Re: [slim] iTunes to sell DRM-free 256 kbps AAC

2007-04-03 Thread Patrick Dowling
Apple didn't create AAC and doesn't own it, they simply use it in
iTunes and on the iPods. Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Advanced_Audio_Coding#Licensing_and_patents for some of the details.

That's one of the prices you pay for adopting a proprietary format.

Now if you wanted to pay an extra chunk of money to Slimdevices so

could pay a licensing fee to Apple, you might get somewhere. On the
other hand, why should Slimdevices put themselves at a competitive
disadvantage price-wise in order to support a proprietary format when
there are great, free, lossless formats such as flac available?
Indeed, why would anyone have chosen a proprietary format over a free
one in the first place- oh yeah, those Ipods are s cute!

Will Slimdevices make enough money selling more SBs to apple fans who
made the mistake of investing large sums into proprietary format
libraries to offset the loss of customers due to increased price of
 the
SB? Will apple license AAC decoders or will they keep their flock
penned securely in the Apple hardware corral?

[slim] I hear squeezebox through my tv when amp is off

2007-04-03 Thread dazbarber

The phono (audio) output of my tv is connected to the 'Video1' input of
my JVC amp. There is no connection in the other direction.

My squeezebox is connected to the 'aux' input of the same amp.

If the amp is switched off and the squeezebox is still playing music,
the squeezebox output can be heard through the (Sony) tv along with the
normal tv audio.

Why is this and is something wrong?

Thanks,

Daz

Re: [slim] I hear squeezebox through my tv when amp is off

2007-04-03 Thread CardinalFang

My guess would be that the JVC amp doesn't isolate the signals
electrically when they are not selected. My Copland amp for example has
relays that completely isolate input and output signals when the amp is
switched off or when different inputs are selected.

So it seems there is leakage of the SB output into the TV input within
the amp since they will all connect to the pre amp stage in the JVC amp
at some point. The output from the TV is also probably taken from a
pre-amp stage in the TV audio circuits (guessing again!) so SB signal
coming in from the amp via the TV audio out also gets amplified along
with the TV audio in the power amp stages.

That's my theory in any case. I used to get similar effects on my old
amp and the only solution was to turn off all the audio input devices
when they are not being used - or upgrade to an amp that isolates
inputs fully.

Re: [slim] Getting better performance out of MySQL

2007-04-03 Thread ceejay

I can't honestly say this is a major issue for me, its just a little
irritating, and I'm left with the feeling that it could be better if
only I could find the magic button to push.

I'm running on Windows XP Pro SP2, SS 6.5.1, 2.8GHz P4, 1GB RAM,
internal disc. 727 albums with 8219 songs by 1510 artists.

I've tried some of the MySQL parameter tweaks mentioned earlier - they
seem to have increased the amount of memory allocated, as expected, but
no obvious impact on performance.

My Virus checker is Norton 2006: I switched it from scanning all files
to Smart scanning (ie not including the .MY* types) and that made no
visible difference.

The benchmark I'm using is how long it takes to respond to the Browse
Albums click through the Web UI: typically 12 seconds, can be as much
as 15. During this time CPU goes to 100%.

I'd certainly appreciate some authoritative comments on how the
database might be tunable for better performance, if that really is the
bottleneck.

TIA

So which of the above tends to be the real cause of the problem? I guess
that (3) could be tackled by forcing a re-sync whenever an under-run is
detected.

Does (2) happen? If so, what are the clock tolerances on the different
devices?

Re: [slim] Looking at improving multi-player synchronization

2007-04-03 Thread awy

Hmm, 10-20ms, perhaps it is doable.

I realise that both getting the initial sync precise and then
maintaining it would best be done with firmware support. I suspect that
firmware change may be needed in the end but here is an outline of how
it could possibly be done without it.

