Re: [slim] Missing artists with 6.5.3

2007-07-25 Thread HalNineThousand

I just found this thread while searching for artist tag issues. I'm
using:

SlimServer Version: 6.5.3 - 12376 - Debian - EN - iso-8859-1

and NONE of the artists in my collection are showing up. All my files
are flac files and do have artists listed (they show up in Amarok and
I've checked the tags manually in a few files so I could be sure I'd
get at least one or two artists). I've rescanned my collection a few
times, but no artist.

When I was testing with Slimserver on a different computer but reading
the same files over an NFS share, using version 6.3.0 from the
Slimdevices repository on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn, the artists did show up.
I tried testing again with 6.5.3 on the Ubuntu computer, but the web
interface never worked.

Any idea how I can get the artists to show? I am used to (and prefer)
browsing by artists.

Thanks!

[slim] Library size differs between slimserver and iTunes (using exact same music folder)

2007-07-25 Thread Bixby

I have a library that I created completely with iTunes (ripping). When I
have slimserver scan that music folder, the number of songs it comes up
with are different than what iTunes reports - by 18. Anyone know what
causes this? I'm inclined to think the iTunes number is correct, as I'm
also having troubles (which I'm working on with support) using the use
iTunes function of the slimserver.

I even created a new iTunes library and imported all the music from
that folder into it - and after doing that both iTunes and slimserver
(after scanning that same folder) reported a different number (by about
20 songs).

Thanks!

If the tags are properly set, and you dont care much about filenames (I
only use file tags in SB) you can use any automated tool like tag
rename, foobar2000 or any standard renamer and just assign them
autonames. If I'm not mistaken, with tag rename you can even copy the
title tag to the file name with your chosen character set.

In regards to playlists, check that paths in the playlists are valid

If you ever return to your original faulty Ubuntu install, the first
thing would be a complete removal of SlimServer through Synaptic using
the Mark for complete removal (double-checking that slimserver.pref

As far as I can tell, the 555 / 550 works the same way as the 880;
extra functions are in the database on Logitech's site, and you just
assign them to soft buttons (the ones up by the LCD screen).
On the 880 you get 8 'slots' per page (for 8 buttons of your
choosing), and on the 550 I think it's 4. Either way you get a button
to move forward and backwards through the pages of buttons you've
defined, so there's no problem getting them all in there.

For me, the cradle is the biggest differentiator, but there's also a
bunch of small things that (for me) incrementally make a big
difference... like having 8 soft-buttons; having 8 of the most
commonly used functions at hand is pretty useful, and I think that
dropping it to 4 would be limiting.
I'm sure that someone who has the 550 / 555 can comment further, or
maybe there's someone out there with both?

I would seriously re-consider not buying a Harmony remote

1) Require a net connection
2) Can't save your profile locally
3) Have to rely that Harmony servers are up

You can't do a thing unless you have net.

Other remotes have ability to configure locally and save the file to

Only for the initial setup (and the occasional reconfig) - and for
many devices this is common. The first thing I did when I installed
my squeezebox is download the latest slimserver and firmware.

 2) Can't save your profile locally
True - this would be nice, although I've never had a problem getting

needed a locally saved profile.

Actually, the remote works fine 99.9% of the time without a network
connection... it's just when you want to reconfigure it that a web
connection is needed. And for my money, the added benefit of all the
user-contributed profiles is well worth the requirement of online
configuration.

[slim] Problems with accessing library

I was able to successfully add my music library to Slimserver, but when
I try to browse my music, it says waiting for 127.0.0.1 and loading
and finally just returns with no response.

I can *temporarily* resolve the problem by rebooting the computer. It
will work for a while (ranging from a few minutes to an hour or two)
but then go back to the same issue.

I was on the phone with tech support yesterday, and we explored the
following strategies:

i) firewall: it already had the exceptions for the required ports.

ii) internal versus external drive: I copied my library from an
external (USB) drive to my internal drive, but the problem persists.

Anyone have this problem and can help? My OS is Windows XP
Professional Ver 5.1 Service Pack 2.

Thanks!

I understand that if you have a DSL connection it isn't a problem. I do
have DSL, but even so I don't like the idea of Harmony design. If you're
a CI this required net connection is stupid, my local dealer had to
configure a Harmony remote for a client, but the Harmony servers were
updating, so couldn't configure it. Also many bulds are half-way
through re-wiring, so no phone line/network setup yet. He had to go
back to next day for a 5 minute job. Luckily it's local.

A mate has a learning remote, but he doesn't have net connection at
home, only at work, or round mine. So he couldn't change anything until
the next day!

You can't save the profile locally. So if Harmony loses your config
you're stuffed, you'll need to start again. A while ago Harmonys server
did in fact wipe customers profiles. If you had a copy locally at least
you could upload it.

