Re: [slim] squeezecenter - dissapointing

I'll also chime in that I much prefer SqueezeCenter. It's significantly
faster for me. SlimServer always left me with an unpolished feel to it
-- certain things just never seemed to always work the way I expected.
Thus far, SC has been flawless.

The advantage is that one know one can access that database from
any kind of machine and OS. Without having to install decicated
software. My experiece is that such dedicated software that one
is forced to install for various devices tend to be big, and
rather slow (because many companies do not tune their software
well, it just has to work). And normally they only make it
available on Windows systems.

Disadvantage is, as you say, speed. I am writing a controller
application (UNIX/X11) to address this issue myself, but, I
consider it is best to have a good working web-based controller

Okay, I loaded up the IR blaster plugin (from here

)at the weekend, set it to 'repeater' mode (no learning)and it worked
fine with stock IR repeaters from Xantech.
I was using an SB3 with SC7 on win xp via a wifi link. It happily
repeated signals to a Sky plus box (via a 'digisender') and a sony DVD
player.I have the type with two senders on each cable and I didn't try
the set up via a multi way connector.

It wouldn't repeat IR signals when the server pc was switched off,
which kind of makes sense really.

I would have played more but Scotland were winning at the rugby for a
change!

Re: [slim] Lost Playlists

2008-03-10 Thread pfurrie

Interesting.

I came into the forums today to ask about a similar problem (lost
playlist data), but I'm still at the same SlimServer version (6.5.4).
I added two new playlists a couple of days ago. Yesterday I went to
play one of them, and found it had no songs in it. Checked the other,
same thing.  Then went to other lists which I've used in the past;
three of the other lists are also empty, and two others have nearly all
(but not all) of the songs gone.

We haven't added any music, haven't rescanned the music files. The
data within the playlists is evaporating, and we've had this happen
other times in the past, but just dealt with it. But now I don't want
to go back and put in the tie to re-make those playlists if they're
just going to dissolve again. So, in our case, this isn't related to
any server software upgrade.

Are there any fixes for this?

Re: [slim] Why is SlimServer so slow?

2008-03-10 Thread DanielTheGreat

Phil, with all due respect, I have to disagree with your first sentence,
while agreeing with your second. When 'Track gain' is selected for
volume adjustment, SlimServer/SqueezeCenter DOES 'scale' the audio
samples, thereby destroying the integrity of the DTS code stream.
There was some discussion last year about SS being made smarter by
recognising DTS bit-streams and disabling gain adjustments for those
tracks. It was suggested that the developers would aim for this in
Rev. 7, but this clearly hasn't happened (I installed SqueezeCenter 7
yesterday and tested it today, and I still get white noise when volume
adjustment is enabled for a DTS track. Disabling volume adjustment
['none'] allows DTS FLAC files to play perfectly through the
Squeezebox's Toslink o/p).

agentsmith, the new server (SqueezeCenter) has improved speed in only
one or two respects, but is still a dog in most others. While loading
a moderate sized playlist still takes minutes, it seems to allow you to
start playing (the first track at least) before the full list has loaded
into the web interface. And converting it from sequential to shuffled
now takes only seconds before play can start.

Marc, now that SqueezeCenter is faster at shuffling (or at least
allowing you to start playing before it's finished), the need to use
Random Play is diminished. I had a look for Erland's SqlPlayList
plugin, but his download page doesn't include that plug-in. I'll have
a further look when I get more time.

Another area where SS/SC is abysmally slow, that I forgot to mention in
my original post, is (re)scanning the music library. SS was
particularly finicky about broken playlist links, so every time I
added, deleted or renamed tracks, I needed to rescan the library. This
takes well over half an hour, during which I must suffer in silence :-(
I'm hoping SC won't be so touchy about broken links, and will just do
what any intelligent s/w does, and skip the 'missing' track.

