That's right, but I'm afraid I'd only be guessing as well. I think
you'd enter "m3u" under "Disabled Audio File Extensions", which should
keep the scanner from reading the m3u files when it scans your music
folder.

That's as long as you have a playlist folder designated that is
separate from the music folder. If your playlist folder is the same
as, or within your music folder then I believe the playlist scan would
pick them up regardless. You could also add "m3u" to "Disabled
Playlist File Extensions", but it would probably interfere with your
ability to save and play playlists within SqueezeCenter.

Re: [slim] SB track progress bar remains blank

2009-01-25 Thread netwerx1

I'm having a simular issue, all of a sudden my progress bar won't
display, and neither will the "time remaining"...when I cycle through
the "Now Playing" displays, those two just don't do anything. It worked
earlier in the day, and I did an update to 7.3.2...I don't know if the
issue started at that time for sure though.

I've uninstalled and re-installed Squeezecenter, reverted back to
7.3.1, and have done a complete config wipe to try and get the
functionality back, but nothing has worked yet. Would be interested to
know about others who have had this issue...

Yes, vinyl is making a comeback and thus phono inputs are getting more
popular. In addition to high gain, a phonograph input has heavy
equalization (the RIAA equalization curve) for use with 33 and 45
records. (78s are a separate topic)

seanadams wrote:

Oh, that's an excellent question Seandadams!

The phonograph input is very high gain (do they still put these on
amps?). The SB's output will surely be clipped (i.e. sound just
horrible) if you do that. Of course, that doesn't explain the good
results you are getting from streaming sources.

One thing to note. Most people here are *very* particular about their
music. Therefore, most will rip to and recommend you use FLAC.
However, since you are using wireless and are indicating your wireless
is not that strong or dependable, I would again recommend you first test
using MP3's. MP3s are 1/10 the side of the original file on an audio CD
and probably about 1/5 the size of a FLAC file. If those work, then try
FLAC - but with the understanding you are going to be pushing about 5
times the amount of data through the same wireless arrangement.

Looking at your responses, I'm not sure what you music source is. Try
to rip a commercially made CD to MP3 files. I'm not knocking FLAC or
AAC. I just want to do what is the least demanding on your system
during play back to eliminate most if any problems.

Re: [slim] Advice please on improving audio quality

2009-01-25 Thread radish

Seriously, buying an external DAC isn't going to help here. The SB is
more than a match for the DAC in a 90's Onkyo amp, particularly when
the "CD" is a re-burn of mp3 tracks.

There's something more fundamental going on. Two obvious things to
check - are your sources level matched? Louder sources always sound
better to the human ear when comparing, so if they're not the same
level you're not doing a fair comparison. Second, which input are you
using on the amp? If it's one designed for a turntable it'll sound
terrible. To be sure, use the one labeled CD.

You also should try switching out the cable in case it's bad, and it's
worth using the digital cable from the DVD player just so you're
comparing apples with apples.

UPnP has its flaws, but it does support a function to enable gapless
track transition (the operation is SetNextAVTransportURI(), or
something like that - it's been a while!). The Cidero controller and
the Roku soundbridge support it, and one can listen to the Beatles
Abbey Road (gapless album) using the Cidero/Roku combination without
going stark raving mad.

The basic idea is that when one track starts playing and a controller
is notified of that, then the controller can cue up the next track in
advance. If Linn implemented this capability as Roku did on their
MediaRender, then playbacks with Cidero should be gapless.

Not sure if this has any impact on future UPnP (DNLA) designs for the
Slim community or not...

Cheers,

-Oliver

I am getting exactly the same problem as described above. I have an mp3

that the song duration
that slimserver sees

I know what the correct duration is. Now if only I knew how
to manually change the duration that slimserver sees. Does slimserver
look

Try lossless audio, not compressed. Use fixed output from the SB. If you
have a high quality CDP most likely better sound quality than the SB.

