[slim] Blank display on SB3 when not connected to music source

2008-11-23 Thread kidstypike

I don't use any of my Squeezeboxen as an alarm.
I don't use SqueezeNetwork.
I leave all my Squeezeboxen powered up when I shut down my PC.

When SqueezeCenter is shut down my SBB displays the time.
When SqueezeCenter is shut down my SB3 displays a blank screen.

Is this a firmware difference, or is there a setting somewhere to make
the SB3 display something when powered up, but not connected to
SqueezeCenter?

(This is not a 'Brightness when off' problem).

Many thanks

Re: [slim] Server delay when browsing folders

2008-11-23 Thread erland

Those errors are probably due to:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9423

It's caused by a database that has been upgraded since 6.5 through
7.0.0 to a current release. The easiest way to fix them without
upgrading to 7.3 is:

1. Shutdown SqueezeCenter
2. Delete the Cache directory
3. Startup SqueezeCenter and perform a full rescan

NOTE
The above sequence will result in that all your TrackStat statistics
are lost, so make sure you have a working TrackStat backup which you
can restore afterwards. I'm not sure you will be able to create a
working backup when the installation is in the current state, so make
really sure you have a backup file with contents and not just an empty
one.

By the way, I don't think those errors have anything to do with the
performance issues but I'm not completely sure. However, the errors
will result in that most menus in the TrackStat plugin doesn't work
correctly.

This is a firmware hardware difference so the SBB can act as alarm

There's even a small battery inside which will power a backup clock

AFAIR the SBB has some sound samples in the firmware for this purpose

I have 2 controllers and 1 iPhone and have been on the beta test for
iSqueeze (Squeemote).

To be honest I have been frustrated with the controllers, the wifi
reception is poor and they always seem to lose their connection to the
server. Also I find the wheel inferior to using the touchscreen.

Using my iPhone is a real joy, it's quick responsive and squeemote (and
I guess iPeng) is designed like the iPod player so is real easy to use.

Somethings are missing from Squeemote such as a random playlist option,
access to LastFM but I believe Luke has added (is adding?) these to the
final release. The application is also prone to crashing occasionally
but it doesn't take long to reload.

For me if those prices are correct it is a no brainer, the iTouch (or
iPhone) is definitely the way to go.

There have been hot discussions (search the forums) about this topic.
Some folks want to power down the SC/WLAN-Router/Network and expect
that this will switch the display off, too. Other folks want permanent

You should even find some bug reports supporting the one or the other

[slim] Settings | Advanced | File Types Settings | Player | Audio?

2008-11-23 Thread AndrewFG

How does Settings | Advanced | File Types work?
And does Settings | Player | Audio have any impact on it?

If I understand it correctly, SqueezeCenter can convert any given input
file type on the fly to three or four different other stream formats
before sending it to the player concerned ??

If so, what are the parameters of e.g. client PC, O/S, SqeezeCenter,
LAN type, LAN speed, player type etc. that determine which actual
stream format is sent?

All of my music files are in Apple MP4 (file extension .M4A) and 99% of
them are are encoded using Apple Lossless. Is this what you call alac?
The File Types page allows conversion of Apple Lossless to FLAC, MP3 or
WAV. I suppose the best stream type for my files is FLAC? Or is it WAV?
And are there any circumstances why I would want SqueezeCenter to
convert to any other format than the best? Is it safer to disable all
but the best formats?

Presently my players are a Transporter and a Duet. Perhaps, in future
-- when the feature finally becomes available -- I may also play music
over SoftSqueeze/SqueezePlay or the audio outputs on the Duet
controller...

This leads to my next question: does Settings | Player | Audio have any
impact on how Settings | Advanced | File Types works? Do any of the
player specific crossfade, clock, bitrate limiting, LAME quality level,
volume adjustment, replay gain, settings have any impact on the stream
format that SqueezeCenter sends? And what happens when I have two
(different type) players synchronized to the same music?

Finally are there any plans for Transporter and Duet to handle Apple
Lossless natively in firmware, and thus eliminate all this trancoding
entirely?

likely to always be with you, but for a multi-person household
having a 'traditional' remote like the Controller laying around to
be picked up and used is extremely convenient.

