also, do you happen to know if now the power button on the remote is
real now or has the way it works not changed? it seems closer now to
a power cycle, altho i find i still have to often turn off my receiver
(and its switched outlet) to get the sb2 to power cycle.

bpa;144211 Wrote:
Around the same time there have been lots of problem with shoutcasts so
there may have been updates there as well.

well, like i said, it was fine by 6.2 - 6.3

so if this change is that now SS sees its way out of the process and
sb2 now does it alone, and thats what has introduced the problem, well,
then they need to fix the firmware asap.

is that what you are saying?

bpa;144211 Wrote:
Given the SB3 works well with other MP3 sources, it would indicate the
problem is with Shoutcast and/or network between your SB Shoutcast.

i don't see how you draw this conclusion.

it seems to me that the problem is with this new way that SS/SB
handles .pls streams from shoutcast, esp since it USED to work just
dandy w/shoutcast.

i have no problem listening to the stream with winamp for example.

bpa;144211 Wrote:
The problem may not have shown up in the past as the Shoutcast stream
terminated in the PC and MP3 data was rebroadcast by SS to SB.

right, which once again, would indicate its a slim problem with its
new way as opposed to a SC/net problem.

bpa;144211 Wrote:
At the moment you cannot force MP3 to be handled by SS - I am chasing a
bug in this area and I found this anomaly. So the only real way to
find out what's going on (don't forget it could be a router issue !) is
to fire up Ethereal or similar.

i def think the option should be there to force slim to do it the old
way, which i assume was having SS feed the SB, for at least as long as
these problems continue.

thx for your comments!

The obvious advantage of having the image emb edded in the song file is

that when you move the file, transfer it to another device, etc. the
 album cover moves too.

Thank you Pat. That is quite helpful. Do most of the major MP3
players out there support both these two methods? (e.g. using a pointer
to external image and embedding image?).

I'm assuming the third method (having the image in the same folder) is
Slim-only.

By the way: what tag holds the pointer to the external file? What is
the format for that tag?

[slim] Re: stream keeps stuttering

2006-10-09 Thread andyg

Don't get sidetracked by Shoutcast, or pls, etc. If it plays at all
those are not a problem. You can tune in directly to the stream if
you're worried about that.

The real issue here is the bandwidth necessary to stream the radio
station. Have you tried listening via a computer with Winamp, iTunes,
or Windows Media Player? If the problem is your connection, those will
also stutter.

You also may want to try the latest 6.5.1 nightly.

You must not be in the right menu. Press the Now Playing key, then
press right. Pandora was changed a bit so it doesn't force you to the
Now Playing screen anymore, to be more in line with how the rest of the

3 processes in all that i am aware of. over time, mem usage grows as

the mysql takes 16megs, the slim.exe takes an incredible 60 or so at
start up, and then works its way up to over 75!!! this is the single
biggest process on my system, with only the svchost close. the next
closest app is outlook at 25 or so.

and then this i really don't get, the tray icon is 7.5meg! why??? to
power its dumb lil lights? i like the way plextor runs its tray icon,
subdued when plextools is exited, but still there ready to start up.
still piggy at 2megs, but not as bad.

[slim] How to add SqueezeNetwork favorite to top-level menu?

2006-10-09 Thread grimholtz

Hi,

90% of my time with SB3 is with the built-in squeezenetwork streams
(Pandora stations, Live365, etc). Is there anyway to move my SN
favorites to the top-level menu? I'd prefer not to have to navigate
through multiple levels of menus (SN-Favorites-stream) every time I
use the SB3.

Favorites-stream would be better, but a 1-key shortcut would be
superb! Are either possible?

thank you,
grimholtz

[slim] Re: stream keeps stuttering

2006-10-09 Thread MrSinatra

andy, i really appreciate the reply, but as i said the problem is NOT
evident on winamp or anywhere else. it only started with me installing
6.5 and as best as i can tell, its not a coincidence.

i run the shoutcast servers for the station, and we've not had any
issues i am aware of.

i know the .pls streams are mp3 encoded, as i set them up btw.

this seems to me to be a SB issue in the firmware.

as a test, i fired up the stream in winamp. i then powered up the SB2
and told it to play the stream while connected to SS.

while winamp STILL plays fine, the SB2 eventually stutters. and its a
strange stutter, its as if its catching up, skipping ahead, but it
never catches up fully.

and, if i stop the SB, and then restart the stream, (using power or
just the play button alone) the problem is gone until the next time it
starts a few minutes (or whatever) later.

(it does the same thing with SN, but it takes longer, esp later at
night)

i don't install beta software, but i will install it when its released,
(which i hear is soon) and i will report then.

if ultimately it is a net congestion issue, then why doesn't winamp do
it?

is it because of this new way of sending the stream right to the
device?

is it b/c the device might not have a big enough mem buffer for
conditions other than perfect net?

if so, for problems such as this, we need a way to force the stream to
SN or SS first, which in turn will properly feed the SB without the
stutter, (like winamp).

thanks, -mdw

[slim] Re: Duplicate Albums

2006-10-09 Thread bossman

Thanks for the suggestion. I too use Dr Tag and validated that most (if
not all) of my albums only have one type of tag (some are V1 and some
are V2 if that matters).

Regardless, nothing has changed about the tags of my albums since
before I upgraded to 6.5.0.

I tried deleting everything in my SlimServer Server cache folder
within my slimserver installation, then setting my folders to a folder
with no songs, and clearing the library. That resulted in an empty
library.

But when I pointed my playlists folder back to where I actually keep my
music (on an external hard drive) it rescanned and each song showed up
three times again. I'm dumbfounded.