On my LAN at home I typically get 2ms round trip time (RTT) for wired
connections and 4ms for wireless. There are a couple of switches
(100baseT) between the server and the wired SlimP3, plus a WLAN .11g
base-station and ethernet-bridge on the path to the
wirelessly-connected one. I have measured this with both UDP echo and
(by modifying the server software) using normal stream data packets.
There is a quite a large variation, with many packets above the median,
but at the median (or perhaps a lower percentile) the figures are pretty
stable. I realise that there are several reasons for the variation in
RTT (and I understand at-least some of them). Nonetheless, it is
probably possible to get a good measure of the -true- RTT by taking the
median value from the last 20-or-so packets.

Given the (lack of) accuracy of these measurements, it is also
reasonable to assume that the one-way delay is half the RTT.

As each ACK packet is received on the server, we know the following:

- the time ACK was received by the server and, so long as the RTT is
considered valid ( median), we can deduce the time-stamp (T) of the
  following data;
- the number of bytes in the player's buffer (F);
- we can get the number of bytes into the song stream (Sb =
  $client-streamBytes());
- from which we can deduce the play point at T; Pb = Sb – F;

We can collect this data for each player.

The next problem is how to compare the (T, Pb) tuples for multiple
players. If the stream rate is known and constant then this is
relatively straightforward. If it is not known or is variable then one
could either measure it over time (using either rate-of-consumption
data from the player or by inspecting the stream using knowledge of the
stream protocol) and assume that the average rate (perhaps the -recent-
average rate) is a sufficiently-accurate measure for our purposes, or
we could keep a copy of all the data in the player's buffer and
calculate the run-time of the current buffer (again, by knowledge of
the stream protocol). There are probably a variety of tricks that could
be employed to improve the efficiency of these measures and associated
calculations.

*Question:* is the average bit-rate of variable-bit-rate streams likely
to be good enough in practice?

With the data above we can calculate the relative play-point delay for
each player, at least to the point where it is handed off to the
decoder.

The next problem is how to get the players which are behind to -catch
up-. I work on the assumption that it is better to do this than to
cause players which are ahead to pause. I do not know much about the
construction of the stream formats (MP3, FLAC, etc.) but I presume that
one cannot simply steal a few bytes out of the stream and have it still
work. I guess that there must be some kind of framing. Is it possible
to detect the frame boundaries just by looking at the byte stream
starting at an arbitrary point (I would have expected the protocols to
have been defined this way to enable a receiver to resynchronize)?
Having found the frame boundaries, can one simple cut out a frame and
the stream will still play? What time period do frames represent
(typical, range)?

Assuming that there are good answers to all the above, then one could
steal one or more frames from the next packet(s) sent to the player, so
that the relative delay is removed. One problem is that this takes
buffer-size-play-time seconds to take effect.

So perhaps the pause idea has some merit. By sending a pause command
followed by a resume (play) command at a known interval, one could
probably make adjustments to around the 1ms level. It has the advantage
of being effective more quickly, before running through the data in the
player's buffer. The trouble would be if the resume command happened to
get caught in a network packet delay then all the other players would
have to be paused by the same period to get things back in sync. This
could quickly get quite silly. In the case of network streams, such as
Internet radio, one might find oneself either exceeding the
buffering/delay that can be tolerated by the stream, causing a stream
reset, or just get more and more behind real time.

Any comments on the above or other suggestions would be appreciated.

Alan.

Re: [slim] Looking at improving multi-player synchronization

2007-04-03 Thread awy

A couple of simple firmware enhancements could possibly be helpful.

- Have each ACK include the player's 1kHz clock tick value
- Have a -start-playing (unpause) at clock-tick value- command
- Have a -pause for N clock-ticks- command

Using the mechanism described in the previous message to determine the
typical round-trip-time, this would probably be sufficiently accurate
to get good synchronized player starts and could also compensate for
known differences in decoder delays. The third option would allow for
accurate implementation of the pause method for resynchronization
described above.

Many of the CDs I buy are classical box sets that can work out at well

Amazon.co.uk's marketplace.

I do see this as a step in the right direction, but it is hardly a
leap, and will not make me buy anything from iTunes. I still prefer
the CD approach where I have a good back-up, lossless with no DRM and
sleeve notes to read on the tube home. And it's cheaper.

