[slim] Albumart again

2007-12-23 Thread RaK

Guys,

I have cover.jpg's in the music folders. The Album art is displayed, if
I look at a certain album in detail, but when I look at the album
overview (50 albums per page and only the albumart plus album name) I
see only the default icon (with the questionmark).

It worked already, but I was forced to reinstall slimserver again. I
already deleted the brower cache and also forced a rescan of the music
files.

any hints?

Re: [slim] Auto ratings for my songs?

2007-12-23 Thread sbutton

All power to you if you've got the time and organization to do this, but
I'm simply not that kind of person. What I was hoping for was a
starting point so that I could fix any ratings that I disagree with,
but individually rating ALL my library ?

Life's too short :)

I guess the other problem (for me) is that a song which I thought was
great three months ago, I might get fed up with now. It's difficult to
judge if a new song is a grower or a catchy tune that you will grow to
hate.

If you are satisfied with setting the same ratings on all the tracks on

Re: [slim] Fast-forward/rewind redesign

2007-12-23 Thread Phil Meyer
If there were the first rule of coding, then, I'd imagine it would be -
the code has to do something useful and purposeful, preferably what the
paying side asked for.

That's not a rule of coding - that's the role of requirements capture and
design :-)

Good that this thread was started (kudos to the idea that the client is
ultimate target of the product and keep it simple - ask them - what is
that they really want).
Yes, I agree that it is good to ask in the forum how the community want
functionality to work. However, that is not going to capture a large
proportion of the user base, and only forum readers who have a problem with the
current functionality will respond. How many users are there that don't read
the forum, and how many users actually like the current functionality? So far
there have been 8-10 replies, some of which agree that new functionality (or
the proposed removal of functionality) should be optional.

I too find the current solution rather useless,
partially because of the fact that it's not consistent - SB does not
react to the remote same way all the time; an then, pressing the play
is hit and miss.

I'm not sure what problem you have - but sounds like this is nothing to do with
FF functionality. What is not consistent? SB reacts to the remote the same
way all the time for me - what varies for you? Sounds like you have dead
batteries, if pressing play is hit and miss.

Since I have discovered song scanner, I don't think I ever used the original
way to FF.
That is a good useful plugin, but I still find the standard FF functionality
more useful, most of the time.

I think that just integrating the song scanner, so that it is easier to access
would be big step in
the right direction. Because, the only drawback to it is the fact that
it takes too many key strokes to get.

This is already possible by creating a custom key map file. You can call up
the song scanner from any chosen button (overriding FF.hold if you desire). I
have changed play.hold on the now playing screen to take me directly into the
song scanner.

I think the Song Scanner could be made a standard plugin (released and
supported with SqueezeCenter) to sit alongside the current functionality. My
vote would be for play.hold to be used to invoke the seek progress bar. The
SavePlaylist plugin currently uses play.hold to get into that plugin, but I
think Song Scanner would be a better use for the button. How often do people
want to save the playlist?

Re: [slim] Fast-forward/rewind redesign

2007-12-23 Thread Phil Meyer
How would you feel about DVR-like behavior? Press Fwd once and you jump
~30 seconds ahead (rough computation based on file size if not natively
supported format?), pres Rew once and you jump ~10 seconds back. The UI
should let users choose different Fwd and Rew jump amounts.

That would be even worse.

Perhaps even better -- momentary presses would have that DVR-like
behavior, and held presses would have Alan's proposed behavior.

The problem is the FF key will skip to next track if pressed briefly. The key
must be held down to invoke some form of fast-forward behaviour.

I don't like having to hold down the button for long periods of time. Uses the
battery power up, and would be less secure than current functionality.

I press.hold to start fast-forward, and then release the button. I press.hold
FF again to ramp-up the speed. When I hear a change in the music (eg. the end
of a long gap, crowd-noise between live songs, I press play to resume normal
playback. Nothing confusing or difficult about that, and totally practical.

I compare the current fast-forward functionality to my Sky+ box for digital TV
control, which is considered by many to be the best and most user-friendly PVR
on the market. With that box, you press . This takes you into x2 playback
speed. Press it again and you go to x5, then x15 and x30. Press play to
resume playback. Exactly the same, except the SqueezeBox remote doesn't have a
dedicated button, so you have to press FF.hold each time to go up to the next
multiplier level. I can't imagine how bad it would feel if someone took away
visual feedback from the Sky+ box and just provided a progress bar or an
arbitrary jump n seconds into the future.

