The picture of the more expensive one shows the Slim Devices logo, the
cheaper one shows the Logitech logo. I wonder if anyone daft enough to
pay the extra really will get a SD branded SB3?

Re: [slim] Large music library = slow Slimserver??

2007-12-12 Thread ralphpnj

Are your disks spinning down to save power? This sounds like SlimServer
had to wait for the disk to wake up or something. Do you see similar
behavior when using the normal browse by album/genre/artist list?

I'm aware that the external hard drives sometimes have to be woken up
by Slimserver and then get back up to speed before the music can start
playing but the behavior I'm talking about with the browse Music Folder
command happens even after the hard drives are already awake and
spinning.

As far the behavior of the normal browse command goes, it seems to
work okay but then because of the size of my music collection I don't
tend to use the browse command to find music. In other words, no, the
browse command appears to work fine when browsing by
album/genre/artist.

That's just what happens when a machine is under heavy load: every app
is slowing down. If SlimServer doesn't have the resources to stream
then your player will start stuttering. This can be a problem when
you're playing APE which has to be transcoded for playback.

This is another type of behavior that I'm well aware of and as such I
try to limit the load on my computer when using Slimserver, so for
example, I run all my virus and spyware scans while the machine is
otherwise idle and Slimserver is running but not active (not serving
any files to my devices).

This sounds like a bug to me. Do you get error messages, timeouts? How
does it manifest the failure?

There is no manifestation, the page just never loads into my browser.
No error messages, timeouts - nothing - just a blank half of the
Slimserver web page with the browse (Firefox) indicating that the page
is loading. And no matter how many times I reload the page, it just
never loads or displays when trying to display albums. The page loads
fine, if somewhat slowly, when displaying anything other then albums.
The right hand side of the page with the now playing display loads just
fine.

Memory and disk speed might be more important in your case. How much
memory do you typically have left?

Windows task manager reports that Slimserver is using just over 100K of
memory with usually under 10% of the CPU usage.

Some of your issues sound like real bugs to me (page not showing up),
or are probably due to some hardware configuration (disks spinning
up/down?). While we might have fixed the bugs, we can't fix your
hardware.

I can understand a bug but this behavior (not loading the album
display) happened with the previous version of Slimserver as well.

Can't say - I'm at 10% of your size :-).

I'm sorry about that :-) however, it seems that the behavior of
Slimserver with large music libraries is not that well understood, and
based on the these odd behavior issues with my large music collection,
not all that well implemented.

[slim] Multiple file type sorting possibilities

2007-12-12 Thread booguss

Hi!
I've started to re-rip some of my favorite albums into FLAC (iso mp3)
alt. re-rip to a higher mp3 bitrate.

I just put the FLAC's and new mp3's into their respective folders
(albums) and remove the old mp3's. However, my collection is quite big
and soon I can't keep track on which of my albums are FLAC or high
bitrate mp3 and which are my old mp3…
I think I've read somewhere about sorting by file type etc, but now I
can't find it in the forum….:-/

So, is there a way to

a) sort by file type or bitrate in the Web UI?
b) browse by file type or bitrate on the SB3?

Cheers!

/b00

I very much doubt that this is the case. SlimServer just isn't that
compact - 100 *M* I could understand, but not 100 K. If it really is
100K then I'd expect that the bulk of slimserver would be paged out,
which might explain some of the slowdown.

ralphpnj;248507 Wrote:

I don't think your library size is exceptional; it's twice the size of
mine (4231 alb, 50057 trk, 1211 art), but I've seem people comment on
here about their collection sizes being larger than this.

Things that rang alarm bells with me in your description were...

4 external USB drives. These will be slower than directly connected
drives, depending on the interface, and layout. In particularly, if the
hubs only support USB 1.1 you'll find yourself crippled (you don't say
what you're doing). Similarly, if they're all hung off the same hub
they won't be as fast (although still a lot faster than the USB 1.1).
Plugging into a different port on the machine doesn't mean they're on a
different hub. Check in device manager ('show by connection') to see
which physical hub controller each drive is connected to. This
shouldn't cause the large slow down you are seeing. For reference, I
use a single 500G drive for all my music, connected internally.

