[slim] Old mac or old pc as slimserver
Fishing for some advice My 'garage pc' just fell over again and as the slimserver machine that's really annoying, no music! Some hardware/power failure this time which I may not be able to fix. So I start looking round on ebay to buy another 5 year old beige box and use that as the server. Then I thought how about an old mac, as a recent convert to OSX, I am impressed, and was thinking maybe even old macs will be well built and won't fall over. So which is more reliable (and will slimserver run?) a no-name beige pc or a powermac G4 (400Mhz or so), as I can get both for around £50 from ebay if I look hard enough. I think I can cram in the IDE hard drives I bought for my 'server' in to either. I haven't been able to find the minimum requirements for slimserver beyond OSX 10.3, but I did try. Am I just trying to justify another Apple purchase! -- sdevans sdevans's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1867 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39312 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Does SlimDevices plan to exhibit at Rocky Mountain AudioFest
I just got back from RMAF, which I enjoyed immensely. Squeezeboxes and Transporters WERE used in quite a few demo rooms, as were the Sonos product(s) and various computers for streaming playback. There was a panel discussion (Fri and Sat) about music streaming/servers which featured reps from Sonos, Logitech, a local Denver high-end A/V installer, and a fourth vendor whom I can't recall. The Logitech guy was from their Harmony remote division (?), but represented the line well. I attended the Fri session, and they focused on the BASICS of streaming, covering the pros/cons of lossy vs. lossless codecs, music downloading, ripping, storage, etc. with some QA time afterwards. There were no demos given. Only NEW info I gleaned from the session was their mention of a free program called URL Sniffer which identifies the precise URL to use for Internet Radio. If anybody has a link for the latest version, please post! As mentioned, various demo rooms had Squeezeboxes or Transporters, in use. Modwright had their modded tube-rectified Transporter there (and the new USB Benchmark DAC) but unfortunately it wasn't being used at the time I stopped by. Regardless, it's clear that computer/streaming has truly achieved audiophile acceptance. I believe 'The Absolute Sound' plans an upcoming feature covering this emerging market. Re: [slim] Old mac or old pc as slimserver
Fishing for some advice If you want a set-it and forget-it system I suggest you get whatever you know best. Since my family use the Squeezeboxen I try to keep my slimserver running this way as I'm the only one who can debug problems and the rest of the family is annoyed if the music stops. :-) If you want something for fun/exploration/learning, it sounds like you want OS X. I've run slimserver since the days of the SLIMP3 under a variety of OS X verions without any trouble, so i t certainly can well there. My bias is toward OS X and BSD variants, but that's me. I spend more time on care and feeding of the one Windows system that connects to the internet that we have than all the other computers combined. (Though on a virtual Windows machine that never touches the internet, I haven't had problems with it. It's nice for the OS not to be under constant attack.) Re: [slim] Applying a patch?
lemmy999;235267 Wrote: I am currently running Slimserver 6.5.4 on a Windows machine. I was wondering how you apply a patch In short, you don't. If you have installed the windows version using the installer, everything is pre-compiled. The source is included, but any changes will have no effect aside from the Plugin modules. If you wish to run the server manually, you can install ActivePerl from activatestate.com and run slimserver.pl from a command session. This will use the source modules at runtime. You can apply a patch, usually with the command: patch -p0 patchfile replacing patchfile with the name of the patch file you need to use. If you don't have the patch command on your system (windows doesn't usually have dev tools installed) then you are stuck doing it manually (unless you install some third party app). Remove the lines with '-' at the start, replacing them with the lines starting with '+'. The filenames are given for each group, with line numbers to help you find things. All files are text files with unix-style line endings, so you'll want to use wordpad to edit them (notepad would be messy). Programs like UltraEdit and TextPad are great for this. TortoiseSVN is a good option if you want to do a direct check out of code from SD and it supports applying patches as a menu option. -kdf -- kdf kdf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39326 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Thanks. One last question concerning applying the patch though. I assume the revision numbers in the patch have to match the ones in the .pm files that are going to be modified. The revisions are only there for reference. If the code that you are patching is similar enough, then the patch program will find the right place based on the extra lines either side of the changed lines. If it cannot find the right place, the hunk will fail, and you'll be left to sort out the rejected hunks manually. Re: [slim] Buffer fullness
My guess is that your wireless link is experiencing interference which is limiting the bandwidth available (FLAC requires a lot more capacity to stream than something like mp3). To prove (or disprove) this theory try hooking the SB up with a cable rather than wireless for a while and see if you still have the problem. If not, then it's the wireless. In terms of fixing it, there are a few things to try. Can you reposition the base station/router to be closer to the SB? Can you switch the channel it is operating on to one with less interference? You could also try replacing the antenna with something directional. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39325 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Any more ideas would be appreciated... this is most annoying, I know when the Squeezebox works it is awesome, as it was on my last wireless router (which sadly died!) Thanks in advance! having just gone through this i would suggest the following changes: 1. Downgrade your NETGEAR firmware to V1.03.18 2. Change your wireless channel (mine was 11 and is now 2). 3. upgrade Slimserver to the latest release (i'm currently using 6.5.2) 4. Try using WEP first (WPA is a little jumpy), when you do this enter the key manually in the NETGEAR settings. I tried entering the key via a passphrase that i entered and the SB3 wasn't liking it. Its worth nting that this time last week i was having a whole host of problems with the DG834PN which now seem to be sorted so a little perseverance and logical problem solving and you'll get it cracked in no time! -- Big AAC Big AAC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13457 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21764 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Vote of thanks
As I've said in other threads, i've been an avid follower of SD since I first read about them on Slashdot back in 2001. I love my two SB3s and would gladly expand my collection if only i had somewhere to put them (1 bedroom apartment at the moment). I have a SliMP3 in a box waiting to find a home. I do get the feeling that the concept is finally coming of age now. With the Transporter things got serious o the audio front, SC7 has seems to be kicking the software up a gear and Jive shows a lot of potential for taking things forward. Being invited to take part in the beta team on Jive felt like quite an honour for me :) Thank you for all the ahrd work that has gone into these products. Re: [slim] Vote of thanks
I agree as well, thanks. The SB has changed my life. No more CD's all over the house. I now buy CD's with reckless abandon and I also download FLACs from DimeADozen and Zappateers. Any music that I didn't know how to store (like out of print LP's that I recorded to CD) are now neatly organized on my hard drive. The only drawback is that now I'm too lazy to grab my SACD's and play them even though I think they sound slightly better on my Marantz DV-9600 than the Redbook layer that I ripped to my hard drive (I guess not better enough to get off of my lazy a** and put one on!) I also kind of miss the CD liner notes and I sometimes grab a CD and read them. -- fred7 fred7's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6523 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39322 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