I use my Squeezeboxes and a RadioShark AM/FM capture device to time
shift radio programs. Often I have to stop playing a program mid-way.
I use SongScanner to resume playback in these cases (I'd like to have
something like MythTV's saved position functionality.)

Yes, that is kind of when I use the SongScanner; if I have stopped a long
song/podcast and know what position I want to resume from. However, there is
also a bookmark plugin, that allows you to save the song and position as a
bookmark, so you can instantly resume from that position.

There would be no difference with the new proposed functionality - you would

Tend to agree with an earlier poster: need to be able to hear what you
are skipping for this to be useful. Currently I find that the lack of
responsiveness is the biggest cause of frustration but I like being
able to skip forward or backwards in a track. I agree if this is a
problem on transcoded data then drop the audio for this -but then I
only use FLAC occasionally MP3!

I would like to see current situation where each FFWD press speeds it
up, but would be nice if FRWD stepped the speed back down so could
control speed.doesn't seem to do that now.

Re: [slim] Fast-forward/rewind redesign

2007-12-23 Thread Phil Meyer
There is considerable dissatisfaction with the current implementation,
although I suspect that it probably
meets the needs of some people just fine.

Can you recap what features of the current functionality users are dissatisfied
with? Maybe there's just a lack of information on how it works and people need
some extra words in the documentation.

Are users actually saying that they don't like the sound made when
fast-forwarding, or is that just an internal thing because Logitech want to
make the software easier to understand?

Do users understand that they have to hold the FF button down?
Do users understand that they can release and hold again to go faster?
Do users understand that they have to press play to resume normal playback?

I'm trying to understand where the dissatisfaction is.

Let me start by recapping on the current functionality, as I understand
it.
From this statement it does sound like there's no written documentation. I
can't find my original user manual. I've looked in the Help-Remote Control
Reference, and all it says is Press and hold FWD to scan forward through the
current song.

Whilst that statement is not untrue, it doesn't really detail the whole
functionality. Your recap of the functionality was really good - and at least
one user replying to this thread now undertands how it is meant to work. I
suggest that as part of the rework (if anything has to be done), you also
consider writing some details into the help reference, and eventually it would
be good if Logitech release a better user manual for new products.

There is considerable doubt about whether being able to hear the 1s
chunks of audio in these modes is actually of any use.

Really? Where does the doubt come from?

I find it very useful, and I would find it useless without. Most other
playback devices have audio feedback - CD players and mp3 players. Take for
example the industry standard for mp3 playback devices - the iPod. If you
press and hold the button on an iPod, it will fast forward, playing chuncks
of audio in exactly the same way as the SqueezeBox fast-forward implementation.

Comparing to VCR/DVD/PVR devices, they all show a visual feedback when fast
forwarding through video. Video players often had two mechanisms too.
Fast-forward when playing will give a visual feedback, so you know when to stop
fast-forwarding through adverts, for example. When stopped, fast-forward would
go faster, showing a time position, so you can set playback at a particular
point in time.

The iPod also has two mechanisms for seeking through a song.
1. Press and hold to fast-forward with audio feedback.
2. Press the middle circular button to go to a song progress bar. The wheel is
then used to set a specific position within the song. The music plays at
normal speed whilst you are selecting a new playback position (whilst the user
continues to move finger around the wheel). When the user stops moving for a
second or so, playback will automatically resume at that position.

To me, this is also how the Squeezebox should work by default out of the box,
as a large user base would be most familiar with this functionality.

Your suggestion is like (1) and (2) above merged together, but in my opinion
the audio feedback is crucial for this type of seeking, otherwise it's
pointless.

The implementation (called trick-mode internally) is pretty inefficient
and somewhat hit-and-miss. Recent improvements have made it somewhat
more reliable
Seems to work flawlessly under SC7.0 beta for me, on both wireless players (SB2
and Transporter) that I have.

I used to have a FF problem on my SB3, but to be honest I had loads of problems
in general with wifi and the player rebooting, etc. It needs to go back for
repair.

The song scanner plugin in like (2) above, except that it by default it is
awkward to navigate to, and return back to the now playing screen. This could
be improved.

The implementation also has the problem that it affects many different parts
of the SC
software. It would be great to get rid of it.

True, but that's probably true for lots of other important bits of
functionality - you can't just remove something because it hasn't been
implemented well, and not replace it with something else. Eg. many people have
unreliable wifi problems, but that doesn't mean that wifi should be disabled on
all players!