Windows. I use linux. I wouldn't run SlimServer on Windows. People do.
Many of the comments I've seen on here about problems have been from
people with Windows. Probably a higher percentage of Windows users. But
it rang an alarm bell with me.

Stopping playing under heavy load: You say 'when you're copying files
or other intensive disc operations'. This may be related to the
architecture mentioned above. If you are actually copying files on the
USB devices then you're going to see a penalty. A big one usually. If
you copy between devices on different hubs you'll see more of a penalty
(more hubs to deal with means more work although the overall transfer
can in theory be faster because the writing can be done concurrently
with the reading, whereas a single hub will be serialising the requests
so less work to be done at the cost of longer overall transfer time).
If, of course, you're copying files on the drive that you're playing
from then I'd pretty much expect to see poor performance as multiple
clients vie for access to the same devices over the same hub. This will
be worse if you're using FLAC because the bitrate must be higher than
MP3 (I use MP3 exclusively, so I can't say how much worse or
whatever).

File formats. As indicated above, the file formats may incur a cost.
The amount of data to be transferred for FLAC is higher than for MP3,
although not by a factor that should cause stalling. APE, is AIUI a
proprietary format, and I'm certain isn't supported by the squeezebox
natively. That means it must be transcoded to a format that is
supported natively - I'd expect it'd use the APE-WAV decode route, or
possible APE-WAV-FLAC. The latter is more expensive in CPU time and
might be an issue. The former is expensive in bandwidth requirements
and might be related to any problems seen with the wireless...

Wireless. You're using a wireless, so check the buffer fullness and
signal strength under normal circumstances. If they're low 'normally'
then it may be that your wireless is effectively dropping out
occassionally and this will require retransmissions - if the data is
having a hard time getting to the squeezebox then any additional
problems, like server load, will make that worse.

None of the above may be problems, but they do ring alarm bells for
things to look at and considerations.

Otherwise I suggest the following answers to your questions...

Q. Would a faster CPU help ?
A. I don't believe so. I have previously run the SQLite based version
with the collection only slightly smaller than it is now, on a 500MHz
processor (SQlite being significantly slower for a lot of operations)
and did not see the sort of slow behaviour you were seeing. Similarly,
I've run the current version with my harddrives in PIO mode (trust me,
this is more painfully slow than USB 1.1) and didn't see the timeout
issue you were seeing at all.

Q. Would fewer drives help ?
A. Not sure. Not putting them on external USB would help more, I
believe, but couldn't quantify or justify other than USB overheads. You
would gain from single drive spin up, and only having to read a single
file allocation table (or equivilent for the disc format you're using).
I would consider checking the disc format

2007-12-12 Thread bpa

The 4600 is supposed to have 8 USB 2.0 ports but it is not clear if it
is one or two controllers. Other peripherals (especially USB 1.0 only)
can affect USB performance - what else do you have on the USB ?

Another point about all the disk on USB and possible off one USB
controller. If the shortcuts is on one of the USB drives - then it may
be accessed first before going to the USB drive with the actual data -
so you have additional USB control and data traffic.

I would move the top level Music directory to a disk on the PC itself
and have the shortcuts on this IDE disk to the 4 USB drives.

Another possibility is install a PCI USB 2.0 card and hang two off the
drives off it.

Re: [slim] Wow - Squeezebox in Frys

On a slight tangent, I bought my Squeezebox from PC World over here in
UK this week. They and the other members of their group are the biggest
high street electronics chain in the UK I think. I guess this is one of
the things logitech brings to the party.

I still think they are struggling to know where to position it in the
stores as I had to search around all the sections I thought it might be
in, and then the ones I didnt think it'd be in to track them down. The
staff had even less of a clue what does it look like? etc, although
that could just be down to them being particularly stupid :)

Glad to see it breaking through a bit, and actually at an extremely
competitive price point for the UK.

Thank you gerph and mherger for your carefully thought out replies, I
really appreciate the effort involved.

