I'm not a "computer guy", so I follow the sheep using McAfee. I have
some kind of malware or something right now that I believe was picked
along with Vista SP1 update just a few days ago. When I click on a
search result, I am redirected. Also, many web pages are loaded kind
of scrambled. I use Internet Explorer...once again, the sheep thing.

Anyhow, if McAfee doesn't help fix it, I'll have to read up on the
one's mentioned in the poll.

Re: [slim] bye squeeze, hello ipod

2008-07-15 Thread mortslim

The AppleTV has a digital audio out.

It does shut down, at least I get the impression that the hard drive
has gone to sleep because its initial startup after not being used for
awhile is always a couple of seconds, whereas while in use the feedback
from the remote is instantaneous. I understand that the hard drive has
to spin up just like in a computer hard drive that has gone to sleep
while in power saving mode.

Be careful about reviews. The AppleTV has gone through several
firmware updates since initial release and you need to make sure you
are looking at a recent review. Older reviews won't help you because
they were based upon out of date firmwares.

I have the AppleTV and my review is that it works great. No complaints
at all. It does what it says it does, and no configuration issues. It
works with my computer, it works standalone, it works with my iPod
Touch.

It looks great on my HDTV, it sounds great on my stereo system.

It is easy to control the AppleTV with the included remote.

Now that my iPod Touch (or iPhone) includes the new "remote"
application, it is even better. Don't need the TV on or even connected
to choose what music to listen to.

As far as Logitech's response to this, I have seen wishlists on this
forum that have mentioned a squeezebox with built-in harddrive. That
would be a serious competitor. Thus no need for your computer to be
on, no need for the configuration issues of an NAS. That is what
AppleTV gives you. That is what Logitech may need to meet this
challenge.

And to take this even further, with the continual fall in price of
laptops, e.g. the Asus Eee PC, you could just hook up a laptop
directly to your stereo system and use an iPod Touch to control your
music and other services. There is an evolution occurring that is
blurring the lines in the conjunction of a standalone music device and
an all-purpose computer.

I am sure Logitech is not standing still and is taking note of these
developments.

My own observation is that if Logitech wants to break out of the
hobbyist niche and into the mainstream, it has to focus on ease of use.
That means eliminate the need for configuration issues, just make it
work right out of the box (of course it can keep this option for
advanced users). Anything that makes it hard to use a product builds
in resistance to its adoption for the general consumer. This is where
Apple excels. It has its own ecosystem of hardware and software that
talks to each other flawlessly and easily.

You may be better with an Apple TV. Better sonics than an airport
express when using a DAC but it is prone to getting hot and some
reviewers and users have complained about the fact that it never truly
shuts down unless you pull the cord from the back. Now that the duet
can be used as a handset, I would wonder (though do not know) whether
you might be able to control the Apple TV without needing the screen on
which was always a serious problem for me.

The fact that Apple can do something that is as good as this, means
that there is the possibility of Logitech doing something that is close
to being as good but with Squeezebox flexibility in the next Duet
iteration.

And the beat goes on:

LastFM has now been added as a service on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Logitech, the parent of Slim Devices, sells several models of ipod
docking speaker systems. They sound great for your ipod. I use their
Pure-Fi system in addition to my Squeezebox. So Logitech has hedged
its bets here. It wins either way.

Re: [slim] Missing controller menu items

get SC from here:
http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/7.1/

then after SC restart, your controller when it connects (and I guess in
your case it will be "if it connects") SC will tell the controller about
the 7.1 code to upgrade to.

caveat: I'm really not sure 7.1 will fix it, because the problem you
describe hasn't been widely reported in 7.0.1. But...7.1, while beta,
should be fairly stable, so IMO it can't hurt.

Just to clarify, if you press and hold the "back" key on the controller,
do you then see a menu item that says "Choose Player"? If so, when
entering Choose Player do you see your SB3 in the list? If so, does
selecting it result again in the "endless spinny"?

If you can provide it, can you post the full revision details for both
your controller (Settings->Advanced->About) and for your SqueezeCenter

Re: [slim] Missing controller menu items

2008-07-15 Thread bklaas

Can you access your music library from the webUI? That is,
http://squeezecenter.ip.address:9000
(replace squeezecenter.ip.address with the ip of your squeezecenter)

On the controller, what do you see when you enter Settings->Music
Source? Anything?