I spent a large chunk of time listening yesterday while working on
some computer issues, with both my iPhone and Controller next to me.
Every time, it was more convenient to pick up the Controller to make
a quick change to what was playing - fast forward, check the song
title etc.

My two cents.

Re: [slim] Settings | Advanced | File Types Settings | Player | Audio?

2008-11-23 Thread Phil Leigh

Andrew - that's a mega-question!
I'll make a start:
1) Slim can't support Apple natively because Apple is a proprietory
format - sorry but AFAIK that will never happen, thanks to Apple.
2) Your player settings are independent of each other - even when
synced.
3) You should set ALAC to stream as FLAC for minimum impact on your
network.
4) Some features (eg replaygain) don't work if streaming WAV instead of
FLAC/MP3
5) if you specific no limit in the limit bitrate box, then it will
stream FLAC or WAV - not sure how it chooses which if both are enabled.
If you set limiting, it will stream as MP3 instead (unless youhave
disabled this option in file settings)

6) LAME quality level is about degree of compression vs. CPU load not
sound quality - leave it set on 9
7) not sure if crossfade works with WAV? - maybe FLAC/MP3 only
8) some people need to stream as MP3 for marginal wi-fi setups or for
streaming across the net.

CD's (normal ones - aka redbook CD's) replay at 44.1kHz sample rate
with 16-bit bitdepth. This is often shortened to 16/44.1 or
44.1/16).

So when you rip a CD it will create files on your PC at that resolution

[slim] Can't see players in Squeezecenter

2008-11-23 Thread b33k34

I've got three boxen and all are working and connected to my server - i
can play music via the remotes. However, none are showing up in
Squeezecenter - the players tab is blank.

I've just updated my install to the latest 7.2.1 release but it hasn't
fixed it. I think this started when i changed the fixed IP address of
my iMac (which i use to run the server). I set up each of the players
again via the remote to cope with the 'new' server location but that is
probably when they stopped showing up in the web interface.

So - running 7.2.1 on Mac OSX Leopard.

help!

Indeed, looking at this somewhat objective the controller is better.
The iPod Touch I use does have more gadget-impact because it can do so

My advise would be to get both! oh... and the iTouch apps must have a

Re: [slim] Settings | Advanced | File Types Settings | Player | Audio?

2008-11-23 Thread JJZolx

AndrewFG;362755 Wrote:
How does Settings | Advanced | File Types work?
And does Settings | Player | Audio have any impact on it?

They're related. First comes the File Types settings, which is
universal and mostly tells SqueezeCenter what it is permitted to do as
far as streaming and transcoding are concerned. Its only practical
function, as I see it, is to permit the user to disable streaming in
some particular format. Since Flac is normally the default format use,
then this in turn means it's only really useful for forcing streaming in
WAV.

If so, what are the parameters of e.g. client PC, O/S, SqeezeCenter, LAN
type, LAN speed, player type etc. that determine which actual stream
 format is sent?

OS (and the software expected to be installed on that OS) determines
which conversions might be found on the File Types page.

The actual streaming format is determined by that, the player type, and
the bitrate limiting setting on the player's Audio setting page.

With lossless file formats, newer (Squeezebox2 and later) players will
normally use Flac for streaming. Older players, which aren't capable
of decoding Flac in their firmware, will be sent a WAV stream.

All of my music files are in Apple MP4 (file extension .M4A) and 99% of
them are are encoded using Apple Lossless. Is this what you call
 alac?

Yes and no. Apple Lossless is often referred to as ALAC. But on the
File Types page, at least on my Windows system, the file format is
shown as Apple Lossless and the decoder alac refers to the alac.exe
program that is used to decode the format.

The File Types page allows conversion of Apple Lossless to FLAC, MP3 or
WAV. I suppose the best stream type for my files is FLAC? Or is it WAV?

You shouldn't have to worry about it, as the best format will
automaticlaly be chosen. But see the next answer, below.

And are there any circumstances why I would want SqueezeCenter to
convert to any other format than the best?

Two that I can think of. One practical, the other fairly controversial
and argued in other threads.