Which brings me to a related question. I create my own playlists
outside of SS/SC, using a batch file and a few programs I've written
(takes ~24 seconds to create the 'everything' playlist and then derive
the artist and other playlists from it). I don't understand why SC
needs to 'scan' anything. Why couldn't I just navigate to a ready-made
playlist and say 'play this', and off it goes (just like Spider or other
players)?
Perhaps I'm missing something, and SS/SC was created for a completely
different purpose from what I expect it to do (just play my music,
anytime, without delay). I guess what I want is Spider Player with a
Squeezebox driver! :-)
I must say it's been a great disappointment to me that SS/SC doesn't
handle external playlists well - SS wouldn't even display artist/title
information from an extended M3U playlist! I've yet to test SC for
this. Playlists seem such a powerful/flexible way to organise and
manage what you want to hear. And if SC handled them properly, I
wouldn't have to bother editing my 15,000 tracks to add artist/title
tags - a task I don't look forward to!
Daniel

Re: [slim] Incorrect time displayed

Same here - looks like the server software needs a patch for this - most
Linux variants and other operating systems can handle this change
appropriately based on the local timezone settings so there's no real
reason why the QNAP shouldn't be able to do this correctly too.

It's very annoying, to say the least! I tend to use the clock on my
squeezebox quite a lot since it's generally a lot more accurate than
any of the other clocks around the house, as it syncs regularly with a
network timeserver.

upgrade? The install of SqueezeCenter asked for -- and was given --
the path to the playlists directory. Surprised the upgrade couldn't
have passed that info to it. Regardless, a bunch of lists which took
quite a while to make now appear to be toast. I have backups of this
drive, so could get the data that was in that directory, but don't know
if it can be assimilated into the new version of software.

What's the deal?

Re: [slim] Wireless roaming with the Receiver

2008-03-10 Thread El Callado

JimC;277698 Wrote:
Squeezebox Controller can't yet roam across access points.

Mine does. It's a little sluggish, but if I'm standing next to one WAP,
the SNR on the wireless status display is in the 50-60 range. I then go
into the room with the other WAP, and the SNR drops below 10. But after
a while, the BSSID changes and the SNR is back above 50. The IP address
is the same. It seems to need a keypress to make the transition.

I think Sean's comment may be applicable to an SBR that has only
wireless connectivity.

Since the Controller is capable of roaming, the only question is
whether the Receiver can act as a roaming WAP. I may test this myself
later today.

[slim] Squeezebox Wireless problems

2008-03-10 Thread vetinry

Good afternoon all.

I've been running a SB2 in my bedroom wirelessly for well over a year
with no problems.

Last night there was the mother of all storms here in the south of the
UK and now I can't get my wireless connection to work.

Last week I upgraded to Squeeze Centre 7.0 and also installed Alien BBC
but everything has been running fine until last night so I think that is
probably co-incidence.

I've taken the SB2 into the office and it connects OK if I use an
ethernet cable but I just can't get the wireless working.

I've tried switching off the network security etc but all to no avail.

Does anyone else have any experience of this - is there something else
I could try or is my SB2 toast?

Best wishes

Steve

QNAP and daylight time saving is fixable, you simply need to modify the
startup script. See my post:

I think this is due to the fact that Slimserver on the Qnap is run from
a bootstrap environment that has its own timezone.

I've tried running Slimserver from a QNap 201 NAS, with the music on

Specifically, the initial scan can be slow, and that is exactly when
folks who have just unboxed their Duet, plugged it in, installed

A few hours later, when the scan is done, the performance is

Re: [slim] Inconsistent scanning of the music library

2008-03-10 Thread EliteAV

Further to my previous post, I can confirm that even with Music Library
compilation settings set to: Group Compilations Albums Together and
List Albums By Band, the only way of getting compilation albums in SC
7.0 to appear under Various Artists is to set the Compilation tag=1 for
each track (in my case WMA file) using a tag editor like Tag Rename.