7.0.1 *should* work, but since you're stuck, I might suggest giving 7.1
a try. The problem you are describing makes me think that something is
amiss with your controller's connection to SC, and that has been
reworked quite a bit in 7.1. Note: after upgrading to 7.1 SC and
restarting, a new firmware will be pushed to your controller as well
(that's a good thing).

hope that helps,

Yeah very similar, but not exactly the same thing. Is there any way
this could be implemented on a non-touch screen like the Duet

IMO the silver ones sound better - the black ones are, er, darker.

I guess this differs by country. When I bought my SB3 I also wanted to
order a spare backlit remote. Logitech Netherlands were not able to
help nor were they willing to put any effort to it (I suggested that
they could facilitate ordering through SlimDevices site (don't deliver
to europe) for which I was willing to pay but this didn't seem
possible).

Finally found a store in the netherlands who could deliver me one :-)

Logitech, as one of the few companies, also don't have any means to
file complaints (at least not through their website). The effort of
SlimDevices is amazing though judging from the forum. In my case JimC
was offered to take my complaint and forward it to the right person/

Don't get me wrong I really like the Logitech products but I certainly
hope none of my Logitech products get broken.

2008-07-15 Thread lrossouw

What I would love is music player with Squeezebox type screen/interface
(or better) in my car (with a built in library). Once I get home it
would realise that it is at home and automatically use wifi or other
means to sync with my music library and with whatever playlist I tell
it to, shuffling the music if the playlist is larger than the storage
on the device. I would imagine it would replace the regular Radio/CD
player and should at least have regular radio too.

Re: [slim] Any Update on Multiple Server Instanaces on Single PC

2008-07-15 Thread pigbite

Of course it's no problem to ask why - sorry, I should have made it
clearer in the original posting.

I am a custom installer and I have a client with four x SB3 and one
server with a single library on it (controlled via Crestron
incidentally). They have been very happy with everything but now want
to split the libraries into four distinct entities so that each family
member can sync their iPods into their owne library via iTunes. There
is a solution for managing the multiple iTunes libs on a single machine
- all I need is a solution for SqueezeCenter so each SB can connect to a
different library.

I was not aware of the multiple library plug-in so I will take a look
at that and see what it offers.

Many thanks,

Jez

Yep. It's actually the very best way to browse longs lists one can
imagine.
But then most of the SC web skins have this, too (Default, Nokia,
iPeng,...)
The usability in browsing lists on the iPhone is hard to beat.
However, if it comes to things like switching tracks/changing
volume/things like that the touch screen comes at a cost: you always
need to disable the screen saver first and look at the screen. No blind
switching as with the "old" iPods or the SBC.

Not really helpful, but may I ask why? If the purpose is to use four

[slim] Any Update on Multiple Server Instanaces on Single PC

2008-07-15 Thread pigbite

Hi,

running multiple server instances on single PC. There is an old wiki
item relating to making it work on Linux boxes
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/RunningMultipleSlimServers) but
I would like to know if there is any more recent information relating
to making it happen on a PC running Windows XP.

I've had a trawl through the forums and can't find anything other than
it might be a future enhancement to SqueezeCenter but am hoping someone
might have some more info.

At the end of the day I need to have four SqueezeBoxes playing from 4
different libs all held on a single machine.

Hopefully someone will have some more info!

Thanks in advance,

Jez

Hi,

Here are the few things I tried lately:

perfect
- ran the recommended uninstall procedure (which I hadn't done the
first time)
- reinstalled SC7.0.1 ==> the cracks still appear
> decoded a flac to wav ==> the wav creates many more cracks, pops
and whizzs of all sorts
> converted a whole album from flac to mp3 (using flac2mp3 which
converts to mp3 using lame in VBR by default) ==> plays beautifully

I therefore tend to think that the amount of data to process plays a
certain role in my problem.

The only potential culprit I see is that I only have 2M of free mem
(excluding swap)

Again, any help apreciated!

Re: [slim] Waking up to Radio 4

2008-07-15 Thread Siduhe

I have a specific playlist with the Radio 4 url in it - so just play
Radio 4, in the web interface select Save Playlist (bottom right), call
it Radio 4, and then select that new playlist as the alarm playlist
option.