Can I suggest that you try to support both seeking methods, like an iPod does:

1. Press and hold FF to fast-forward through a song, similar to your
suggestion, but with audio feedback.
2. Press and hold play to bring up a progress bar, where left/right buttons set
the current playback position. Automatically resume playback when left/right
are not pressed any more, or press play to resume.

I suggest that the above could be the new default settings, but I would also
like to see some configuration options to tweak the functionality (not sure
whether the settings would be

[slim] 2 Annoying Issues (album playback and missing track 1)

2007-12-23 Thread Inspiribomb

Hi everyone! I have two issues that are quite annoying. The first is
when I browse to an album and want to listen to the whole thing, all
the tracks are played out of order.

Secondly, it appears as though my SB3 is not finding all the songs in

What gives??? I can see the song on my HD, but the SB won't find it.

Re: [slim] 2 Annoying Issues (album playback and missing track 1)

2007-12-23 Thread Siduhe

Your first issue is caused by the fact that you are using the Browse
Music Folder option - rather than using the Album (by tag) view.
Assume you have made a conscious decision to use se .wav rather than
another lossless format which supports tags (such as FLAC, which is
what a lot of people on here use, including me)? Even if you want to
use .wav, Slimserver can guess tags from your file name and folder
structure - just enter the appropriate format in the Server settings
and Slimserver will try to build a library based on that, so you can
ditch the Browse Music Folder option.

If neither of these options work for you, the only alternative is to
rename your files so that they start with the track number rather than
title. Browse Music Folder is essentially just a hook into the way
that your OS sees the folder, so the tracks will always appear
alphabetically by file name.

There are lots of tagging products that can batch rename files to take
the pain out of this - what OS are you using?

On your second issue - are you using .cue sheets by any chance?

Also, what version of Slimserver, OS etc?

Re: [slim] 2 Annoying Issues (album playback and missing track 1)

2007-12-23 Thread Siduhe

First of all - you don't need to re-rip, promise. There are lots of
good encoders that you can point at your wavs and create a second
library of FLAC files, like the 'FLAC front end'
(http://members.home.nl/w.speek/flac.htm). See 'here'
(http://wiki.etree.org/index.php?page=FlacFrontend) for a howto. There
is also lots of good info in the wiki (see the Beginners Guide in
particular) (look up at the top of the page, although it seems to be
down just now).

For future ripping to FLAC, check out any of EAC, DBPoweramp or
Audiograbber. Again, lots of relative merits discussed in the wiki.

Your slimserver version will be shown at the bottom of the Server
Settings page - if you've got the latest stable it should be 6.5.5 I
think. There's a new release called SC7 which is being beta tested,
but that shouldn't make any difference to your immediate problem.

If your music is still out of order when you browse by album, have you
adjusted the Guess Tags setting to match your folder / naming
structure and done a full clear and rescan? Should be under Server
Settings / Formatting (I'm on SC7, but should be in the same place).

From the help file:

-Guess Tags Formats
For files that do not have reasonable tags, you can have SqueezeCenter
guess at tags using the path and filename. Using the same variables as
Title Format, you can create a pattern to match your file naming
conventions so that the application can make a good guess at what the
tags should be. Priority goes in the order listed below. The first
valid pattern match is used. -

lossless, as is wav, so there is no real benefit to re-ripping from
the source disk.

Also, my songs are still played out of order even when I browse my
music by album. Maybe switching over to FLAC will solve some of these
problems. Some input before I get going on that this morning would be
 appreciated :D

Since wav doesn't support tagging, there is no way for it to know
outside of file names what order the songs are supposed to be in.
flac DOES support tagging, including the 'track #' tag, so
SlimServer can get it right.

Re: [slim] Wife wants to get rid of squeezeboxes...

2007-12-23 Thread ds2021

I, myself, have had very poor luck with Netgear wireless routers. The
solution to constant dropouts, etc. has been to switch. I have had the
best luck with a Linksys Wireless (pre)N router. Although the SB3 is
not an N device, the stronger wireless signal put out by this type of
router has solved problems of dropouts in cold-spots around the house.

In this situation, I might find a store with a liberal return policy,
buy the pre-N router (D-link's also gets good reviews) and see if you
can solve these problems. I have had the best luck leaving the N router
on automatic settings which seems to send a wider band signal than a G
router.

