Hi Pippin,

the command that has worked for me for some time is:
aoss /usr/local/bin/squeezeslave --signal --oldplayer --volume sw -r3
-s -m 01:01:01:01:01:0a mythtv

where mythtv is the server name where squeezecenter resides

this requires alsa-oss installed (I don't recall installing anything

My recollection is that line level input sensitivities around the 100mV

and tape decks output fairly modest voltage levels. It was only when CD
players arrived on the scene in the 80s that outputs of 1V and 2V became
commonplace.

Phil Leigh;359661 Wrote:
Surely this can't be right - you need at least 2V for modern gear and

10V was the minimum overload capability you'd expect from a decent
input with 100mV sensitivity. For a 2V input, 10V is only a little over
12dB of headroom, which is hardly adequate.

[slim] Freezing, slow response - how I resolved it

2008-11-14 Thread poyntzj

OK, I have read around the forums looking into why SB3 boxes seem to
freeze, tried numerous things to get it working and then when all that
failed, what I tried - and at the moment, what has worked for me,
though drastic.

In a nutshell - rebuild your machine from scratch, patch fully and then
reinstall SC - I use 7.2.1

I had a SB3 giving problems - this was a wireless one, but an older SB3
wired only was running fine - and that is over 14Mbps homeplug.
I tried the wireless SB3 over the same homeplug network, a direct
connection and it still failed. I tried the resets, the Xilinix chip
resets, changing the firmware down to the version that came with SC 6.5
and it still failed
Connecting to the SN was fine for hours, and indeed any network test
and it was fine.
I then decided it was dead and purchased as SB-Boom. this had EXACTLY
the same problems - every thing is good until you are playing music.
I tried another WAP, changing channels, security, changing speeds to be
onl b, then g then back to mixed etc

I then dug out my old HTPC and installed SC 7.2.1 onto that and ALL my
units played OK. I then started to add the same software that was on
my exising box and it all worked until I added IIS. Ah, removing and
it worked, readding and it failed. Went to my old server and removed
IIS, and it still failed.
At this point I decided to do a complete rebuild of my old HTPC,
repatched it with all the patches, reinstalled SC7.21, Alien BBC, then
the other software I used (TVersity, IIS, POPFile, VPOP3 and FileZilla
server).
Everything was still running fine. It still is even after this months
patches from MS.

On the old box I tried everything - new drivers, new nic, resetting the
IP stack, winsock etc and it still never worked. At that stage I gave
up and just rebuilt that machine (which now works fine).

the thing that has really thrown me here is the fact that my wired SB3
has never had a problem and the wireless units also failed when
connected by wire so I assumed the problem was with the SB3 itself.
Only when I got the boom did I really consider the server - it had kind
of crossed my mind as a last resort option, but I was really convinced
it was OK

Cheers

[slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-14 Thread idowantapickle

Hi folks,

EMCC Software are pleased to announce the immediate availability of
Squidgy for iPhone and iPod Touch from the Apple app store. Price is
£4.99 - direct link is
http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=296245115mt=8

Feature List:
Automatic Server Detection
Multiple player support
Player controls - shuffle / repeat /sleep / volume / power
Music library browsing
Artwork display
Landscape album view
Search
Playlist manipulation ( add , reorder, delete )
Internet Music services browsing
Wikipedia integration

Usage notes:
On first startup use the detect server button in the settings screen to
automatically configure Squidgy to use your SqueezeCenter. Squidgy
scans your server and builds a local database of album titles, artist
names and album thumbnails to allow speedy browsing of your music
library. This scan can take a couple of minutes depending on the size
of your library.

Once the scan completes you can browse or search your library. The
playlist lives on the back of the Now playing screen. To reorder the
playlist just drag and drop items. You can delete one or more items
from here too.

Player controls live on the now playing screen too. Just tap the album
art and they slide in from the top. Set your volume / shuffle / repeat
preferences or turn off the current player. To hide the player controls
again just tap outside the player control area.