If you have wireless network issues, you might want to set bitrate
limiting just to get wireless streaming to work. This is particular
the case for older players that must be streamed WAV over a slower
802.11b network and that have small buffers, making dropouts much more
common than with newer players.

The other reason is debatable, but I'll mention it, and hope the thread
doesn't go off on a tangent. Some audiophiles claim that WAV sounds
better than Flac (and some claim Flac sounds better than WAV, so it
goes both ways). This shouldn't be the case, as Flac is lossless and
will decode to exactly the same bits and bytes. Theories on why this
might be the case generally speculate that the greater CPU activity
needed to decode the Flac stream has a negative audible effect.
Conversely, speculation as to why Flac might sound better than WAV is
that the CPU and network electronics actually do less work handling the
lower network traffic.

They sound exactly the same to me.

Is it safer to disable all but the best formats?

Can't hurt anything, but it's no safer.

Disabling, say, Mp3 streaming for ALAC, won't accomplish anything if
you don't have bitrate limiting set. I stream from my home
SqueezeCenter to my work computer running Squeezeslave, with a library
in Flac. The only practical way to do that is to set bitrate limiting
and stream in Mp3. But that only affects that one player, and the
others are streamed in Flac.

This leads to my next question: does Settings | Player | Audio have any
impact on how Settings | Advanced | File Types works?

Do any of the player specific crossfade, clock, bitrate limiting, LAME
quality level, volume adjustment, replay gain, settings have any impact
on the stream format that SqueezeCenter sends?

Just bitrate limiting. Setting it to anything other than 'No Limit'
will mean transcoding to Mp3.

And what happens when I have two (different type) players synchronized
 to the same music?

You won't have to worry about it unless you have a pre-SB2 player
synched to a newer one. All the newer players have the same decoding
capabilities in their firmware.

That's incorrect. It isn't a compression level, but a separate quality
level. This is a LAME setting, so it's only used when bitrate limiting
is set. It would be nice if related options like this in the SC server
settings could be grayed out or hidden when another makes it moot.

According to the LAME documentaion:

Code:

  Noise shaping psycho acoustic algorithms:
  -q argarg = 0...9. Default -q 5
-q 0: Highest quality, very slow
-q 9: Poor quality, but fast
  -h Same as -q 2. Recommended.
-f Same as -q 7. Fast, ok quality

By default it's set at -q 9 in SC, I suppose, just to be safe, but I
see very little difference in CPU usage on the server when set to -q 2.
Using -q 0 on my server does show a bit more CPU.

Anyway... only relevant when bitrate limiting is forcing transcoding to
Mp3. Most people only use this for remote streaming to a player off of
their home network.

If you're in the US, I have one suggestion before you toss the powerline
stuff. US houses are frequently wired with two phases (two different 110
supplies, to keep it simple). Outlets throughout the house (and often in

signals reputedly don't always cross phases readily, and so adapters on
different phases can be nonfunctional. If your server side adapter is
plugged into a circuit on a different phases from the one in the attic,
you could have problems. The suggestion, is try the server side adapter
in a different wall plug. It may or may not make a difference.

Plan B suggestion - there are do-it-yourself signal boosters, that take
about 5 minutes and require ZERO technical capability. We're talking
glue, aluminum foil and paper or cardboard. Google, you'll find many
choices. I did this and the improvement was shocking. Alternatively,
you could try buying new antennas for your router. Boosting the signal
is a way to get the result without disturbing the status quo (if you
choose to get a new router or repeater).

The multiple phase thing is for most homes in the developed countries
and for sure in western Europe (up to 3 phases in most houses). I still
don't understand why they don't market a device that'll bridge across
them all but I think it's because of safety and regulations (like
you're not supposed to open the box with the 3-phase busbars).

The home-made antenna-reflectors work very good but the best start
would be a good n type router (has MIMO technology) which works for
g clients too.

Better how? If you get no interruptions in playback then one is as

At the player end Flac is decoded to WAV/PCM.

The trancoding doesn't alter the bits at all - nothing is lost. In any
case, it can't hurt to try it streamed as WAV instead of Flac. If you
connect using wired ethernet it will make very little difference in
reliability due to bandwidth issues. If you use wireless and get
dropouts, go back to streaming in Flac.

