often can't connect to slimserver (75% signal). So now I'm thinking
it's a problem with the SB3. Any ideas?

A factory reset? Unplug your SB3, press and hold ADD while powering up.
You'll have to reconfigure the device.

Other than that... did anything else change in your network? New devices?

Re: [slim] Slimserver on Microsoft Windows Home Server OS?

2007-06-22 Thread Paul_B

I am not really sure what Microsoft are upto with WHS. The current
version is built on Windows 2003 Server which is almost at the end of
its life. The setup and general operation is straight from Small
Business Server (SBS) with a some additional customisation.

I would think that this product would suit a Longhorn Core
implementation much better. Then the hardware requirment drops
significantly and would suit fanless systems that could live in the
living room.

I think there is a way around this but it is not officially supported.
Perhaps Sonos is great if you have no end of money and want an enormous
number of clients - but if you are on a budget then the player stuck to
the pc thing and the significantly higher price is a massive turn-off.
Afterall the controller itself - the only one available - is the same

In all honesty I would love to see a simmilar controller for the

[slim] Duplicate songs

If you have all your music in MusicIP, then the easiest would be to simply

Do you have non-latin characters in the file/pathnames? IMHO MusicIP has a

Did you do a full rescan (wipe scan)?

+1 for everything said so far. However, in my experience, this is also a
function of the included remote. I have mapped my NAD remote to control
SB too (initially, for pure convenience) and have noticed that SB
reacts much better to it, than to its original remote. At first, though
it was about batteries, changed them and still, NAD remote with a year
old batteries gets better responiveness than the original one with
brand new batts. That includes FF/RW but also browsing and everything
else that is mapped.

Not that it's that crucial in this environment of noise, poor setup,

Totally kill the sound quality? Not in my opinion. YMMV. Certainly if
the speakers have RCA inputs then use those, but a lot of them just
have the 1/8 mini. If it's important to you, that's one of the
criteria that can help you pare down your choices. I think the Aego M
has RCA inputs, but it looks like the highly-praised Audioengine 5 only
has the 1/8 mini input (though I could be wrong about that).

BTW, some other active monitors that have gotten good mention are
Edirol and Swan. I think some of them even have digital input, although
that won't help you with a Slimp3 ;o)

I don't see how it could - the RCAs are merely electrically connected
to the various pins/rings on the jack in order to maintain a stereo
connection.

'Course it's a cable, and if you believe cables make a real difference
then there's that to consider. But they probably don't make $250/ft
cryogenically-treated silver-braided nitrogen-insulated RCA - 1/8
cables...

Going the other way though, 1/8 to RCA, has some definite impacts at
least on a Squeezebox (not the SliMP3, it doesn't have a headphone
output). The Squeezebox headphone output is attached to a small
headphone amp chip. If you amplify this again you'll have some issues.

Re: [slim] Fast forward/Rewind

2007-06-22 Thread MelonMonkey

Let's keep some things clear so the issue doesn't get lost or
misdirected.

Remote reception and strength is certainly a concern or source of
potential issue from one product to the next and can be affected by a
large number of variables. One handset in comparison to another for
starters can use different amounts of power to their IR LEDs, a
different number of LEDs, better filtered LEDs, etc.

The issue being discussed right now isn't about remote problems but a
problem that as users we perceive with the current implementation of
FFWD and REW.

We're not talking about a bug or transient issue, but the fundamental
design difference between the SB and any normal CD player (and
many/most other DAPs) with regards to forwarding and rewinding.

The current implementation while in playback mode (only tested with MP3
files):

Short press FFWD = skip to next track
Short press REW (1) = skip to start of track if elapsed track time
 certain offset
Short press REW (2) = skip to previous track if elapsed track time
 certain offset

Long press FFWD = activates an automatic 2x fast-forward mode
(releasing the button leaves the player in this mode)
Long press REW = activates an automatic 2x fast-rewind mode (releasing
the button leaves the player in this mode)

The 2x auto ffwd/rew sounds choppy and jumpy. You must be viewing the
two smaller Now Playing modes to know what's going on. There's no
FFWD/REW indicator when viewing in large font (this is also a big
problem)

Repeating the long-press will switch over to 4x then 8x, 16x and 32x
modes.

This is working similar to the FFWD and REW buttons on most DVD
players.

Expected behavior is that of a CD player:

Short presses = same as they are now, they're correct.

Long press FFWD = playback increases rate to some fixed x and less
choppiness should be present in the audio

Long press REW = playback increases reverse rate to some fixed x and
less choppiness should be present in the audio

In both cases, releasing the FFWD/REW buttons should cause normal 1x
forward playback to resume.

What this implementation loses is variable rate scanning. What it gains
is a better connection to the user in terms of function. There is a more
direct/tangible/immediate relationship between the pressing of buttons
and the output of the player. It is the expected behavior for anyone
that has ever used a late model tape player, CD player or many other
DAP products.

If many people like the DVD-like scanning modes, then this could always
be rolled into a configurable option. There are already so many I'm sure
another one won't cause a huge issue. All these hundreds of options need
to be hidden away for a more consumer interface anyway. And this mode
set up as a default will definitely cause much less confusion when
someone uses this product for the first time.

I just want to add the word Jive to this discussion since no one's
mentioned it yet.

If you look at the platform they're building there, it's a simple
intuitive leap to what Slim might be thinking. And that would be
something like a Sonos-like controller. The good news is that seems
like it would be an add-on to the current technology, not a mandatory

I don't have any inside information on this--I'm just making logical

Re: [slim] Sonos now available at Best Buy

2007-06-22 Thread MelonMonkey

With a WiFi PDA you are nowhere near the level of integration of a
purpose-built controller/interface. Not even close to the level of
polish of the Sonos product.