To take Tyler Durden's point further, in ten years someone will start
marketing CDs, encouraging people to abandon the traditional download

A while back I saw a copy of the software that Apple gives out to music
contributers and it actually has the option for them to submit them
losslessly. I'm not sure if this was always an option and I can't
remember if it defaults to lossless for new submissions, but hopefully

I'm not sure about the market in Europe, but there are cheap universal

the trick. They're available at low-end electronics stores.

Obviously you don't want a fancy one that would end up being more than

But they seem to be widely available here and are quite cheap - I think
I've seen them as low as $5 (on sale).

Seeing as you have another remote that has the brightness button, you
should be all set for the occasional firmware update.

awy wrote:
 Hello,

I'm giving some serious thought about how to improve the multi-player
synchronization problem. In particular, the issue that players can get
out of synchronization with each other.

Good, there's room for improvement.

To make sure that I am starting in the right place, let me briefly
assert my understanding of how the current synchronization mechanism
works. Players are synchronized at the start of a track by filling each
player's buffer above a low-water mark while in 'buffering' mode (not
playing), and then putting all synchronized players into play mode as
near simultaneously as possible. Synchronization only occurs at the
start of a track, including when the track is a remote stream such as
 an Internet radio station.

So the first question is why do players get out of sync? Some
 possibilities:
1.They start out of sync because the command to start playing is not
received sufficiently simultaneously by all players.

I know I see this fairly regularly. I use my living room and kitchen
players synced. When the 'living' player is playing and I switch on the
kitchen one, they don't always start synchronized properly, even though
the song restarts (annoying enough by itself). Both players are SB3's
and they're both connected to the same wireless access point. Since
Slimserver uses TCP I'm assuming they don't use broadcast to turn on the
players at exactly the same time, but two commands must go out over TCP.
This is never exactly at the same time and apparently sometimes the
difference is too great for a decent sync. My idea would be to use a UDP
broadcast command to trigger playback. If my understanding is correct,
all players should receive that at exactly the same time - or not at all
if there's a network error ;).

Peter

Re VAT costs,

JFI you do pay VAT on both the item and the shipping, and you'll also
get the added fun of paying UPS for collecting the VAT payments. So
expect the cost of VTA and collection to be 7 quid or so.

[slim] Just got broadband, Squeeze box's not working anymore?

2007-04-03 Thread Orb

Hello,
I've just got broadband after waiting for 3 years for it.
However, it's wireless broadband as I'm in a rural area.

I have two SB2's which were working fine. The broadband guy installed
today now slim server cannot see the SB's.

Before I contact the broadband people I thought I better check here
first.

One thing it might have something to do with is I was told that a port
or something has been closed which stops file sharing p2p software from
working, which they do to control bandwidth on their network. Could this
be something to do with my problem?
I could understand if the SB was trying to access the net but all they
do is play music from my hard drive. I have a switch which everything
is connected too.

Any ideas?

Re: [slim] Just got broadband, Squeeze box's not working anymore?

2007-04-03 Thread BigTony

How is your new wireless BB setup? A wireless router?
You might have to go into the network setings on your SB's and get them
to look for a new connection and reconfigure the network settings.

As your SB's and SS are all inside your home network, no external port
blocking will have any effect. (i.e. your IP adress is 192.168.2.x
typically)

Just a few ideas to start off with.

Re: [slim] Transporter broken?

2007-04-03 Thread chinablues

My power supply failed about 6 weeks ago. Problem is I live in China
there appears to be some restriction in shipping electronic goods back
from China to the USA. Beats me why this should be the case given that
most stuff you buy in the US is from China! Anyway, compromise is that
SD will ship a power supply board (which is relatively small an easy
plug in replacement) to a colleage in the US he will carry to China.
Unfortunately, according to SD they are/were out of PS units at the
present time. Seems to indicate that this is a weak part in the
system? Also, I wonder, browsing this thread whether the 220/240Volt
folk have statistically more of a failure rate than the 110V US folks?
There seems to be quite a few UK guys reporting failures here.

What did the broadband guy install? Might there be a new router or
something on your network which is handing out new IP addresses?