To answer some of the various questions that have been asked and
comments that have been made:

Yes, the amount memory used by Slimserver is actually somewhere around
100MB (my bad!) with the somewhere around 160MB of the 1GB of total
physical memory remaining when a few programs, such as Firefox, Outlook
and Explorer are running along with Slimserver.

The external hard drives are each connected directly to an individual
USB connection on the rear of the computer. I don't know if these
individual connections are each a separate hub or if they all go
through some type of internal USB hub. Is there to map the USB
connections and devices? All the USB connections are USB 2.0.

2007-12-12 Thread Siduhe

From what others have posted before, changing the scan parameters for a
user initiated scan won't necessarily affect the on access scan which
McAfee does each time the user carries out an action.

Do you have an option called On-Access Scan Properties or Real Time
Scan Properties? This is what people have suggested in the past to
exclude files in McAfee, but I think it is for an Enterprise version:

-Open the On-Access Scan Properties dialog box, then select any of
the following icons in the left-hand pane:
Default Processes
Low-Risk Processes
High-Risk Processes
On the Detection tab, click Exclusions in the What Not to Scan area.
This will open the Set Exclusions dialog box.

The Set Exclusions dialog box lets you add or edit files, folders, or
drives.

To add an item to the list of exclusions, open the Add Exclusion Items
dialog box by clicking Add.

Type in *.myi and *.myd

Save-

Or, can you somehow change the option McAfee Real Time scanner set to
automatic?

Quite a few people have only managed to overcome their problems with
McAfee and the MySQL files by uninstalling and reinstalling McAfee -
turning it off temporarily won't work as the on-access feature remains

I will try the following things tonight and report back on the results
tomorrow.

First, I will set McAfee to only scan program files and documents since
there does not appear to be a way to configure McAfee to explicitly
exclude *.my* files.

Second, I will move the main music folder to my hard drive with

Third, I will reboot my computer.

Fourth, I will rescan my music library.

And finally, I will once again reboot my computer and report on the

Re: [slim] Large music library = slow Slimserver??

2007-12-12 Thread maggior

ralphpnj;248496 Wrote:
First of all I apologize if this topic has been dealt with before but
whenever I try to do a forum search for more than one keyword at a
time, e.g. for the phase large music library, the search feature does
not work correctly. Therefore I feel compelled to start a new thread.

 So...
 First, my setup:

I'm running Slimsever version 6.5.4 on a Dell Dimension 4600 with an
Intel Pentium processor rated 2.40GHz, 1 GB of RAM and Windows XP with
 service pack 2.

My music library consists of four external USB hard drives: two 320GB
drives, one 500GB drive and one 1TB drive. The main music folder is on
one of the 320GB drives with shortcuts pointing to the other three
drives. I do not use iTunes.

The format for my music library is rather simple and consists of a
separate folder for each album with multi-disc albums treated as one
entry. Each external hard drive has a main music folder with subfolders
for jazz, rock, classical, etc. Within each of these subfolders is
where I place each separate album folder. The vast majority of the music
is stored as either flac or ape files.

My libray stats are approximately 3500 albums, 2500 artists and 93,000
 songs.

I am currently using two Squeezeboxes and one Transporter, all
connected to my server wirelessly via a Linksys router. The server (my
PC) is wired to the Linksys router.

I had virtually the same setup down the the model of Dell PC! I have 2
squeezeboxes. My hard discs are internal though - no external USB
drives.

My library is about half the size of yours and is LAME mp3.

Originally I was using Windows XP SP2 to run slimserver. I experienced
sluggishnes in the UI and the library scan would take a long time (~30
min. if I recall correctly). I would experience things where I'd press
a button and 3 seconds later it would respond. Then it would behave
correctly.

The UI issues were infrequent enough that I was more concerned about
the library rescan issue. Since I regularly add music and perform
rescans, this was a real issue for me.

I had read in the Linux forums here that running the server on Linux
made a big difference. So, I purchased a refurb Dell from Dell for
$200. It has basically the same specs that you describe. I loaded up
Open SUSE 10.2. I haven't looked back! The UI is MUCH snappier and
consistent and my library rescans take 10min.

Another option is SlimNAS which is a packaging of SlimServer that will
run on FreeNAS. Search for FreeNAS in these forums and you will find
a link to it.