I am a designer of VERY large scale computer systems, and I'm more than
happy to state that lossless audio computer software doesn't behave like
analogue electronics! :o). There is no direct equivalent of transfer
loss or generation loss.

There is no sound processing, just lossless audio data processing.
This has been definitely proven many, many times. If you compare the
bits from the CD to what comes out - no matter what lossless chain is
in the way - the bits are the same.

Given an accurate rip and lossless data transmission to the DAC, the
audiophile paranoia really starts at the DAC and everything beyond.
everything upstream of the Squeezebox is irrelevant to sound quality,
given the above caveats.

I purchased this app and I like it. It seems to work pretty well. I've
got a large library (3200 albums).

Everytime I select Favorites the app crashes and returns to the ipod
touch home screen. Restart app and try again and same result?

Hope you can keep the fixes and improvements coming at a good clip.
Definitely need Podcast access.

Thanks.

[slim] Extended Text Display Separators

2008-11-23 Thread dtz

If I enter multiple artists in the Artist field in the song tag, the
Transporter's Extended Text Display seems to ignore the separators or
to rearrange the order of the artists. I.e. Van Cliburn; Fritz Reiner;
CSO in the Artist field are displayed in the Extended Text Display
with ampersands instead of semicolons and out of order as CSOVan
CliburnFritz Reiner. If the artists are entered with commas, the
display shows the correct order but no comma. The same goes for
hyphens. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? I spent quite a bit
of time searching the archives and checking out various SqueezeCenter
options but no luck. I must beg for help. Thanks

This has been definitely proven many, many times. If you compare the
bits from the CD to what comes out - no matter what lossless chain is
in the way - the bits are the same.

Don't get me wrong. I don't dispute that lossless is lossless. The word
lossless is a definition of meaning and it simply CANNOT be
disputed...

I am not talking about theory, I am talking about practice. I am simply
stating that, in real world systems, as you insert more processing
stuff onto a lossless chain, you will eventually reach a level where
things start to go pear shaped, and eventually the chain fails. e.g.
the CPU can't handle the processing load, and has to drop or reschedule
stuff in order to keep up; or the network has to drop packets.

Even with your VERY large scale computer systems, I bet that it is
eventually quite possible to add enough overhead to the system, to
bring it down. C'mon you know this yourself :-)

And when things like this do happen, the lossless chain becomes
transformed into something that starts to look an awful lot like
lossy, where the only question is whether it becomes a total loss
(the system freezes or crashes), a partial loss (dropped bits or
packets), or a time loss (the data gets through eventually, but not in
real time).

[slim] SB3 owners: Weird Logfile Entries (Errors) in SC Log...?

2008-11-23 Thread pablolie

I had been observing issues with erratic SC performance, and no issues
where apparent whatsoever. One weird thing is the following, persistent
entry in the logfile, which happens every 20-something minutes...

 .. [08-11-23 09:20:28.9819]
Slim::Networking::SqueezeNetwork::PrefSync::_syncDown_error (359) Sync
Down failed: No such player: 00:04:20:07:80:98, will retry in 1620 ..

The interesting thing is that this happens to be the only SB3 in
operation in my house right now, the 2 Booms and the 1 Duet currently
connected to my network do not report this. Have the new products
introduced an odd incompatibility with the SB3? I did reinstall SC from
scratch and reinstalled the latest FW on the SB3, just to see if these
entries would go away. But they haven't. But at least overall system
performance is now up to the former standard.

I am curious whether other SB3 owners in this forum see the same synch
errors in their log files?

 Ben

It's called a browser window. Could be chrome or Safari as well.

If I had made up my mind about what it is causing the issue I would not
be asking. But there are elements that can be easily eliminated as part
of the equation. When 4 Squeeze devices can run network test at
4-5Mbit/s at the same time, it is clear the wireless network is not an
issue. MY wireless network has always been rock solid, and it is easy
to test for that with other tools. As to windows itself, there are also
perfroamnce and system tests one can run. When every other application
and system test and performance test runs flawlessly, the issues can be
narowed to another area - and everything indicated Squeezecenter.