If so, you might want to disable the DHCP server on the new router, or
move all your other machines (Squeezeboxes included) over to the new IP
address scheme...

What happens if you press and hold [Left] on your SB remote, to set up
networking again? My SBs will scan the network for available
servers...

2007-04-03 Thread Orb

Hi

Well the broadband is wireless - I have a dish on my house but my
network is all cat5, no wireless yet. So the SB's have cat5 going to a
switch. There is no software for my broadband, the guy set it all up on
his laptop so I guess the setting are stored in the dish bit. I just
turned my pc on and I had a broadband connection.

Yeah, SB's started looking for a new IP which it seemed to find, they
it goes to connecting to slim server and just goes blank. If I power on
again, it says waking up slim server and then goes blank. Slim server
cannot see any of the SB's either.

It could be that both SlimServer and your Squeezeboxes have new IP
addresses, but the Squeezebox is still looking for the server at its
old address...

I'd set up networking again on the SB, by holding the [Left] button on
the remote.

Re: [slim] Playing music with no computer turned on

2007-04-03 Thread chinablues

What's the big deal about computers? Mine is on 24/7 is only powered
down when I go on vacation. (this for remote possibility of fire risk).
It's in a separate room from the stereo, so sound is not an issue. Music
goes wirelessly through the walls. Long time ago PC mag ran a report on
computer reliability comparing power off at nighters, versus 24/7 ers.
There was no real difference in reliability. Typically electronics
suffers most on power up, thus leaving it running often results in
longer life compared with switching on/off all the time.

PS. I work in the process control industry. We have systems that have
been powered up for decades...power on is good!

It -would- be nice to see AAC decoded in the box. If this is not already
a priority, the EMI/iTunes DRM decision ought to tip the scales.

The Wikipedia link addresses streaming and distribution, but not

Re: [slim] Bitrate Display

2007-04-03 Thread Hamlet

This is old, but since I'm a new SB user I'd like to throw this out
there again.

It seems that if you have multiple bitrate versions of music it is
almost necessary to display it, but it is unnecessary and a waste of
space to display all of the digits. Perhaps a shortened Bitrate field
is possible?

Alternatively, if I am missing some better way to distinguish between
different bitrate versions of songs when searching, browsing or
playing, it would be great to have that pointed out.

Re: [slim] iTunes to sell DRM-free 256 kbps AAC

2007-04-03 Thread shvejk

Now if you wanted to pay an extra chunk of money to Slimdevices so
they could pay a licensing fee to Apple, you might get somewhere.

The licensing fees seem reasonable to me. I am happy to pay a couple of
extra $ to cover the cost.

http://www.vialicensing.com/Licensing/MPEG4_fees.cfm?product=MPEG-4AAC

On the other hand, why should Slimdevices put themselves at a
competitive
disadvantage price-wise in order to support a proprietary format
when
there are great, free, lossless formats such as flac available?

I am not asking for the free formats to be removed. It is great that
they are supported. This is about making the great player even better
and attracting new customers.

Similar arguments had been made before wma support was added to the
player firmware. Today we can clearly see that it was a great decision.
Pandora, Rhapsody, SN support of many internet radio stations, all made
possible because of that.

Indeed, why would anyone have chosen a proprietary format over a
free
one in the first place- oh yeah, those Ipods are s cute!

iTunes customer base is huge, if you like it or not. It makes sense to
enhance SB compatibility with iTunes music.

Cheers,

I recently bought 2 of the new backlit remotes from the SlimDevices site
which incl. postage came to 43.74 GBP.
But there was an extra payment to UPS of 21.29 GBP.
Presumably for VAT customs, so altogether 2 remotes cost me 60 GBP

And on top of that after I eventually got my hands on the package I
found it only contained one remote.

I understand what you are saying and the whole point of me asking the
question in the begining is becasue I didn't want to have a computer on
24/7. I wanted to know what options were open to me using one of the
slim devices without having a computer on whenever I needed to play the

avoided this option because it is more than twice the price of the

Re: [slim] Slimserver 6.5.1 not displaying artist on current song

2007-04-03 Thread beels

Thank you for the information on the nightly build. I updated to last
night's 6.5.2, but unfortunatly, I still have the problem.

