Your questions have already been answered, I'd just like to add a few
comments. Since you have prewired your house with speaker wire, you've
planned to put your amp/all your amps in one location. Long speaker
wires are likely to degrade the quality of your sound, and is likely to
lower the ultimate sound level output of your amps/speakers. With
wireless distribution of music you place the receiver and the amp in
each room, and speaker wires can be short.

I'm hooking my Squeezebox Duet reveiver's analogue output to cheap
integrated amps in each room. Since they are integrated amps, they come
with volume control. I use T-amps, which output 2x15 watts, and I
usually never run them above 7-10 watts. That's what I use in those
rooms where I will listen to music more casually. The amps cost some 80
USD or so.

I have a separate listening room, where I use a digital amplifier from
Tact. The digital amp is hooked to the digital output of the Logitech
receiver and all the D/A conversion takes place in the amp. Tact has
integrated versions with volume control, all pre-amp functions built
in, and even room correction (measuring the room's effect on sound, and
adjusting the output accordingly). Tact claims that their amps are less
sensitive to speaker wire length, so you could use their amps with your
long wired solution. However, in all cases I use short speaker wires.