As I have been using SlimServer for a couple of years and have not
previously had to do this with my music collection, it does tend to
reinforce the view that the way that compilation albums (or
specifically any albums where the Album Artist=Various Artists) has
changed between SS 6.5.x and SC 7.0.

And I found another strange problem :
I've many Chinese albums, when I select Clear and re-scan, I can see
those Chines chars, ex, Home - Albums, during the scan (and they are
random sort order). but when the scan finished, only
1 2 3 4 5 7 8 ? A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P R S T U V W Y Z
are seen, click Home - Artists, the Chinese chars are all gone.

If you go to the bottom of the SBC main menu there's an option to
select the player to control. That list will contain any SB devices
connected to your SC server. If you have players which aren't showing

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter 7.0 extremely slow

2008-03-10 Thread jbhuffer

I've got the same problem here. The SB3 player interface is too slow to
even use and will sometimes freeze. I then have to unplug and replug
the SB3.

However when the player is actually playing something its totally fine,
its only when its gone idle/screensaving that it slows.

The web interface for SC7 is very quick and snappy. No problems there.
It a fresh install on a new headless server I just built. Windows XP
OS. I'm running SC7 as a Service, not as an app.

I thought it may be some plugins that I recently added that were
screwing with it so I've tried uninstalling most of them. No change in
response.

I hope I can get this one figured out, I really like the new SC7!

The problem was definitely in the player interface with SC7. It started
after I paused a song very close to the end of the track. From there on
the whole thing slowed to a crawl. The SqueezeCenter web interface
still functioned well, and I was able to control the player from my
computer with no problem. I finally solved the problem by doing a full,
clean, reinstallation of SC7. Simply reinstalling it without dumping all
the old files didn't fix the problem. To do this I had to trash the SC7
prefPane in the OSX Library folder. I also had to dump all vestiges of
any older Slimserver files, including install logs. I then went into
the system folder and dumped some items that appeared associated with
either SC7 or Slimserver 6.x.
There seemed to be associated files in the Cache, Syndication,
Preference, and Safari folders, all of which I dumped. After doing
this and reinstalling SC7, I was able to get back to the sign in page
for SC7 and start from scratch. Now everything works again. Is there
any documentation available the tells how to do a complete uninstall
for MacOSX?

Daniel - I think we are actually agreeing!
My point was that SS/SC doesn't corrupt DTS files - replaygain does
the corrupting. I agree that making replaygain DTS aware would be
neat. All I was saying was that any media player that has replaygain
functionality would cause the same problem.

The obvious solution of course is to fix the problem by disabling
replaygain or setting the replaygain tags to 0db (not sure that works
but worth a try)

I'm running SlimServer 6.5.4, so things might be different for me, but
I have no problem playing back DTS files with ReplayGain enabled (with
the smart setting, which I believe uses track or album based on
the current track's relation to the rest of the playlist). None of my
DTS files have ReplayGain information embedded in them, so there's
nothing for SlimServer to do -- I would have thought that it wouldn't
adjust the audio at all if there were no RG tags.

Some simple things to check (which you may have already tried):

1. Check that there are no ReplayGain values set for your DTS files. I
use foobar2000: I can ask for a track's properties and, on the
Properties tab (as opposed to Metadata) I can see RG values. fb2k
can clear RG values too.

2. Check that the Digital Volume Control setting is fixed (or
similar; I don't remember the exact setting name and it may have
changed for SC).

3. Check that there's no bitrate limiting enabled.

If you can play DTS back with RG disabled, I imagine the last two are
okay, but check anyway. Perhaps things have changed between SS 6.5.4
and SS 7, but I can't see why the server would apply RG with no RG tags
set.

[slim] Squeezecenter album art formatting issue

Anyone else seeing this album art formatting problem with Squeezecenter
(see attached screenshot)?

I'm running the release version of 7.0 and the default skin on a Gentoo
Linux machine. If I set the interface to hide artwork, it still leaves
one large artwork placeholder showing. I assume that the right-hand
artwork placeholders should be the same size as the ones one the left
hand side.