In album view rotate the phone left to see the album grid view. Scroll
left to right, or pick an album to see the track list. Tap outside the
album area to return to the grid view.

Use the players option on the main menu to change your current player.

Wikipedia takes you straight to the wikipedia page for the currently
playing artist.

You can also customise a few aspects of Squidgy. If you don't like the
default white on grey you can change to more standard iphone colours in
the settings menu. You can also configure the default behaviour when
clicking on an album here.

Theres some screenshots here:

Enjoy

That's ease of change.
Not ease of use.

It's also not necessarily true, but usually a sign of bad design decisions.

The SC plugin interface is a good example of a bad design. The API
constantly changes and plugins fail regularly after a minor SC update.
Very annoying. API's should be stable.

[slim] Wireless signal drops to 0

2008-11-14 Thread liffy99

I've run a wireless signal strength chack on both of my SB3s and the
signal generally sits between 55 and 75%. However, every few seconds
(not entirely periodic) the strength drops to 0 for a second or so,
then returns to normal. I don't lose the connection (although one SB3
seems to be unable to reconnect if I've not used it for a day or two
without me re-setting the wireless router - it just won't connect to a
wireless network).

I've run Netstumbler on the PC to check the Philips router and the
Speed column shows 54mps, but again, drops to 0 every few seconds.
I'm not really sure how to interpret Netstumbler so I'm not sure what
the speed clumn actually shows (I would be surprised if the 54mps was
actual speed).

Is this normal ?

I ask as a handful of FLAC files seem to stutter on playback and the
kitchen SB3 (see above) often refuses to reconnect.

Thanks

 1. No there is no Xwindows GUI on VortexBox it’s all done through the
web interface. I may add one if people are interested.

 2. If you connect to it with a browser you get a minimal interface and
 the SC interface.

 3. It’s Linux so it should run on almost any PC hardware from the past

 4. I have the FLAC and MP3 files shared by default on read only shares.
That way the kids don’t delete my files. There is also a writable share
if you want or add or edit files or if you want to use VortexBox as a
 general file server.

 5. I’m pulling the tags from CDDB I have almost 200 CDs on my VortexBox
so far and the data seems good. Of course some people will still want to
 edit them.

 6. Yes a rescan is auto-started after every rip.

 7. Fedora is RPM based. You can use yum to update. For example “yum
update SqueezeCenter” from command line would update to the latest
 version.

 8. Yes VortexBox comes preloaded with 7.2.1

I have been trying to figure out the best way to add plugins. I could
have a web interface that adds them. Or I could just include a bunch of
 popular ones.

Donation button! Good idea I guess I could get a few bucks for my work.
Although I think I’m like most of you and I do this for enjoyment :)

I've had an old 766/1 GB box sitting in my office waiting for me to set
it up as a stand-alone, always-on Squeeze server. I'm willing to give it
some testing from the perspective of a Linux newbie. I'll load up some
of my CD's, copy some of my existing library, and generally kick the
tires if you'd like, but as a warning my testing time is limited at
the moment with completing construction in my basement for Thanksgiving
(an extra guest room bath) though I should make that dead line (
I'm the one who'll be dead idf I miss it ;)

judgement. I'm most interested in seeing what its like performance-wise
and how well it handles updates as a result of normal interaction with

Also interested to see you've taken the approach of using an alert
sheet to display play now, play next buttons. I took this approach to
begin with but developed a new hold to queue gesture, with a normal

Re: [slim] Wireless signal drops to 0

2008-11-14 Thread toby10

liffy99;359900 Wrote:

 Thanks

NetStumbler may be simply giving the max rating speed of that 54mps
network, it may not be giving the actual speed. But I'm not sure.

Using NetStumbler see what channels are showing as strong signals near
you. Your WiFi may be competing with another near by network for the
same channel. Channels are 1 to 11, 6 being the most popular as the
mfgr default channel. Just changing your channel to a different
non-competing channel can solve many WiFi issues and even give you a
signal boost, usually changing to ch 1 or ch 11 works best.