When I use the web interface, or the Transporter or Softsqueeze
visualizer screen, to scroll forward, the artist name is displayed.
Shortly after I select Play, however, the artist name disappears.

[slim] Browse Library - Genre questions

2007-04-03 Thread Club1820

Hello.

I dont even have my squeezebox yet but have set up the server software
and scanned my tunes. I am not sure if this is supposed to work or
not - but when I browse by Genre, then select an Artist within that
Genre - it lists all of my tracks! All 4000 of them under a given
Genre/Artist!

This cant be right? So are you not able to see the individual tracks
under a Genre and then an Artist listed under that Genre?

Thanks for you responses!

Re: [slim] Windows Home Server running Slimserver?

2007-04-03 Thread Kiwi

I am running SlimServer (6.5.2) on a modest machine (HP D530 CMT, 2.67
GHz P4, 512MB RAM, 1+ TB of data on 6 hard drives) and it seems to be
running fine. I am not a heavy user of my Squeezebox/SlimServer so I
may not be the best to judge. I do plan on running some other
applications on my WHS so I will probably increase the RAM to 1GB.

Hi there,

It has been a long time since I sent my original question, but I have
been away from home, so no access to my slimserver.

Amyway back now, and I have connected via Ethernet and still have the
same problem. In fact I have also downgraded to SlimServer Version:
6.3.1 and the problems still remains :-( I see there have been several
posts on the forum regarding this cutting out/rebooting of SB3 and the
mention of the MAC address being changed, but the MAC address of my SB3
is the correct one. Please help, I dont have a clue what to do!
Thanks!

Arguably your computer will last longer when it is always on - one
thing processors are not keen on is thermal shock - suddenly hitting
high temperature in just a few seconds. As long as you don't have a
serious dual-SLI graphics card setup, it won't be that high in power
usage. Give up flying and spend the carbon on convenience!

Yeah it should do what you expect - only show the artists in that

- check your tags using MP3Tag
- under 'server settings - behaviour' there is an option for what to
show based on genre browsing, but it seems to make no difference to me.
Anyway, it should never do what you are seeing. So it's a tag thing.

SlimServer doesn't see your drive mappings. Use the \\yourserver\yourshare

Re: [slim] Browse Library - Genre questions

2007-04-03 Thread Ross L

Sorry about that, I forgot that bug is viewable only by admin and
developers. I'll summarize:

Bug 4824: behavior setting: filter genres at album track level
broken.

It seems the filtering behavioral options is broken.

It seems to me that selecting the option Show any tracks albums for
an
artist (within a genre selection) should show exactly that, any tracks
and
albums by said artists.

Reproduction steps summarized:

Server settings - behavior - filter genres at the album track level
- Show
any tracks albums for an artist.

Browse - Genres - (choose a genre) - click all albums - click all
artists.
SlimServer doesn't show all tracks and albums in said genre, it shows
all
albums and artists in the library regardless of genre.

As has been pointed out several times already in this thread, (1) a NAS
*is* a computer, just a highly specialized one, and (2) slimserver runs
just fine on several NAS devices, without having another computer on. I
have been happily running slimserver on a LinkStation NAS for over a
year now, feeding 3 Squeezeboxes around the house. No computer (other
than the NAS) required.

So what exactly do you mean by ...everything the Squeezebox does and
more, other than the fancy Sonos remote?

Or consider running SlimServer as an application (rather than service)
as your user. To do this you'll need 6.5.2 available in our nightly
build section. Right click on SlimTray and you'll see the option
Automatically run at login.

With SlimServer running in userland, and your user already
authenticated for accessing this drive, SlimServer will also be able to
access the drive.

Under player settings Basic Settings Screensavers you can set the
screensaver to use when playing to the Date and Time Screensaver.
But you can't flip back and forth between the normal track information
and the date/time, if that's what you're looking for. Not unless
there's a plugin that does that.

tagged as Country Genre, I can't until this bug is fixed with 7.0.
???