I would be totally furious if that happened, configuring my remote from
scratch takes a couple of hours (controls two systems, lots of macros,
shortcuts, discrete IR codes etc)

This is my remote btw. The Editor is off-line, you don't need LAN
connection, so you can configure it in situ on a laptop with serial
port. It's a older model but probably URC have new one

http://www.remotecentral.com/mx700/index.html

You can also configure it how you like. The Harmony config looks
incredibly clunky (I used the demo and hated it)

Re: [slim] Harmony remotes

2007-07-25 Thread Secret Squirrel

I got an 880 for Christmas and LOVE it. It cleared the table of five
remotes, and very rarely do I need to pull one out of the darkness.

Having Harmony store my setup is no issue for me. I have a cable
connection and set up was a breeze. Okay, it took me two tries to get
everything perfect but that consumed all of about fifteen minutes total
(a lot of the was walking back and forth to from basement to my office).
As a result, I have no concern if my set up were lost on the Harmony as
it would just take moments to setup again.

One note: Sitting the remote on the cradle is a little bit of a
challenge because it can be easily done so that contact is not made (so
take your time and listen for the beep). I came back from vacation to
find a dead remote, and I thought I'd have to set it up again.
However, after a five minute charge in the cradle all was back without
need to link up to the Internet.

I think it's a GREAT remote and recommend it highly. Your results may
vary but Harmony (Logitech) has had breat support in my experience.

HTH,

SS

Re: [slim] Harmony remotes

2007-07-25 Thread Geoff B
On 7/25/07, badbob wrote:
I understand that if you have a DSL connection it isn't a problem. I do
have DSL, but even so I don't like the idea of Harmony design. If you're
a CI this required net connection is stupid, my local dealer had to
configure a Harmony remote for a client, but the Harmony servers were
updating, so couldn't configure it. Also many bulds are half-way
through re-wiring, so no phone line/network setup yet. He had to go
back to next day for a 5 minute job. Luckily it's local.
This is true if you're an installer. Just a guess, but I'm pretty
sure the OP isn't looking for something to use in an installer
business - but I could be wrong. I have a cable connection, but even
with a dial-up I can't imagine this being a massive issue.

You can't save the profile locally. So if Harmony loses your config
you're stuffed, you'll need to start again. A while ago Harmonys server
did in fact wipe customers profiles. If you had a copy locally at least
 you could upload it.
This hasn't happened to me yet, and I've had the remote for a year.

I would be totally furious if that happened, configuring my remote from
scratch takes a couple of hours (controls two systems, lots of macros,
 shortcuts, discrete IR codes etc)
Do you mean configuring the MX-700 (the link you provided) takes a
couple of hours? You might want to switch to the 880 ;-)

Seriously though, overall I think the most common criticisms that come
up in reviews are valid:
 - The software is a bit finnicky at first (but it has improved a lot IMHO)
 - The cradle had some connection issues (apparently resolved with
later hardware- and Logitech's replacement service was VERY efficient
here, at least for me)
 - The price. This is an upper-end remote, but for me this is well
worth for the WAF, the ease of setup and the overall seamless
experience. YMMV...

I'd also look at Windows task manager to see how much free memory is

WinXP really needs at least 1Gb of RAM to be useful.

What does the Commit Charge at the bottom of the task manager window

In case you're not familiar, you can use Start-Run type taskmgr to

Yes there is. I started with WPA2, but the SB is incompatible with the
new Airport Extreme in anything but 802.11 b or g and 40 bit WEP. The
problem as I suspected is that the SB doesn't work that well with the

work with that specific router. Having to cripple it to make it work

Re: [slim] Phone calls cause SB to turn off.

2007-07-25 Thread egd

I presume your SB is connecting to your network wirelessly. If this is
the case the likely cause is the wirless channel being used by the sb3
clashing with that used by the phone. Try to reconfigure your WAP to
use a different channel. If that doesn't resolve the problem get a
pair of netplugs and use your home's power lines to act as your
network. IMHO a wired connection is a much better solution for
streaming lossless audio. I've been using netplugs for quite some time
now and have never had any issues - they just work.

I'm not sure where you're ordering from but you should also look at the
670 as a middle point between the 550 and the 880 in terms of
functionality, but just a little more than the 550 in price.

For me the fact that it was half price opposite the 880 (in the US on
Amazon) was the difference.

It has backlighting, letters for lazy search and 6 soft buttons. I know
the 880 has the charging cradle (not sure whether this a plus or minus
based on the reviews :) ) motion sensor, and color buttons, but I just
felt wrong about a remote costing more than some of the components it
controls. :p

Re: [slim] Harmony remotes

2007-07-25 Thread sclamage

I have a 550 also and I really like it. It's far from my perfect remote
- I'm still waiting for the successor to the current generation of
Harmony remotes, which (I assume) will incorporate the new Jive
platform and will (I hope) allow me to browse my library directly on
the remote. But I needed a new universal remote sooner than that, so I
got the least expensive Harmony currently available. When the fancy one
comes out, I'll buy that, and move my 555 into the bedroom.

I don't like the online programming either, but it works OK and I live
with it to have a remote with such a high WAF.