SlimNAS has the advantage of being able to run from a USB stick, so you
can experiment with it without having to install a new OS on your hard
disc.

Just some ideas to explore...

Re: [slim] Using Jiggle to stop a mac going to sleep when playing music

2007-12-12 Thread danco

:/ new to mac and new to unix so can you give slightly more idiot proof

 - Suitable text editor on the mac?

 thanks

TextWrangler is good, and free. TextEdit (which comes with the Mac) not
so good, as its default is Rich Text Format, rather than plain text;
also I forget if it will save with Unix endings. Also TextWrnagler, in
the Text Files section of the preferences has an option (it may be the
default) to use Unix line endings.

Briefly, the difference between Mac and Unix line endings used to be
that Unix used Line Feed for a new line while Mac used Carriage Return
(and, I think, Windows uses Carriage Return plus Line Feed). I have a
vague memory that recent versions of Mac OS do use Line Feed as the
default for a new line, but some older text editors still use Carriage
Reutrn.

Anyway, bottom line here is to download (Google to find it) and use
TextWrangler.

Make executable. Read and write permissions on a file can be changed by
getting information on the file, but unfortunately execute permissions
(which, in this context, means whether an alleged application can
actually be run) have to be set via the Terminal.

Terminal is an application found in the Utilities folder that provides
an interface with the Unix underpinnings of OS X.

Run terminal, and on the line that you get, type

chmod a+x

followed by a space

In Unix you would have to follow this by typing the full name of the
file you want to make executable (full name meaning the complete path
to it, going through all relevant folders). In the Mac OS, the GUI
kicks in and you don't have to type the name, instead you can just drag
the file into the terminal window and its name gets filled in for you.

So at this point you are looking at a line which (after the initial
prompt, which looks something like computername: ~username$) reads

chmod a+x fullfilename

Just press Return and the command gets run and you are back in the
prompt (you won't actually see the action, but it will be done).

If you want to investigate and see what has happened, before doing the
chmod, type ls -l followed by a space and drag the file to the window
and press Return, and do the same again after doing the chmod.

Before it will read something like
-rw-r--r-- plus other stuff,

and after it will say something like -rwxr-xr-x plus other sutff.

If you really want to know more (and it can be worthwhile) look at
either an introductory book on Unix or a book on Mac and Unix.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Skipping on playback over wired or wireless

2007-12-12 Thread icdsgnr

I actually think it has to do with my crumby linksys router. I forgot
to tell you that I was accessing the server via a laptop with a
wireless connection while the SB1 is hardwired to the router. It seems
that the problem occurs only when the web browser updates with the newly
highlighted song. If I close my IE web browser (the page does not need
to update so) I don't get the glitch. The Server has 1.5GB of RAM, CPU
running at CLK=1.5GHz athlon.

I know nothing about the internals of the SB1, but it would seem that
it wouldn't take much buffering in the box to avoid minor streaming
interuptions. For example, 2 seconds worth of 16 bits * 2 channels *
1.4MB/sec would imply a need of only ~ 90Mbits or ~ 11MB of buffer
memory. Does SB1 have any buffer memory?

Is there a way to set a delay between songs so my browser updates
before the next song is qued.

Re: [slim] Help with giving my server a static IP address

So this how I set me router to control the DHCP range, then I set the
TCP/IP properties on the PC's LAN port to assign a static IP address,
while using the router as the default gateway and DNS server.

Mark Lanctot;232120 Wrote:
Probably true, but did you get that uncompressed track to play? Until
 you compare lossless, it's supposition.

Actually when used purely as a transport, the SB3 has nothing to be
ashamed of. Its jitter numbers are extremely low. And with a secure
ripper and AccurateRip, we know for a fact that the bits coming out are
identical to those off the CD. The humble SB3 has an advantage over a
regular CD transport here - the ripping process can be done over and
over again to ensure the bits are perfect, a transport has only one
shot at it no matter how good it is.