The fact that I have not seen the performance issues since
re-installing SC 7.2 from scratch (something I was trying to avoid for
the usual reasons of inconvenience, as it wipes out several
preferences) seems to indicate my suspicion was right. However, now we
shall never know what exactly caused it within SC.

I mentionedc in my last entry that I observe a re-ocurring synch error
in the log file with the one SB3 in my current setup. I wonder whether
an accumulation of those over time (a week or two) starts to affect
system performance. I have opened a bug with all the information I have
been able to gather.

music would stream to the living room SB3. These two had been
previously synched, but the synch relationship had been turned off, and
yet I could not get the Duet to play music via the browser interface -
it would go to a different player. Obviosuly some pointers in SC where
very confused, so it's no wonder there were major lags.

It looks like it's SqueezeNetwork (not SC) that is reporting 'no such
player.' Maybe you just need to connect that player to SqueezeNetwork
once?

in solving the issue. It was a simple yes/no question as to whether
someone else was observing the behavior. I have had my SBs since early
2006 and am pretty versed in troubleshooting, and in assessing when it

It is part of the culture in these forums to initially hold on to the

And that as a rule is not very helpful when it is indeed a SC issue.
Which on occasion exist.

In any case, I filed a bug report for the aspects of this that I could

Re: [slim] Controller or alternative (iPod touch/iPhone)?

2008-11-23 Thread Steve Agnew

I'm finding the iPod Touchscreen perfect for browsing through albums
artists.

If you had a small music library then the scroll wheel on the SBC would
be OK but it is unusable with a large collection - we went back to the
standard remote with it's number/alpha keys just because of this.
Having an alphabet scrollbar on the iPod touchscreen makes this very
easy to use.

The horizontal album cover display on the iPod looks OK but it doesn't
have an alphabet scrollbar so it is hard to navigate.

I think the combination of the standard remote (long battery life,
one-click for most functions) and an iPod Touch remote (easy
navigation, searching, visual display) is pretty compelling. I have two
controllers but I can't see them getting much use.

Regards, Steve.

this is really something that would make the final killer app for the

Re: [slim] Delay between two synchronized SB's

2008-11-23 Thread soaringeagle

Some more information,

- Restarting SqueezeCenter also seems to bring all devices back into
sync again (in addition to cycling the units). When I previously said
that this didn't help, I wasn't shutting down SqueezeCenter properly.
- I am running SqueezeCenter inside of a virtual machine. So, I suspect
it has something to do with time drift of that virtual machine.
- Think that it is only getting out of sync if I have not used my
computer for a while. BTW, virtual machine is always on and running at
the highest priority i.e. it has not gone into standby.
- Offset seems to be pretty consistent at around 3.4 seconds and seems
to be impacting one box more than others e.g. this morning when I woke
up, two units were in sync and another was running ahead of those two
units. So, they're not all out of sync.

Understand that this setup is probably non compliant. Therefore, if
someone has a summary of how synchronization works, I should be able to
narrow down the problem.

Thanks

Well... I am confident you have it but it's invisible, you have just
the regular UK 1-phase outlets in the house. But the cable coming into
the house will most probably be 3-phase and enter a box that has 3
busbars, one for each phase. You will probably have multiple 16A
breakers and if you have more than a couple, they will be spread over
the 3 phases. So yes, you could make a true 3-phase power by running
extension cords from different outlets in the house and just using the
hot-wires from each. I shouldn't have told this... don't play with it
if you're not sure what you are doing.

Also, many homes in the UK will have electric stoves, ovens or
waterheaters that use 3-phase power. When you call the electrician for
making an outlet for them, he will open the box to the three busbars
and pull the wiring from it, no need to dig up the cable...

The reason they do the 3-phase is that the neighborhood-transformers
are 3-phase and they want to balance the load not just over the
neighborhood but within each house.

cheers,
Nick.

[slim] Storage Solution

2008-11-23 Thread vamythguy
The Rig:

All of my music is ripped to a 3x250GB/1x300GBSATA RAID-5 (ubuntu mdadm)
array in a box with an amd64 3800 and 1G of RAM. The box was running along
just fine until (I think this is what happened) the water pump on the water
cooler died. The machine heated-up and shut down to avoid burning out. I
ordered a zalman fan (the water cooler pulled way too much power) and
another gig of RAM (why not? in addition to slim, this box had been a
full-blown media server in the past and just might be again).