I like the alert sheet least.

The alert sheet method always seemed inadequate. It required tapping on
a disclosure button to pop it up and it was far to easy to miss and
actually tap the whole row, thus destroying the entire playlist.

I would say this, but touch and hold works really nicely. You just
hold the row for a second and it will flash to indicate its been added.
The downside is that its not immediately obvious, but then neither is
the swipe to delete gesture unless you know about it. Once you do know,
it seems quite intuitive.

My recollection is that line level input sensitivities around the 100mV
mark was quite common back in the 70s. Most devices such as FM tuners
and tape decks output fairly modest voltage levels. It was only when CD
players arrived on the scene in the 80s that outputs of 1V and 2V became
 commonplace.

10V was the minimum overload capability you'd expect from a decent
input with 100mV sensitivity. For a 2V input, 10V is only a little over
12dB of headroom, which is hardly adequate.

hmmm - yes I meant 150 not 250.
Many preamps with split-rail supplies use +/-12v so max swing is
(theoretically) 24 v pk-pk...

I think that these days most line inputs are set to 500mV sensitivity,
with a proper CD input being at 2V.

Anyway, 187mV is too low for a CD or squeezebox. It will need an
attenuator in-line to avoid overloading the input stage IMHO, depending
on its gain staging and overload margin (headroom).

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-14 Thread danny041

Ok, bought it and tried it. Just so you don't think I am posting as a
bought fanboi or anything for the app or for some of the other apps
competing: I am not.

First impression. Easy to set up, with autosearch it finds the player
and you are alive and kickin in a couple of minutes after the app has
scanned your library.

The interface works really quick and it is actually a Major difference
compared to iPeng's web-interface. For me, this is The Major Thing for
using a 3rd party remote like the iphone. I think this is the case for
most of us out there longing for the iphone to be utilized as the best
remote imaginable for the squeezebox.

With this said, and expected from my side, I don't really like the Now
playing interface. First of all i don't like that the controls and
elapsed time is constantly there. My personal view is that the more
similar you can make it to the Itunes interface, the more natural and
user friendly it would be to use the app. My intuitive approach is
trying to sweep the cover to left or right to get to different menues
and trying to tap the screen to invoke/remove the control buttons etc.
Now neither of this works, rather i have to push the playlist or tap
the screen to get a rather not so useful menu as a pop-down. I also
would like to be able to forward/rewind on the time-progress-bar for
the song in the same way i can increase/decrease the volume by dragging
the volume bar left/right.

I would also like the multiplayer approach to be improved. As far as i
understand this function is not available? I would like to check the
squeezeboxes i want to see simultaneously controls for. (if i for
example have 5 SB's i would like to be able to check/uncheck some of
them to have control over the ones i choose simultaneously). Actually,
when looking around i don't find any setting for synchronizing players
at all, but i have only used the program for 15 mins now so don't take
my points as some kind of 100% accurate judgement.

This was my initial thoughts after short usage of the program. The more
i think of it, the more two points pop up as the most important onces.
Quick navigation and response, which this app is doing great so far.
The other thing is quick and easy support for navigating/synchronizing
multiple squeezeboxes. So far I don't see/understand how this is done
in this app.

you know that screen protector is just fo shipping right? You are
meant to take it off :)

I would be surprised if you couldn't find large sheets of generic
screen protector that you could cut with a craft knife. I have never
seen custom ones for an SB3, as it isn't designed to be a portable
device, there isn't really a need for this.

I really hope this would be the case. Development could be fairly quick
for this as well as it is a spec bump as opposed to a new product.

The SB3 is a testament to well designed hardware. Three and a half
years so far with a redesign and then a few tweeks to the case is
pretty exceptional for consumer electronics these days.

I agree. However, most people compare data-transfer speed by looking at
the differences between USB, Firewire, SCSI, SATA etc. without looking
at the drive's sustained transfer-rate specs. You might need a whole
bunch of disks in raid config to fill up the controller bandwidth. The
only significance of this for SB/SC is when making a back-up of the
music. During regular use of the products, any interface will do.

