[slim] Adding artwork to old flac files

2007-06-19 Thread miguelk

Can anyone suggest the best way to add artwork to old flac files? I got
about a third way through ripping my album collection when the new flac
version added the new artwork metadata feature. The albums i've ripped
since then work great on the new slimserver version...and I was able to
obtain artwork for a substantial number of earlier albums by using
Album Art Aggregator, before it stopped working with the newest windows
update (a problem reported elsewhere in this forum). I am told that the
program "Tag and Rename", which i have purchased, can add this metadata
to old flac files where this data is missing, and can do it in bulk
(i.e., rather than album-by-album, which is too cumbersome for my
thousands of albums still missing artwork). But if it does that, I
can't figure out how to do it.

Can someone give me some guidance, or perhaps suggest another method?
thanks.

It sounds like the machine is having too much asked of it. I am running
SlimServer on a PII (yes, Pentium 2) with 128MB RAM and Windows 2000
with no problems at all (admittedly it is a high-end IBM server). Try
removing or disabling any unnecessary stuff and it should run SS fine
although Windows XP might be a higher overhead!

There isn't a Rockbox theme (UI) in existence that doesn't look like it
was created by a 5 year old with a serious mental deficiency. That's
pretty much reason enough to not install it on any player.

Mind you I think the iPod "looks" fine but has one of the most
backwards UI's ever put upon man - it's idiotic (and yes, I know
exactly how it can be fixed if Apple cared). But as much as I could
never buy any current or past gen iPod because of it, I could never run
that Rockbox crapola on any DAP either.

Sure it could and it's afalacy to think otherwise. IR is very low
budget on resources. You can do pretty much anything you want with only
a tiny amount of memory in fact and very little processing power.

Anything that is decided not to be handled by the client itsle could
then be passed on to the server. Having volume NOT supported at all
directly by the player is a valid design decision, but not a very good
one. It is in fact the easy way out.

As it stands, aside from net latency, volume performance is abysmal,
but that has more to do with the assigned curve than the fact it's
controlled by the server. Not to mention going down from volume level 2
immediately goes to 0 instead of 1. Need to file that one as a bug if
it's not already there.

[slim] Nokia 800 Tablet Internet Radio

2007-06-19 Thread NY2006

I heard there's a new portable wi-fi Tablet Internet Radio called

other media devices. I believe the Nokia also supports video so would
like to know how the live TV streams are compared to PC. Also there's a
software called Select Radio that works with most Mobile phones...was
wondering if Nokia 800 supports this software.

If your SB and Transporter are connected to the same instance of
Slimserver, then their behaviour should be the same.

However I note that you say you are using the Custom Browse plugin - in
this case any bug report should be directed at the plugin writer
(erland, IIRC), not Slimserver. I suggest you raise this in the Third
Party Plugins board. I'm not overfamiliar with this plugin, but my
guess is that you have it configured differently for the two players.

[slim] Slimserver Wireless Bridge and Hauppauge MediaMvp

2007-06-19 Thread DannyKudos

Hi Folks,

Has anyone tried running MediaMVP server on the same machine that hosts
your Slimserver, and then using squeezebox's wireless bridge to connect
to a MediaMVP box ?

Im not keen on streaming my audio via the MVP, but it would be cool to
stream video to my television (downstairs) from my server (upstairs)
using MediaMVP. The ethernet MVP box is pretty cheep, whereas their
wireless version is fairly expensive.

Anybody successfully achieved this ?

For me, the main advantages are:

- Proper playlist support
- Audio codec support e.g. Ogg, AAC, FLAC
- A shuffle function that actually works!
- The ability to browse by files or tags
- The ability to resume playback as soon as it powers up (without
having to press the play button)
- Comprehensive sound settings such as crossfeed, dithering, stereo
width etc.
- General ability to customise the interface and behaviour
- Improved startup time
- Active development of the codebase

There is also the added bonus of plugins, which add games, an image
viewer, MPEG movie player and other apps that may be of interest - but
these are not so important for me.

It is the perfect complement to users of Slimserver! ;-)

Have a look at the manual -

Could the Softsqueeze issue be firewall related? I mean the firewall at
where ever you are trying to connect from?

If you can get SSH set up, and get it working, that won't be an issue
anyway.