The Problem:

After installing the fan and the memory, the machine refuses to boot. There
is no video, the post code indicates it's booting, but the HD and CD/DVD
just keep cycling. I have tried just about every combo of stripped down
mobo I can but nothing (other than the cycling drives). My music remains
orphaned.

The Opportunity(?):

I have every reason to believe the music is safe, if unaccesible. But I
don't know what is wrong. So I'm considering a new setup that would
hopefully - keep price down by reusing componnents (memory, drives (i've got
other large sata drives) and cpu), allow me to recover my music and provide
fast (enough) network accessible storage that is expandable (ala LVM),
redundant (ala raid) and external (ala eSATA, USB, firewire, AoE an
enclosure - whatever). This machine would run slimcenter and mysql (and
possibly some other network services) unless it makes more sense to just
pull all that off to a seperate big/bad cpu/memory only box. or maybe I'm
crazy. I just know I'd like to move to a box whose sole providence is
providing lots of safe, fast (enough) storage using as many parts as I
already have and doing so it such that my music isn't lost (I've had issues
moving raid arrays from one box to another, or even one distro to another on
the same hardware).

Hopefully this isn't too OT or too 'we've all already done that - next.

[slim] Enhancement idea for the controller!

2008-11-23 Thread DeVerm

Hi all,

before entering an enhancement request on the bugtracker, I would like
to hear your thoughts on this;

I hear many complaints about the rotary dial when your library is
really big. If have trouble too, not getting to the right letter (it
takes some time but less than selecting first letter like on SC web
interface), but overshooting it.

My idea is to add a wiggle function to the rotary dial. If you wiggle
instead of rotate, it changes mode to show the alphabet to select the
first letter of the album/artist, followed by press middle button to
get to that part of the list. This wiggle-detect should be made
fool-proof enough to be not activated when just scrolling up and down a
bit... like three quick fwd-rev wiggles or something.

What do you think?

cheers,
Nick.

my main problem to scroll through long lists with

I think some settings to control the acceleration

Sure, that's what I wrote (overshoot). But if you make the acceleration
smoother, it'll take longer. I think it will accelerate less when you
dial a little slower, but I'm not sure. It might be made better though,
I agree, but I would still want the wiggle mode to get to halfway parts
of the list instead of turning like crazy for 20 secs, even if I don't
need to reverse after overshooting it!

cheers,

[slim] Is there a way to clear menu list positions?

2008-11-23 Thread tonyptony

I've been setting up my learning remote for various things, and I got
around to the task of having a marco automatically start up my SB3 and
other stereo equipment each morning to my desired 'net station. I've
already had the SB3 remote learned into mine for quite some time, so
that's no problem.

The problem is that if the SB3 is used during the day, the LEFT and
DOWN pre-programmed sequence in my macro may not work because it is
expecting all menu selection lists to be clean - that is, not in any
last used position. Is there a way to clear all menu lists so that
when I scroll into them they all start at Position 1?

I wouldn't mind just adding in an alphabet list. Whenever I select

button twice would start the list at the top as it does now.
Selecting K would take you somewhere near the middle of the list, from
where you can move up to J or down to L by scrolling through the albums.

The wiggling stuff sounds a bit to unpredictable to me.

Re: [slim] SB2 wireless bridge?

2008-11-23 Thread radish

DHCP can be flaky with bridging, and it's usually the fault of the DHCP
server - I've had all sorts of trouble with it in the past. Basically
the server is getting confused as to why there are two devices asking
for IPs from what looks to it like the same place. If the server was
implemented properly it should work, but your best bet is probably to
just use a static IP.

Maybe, but it really shouldn't cause any problems. Give it another go

As far as I know, three phase residential supply is quite uncommon in

would be done. It would seem unnecessary and so an avoidable cost and
effort.