Since you said the CDP sounds better than doing this won't improve the
sound on SB (DAC will) - uy a stereo integrated amp to use with main
channels instead of your av receiver (av amps are rubbish in sound
quality) Buy a DAC, use that between SB and the stereo amp.

Re: [slim] Advice please on improving audio quality

2009-01-25 Thread trypan

Thanks for the info. I'll assume from the responses that if I'm getting
a steady signal to the squeezebox, then any issues with audio quality
would be associated with the source (i.e., internet stream or music
file type).

The "CD" I was referring to contains MP3 files copied from the original
discs and then ripped to a new CD.
The audio setup:
1) A very old Sony DVD player (circa 1998)
2) An onyko receiver (circa 1998)
3) DVD player connected via optical digital
4) Squeezebox connected via supplied analog cable
5) Speakers are a simple stereo setup with an 8" sub. I have 4 Orb
audio speakers (2 for left front, 2 for right front)
While this system is nothing particularly fancy, it can create some
nice sound.

The music files I was streaming from my computer are just non-DRM
iTunes files.

Does any of this information shed any more light?

Thanks.

Packet loss is not an issue at all for the Squeezebox. It buffers and
automatically re-sends packets. As long as the buffer doesn't get empty
it will sound the same wireless or not. The buffer getting empty will
cause dropouts, like a CD skipping, playing nothing for a long time
(seconds).

To help you figure out why things sound worse, we need a lot more
info.

* What CD player are you comparing
* What amplifier
* What speakers
* How is the squeezebox connected
* How is the CD player connected

My first observation is that of course internet stream is going to not
sound as good as a good CD ripped to FLAC.

My first suggestion is try ripping using a "secure" CD extractor like
dbPoweramp, EAC, grip, or Max. Then rip a CD to FLAC. FLAC is lossless,
and will probably be better than a normal CD player because the secure
extraction will protect against damaged CDs.

It shouldn't make much difference unless you have horrible analog
cables, suffering from ground loops or the like. Most people don't have
these problem. And if you have connected other items like DVD, CD or
VCR players similarly with good results - well that just proves you know
how to do connect analog audio cables properly.

I don't think so. With digital, you usually get the signal or you
don't. But, that said, not all source material is the same. Streaming
sources may use a slower sampling rate to reduce the likelihood of drop
outs. I once put an entire audio book (over a dozen CDs) onto 1 mp3
compressed CD (normally about a 10:1 compression ratio) by reducing the
sampling rate (achieving about a 15:1 compression ratio). However, it
sounded like the narrator was talking over the phone.

> Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hum, I thought you were going to ask if connecting the duet w/a 10BaseT
cable was going to help. Were you? Well, the answer is probably not.
A bad wireless connection manifests it's self as drop outs. The player
will generally stop playing or stutter. Not play badly with out
interruption. Have you listen to the same files on the computer serving
up the music?

Hey, wait a minute. You are not playing back mp3s or flac or other
commonly used file formats. You are playing back AAC files. Hum, can
SBs natively play AAC files? If they can, I wonder if the AAC files you
have have been correctly formed. If they can not, I wonder if the
transcoding on the server is being done correctly. Regardless, I would
test your set up by ripping some audio CDs to either FLAC or, better
yet, as you are running wireless, MP3s and trying them on your SB. I
bet the results will be more of what you expected.

Actually, no. The volume slider uses a "mixer volume" command to set an
absolute volume level. It does it always the same way, the slider
doesn't distinguish between "volume up" and "volume down".
So this really sounds like a bug in the plugin to me.

The skin's volume buttons send button commands that should mimic the IR
remote's volume buttons.

No one? Well, my old SB has a solidly blue green display and doesn't
change in brightness unless I purposely adjust it. The VFD, that so
many prefer over the LCDs, probably makes up for half the BOM for these
boxes. So I would return, if you still can, the unit for a new one.

What might it be? I don't know, but if I had to guess, I'd say the high
voltage power inverter integral to the VFD's circuit board. If you
can't return the SB, I would replace the entire VFD, if you are up to
it. I think these are Noritake VFDs. But be prepared, new graphic VFDs
will probably be more then $100US.