When will 7.0 come out?

If this is correct - wow. This is how I listen to my music. I will
select a genre first, and then select tracks under that genre. Or just
shuffle the genre.

Anyway - I hope this gets fixed soon. Probably wouldnt have purchase
the squeezebox if I had know about this before-hand.

My squeezebox is due for delivery Friday. Can the bug be fixed by
then? lol :)

Thanks for your responses.

Re: [slim] Otto's Baroque--Can't Connect

2007-04-03 Thread axiomatic

Andy Ross, thanks very much for the great support. Otto's music is
back in the house.

I'm not sure what you mean about the proper playlist though. My SB3
now just displays Baroque Music while tuned to Otto, whereas before
it used to display composer-artist-title tags for the music.

That's one of the things that has put Otto's Baroque a cut above most
streams--though the main thing is great uninterrupted music.

BTW, is there some reason why Slim Devices Picks does not include
Otto's Opera or Otto's Classical? (Is it just that they're new and may
be added later?)

[slim] Funky Random PlayList's driving me nuts

2007-04-03 Thread mswlogo

I posted a while back about biases in random playback and I was point to
a bug that was recently fixed. I tried the fix and it's still funky. It
may simply be user error or another not so intuitive feature.

I think I know what's going on.

I boot everthing up clean. I hit random song and it adds a batch of
songs. It will loop through these songs. If I hit random song again it
ADDs another group and loops through both lists. If I hit random song
again it adds another chunk loops through all 3 chunks.

How do I clear the list with the remote. If I go manually choose an
album I think it clears the list and puts the album. And if I go back
to random song I think I it will clear the album and put in a chunk of
random songs again.

I use random all the time and it never clears out old songs unless I
manually clear them using web interface.

Should it clear the list each time I hit shuffle random song?
Can I clear the list with the remote?

How is it supposed to work?

[slim] Tentitive Fix for unexpect server shutdown on Pause, Stop or Off

2007-04-03 Thread mswlogo

I modified the PreventStandBy plugin to work around a shutdown problem
that annoyed me. When you paused, stopped, or turned off for as little
as a minute the server would disappear.

This may only apply to people that let their server go to sleep and use
Wake-On-Lan.

The problem was very obvious in this PreventStandBy plugin. The Work
around guarantees it will wait a minimum of 15 minutes before shutting
down on pause, stop or off.

Only tested on Windows XP.

Replace Plugin.pm in C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\Plugins\PreventStandby

With attached file.

If anyone has had this problem please give it a test and if I get good
feedback I work on getting it into the official release.

Re: [slim] Otto's Baroque--Can't Connect

2007-04-03 Thread andyg

I couldn't find an mp3 stream for Otto's, they don't even seem to have a
website anymore. By 'a proper playlist', I meant an m3u file or
something that won't change, but where they can change the real stream
address within it without breaking things.

If you know of an mp3 stream, let me know and I'll fix it.

Re: [slim] Browse Library - Genre questions

2007-04-03 Thread erland

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't bug 4824 only refer the the case
when you doesn't select a specific artist.

In my setup I have:
Server Settings-Behaviour-Filter genres at the album track level =
Only show tracks or albums matching the selected genre for an artist

With this configuration I can browse to:
- Genres/Country/All Albums (Which shows all albums in the Country
genre)
- Genres/Country/Johnny Cash (Which shows all albums in the Country
genre by Johnny Cash)
- Genres/Country/Johnny Cash/I Walk The Line (Which shows all songs in
the Country genre by Johnny Cash from the album I Walk The Line)

If I hit play on Genres/Country/All Albums it will play all Country
albums.

If I hit play on Genres/Country/Johnny Cash it will play all albums
by Johnny Cash within the Country genre.

If I hit play on Genres/Country/Johnny Cash/I Walk The Line it will
play all tracks by Johnny Cash within the Country genre from the album
I Walk The Line.

Isn't this the behaviour you are seeing ?
Are you expecting a different behaviour compared to this ?