I wanted to check for any obvious lapse on my part before filing a bug
report, so thanks for any help in advance.

[slim] Duet Controller Scrolling Problem

2008-03-10 Thread jcowling

As I scroll through my artists list, when I get to the Ts, the
controller stops responding for a while. It then seems to catch up
to the Ts or the Us, but scrolling is erratic. It seems like it gets
lost if the the scrolling goes too far too fast. Also, I try to go
backwards from the As to get to the end of the alphabet and sometimes
it works and sometimes it does not.

Has anyone else had this problem?

It is also a pain when you navigate back to pick another artist and the
list goes back to the As. This combined with the scrolling issue makes
switching from Tom Waits to Uncle Tupelo or to Wilco much more
difficult that it was with the original Squeezebox remote.

Re: [slim] Lost Playlists

2008-03-10 Thread Siduhe

First question (apologies if this is a bit grandmother sucking eggs)
have you done both a full clear and rescan and a playlist only rescan?
Assume yes, and that neither has brought back the playlists? Also
assume these are user created playlists, and haven't been imported from
Itunes or MusicIP or similar?

All a playlist is a collection of links to music files in a text
document, so one possible issue can be when Squeezecenter sees the
link differently from the way it sees the music library.

For example, if your playlists are d:/Music/Mysong.mp3 and your music
library is //Music/Mysong.mp3 then the playlists won't show up. Open
up one of the playlists in a text editor like EditPad and check the
file paths are the same. The most likely cause is that they aren't, so
a good one to rule out at the start. If this is your problem, it's easy
to do a find and replace in the text file to match your Music Library
setting and then the playlists will work again.

Are there any clues in the scanner.log (esp when you do the playlist
only rescan) what do the error messages say?

Finally, you mention you're on an NAS (but you don't say which one or
what OS you are running). Does the squeezecenter user have appropriate
read/write access to the playlist files - it is a different user from
the old slimserver user which may be why you are running into problems?

Normally these devices are run wireless, but if you can run wired it's
better. So the wireless is really for LAN access to SC.

However if you run wired, the receiver can act as a stripped-down AP
which the SBC can talk to, so you don't need a wireless network, the
SBC can talk to the receiver and from there to SC.

I've also had problems with Softsqueeze 3.4 after my SC 7.0 upgrade. It
always works perfectly when playing from my music folder (flacs or

and down but no audio...Sometimes it kicks in several minutes later,
generally not. Or it might work as usual for a day or two, then the
audio will vanish mysteriously, and just as mysteriously return... It's
hit and miss - yesterday it was working on my office pc, today only one
brief period of audible internet radio, but flacs are streaming
perfectly. Not PC specific, I have the same problem at home and work
(same versions of xp, sc, and softsqueeze on both boxes). My Squeezebox
will always play stations when softsqueeze drops out, so not an SN

I reinstalled Custom Scan plug-in and it still worked fine. I then
tried to install the Lazy Search plug-in and it bombed again.

So I started the cycle again. Removed plug-ins, re-installed sqzctr,
installed all plug-ins other than Custom Scan(even lazy search)and all
is well again.

So, I guess I wont be installing Custom Scan again. Just wondering if
this is a known issue with this plug-in and sqzctr 7.0?

How did you reach this conclusion given that you wired your SBRs?

I had read the CNET review
(http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-media-receivers/logitech-squeezebox-duet/4505-6739_7-32815168.html),
which states:
Logitech recommends not exceeding six to eight Squeezebox nodes
(Controllers and Receivers total), after which the bandwidth
constraints are likely to overwhelm most home networks.

I assumed this was due to the limitation of a single Squeezecenter
server managing that many nodes, versus a solely wifi limitation. I'm
sure YMMV due to server size, network traffic, etc. Perhaps someone
from Logitech Engineering can comment.