...good luck

Great news. The original Squeezebox rev 1 cannot play FLAC directly
and the FLAC will be decoded to PCM (or wav?) and then streamed. I
think you're just conflating the file format with the stream format.
The file format is the format of the actual file being played, not the
in-transit representation.

Well can you deduce it from this:
Volume ipeng skin - neither the bar nor the arrows work
colume ipeng app - the slider will bring the volume down but not back
up again

Overall I do find IRBlaster unreliable - it seems to get out of sync

Re: [slim] Can't see music library on my Boom or Squeezenetwork but it is there on SqueezeCenter

2009-01-25 Thread trypan

It may still be a firewall issue. To confirm that it isn't Norton,
you'll need to uninstall Norton and then try the Squeezebox. At least
this is what tech support had me do (make sure you have the means to
reinstall Norton first). Before calling them, I also tried adding the
firewall ports manually, but I wasn't doing it right.

My SBB works (almost) perfectly. It connects to the computer, accesses
SqueezeNetwork and everything. The only problem is that it doesn't seem
to be able to see my music library. I can see them all listed there on
SqueezeCenter but they don't make it as far as my machine - where it
simply reads 'Empty' on the Music Library.

And, to confuse matters, my Favourites don't show up in my
SqueezeCenter. They are there on SqueezeNetwork, and on my Boom but -
when the player drops out - I lose all my favourites and have to update
the firmware to get them back. SqueezeNetwork recognizes the Boom as I
can start and play it from there but my library stored on my PC doesn't
make it beyond SquuezeCenter (and definitely not as far as my Boom).

I have Norton where I have 'Trusted' my Boom and have checked the
Windows ports to see that they are all privileged but I just can't seem
to get my library to appear.

Didn't worry me too much at first as I was happy playing LastFM and
Deezer all day long but a couple of months in it is starting to be a
bit of an irritation.

I think it should do better than that. I've successfully synced
(sunk?) a SliMP3 and SB2 and had very good results. It could be due
to the transcoding that is required though for your case. 7.3.2 fixed
several sync and transcoding bugs I believe, so you might give that a
shot. Otherwise, check the "Synchonize" settings for each player in
the web interface and make sure that none of them have odd values for:

Player Start Delay (0=default)
Player Audio Delay (0=default)
Minimum Synchronization Adjustment (30=default, maybe)
Network Packet Latency (2=default, maybe)

Note that these settings are on a per-player basis so check all your players.

WinScp is not that difficult

Hostname: enter the ip of your controller (in my case 192.168.1.151)
Username: root
Password: the password you get from the controller when you enabled SSH

Private key no input needed

Maybe you get an error ralated to group ... ignore and continue.

Can anybody help a complete it idiot to access the controller to copy
the files in NAD-IR.

I have downloaded and installed winscp as recommended in the first
post. I also activated the ssh on the controller.

But how do i actually "log-on" to the controller. When I activate the
ssh i get an ip-adress and a password. But winscp ask for a host name,
a user name,a password and a private key.

Any idea to what im doing wrong. Winscp is totally new for my (as many
other) things :-)

The Squeezebox (SB1) has no hardware decoder for FLAC while the SB2

[slim] Mp3 Streaming won't stream

2009-01-25 Thread teeitup

Running Debian Linux. (Normal SC operation to SB3 and Duet work fine)

If I use an mp3 collection streaming works.
Using the flac collection I get connection but no output.

Lame is installed and Squeezecenter indicates that it is.
I was advised to put lame in the Squeezecenter bin folder. The closest
I can find is /usr/share/squeezecenter/Bin. I have put copy of lame
there and in /usr/sbin where the squeezecenter-server script is
located. I restarted SC after I made these changes. I still can't get
any mp3 streaming with my flac collection.

What am I missing?

I have read the wiki and it doesn't seem like it should be too
complicated to set up.