The thing with the laptop is strange. I put it into hibernate as

told to restart. Then everything is fine until the next hiccup sometime
later. MP3's normally play just fine for hours on end, it's the radio
that's the hang-up. Maybe that suggests the router could be the
problem, as everything goes through that...

One thought - If you operate like I do, your laptop probably has the
Slimserver interface open in your browser all the time. It could be
that when your machine comes back on-line, in attempting to update the
page, it is pausing the player. Can you try closing the web UI before
you put the laptop to sleep? I recall experiencing something like this
with 6.5.x - I now run 7.0.0 nightlies so I can't test it out.

Re: [slim] Wife wants to get rid of squeezeboxes...

2007-12-23 Thread pablolie

The radio stations hardly draw bandwidth in a wireless setup, all things
told, and the fact that the problem arises when the laptop come son
could mean that...

- There is an IP address conflict? But if that was the case I assume
the MP3 streams would stop playing to - which they don't.

- I never use the radio feature on the SB all that much. I just nostive
that then SS loses all visibility of the SB, which I have always found
interesting. The SB obviously connects to a different host, and it goes
through your router. I would not think that does any changes tro the IP
address, though, and thus should not create an IP address conflict...

- Security issue? Not sure why the firewall rules would change when you
turn on the laptop. the only thing I could possibloy imagine is that SN
uses a TCP port, and when the laptop comes on for some reason the
router address conversion gets momentarily screwed up? But that seems a
long shot, not sure why the router would interrupt a flow or drop a
packet when adding a new entry to the address conversion table...

Just musing aloud, sorry to not be able to offer more help. For what it
is worth, I tested in in my setup (work computer woken up from
hibernation on my wireless network) and the SN runs like nothing
happened.

There would be no difference with the new proposed functionality - you

Not really. Volume up/down is instant - as soon as you start to press the

to hold the FWD button down to fast-forward, as a short press would skip to the

EAC can be slow, depending on your settings and your CD drive. Ten
minutes for a sixty minute CD would be about 6X. I often get under 4X
when doing a 'Test Copy'.

If you install AccurateRip you can usually use EAC's burst mode and get
very fast rips along with assurance that the rip is accurate.

The Flac compression should cost you almost nothing in time. In EAC
options you can safely set 'On extraction, start external
compressors...' and 'Use 1 simultaneous...'. This will launch the Flac
encoder in the background while you rip the next track.

[slim] Tracks cut off

I have a few albums of MP3s whose last few seconds are cut off when I

Any thoughts on how to fix this? I can upload one of the files if that

[slim] What cache to delete to solve libary problems?

2007-12-23 Thread JSharp

Using SlimServer 6.5.4 on Windows Vista and it's running fine. Only
real problems are with the Music Library which refuses to accept some
changes to tags, while most other changes are accepted. The choices of
Look for New and Clear and Rescan simply do not dislodge some
persistent errant entries, although those choices do correct others.
I've worked my way through tags in Mp3tag dozens of times on these
certain entries and tag data are just not the problem.

I've seen references to clearing the cache files in SlimServer, but I
can't quite figure out where the files are. In Windows Vista, there
are two paths:

Program FILES/SlimServer/server/CPAN/Cache
and
Program DATA/SlimServer/Cache under which there are four folders:
Artwork, Filecache, MySQL and Templates.

I am inclined to think the cache files to delete for rebuilding are
those under the Program DATA folder, but which of the four folders or
their subfolders do I delete?

These sound like vbr files without the usual (Xing?) header specifying

You can get better range on your WRT54G with DD-WRT.
11n may or may not help. It would help a lot if you could move to 5gHz
and leave 2.4gHz for microwave ovens, bluetooth, etc. The current issue
of PC Magazine reviews several 11n routers, and recommends against some.

The diversity antennas on some newer routers also help.

A big question is what format are your music files. The SqueezeBoxen
handle MP3 and FLAC natively, so they are sent compressed. This doesn't
impact range from an engineering view, but the compressed files can be
buffered in the SB and so very short dropouts can be played through.
Music that is sent uncompressed is very susceptible to dropouts because
of network 'issues'

Good question, but it's not going to be answered by Logitech in these

Squeezeboxes aren't likely to be made DNLA clients because of limited
memory and CPU power, but that doesn't mean future products won't go

Re: [slim] Wife wants to get rid of squeezeboxes...

2007-12-23 Thread Zaragon

Although I like the Netgear boxes, they are fairly simple to use I did
find that the two different ones that I have had were both rather poor
in terms of wireless coverage. I did notice that if I fixed the channel
rather than let it auto decide it was better.