I have actually done head-to-head on this and running the SB3 versus my
CD transport into the same DAC. The transport edges the SB3 out in air,
depth and weight. Not by much though, and given the cost of each, the
SB3 is absolutely amazing. I used several cables for SPIDF, but the
real advantage on my transport is by using the AES/EBU connection.
That may have been a factor.

I can see my future system using a server transport feeding a high end
DAC.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Skipping on playback over wired or wireless

2007-12-12 Thread icdsgnr

whoops, my math was way off. 44.1kHz sample rate * 16 bits * 2 channels
= 1.41Mbit/s. 2 seconds only requires 2.8Mbits of buffer. Your compare
link obviously implies I have ~ 1 sec of buffering for uncompressed
data. SB2 and SB3, having more than 10x that buffering, would not see
this problem. Thanks for the info. I wonder if my wireless connection
somehow momentarily steals all the bandwidth of my network, and I
wonder if there's a tweak to tone it down so the ethernet connection
gets priority.

Have you tried Jim's advice? Go to a command prompt and try the
following commands and, in each case, see what response you get:

ping 207.7.156.2

ping www.slimdevices.com

If the first version gives you responses but the second does not then
we will know it's a DNS problem. If neither gets you a response then
we know it is something else.

[slim] mildly annoying

2007-12-12 Thread mlsstl

Not that I'm in the market for any new equipment right now, but it is
somewhat annoying to periodically read about the special discounts for
the SB and Transporter that are only available to those who happen to
be close to Slim Device's headquarters. (Current holiday open house
offer for 12/14/07.)

It leaves a kind of a salt-in-the-wound feeling. No one is going to die
from it but it just has a quality about it that doesn't sit well with
the vast majority of customers who are unable to take advantage.

I recall that others in the past have expressed similar sentiments.

Perhaps a compromise would be to make the deal available to anyone who
orders on that particular day. Those who participate in the forums
would get an equal shot no matter where they live, but it still
wouldn't be opening the floodgates to the world.

Just a thought.

Re: [slim] Help with giving my server a static IP address

2007-12-12 Thread Brian Ritchie

Thanks for all the suggestions. As ever, it was a PICNIC (Problem In
Chair, Not In Computer)...

I was certain that I had the mask and gateway correct - exactly the
same values as reported by ipconfig when using DHCP. I was about to
post the results of ipconfig before and after setting a static IP.
*This* time - and yet *none* of the umpteen times I'd looked before - I
noticed that in the second half of the setup dialog, the obtain DNS
server address automatically radio button had been deselected. Not
explicitly by me, but when I chose Use the following IP address some
lines above.

Setting the DNS / alt DNS to the values reported by ipconfig /all
appears to have done the trick. No reboots required (and though the SB3
had gone blank in a huff, a simple power-button, left-arrow then
right-arrow did the trick).

Doh! You hit the nail on the head, Jim. In (admittedly weak) defence,
I argue that the Windows DNS dialog looks almost the same when the
automatic button is selected, and when it isn't, as the DNS details in
both cases are blank. And none of the instructions I found said
anything about having to set the DNS manually - not even those that
were in responses to questions about changing from dynamic to static. I
guess they thought it was obvious.

(Which begs the question: why should I? Why can't it be left as
automatic? And for an OS that delights in popping up all sorts of
irritating and pointless warnings, reminders and confirmation dialogs,
why isn't there a network settings paperclip(*) that pops up and says,
You appear to have forgotten to set a DNS address; you must really
like IP numbers...?)

For the record: the server's running Windows XP; the router is a
Linksys WRT54G; I don't see any way to associate MAC addresses to IP
addresses in its configuration, and so I assumed it had to be set on
the server itself.

And yes, when I get annoyed at something like this, it's partly because
I just *know* it's going to turn out to be my own fault, and it's really
myself I'm annoyed at...

Here's hoping that it all still works when I turn it all on again...