The Slimserver skins all offer some level of advanced control and some
pretty cool features, but there's no arguing that they all have a
certain level of geek appeal that is not suitable or at least will not
make a statement to a consumer-level audience.

No sense in discussing the positives or benefits the current SB
products have. We all know them already, that's why we bought what we
did and continue to use them. The SB product is the best, but you have
to look at yourself and realize who you are. You (and me of course) are
not the typical consumer.

No one, including me, has suggested making it a requirement to have a
control pad nor to remove the display of any current or future Slim
product. I only mentioned that the availability of a finished,
primarily screen-based controller, would be an extremely valuable
addition to Slim's product portfolio.

End users hacking together PDA's with web skins is not the same thing.
There isn't a PDA out there that's as cool or functional as the Sonos
controller. Every MS PDA also loses all its software when the battery
runs dead (I have two and they're garbage devices).

[slim] Access via Hotel WiFi

2007-06-22 Thread Eric Seaberg

I've had my SB3 with me the last two out-of-town trips and can't connect
to my server at home... I can't even connect to SqueezeNetwork, so I'm
assuming the hotel firewall is blocking the required ports on their
router, yes?

FWIW, I am able to connect from my office to my home system without
issue... but that's back in San Diego. IT DOES WORK. I can see the
server with my MacBook Pro, so there's not an issue with port 9000,
right?

Any help would be appreciated... I want my music back!!

Re: [slim] Access via Hotel WiFi

2007-06-22 Thread seanadams

Do they bill your room for service? If so then they are probably
allowing access only for the machine you use to sign on.

On your Mac try opening System Preferences - Network - Ethernet to
see the Ethernet ID (aka MAC address).

The in the SB3 setup menu go to Current settings - MAC address, and
press right again to edit it. Set it the same as your laptop's MAC,
then unplug the laptop and plug in the SB3 and it might work.

You may have problems with Squeezenetwork since the MAC address will
not be right. I'm not really sure what will happen, but you will at
least have to re-associate the player with your SN account.

A lot of Free WIFIs force you to go through a Proxy WebSite to accept
terms even if it's free. It's probably getting blocked there. Almost
every airport and hotel I've been at has this and you can't get on
until you click through that web site.

location gig for the next 10-days and have multiple production suites

Changing the MAC address of the SB3 DID WORK!! That confirms the

original MAC address of my SB3 to see if they'll allow it to pass,
knowing that it's only a dumb playback device.

Thanks for the quick responses, guys!!

[slim] Squeezebox and Digital TV signal don't play nice together.

2007-06-22 Thread givendale

Hi All,

Picture this, you spend hours in an unheated room of the house setting
up the HTPC so it is a simple as possible to use and works just how you
want it to.

You then get excited because you can now leave the nasty end of the
house and go into the warmth of the lounge room and rack the HTPC. Give
the big wind up to the significant other about how good things work and
BAM, no TV. Does not look good to significant other.

Un-rack HPC and go back to Siberia, plug everything in and every thing
works OK.

Go through this process several times before reaching breaking point
and thinking it's the aerial cable. Replace supposedly faulty aerial
cable with new one but this one travels a slightly different route. TV
comes on. Then begin to move new cable into desired cable run whch
travels behind AV receiver, CD, Squeezebox etc and the TV stops
working. What tha..!!!???

Move cable in front of Squeezebox and TV signal works, move cable
behind SB and TV stops. Leave cable behind and unplug SB and all works
again. Repeat until satisfied.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Alternative cable run has fixed the problem for now but I am a bit
baffled.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

what kind of signal cable are we talking about here? I assume it
probably has to do with RF issues. I am going to guess this is a

2007-06-22 Thread JJZolx

givendale;210488 Wrote:

You're not going to be able to access it remotely. The default
configuration for the bundled MySQL only listens on IP address
127.0.0.1 (localhost). Which means that it will only accept
connections coming from the machine itself. To listen on other IP
addresses you'll need to edit the /server/MySQL/my.tt file and restart
both MySQL and SlimServer.

Change the line:

bind-address = 127.0.0.1

Either set it to a single IP address (the IP address of the server).
For example,

bind-address = 192.168.1.5

or else delete the line or comment it out, as in:

#bind-address = 127.0.0.1

If you delete the line or comment it out, then MySQL will listen on all
IP addresses that the machine may have, which won't hurt anything.

The port is 9092, the username is 'slimserver', and the password is
blank.

Firt thing to do is connect it via _wire_ - a known good Ethernet patch

figure out how you can have it wired and be able to listen while

Only after you know whether it's the network connection causing

external MAC - I think most do. Then SB3 would report its correct MAC
to Squeezenetwork, and you could use both machines at the same time.

Yea but I'm aready wirelessdo I take an AirPort and use it as a
'bridge' with the SB3 talking to it and it talks to the hotel network?

I may have to spend my late evening hours working on this!!! The
network people called me back saying they've created a public IP
address next time I login. They're still thinking I LOGIN with a
browser.

Anyhow... we try again tomorrow (they're in Nashville and I'm in
California... seems like a much more distant time zone).

Let's say I go to a friends house and I hardwire the sb3 to his router
(or is even wireless possible?). then what? how do I connect to my
slimserver at home and stream music at my friends house?

Set-up your home firewall software and/or router hardware to allow
incoming connections to ports 3483 and 9000 for both UDP and TCP
connections. You'll have to set-up port forwarding if you have NAT
function on your router. Set-up your slimserver security not to block
incoming connections.

At your friends, on the SB3 press and hold the left arrow button for
five seconds to go back to the main setup menu, go into networks and
enter the DNS for of your home system. (Or static IP if you have it).

Depending on what bandwidth you have and the file formats, you may have
to set the slimserver to transcode lossless down to MP3 or you'll get
network congestion.