Thanks,

Re: [slim] Where to begin with multi room design

2009-01-25 Thread lanierb

I want to second (third?) the idea of putting Cat 5 to each room instead
of (or in addition to) speaker wires. This will give you lots of
options, both now and in the future. For example, in some rooms you
might want a squeezebox classic which displays the current music being
played. Your other questions have mostly been answered.

If you go with the centralized solution (your current idea), you can
either get one box that contains many amps (they make up to 10 or 12
channel amps), or you can get separate two-channel amps for each room.

Read my first post in this thread. It will tell you how to add them
back. Note that it also warns that they can be overwritten when you
update Squeezecenter, so it makes sense to back up that file before you
do the update. (This could happen even before Logitech took over.)
Anyway, adding them back will take less time than even answering this
thread did so no big deal.

Re: [slim] Internet Archive or Slim Devices problem?

2009-01-25 Thread sage23

The LMA plugin only points to the OPML metadata files located at
www.squeezenetwork.com. The OPML metadata files then point to the
actual streams on LMA. To me, it doesn't look like the LMA plugin in
squeezecenter actually browses LMA at www.archive.org at all!

The issue seems to be that the www.squeezenetwork.com folks are not
updating the OPML files on a regular basis, so the plugins cannot tell
that new shows have been added.

What makes it weird is that there is an RSS feed at LMA which contains
the newest releases, which they have an OMPL file for (but probably
still not updated all that frequently). There is one specific to the
Grateful Dead as well. Its easy to create OPML files with RSS feeds.

In the example of the Grateful Dead, the "by year" OPML files have not
been updated in some time on www.squeezenetwork.com. At this time, the
Grateful Dead Year 1969 has 201 shows on LMA, and on squeezenetwork only
149.

To me, it looks like Squeezecenter and the plugins are working as
designed. We need to get the www.squeezenetwork.com folks to update
their OPML files on a more regualar basis for the LMA.

[slim] Synchronisation problems squeezebox and squeezebox2

2009-01-25 Thread Neil Sleightholm

I have several squeezeboxes and have noticed that I get a massive delay
when trying to synchronise between squeezebox's and squeezebox2's, the
delay is a about 2-3s with the squeezebox's first. Should these 2
generations of squeezebox be able to sync?

I am using SqueezeCenter 7.3.1 and my music is flac format. Both the
squeezebox and squeezebox2 seem to be playing the music in flac format
so there isn't any transcoding going on. Both players are on wired
connections, although I also see the problem with a wireless player.

Re: [slim] Live Music Archive

2009-01-25 Thread sage23

I am as frustrated as well. I listen to the Grateful Dead quite a bit,
and part of the rationale for buying my Duet was to tie it into LMA.

>From looking at the LMA plugin, it looks like it only reads the OPML
files located on the www.squeezenetwork.com site. The plugin is not
actually browsing the www.achive.org site where the LMA is located as
one might expect.

http://www.squeezenetwork.com/api/lma/v1/opml/concerts?artist=Grateful%20Dead

It looks like what might be happening is that the OMPL files at the
squeezenetwork site are not being updated on a frequent basis. Its very
easy to export RSS feeds to OPML, but it does not look like this is
being done.

Maybe we should ask the www.squeezenetwork.com folks to update their
OPML files more frequently.

[slim] Can't see music library on my Boom or Squeezenetwork but it is there on SqueezeCenter

2009-01-25 Thread RazorBrades

My Pronto has learnt IR commands, e.g. to set the AV input on the amp

IIRC the '5000' at the start means the rest is RC5 encoded.

Along these same lines, if it's not too late to run Cat5 to each of the
rooms, that would give you a lot more flexibility, and be more in
keeping with the way that SBs are designed to be used for whole-house
audio. There's nothing necessarily wrong with the suggestions of
sticking several SBR + amp pairs (or several SBRs with a good
multi-source amp) in the basement closet, but there are definite
advantages to having the SBs and amps (or powered speakers) in the
rooms themselves.