It is not completely implausible that a Dutchman floating up and down

By default, it listens to the local loopback adress (127.0.0.1). On my

It doesn't hurt to be explicit about the IP address, but it isn't

The frame comes from the bridge, because that's the device which is
actually connected to the switch or AP, and it has to be that way so
the server knows where to send the response. The DHCP spec has a way of
dealing with that (the server should use the MAC from a field inside the
message, not where the message appears to be coming from) but I've seen
servers get confused by that and do it wrong. Google dhcp wireless
bridge and you'll see a bunch of posts about it with various routers.

I have 1 SB3, 3 Booms and 2 Duets. One of my Duets is paired with a

I tried to play some music this afternoon, and I could select from my

1-2 seconds of the music, then make a scratching noise, then play
another second, then make a scratching noise.

I suspected the wireless signal - checked it from the Controller - it
shows solid 100%. I also tried playing the other Duet in the house -
works fine. Lastly, I tried rebooting the Duet Receiver and reset the
T-Amp. Same problem.

What should I look at next - thanks in advance for your input.

Re: [slim] Settings | Advanced | File Types Settings | Player | Audio?

(the system freezes or crashes), a partial loss (dropped bits or
packets), or a time loss (the data gets through eventually, but not in
 real time).

Andrew,

We are talking about two different things. I'm talking about lossless
in the sense that no data is discarded or altered in the software chain
so that what is presented to the DAC is what was in the original
source. This has been proven in practice (not theory) by using HDCD or
DTS material which simply won't work properly if the bits are altered.

Yes, the software stack might be so deep that the CPU struggles and the
systems slows to an unusable crawl. I say that's not lossy - it's
broken. The music will eventually stutter and stop.

The ethernet protocols ensure network retransmission of lost/corrupt
packets containing many bytes (individual bits themselves can't be
dropped as that is not a unit that the computer deals in at an
access/transport level). The buffer in the SB is quite big and will
cater for a lot of packet retransmission for wi-fi purposes - again
though, if the buffer empties prematurely or fails to fill this is
broken, not lossy.

Finally, there is nothing real-time about any of this (unlike a CD
player). The entire process is asynchronous. Timing issues can only
begin to arise downstream of the SB (e.g jitter).

I replied to your OP because I thought you were concerned that the
software path length might affect sound quality and I've tried to
explain that it doesn't. That is completely different to saying that
running too much software on the server PC might bring the system to
it's knees performance-wise.
Regards
Phil

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann
JISCO/UPCI - TACT 2.2X (Linear PSU) + Good Vibrations S/W - MF
Triplethreat(Audiocom full mods)- Linn 5103 - Aktiv 5.1 system (6x
LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend Supertweeters,
Kimber Chord cables
Outdoors: Boombox+Creative Sub (If I remember to turn it on...)

Flac was designed to be asymmetric on the processing load for
compression and decompression. You compress a given tune once, and play
it back lots of times, so flac takes a lot longer to compress, and is
fast to expand. It can be expanded real time on slow processors, such as
the one in a SB2

That is why the gods made buffers.

And the reality and impact of jitter is still open to argument. For
them, go to the audiophiles section.

And if one checks the third party and unix forums, you will find that
nearly any PC made in this century is fast enough to be a SqueezeCenter
server.

Re: [slim] SC7 not support file name with double-byte character?

2008-11-23 Thread mmc

I have a similar problem. my music files are stored on an Airlink NAS
(a saamba server) with UTF8 support. I could see chinese and japanese
characters correctly from windows, but these are not displayed
correctly in SC7,2,1.
would like to find out how to fix.

thanks, mmc

I've been setting up my learning remote for various things, and I got

You should teach it the press-and-hold-number action. Then assign your station
to one of the buttons. No need to emulate key presses to navigate the menus.

For the SB3 in my bedroom I just have the display turn off when it's not
playing music. That will solve your problem.

Thanks for the hint, I already did this. The problem is that when the
display is turned off... I can't read the time on the SB3 in the middle
of the night :).

Yeah, I know that problem. I bought a cheap green Ikea alarm clock with
big LCD digits (which helps cause I'm -4). It has a big button on top
which lights the LCD for about 5 seconds. I don't use the alarm
function; that's what the SB3 is for.