As for SSH setup, if you're on Windows, try using OpenSSH on Cygwin.
Straight forward to setup, and works very well. Gives you a nice bash
shell when logging into your windows PC (if you want it).

A 1 minute startup time certainly doesn't sound right, but in any case
I would suggest you read the "Rockbox" forum on the AnythingButiPod
site and try sticking Rockbox on your Sansa. As I've said elsewhere -
it has transformed my Sansa e280 into the best portable DAP I have ever
used. Agreed - this is mostly down to Rockbox, but the firmware/UI is
arguably the biggest factor in terms of how good a DAP is and at least
with the Sansa you have the opportunity to improve that aspect. In
terms of hardware the Sansa is a small and beautiful piece of kit with
a very decent battery life (and easily replaceable battery).

In my fairly modest experience of DAPs I've used a 1GB iRiver for 2+
years and my other half has an iPod Nano 2G (which I've used a few
times). Compared to these I would say that the Sansa with Rockbox on it
is head and shoulders above both of them.

Re: [slim] Cannot stream remotely

2007-06-19 Thread chris . mason

Also, as you are only streaming MP3, you don't need port 3483 open -
thats used by Softsqueeze and Squeezebox.

Can I make a suggestion? Irrationally, (or not), hearing that you have
got ports 9000 and 3483 open to the world gives me shivers...
What about using OpenSSH and forwarding those ports? As a network
admin, its possibly something you've come across before anyway.

Have a search on the forums - quite a few posts on how to do it.

I successfully stream my music (and radio stations, including Last.fm)
from home to office over SSH. I connect using both WinAmp and
Softsqueeze. I can't stream FLAC though - just don't have the
bandwidth, and I don't think my employers would be too pleased either.
I've succesfully streamed music from my PC in the UK to an office in
Colorado, USA before.

As for why SoftSqueeze won't play any FLAC files at all, that sounds
like a file format issue - in the slim web interface, go to Settings ->
File Types. Check that the FLAC to FLAC format is checked (it should
be, otherwise your Squeezebox probably wouldn't work).

Hope that helps.

Yes, that's a problem - stream.mp3 will only play back MP3 streams. If
you don't have LAME on the server it has no way to transcode.

SlimServer does not support FLAC streaming to any software client but
SoftSqueeze - however, most people don't have the bandwidth for it
anyway (you'd need 1500-2000 kbps upload at the server at all times).

This doesn't explain why SoftSqueeze won't work because that does
support FLAC streaming if your bandwidth will allow it, but baby steps
first.

I do not have Lame installed on the server, because all of my files are

I will add Lame to the server when I get home today and see if that

I don't use the Alarm feature myself, but if I understand the way the

In SlimServer, check your AUDIO options for the specific player that
does not play a startup (Player Settings -> Audio).

Then look at the option titled "Power on Resume." Do you have something
selected there that would not either continue or restart the song? Such
as the "Remain Stopped" option?

I think SuperQ is referring to building a Homeplug receiver into the
SB PSU, and the PSU into the SB, so that you don't need either an
ethernet cable or a wifi connection (you'd just plug the SB into a
regular power socket).
You'd still need the homeplug at the server end to send the signal,
but you'd save on one homeplug device (and probably pay for it in
extra SB cost, not to mention whatever interference issues would crop
up - something I know nothing about).
Cheers,

That doesn't surprise me. I just did a quick check of my own
collection, and out of 1135 albums, was surprised to find that 138 have
positive album_gain values. That's over 12%. (Perhaps I'm unusual in
having a fair number of CDs from the 80s and 90s, and quite a lot of LP
transfers which haven't been compressed to death).

But I have some good news. After examining the database structure,
there's a simple way to update it to "correct" the ReplayGain values:

Code:

  update albums
  set replay_gain = -20*log10(replay_peak)
  where -20*log10(replay_peak) < replay_gain;
  update tracks
  set replay_gain = -20*log10(replay_peak)
  where -20*log10(replay_peak) < replay_gain;
  commit;

(This does of course require you to have a MySQL client of some sort
available. The Query Browser Tool can be downloaded from
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/gui-tools/5.0.html for Windows, MacOS
and Linux).

I have updated the bug report to suggest that perhaps the scanner
process could do this as a final step.