Nick.

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-14 Thread socistep

Hi All,

Just quick from me as I have to shoot to the girlfriends place and I'm
late :-) I probably haven't looked at all the functionality

Music scan

Takes a bit of time but not too bad, I noticed from the first scan that
some of my most recent added albums weren't there but Squidgy popped up
with a message saying it was out of date and they came up on a re-scan,
a minor irritant

Browsing

There is a slight lag in loading album artwork but generally it is
quick and the artwork looks good

Main Menu

I like this, gives all the options in a similar set-up to the
controller, its great to see some of the iPhone features being able to
be used on a SB set-up such as the scrolling and use of touch keyboard
on a search.

-Albums
Not so sure on the horizontal album view, looks very cluttered to me
and I would stick to the vertical view, however I do like clicking on
the album and the tracks coming up similar to how the iPod works. Not
sure why this doesn't do this on the vertical view ?
-Artists
Seems to be some differences to the SB set-up in terms of Various
Artists being under 'V' as opposed to the top and also if an artist is
in a compilation that album is included under the artist, would be good
to configure that
- Internet Audio
Looks good, haven't really had much of a play but noticed that there
isn't an entry for my favourites

Now Playing/Playlist

I actually like this and the way it looks, I like the way that
playlists can be viewed and managed and this IMO is easier then on the
controller

Summary

From first impression its looks good and is the kind of app I was
hoping we would get for the iPhone, I will be interested to see how it
compares to the other 2 and will no doubt purchase all 3 then make a
final decision - As I mentioned I've only had a quick look and haven't
tried it over a longer period so will send some further thoughts
through.

Best go, the Dog is getting ready to eat my tea...

Cheers
Ian

work, so as long as the server returns the same format data for

Having said that, I wouldn't purchase the app solely for Rhapsody

2008-11-14 Thread pippin

OK, a little late with today's image, so I'll do a few :-)
I DID plan top only give you the splash screen, yet...

Actually I found out a few annoying things today:

#1 I can design slick Apps, I can even make them look cool, but I
obviously CANNOT design icons, So if anybody has a cool suggestion out
there :-)

#2 is even worse: iPeng is ready for the App store, It's done, it has
all the help stuff set up, I even have marketing blabla, but I cannot
get it compiled for the AppStore? Why? My company name has an ! in it
and the code signing doesn't eat that. I am not allowed to change the
registered entity myself so now I've got Apple headquarters tying to
sort out what to do :-(
Not kidding.
Note to self - only ever use ASCII characters. Wait a moment, that IS
an ASCII character... hm... A-Z?

But ok, here's the pictures. I admit that the Squwhatever app has some
cooler looks to it but ours doesn't crash on startup :-)

Is it only on certain file types? If so, what file type?

Are you using analog or digital out?

What format is your library?
Is ReplayGain being used?
Are you syncing?
Any transcoding being used?
What OS are you using?

So did you disable WAV-FLAC transcoding? Are your WAVs 24-bit? Is it
this new 7.3 bug? http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=10012

Re: [slim] Squidgy for iPhone now available in Apple App Store

2008-11-14 Thread idowantapickle

Some settings to check if you are having problems are tucked away under
'Advanced' in the server settings screen.

It appears that some of the NAS builds use a different HTTP port by
default, so please check this and the CLI port if you are having
problems connecting.

If you have problems scanning, try setting the 'charset' value to utf8
and see if that helps. This shouldn't be needed on recent 7.3 server
builds.

Support email address is squidgy AT emccsoft DOT com, please email
problems to us as well as posting them here, then we can track them
better.

Hmm, OK, can you try MP3 or Internet Radio or something and see if you
still have the problem?

Could this be a firewall or port issue? I've been told that the

missed this earlier - this was indeed the problem, added a port
exception in windows firewall and database is now being constructed.
thanks very much for the help, very much looking forward to giving this
a try!