- Yes
- Yes but with minor issues
- No
- It does not work at all

A new version of ACC is available. Changelist is below:

ADDED: Display total albums and total tracks as last line of generated
catalog
FIXED: Proper error handling for incorrectly specified remote folder
(ACC would hang)
FIXED: No album covers displayed when international characters in
physical path to cover file. The 'Use album cover stored in
SqueezeCenter instead of physical file' worked ok for these album
covers though.
CHANGED: Display CDx (if used in the tags) in the header instead of
tracklist otherwise when selecting the option not to display tracks, CD
number would not be displayed.
CHANGED: When not using a '0' prefix for track number < 10, the
tracknumber is correctly aligned with track numbers >10
CHANGED: Title suffix 'by artist', 'by album', or 'by genre' changed to
small characters and next line

Re: [slim] Use Duet Controller as remote for your amp.

2009-01-25 Thread Egnos

Michael, the reason why i took sleep is that i was too lazy to design a
new png image with "disc" on it.
thanks for teh higfh contrats png image. Who is going to make a nice
image for the remote.

Autopilot, in the file NADIRapplet.lua you find the definitions of the
keys.
In my case the following 4 keys. The first key-sleep is to select disc
input, the second is power en up down is for volume up and down.
It is very simple to add more keys (see the IR example on your
controller).

local keymap = {
{ key=KEY_SLEEP, x=29, y=34, dx=18, dy=0, ir="0xE13E916E"
},
{ key=KEY_POWER, x=207, y=27, dx=22, dy=0, ir="0xE13E01FE"
},
{ key=KEY_UP, x=119, y=34, dx=18, dy=0, ir="0xE13E11EE"
},
{ key=KEY_DOWN, x=119, y=85, dx=18, dy=0, ir="0xE13E31CE"
},
}

As you can see there is a parameter called ir="0x".
You have to find the IR codes for your amp. Try for instance the lirc
database http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/
maybe your remote is there.

I prefer to keep the .m3u files around because it's the easiest way to
play a whole album, in correct track order, when I'm playing directly
from the hard drive (with winamp, xmplay, etc) and not through SC.

I tried re-indexing everything with the Playlists Folder set to a dummy
folder. It didn't index all my m3u and it seems like I can save new
ones, so maybe that's all I needed to do...

show you to be a complete idiot when I happened to look at those links
:)

You are a bad man.

Re: [slim] Where to begin with multi room design

2009-01-25 Thread dbrotzen

Your questions have already been answered, I'd just like to add a few
comments. Since you have prewired your house with speaker wire, you've
planned to put your amp/all your amps in one location. Long speaker
wires are likely to degrade the quality of your sound, and is likely to
lower the ultimate sound level output of your amps/speakers. With
wireless distribution of music you place the receiver and the amp in
each room, and speaker wires can be short.

I'm hooking my Squeezebox Duet reveiver's analogue output to cheap
integrated amps in each room. Since they are integrated amps, they come
with volume control. I use T-amps, which output 2x15 watts, and I
usually never run them above 7-10 watts. That's what I use in those
rooms where I will listen to music more casually. The amps cost some 80
USD or so.

I have a separate listening room, where I use a digital amplifier from
Tact. The digital amp is hooked to the digital output of the Logitech
receiver and all the D/A conversion takes place in the amp. Tact has
integrated versions with volume control, all pre-amp functions built
in, and even room correction (measuring the room's effect on sound, and
adjusting the output accordingly). Tact claims that their amps are less
sensitive to speaker wire length, so you could use their amps with your
long wired solution. However, in all cases I use short speaker wires.

Re: [slim] Slow loading of right pane (playlist contents)

2009-01-25 Thread Michael Herger

If you search the forum you'll see that McAfee is responsible for a lot of
trouble. That right pane not loading issue is just the latest occurence I know
of. Just to be sure: check server.log (see Settings/Information). Do you get
some MySQL related error message in there?

Make sure you configure McAfee to ignore *.my*, and do a full wipe/rescan of
your music.

Is there a new version of SqueezePlay available? And why isn't there a
clear SqueezePlay download source where all the other downloadable
files are? Just curious.