When you disable getting the IP address, subnet mask and gateway

Re: [slim] Slimserver Skipping on playback over wired or wireless

2007-12-12 Thread icdsgnr

Ok maybe I was delusional. The problem seems to be unrelated to my
wireless network connection controling the server ... The same problem
occurs when I run the web browser from the server directly. It is
consistant and repeatable. Sadly I cannot run the network performance
plugin as it is not compatable with the beta version 7.0. I'm
beginning to think it is an incompatibility between the new software
and SB1. My Server reports plenty of memory available, so I don't
think it is a buffering at the server problem. I thought I could get
around this by setting the delay in settings-player--audio--delay
but the setting doesn't seem to stick. With no web browser gui running
the thing works perfectly.

How do I give feedback to the folks updating the software?

[slim] How do I get podcasts out of my squeezebox library?

2007-12-12 Thread Pinball Wizard

I recently got a 160GB Ipod Classic and with the huge storage capability
decided to rerip my whole collection from FLAC to Apple Lossless so I
could just have one library for both my SB3 and iPod. The only problem
is now that I have only one file folder for both these applications all
my podcasts are now showing up on my SB3! I thought there'd be an easy
fix for this - disable every file type but apple lossless on slimserver.
And that I can do, sort of, but not completely. A quick check of my
podcasts show that the majority are mp3's, but some are in fact mpeg-4
files, just like my apple lossless music. So what do I do here? The
only other solution I could see is somehow moving my podcast folder
outside of my itunes folder, but that doesn't seem possible.

Please someone tell me this has come up before! I listen to a lot of
podcasts but don't want my geeky podcasts showing up in my really cool
music collection!!

Yes, a very good question.. http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2131.txt

After skimming the RFC a bit, I can't find anything forbidding making a
DISCOVER and grabbing the nameservers from the OFFER, without completing
the REQUEST and ACK sequence.

It would be very bad to have clients requesting an IP lease, and then
not using it from an administrative point of view.

DHCP goes like this: (log from my slimserver/dhcp server)

DHCPDISCOVER from 00:04:20:1a:01:2e via eth0
DHCPOFFER on 192.168.19.140 to 00:04:20:1a:01:2e via eth0
DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.19.140 (66.92.49.223) from 00:04:20:1a:01:2e
via eth0
DHCPACK on 192.168.19.140 to 00:04:20:1a:01:2e via eth0

So I guess it would work, but would go against the spirit of the DHCP
design.

Re: [slim] Slimserver Skipping on playback over wired or wireless

2007-12-12 Thread ModelCitizen

Just to make you all feel a bit worse.

My library is 25k tracks (all lossless) and I often run wireless for
both hops. I've never had music skipping (well, not for a few years
anyway). A scan take about 1 hour 20 minutes (and this with the
majority of the music held on USB 2 connected disks). SlimServer 6.55
runs on a 1.51ghz PIV with 1gb RAM. SlimCentre 7 on a laptop, 1.66ghz
Intel Core 2 T5500 with 2gb RAM. Both Windows XP Pro.

I am not a computer guru and would have no idea how to tune my
system.

On thing I'm sure that helps the general stability of the system is
that there are no other wirelss networks in range (and when there were
I used channel 13, which nicely distanced my network from others).

Re: [slim] Naxos radio

2007-12-12 Thread vinko

This is intended for libraries and colleges where the material can be
used for research. These organisations will get a special deal which I
believe is considerably cheaper and can therefore they can offer
listening access to their customers as part of their normal service.
The customer listens to music probably outside of their normal taste
and if they like it Naxos is likely to gain a new sale since their CD
prices are usual very reasonable or it is possible to get DRM free
downloads from some Naxos partners at around $6 a CD for 192K MP3. (ogg
used to be available, not sure if it still is.

Although this was originally intended for libraries, colleges and music
schools, Naxos Radio has grown to be very popular service among
individual music enthusiast.

The cost is USD9.95/year for 20Kbps quality and USD19.95/year for
64kpbs quality.

Naxos music tracks and albums are also available DRM free from their
online music download store ClassiscOnline (http://ClassicsOnline.com),
among others like, iTunes Store, Amazon, eMusic, etc.

Re: [slim] mildly annoying

2007-12-12 Thread bossanova808

I concur - I'd love to be able to get $500 off a transporter but it's a
long and expensive flight from Melbourne, Australia...

Perhaps there's a clever solution that can be foundespecially for
supporters and advocates from afar...