Use current playlist should work though - although do you do an
overnight rescan of your library at all? This may wipe the now playing
playlist, depending on what version of SC you are using.

Also, there was a 'bug'
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=8606) which affected radio
playlists and the alarm functionality (just in Windows I think?) in SC
7.1 which is now fixed.

You have to save the playlist first. Give it a name like 'radio4'. Then
you can select that name in teh Alarm settings.

Note that you won't be woken up when radio 4 or your internet connection
is down.

That's the reason I don't use this option. I wish SD would fall back to
a beep in such situations.

I think there should be another option on the Now Playing Track menu
(the one you get when you press the middle button while highlighting a
track in the Now Playing list) labelled "Play Next". It should move the
selected track to directly below the currently playing track. I added
similar functionality to my Salling Clicker script.

OK I know this is me but can anybody tell me how to get my squeezebox to
wake me up with radio 4? I understand the basic alarm options and Im
guessing the problem is something to do with "current playlist" if I
have been listening to Radio 4 the night before and use Sleep to turn
the machine off is Radio 4 still on my current playlist the next day or
is there something different i need to do. Sorry if this is blindingly
obvious...

Yes I am using an SB3 and yes I looked under settings for the SB3
player but IRBlaster does not appear as a menu option.

IRBlaster settings are player-centric.
You'll find them in Settings>Players>IR-Blaster.

I can see "IRBlaster" under the list of plug-ins - I just can't see and

The receiver picks up the volume up/down from the controller and
instead of changing its own volume (which would be fixed) it would send
out IR commands to the amplifier to change volume.

Re: [slim] feature request: file vs track calculator

2008-07-15 Thread MrSinatra

ok, so here's my first screenshot. this one uses the following strings
in "Guess Tag Formats" to get these stats:

/ARTIST/ALBUM/ARTIST - TRACKNUM - TITLE
and
/ARTIST/ALBUM/ALBUM - TRACKNUM - ARTIST - TITLE

the other three strings are the default and i left them as 3,4 and 5, i
think they do nothing for me. later when i can do a full clear and
rescan i'll post my stats without my custom strings above, (ie. using
the defaults)

in my screenshot, notice the following:

"dos" window says i have 23693 files that are wavs or mp3s. i assume
it is correct.

the album art summary window agrees.

however the stats window disagrees, adding one song, and one album to
the total the album art summary window has.

very interestingly, that "error" seemingly persists in the music scan
details as well.

also, the album art summary window says i have 2662 artists, while the
stats window claims i have 686.

i assume thats due to some VA issues, (altho currently all my albums
have "Various Artists" or some value in the TPE2 field)

in any case, these are confusing inconsistentcies and no way to pin
down from whence they came.

the problem gets a lot worse when i only have the defaults in the guess
tag formats fields. when i have time, i'll post that SS too. the
defaults are i believe the following:

(ARTIST - ALBUM) TRACKNUM - TITLE
/ARTIST/ALBUM/TRACKNUM TITLE
/ARTIST/ALBUM/TRACKNUM. TITLE

so unless anyone says different, those are the three values i'll run on
my next test.

Re: [slim] logitech support issues

2008-07-15 Thread ModelCitizen

Your experience with Logitech support is very different from mine.

I needed a new Transporter backlit remote. At the time there was not
one for sale anywhere. Logitch support bent over backwards to find me
one, finally finding sourcing it in the States (as it was discovered
that European bought Transporters were never supplied with backlit
remotes). Logitech support even rang me on my mobile to work out a
solution (UK from Switzerland).

I have to say I was deeply impressed.

I agree, the offered solution is a total ballsache, and they need to
get their act together. To save the hassle, you can get a power
adapter clip here:

Re: [slim] logitech support issues

I posted this in an unrelated thread, but it's probably best posted
here...

I've had similar problems with Logitech support in the UK.

I phoned them yesterday to report the new SB Controller I'd purchased
from the Logitech website arrived without the UK adapter for the power
supply.

The guy I spoke to was actually based in Holland (even though I dialled
a UK telephone number) and I got the impression he had no idea what a
Squeezebox Controller actually was.

I've been promised a call back later today by a supervisor as it
appears the adapter isn't a stocked spare part. Looks like I've got to
ship everything back to Germany for a replacement.

Not impressed with the Logitech European support team.