I now have the Thompson hub branded as BT which they give out and this
has a much greater range (and some quite useful features).

If range is really a problem you could try replacing the antenna with a
higher gain item. I noticed that Maplin (UK) have some alternatives. It
will make the signal more directional though.

I don't know the NAS but I did wonder if they are going through a
browser election when you activate the laptop. I've heard of such
causing network interruptions before with full servers rather than a
NAS. How you'd stop that though I don't know.

You can also run a network performance test I recall with SB3s which
might also give you some more information.

It did cross my mind too for a split second, as I often navigate through the
now playing list to choose a song to skip to, rather than using the remote FWD
key anyway.

However, that would be a rather radical change that would catch many users out
unaware. Perhaps an option could be added to swap the key actions. There's no
reason why the FF single and hold actions can't be reversed via a custom key
map file either.

Not stupid, but I still don't like it.
I've so far never used the fwd/rew functionality, but I regularly
choose to skip a track when something bad comes up in a random
playlist. Skipping track should be easy to access.

I think the main issues here is really that the remote misses some
buttons. Most remote controls for CD and DVD players have separate
buttons for fwd/rev and next/prev track, the SB uses the same buttons
which causes the user interface to be a bit strange.

[slim] How to play ACC plus radio?

2007-12-23 Thread MarcinKG

How to play an ACCplus radio stream?
I want to play a radio stream at
http://polskastacja.pl/play/aac_koledy.pls

I'm running SS 6.5.4 on Windows XP box. I've got AlienBBC with the
latest MPlayer.

It plays fine in mplayer in command line. But, when I try to tune into
the stream using slimserver it does not play.

I have spent the whole day trying to set it up. I have even uninstalled
SS 6.5.4, and installed the new 7.0 beta and new AlienBBC, but the
result is the same. MPlayer plays it, and SS does not.

Please help,
Thanks

[slim] Happy newbie questions

2007-12-23 Thread vincoz

Dear all,

I just became a happy squeezebox owner - didn't find much of a sound
improvement over my airport express w/ jack analog out, but the rest
(access times, overall design, extensibility) is amazing. Just a few
things I couldn't find info on:

- Podcast plugin: where are the config parameters? (equivalent to
iTunes' refresh frequency and whether you want to keep older episodes
etc). Essentially I want the download to only happen at night as my bb
plan has a decent off-peak quota.

- Podcast pre-processing: my podcast sources have annoyingly differing
sound levels - the sound levelling does not seem to compensate enough,
so I was wondering if there is a way to set the replay gain in the
podcast file after it is downloaded.

- Live radio recording: would it be technically possible for a plugin
to be instructed to record a stream from the squeezebox? As in, the
program you are listening to becomes really interesting and you want to
tape it.

Thanks

Re: [slim] Happy newbie questions

2007-12-23 Thread matthijskoopmans

Welcome to the community. I hope you have as much fun with your
SqueezeBox as I have with mine.

I have attempted to answer your questions below:

Podcast plugin - there are two ways you can listen to podcasts on a
squeezebox. You can download them first, and stream them like any other
file, or you can point to the podcast feed directly in SqueezeCenter
(settings, advanced, podcasts). All podcasts still availble in the feed
can be streamed directly, without downloading them first.

Podcast pre-processeing - I guess you could do that only if you
downloaded the podcast first, but you would need a separate applicaiton
to set the gain levels per podcast. I would say that that is not worth
the effort :)

Live recording from internet radio - I doubt if it is possible from the
SqueezeCenter end. Either SqueezeCenter streams the station as a proxy,
or the SqueezeBox bypasses it and connects directly to the stream.
There may also be legal considerations with such plugin. If you really
want to record, you could hook a CD-Recorder to the digital output (I
suppose)

Cheers

Matt

Re: [slim] What cache to delete to solve libary problems?

2007-12-23 Thread Michael Herger
 Artwork, Filecache, MySQL and Templates.

I am inclined to think the cache files to delete for rebuilding are
those under the Program DATA folder, but which of the four folders or
 their subfolders do I delete?

Try the MySQL folder - although I doubt this will fix your issue. If you do a
full wipe and rescan, the tables are zapped and filled from scratch.

If you're in doubt about wrong data showing up, give a second tagger a try,
make sure mp3tag does show APE tags, too etc. These issues are almost always
due to bad tags.