Are you sure there's not an ARTISTSORT tag in the files? (see

To check, select one file in MP3Tag, and hit Alt-T - that should show

[slim] slimserver artist display question

2007-06-19 Thread pasil

Hi- I'm 2 weeks new to squeezebox but so far it's been awesome. One
glitch that I can't figure out. I have a library of 14000 songs
probably 1300 artists, don't use itunes, have server 6.5.3 running.
The library displays every artist but one in alphabetical order by
first name which is fine. But "Steve Earle" is ordered with the E's
-it is not displayed as Earle, Steve either. I've got three albums in
flac in one folder and a few songs as .mp3 in another folder and it has
filed them all this way. I've looked at all the tags of all the songs
in mp3tag and can't figure this out. Any idesa? Thanks, Paul

Agreed. But as you say, classical CDs often have positive RG values.
Since my collection covers a range of styles with a wide spread of
perceived loudness, I find RG to be very useful, and would prefer it
not to clip my classical albums.

Yes, I deliberately prepared an extreme example so as to make it
absolutely obvious that the clipping occurs. I also subsequently
uploaded a short extract of a real recording (Apassionata Sonata) that
also exhibits clipping when RG is used on the Squeezebox.

I can assure you that in my collection which sits at just over 20k
tracks right now, there were numerous tracks with positive RG when
calculating for a target of 89db. The overwhelming majority required
negative RG, but there were still a significant number of positives.

This process was for track RG, not Album RG. If I can find some script
to help me count, I'll see if I can find what the ratio is of negative
to positive gain throughout the collection.

That's not so bad. Often stuff that comes over here from the States ends up

The Logitech prices you are listing are MSRP and are inc. VAT. We
don't generally move prices with currency fluctuations, so the weak US
dollar versus strong EU$ & British Pound has a major impact as well.

Resellers set their own selling price, which is why you've seen it for
less than our suggested retail price.

Re: [slim] Crossfade problems with 6.5.2?

2007-06-19 Thread oriordan

Looks like rescanning the library fixed the problem. I was able to
re-enable the plug-ins and still have everything work properly.

It's odd that I had to do a complete rescan when I upgraded to 6.5.1 to
solve some problems and now a complete rescan when moving to 6.5.2 to
fix this.

In any case, problem solved and thanks for the help.

For the remote software player, go to Player Settings - Audio - Bitrate
Limiting. The paragraph should indicate if LAME is properly installed.
Also go to Server Settings - File Types - File Format Conversion Setup.
You should check the MP3 conversion of every format you have (keep the
native formats checked though or else your local players will get
transcoded MP3 too.)

I'm not sure why SoftSqueeze wouldn't be working though. Do you have
any evidence to show your ISP or your employer might be using bandwidth
shaping tools?

Re: [slim] Bug when using Replaygain

2007-06-19 Thread Mark Lanctot

There are reasons why this might not be as high a priority here as you
would like. Don't shoot the messenger here, I'm just thinking out
loud:

- RG values are overwhelmingly negative, mostly -7 to -10 dB. They are
very, very rarely positive, I'd say less than 5% of any CDs short of
classical you could buy today.

- your example was purposefully manipulated to an extreme. In my 4462
track collection the highest positive RG value I have is probably + 2
dB. +21.9 dB really means it's recorded improperly.

- audiophiles don't use RG anyway as they believe it introduces
distortion

[slim] Cannot stream remotely

2007-06-19 Thread mschiff

I have set up my server so that it is accessible on the web. I have
opened port 9000 and 3483 in my router and verified that they are open.
I can bring up the Slimserver web interface on my server from my remote
site with no problem, however, I can't stream any music either with
Softsqueeze or MediaMonkey. When I try with MediaMonkey to connect to
my server via:

http://myserveraddress:9000/stream.mp3, I see the IP address of my
remote system appearing in the Slimserver interface, but it won't play
anything. The play button is non-functional. I can create a playlist of
songs, but the current pointer always goes to the last song, and nothing
plays.

In Softsqueeze, it says "Please wait. Connecting to Slim Server", but
nothing ever happens. If I do these things locally on my network at
home, everything works beautifully, even if I use the outside address.

Any suggestions?

You're most likely talking about WPA - which 802.11b never supported.
802.11g has supported it from the beginning, but not all 802.11g
chipsets supported it. Those that don't are no longer in production.