In regards to your original question, I have one other thing to point
out: You can also reprogram the hard buttons, some of which will have
no meaning when the Squeezebox is your current activity. I have the
Guide button programmed to bring up the Search menu, so I don't have
to page through the soft buttons. There are also four more hard buttons
along the bottom (Sound, Picture, A, B) that can be repurposed,
if you have a good memory. With all of those buttons available I
haven't regretted not having the 880.

Re: [slim] Harmony remotes

2007-07-25 Thread WhaleOil

I have a Logitech 555 and am very happy with it. I have had it since
Christmas last year and the batteries are still going strong - I can
live with changing four AAA batteries every nine months or so, so
having a charging cradle isn't a big deal for me. It would be nice to
have more 'soft' buttons, but I have programmed mine to give useful
functions to the 'hard' Menu, Exit, Guide and Info buttons that do the
job for me for just about everything I need to do.

I set it up using the website, and after a few goes got a set up that
worked for me - haven't had to go back to the website since, so again
that is not a problem.

Overall, highly recommended, and for my money the 555 seems to be at
the sweet spot of value for money vs features.

Your phone and wireless router/access point are likely both in the
2.4Ghz wireless range.

You need to go into the admin interface for the router and change the
wireless channel. You will have 11 to choose from.

You might also want to go get a phone that operates in the 5.2 Ghz

When I use the phone, the SqueezeBox turns off. For calls out, simply
turning on the phone is the trigger. Both the phone and DSL share the
same jack, with s splitter. A filter is on the phone line, supplied by
Verizon. The problem persists when the phone is plugged into a
different outlet. The phone is about 10 years old, a Panasonic
wireless model. For long calls, the SB connection is restored, with
the display showing now playing but no music actually playing, but
then disconnects again when I hang up. The problem also occurs when
the answering machine picks-up. This is a VERY annoying problem,
especially if I'm busy with the phone. I don't want to switch back to
cable internet since DSL is cheaper and the installation is simpler.

Has anybody else experienced this problem?

Re: [slim] Display Freezes/SB3 Non Respond

2007-07-25 Thread tubes-n-horns

Attached is a screen shot of Task Manager/Performance. Not captured in
the photo, at the bottom of the Task Manager window, it says,
Processes: 43, CPU Usage: 5%, Commit Charge: 452M/12.

I did a uninstall/reinstall of SlimServer. Funny thing that the XM
Plugin was already installed. Guess the uninstall doesn't work so well.
Anyhow, I disabled XM and verified on the SB3 that it is not available.

Right now I am streaming some 24/96 FLAC files from my NAS and it is
having no trouble keeping up. I notice that the memory usage goes up
slightly and the CPU usage peaks around 25% occasionaly. Looks like the
physical memory is indeed very low! Hope that's not the real culprit,
cause I don't think I can put any more RAM in this box. I hate
name-brand boxes! Note when I stop SlimServer available RAM goes up to
over 200MB.

I will mess around and see if I can duplicate the problem.

Yes, it probably means that nobody experienced anything quite like this --
at least those that read this forum. The way the problem manifests, it
sounds like SlimServer is blocking or is non-responsive. If the server CPU
usage is spiking at the dropout times then check to see if there is a
periodic task that runs. If it doesn't spike, then it points to a plugin
that might be doing blocking I/O. The 6.5.3 server is single-threaded but
I've seen very few reports of problems like you are having -- at least with
a vanilla installation.

The fact that things work fine over SqueezeNetwork indicates to me that it's
probably not connectivity (wireless vs. wired) so I would not focus on that
angle. It certainly could be connectivity, but less likely in my opinion.

If all else fails you should definitely contact the official SlimDevices
technical support resources.

Re: [slim] Acoustic coupling

2007-07-25 Thread pfarrell

Yes, Tube(valve) amps have serious problems with this because nearly all
tubes are, or can become, microphonic. Microphonic is the term of art to
describe when physicially shaking the tube causes it to act as a
microphone. Very bad in general for audio quality.

Turntables, remember them? have always had problems with acoustic
coupling, either from heavy feet clomping as they dance, or speakers
causing the turntable to vibrate in sync.

I believe forum member snarlydwarf had this problem.

Couldn't you at least try power-cycling the router, use SlimServer a
bit, then use bittorrent and see if SlimServer performance degrades?

Well it wasn't BT, I only use that to download files from DGMLive
(legal, but I'd be broke if I downloaded everything :))

My problem got really nasty when I opened a port to allow http through
so I could move a site home. Hardly a high traffic site, but the
router seemed to want to maintain state for every connection (which it
really shouldn't need to do for passthrough... if the IP/port match,
pass it, no need for NAT tables...)

Very odd network failures: Local activity was usually OK, but I could
not bring up the router config page. I could SSH home from work, and
run VNC... which worked just fine. But Softsqueeze would fail (it
would have probably worked fine over an ssh tunnel). I usually
couldn't even ping the router when it died. (And, yes, I usually could
at least from the home lan...)

Now that my router is a genuine Linux box with plenty of RAM, that
doesn't happen. (And it is on anyway, since it is my router,
fileserver, music server, web server, etc.)