If you're talking about WEP, certainly, that was broken long ago.
Dropping support for it in 802.11n would be a great idea so people
won't accidentally use it. Several on this thread have requested to
see what "new" security you're talking about and never received the
answer. It's WPA/PSK or WPA2/AES or some non-standard
manufacturer-specific thing that won't interoperate with equipment from
other manufacturers. These are "old" standards in that they're over
five years old (gasp!) There's nothing wrong with them provided you
aren't stupid about the passphrase - to perform a brute-force attack on
these would take on the order of thousands of years...

True, but in order to take advantage of this you only need it in the
router/AP - and you can do this with an 802.11g MIMO router. You don't
need this technology in a low-bandwidth end client like the SB.

Ah well this is totally opposite for us. Before our squeezeboxes
arrived (today!), I have been ripping internet radio stations for
years, and playing them back because the FM stations mostly play crap
chart music that we have no interest in...

So one of the big selling points for us is the ability to use shoutcast
streams, pandora & last.fm in addition to our CD "soon to be totally
FLAC" collection.

In fact improvement in syncing of stream playback would be a major plus
for me. And I'd love to have last.fm synced playback, which the plugin
doesnt support yet.

Cheers,
Menno

I really think this scanner needs to be sorted out! It's always giving
one problems! I remember on XP I was having issues when once in a while
it would go into a loop and run infinitely, or just get stuck somewhere.
Then a debug would usually indicate what the problem file was etc.

BUT NOW, on Vista, I've been trying to get the slimserver to scan a
partition on my hard disk where I keep all my music, and it's been
running for over 24 hours. The log shows nothing except:

Setup::rescan - initiating scan of type: [wipecache]

:(

How complicated can the scanner be?

[slim] Help reassembling SB3 remote control

2007-06-19 Thread Hamslay

Hi

Unfortunately my SB3 remote fell on to a tiled floor this morning and
split up into several pieces - back, front, batteries, PCB, clear
plastic with holes in it and rubber keypad.

Assuming I'm not missing any pieces, it seems that the PCB simply sits
in the back, the clear plastic is placed on to it (there are no lugs or
anything to hold it, and then the rubber keypad sits on top of the
plastic.

Unfortunately, no joy. I have a remote from another SB3 in the house
and that works with both players, but the reassembled remote won't do
anything with either player. I've checked the batteries are in OK (and
the battery connectors are in place). I'm guessing the drop broke the
LED or a solder joint.

Have I missed any bits which may have flown across the room? Apart from
the tips of the key backs pressing down on the PCB (is this how contact
is made, is there a conductive material on the back of the rubber
keys??) I can't see there's much more to it.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

£219 might be the list price? which is common for the manufacturer to
list. Amazon etc. will be selling it at cost+markup.

As far as the branding is concerned, you will probably get a Logitec
unit as Amazon were OOS for a long time so i doubt they have any of the
old runs left. They probably won't update the picture any time soon

[slim] Bug when using Replaygain

2007-06-19 Thread cliveb

A few days ago in another thread I reported the results of an experiment
which demonstrated that when using Replaygain, the Squeezebox can
introduce clipping if the RG value is positive. (Here's a link to that
report:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=208322&postcount=22)

I have now raised this as a bug report here:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5119

Initial response from Slim Devices doesn't seem to show too much
concern, which I found a little surprising. So I'm flagging it up here
in case anyone else feels this is something that ought to be sorted in
the reasonably near future. Please add your vote if you agree.

Re: [slim] Sansa Connect - internet radio on the go.

2007-06-19 Thread NauticusLX

I actually did purchase an e280 over the weekend, but returned it. I
may have overstated the case with the "Connect" being "the one", but it
does have a remarkable form factor and gui - it's VERY intuitive, and
seems not to be bogged down by extras, based on a hands-on trial. I
wanted to pick it up as soon as I saw it, and couldn't put it down once
I picked it up. That's saying something. Really, pick one up and spin
that dial, and watch each icon enlarge as it takes it's turn. It's SO
INTUITIVE. It's beautiful, but without looking like it should be "on
display". I find it hard to resist it's looks. I can't say the same
for any model of cell phone, which is 1 reason why I don't own a cell
phone, besides the "curse of the monthly bill". I wouldn't mind
ownning a blackberry pearl, for example, and paying for actual useage,
but that simply isn't an option, so I don't own one. It's like buying
something, but then paying a monthly rate on top of that. Outrageous.
