Re: [slim] What software setup for a new HP Windows Media Server
Actually I'm running 7.3.2, which doesn't have the MSS add-in, but it runs fine - I access everything I need via the web interface. The recent work in 7.3.3 and 7.4 is only to further _simplify_ SC management on a WHS, not to enable it. Any version should run on the WHS. I've been asking around quite a bit (WiX mailing list, WHS forums over at MS.com, personal contacts). The conclusion I've refered to come (among others) from a HP MediaSmart developer: we do have to close the admin console to upgrade the dlls that are used by the admin console - no way to run the update the add-in from within the Console ...and the forums over at Microsoft's site (http://tinyurl.com/alpgfl). To the question How to update an add-in? I got a simple answer: You uninstall the old version, then install the new version.. Do the guys you mention know about ways around this limitation? You do know that it doesn't have standard HiFi Output jacks don't you? Very easy to hook an SB to it with Toslink or Coax, but the outputs are designed for mixing or 1/8 jacks. It wouldn't be so bad if they offered XLR or RCA outs. It has a nice Class A headphone amp. It appears to have the same DAC as the Transporter which says tons about how poorly its internal circuits are designed because the Company Specs and Reviewed Tested Specs show a big difference in the specs that DAC chip can deliver. The USB is limited to 16/44.1 Nice inexpensive unit to fool around with recording/mixing, but IMO I would not use it in a stereo system. The additional circuits and mixing parts/switches are also probably some of the reasons the specs take such a big hit. Is it ten times better? Has anyone heard it? I ask because the reviewer on http://www.computeraudiophile.com/node/1420 is a perceptive guy. But getting back to stereo use, I didn't say it couldn't be hooked up to a stereo. By not providing XLR or RCAs, one has to do it the Mickey Mouse way with adapters or some oddball cables from Radio Shack. Basically what I'm saying is save the $175 and get an audio only Stereo DAC. IMO for my money, I would rather just use a plain SB3/SBR or get a nice audio only DAC to use with either of them. That's all I'm saying. If somebody is just using it with a computer only or with a mixing/recording/midi/computer setup, it has a lot going for it. Re: [slim] SB3 + Controller or Duet ?
No, the SB Receiver (SBR) does not have any features or improvements over the SB3. It has a different DAC, but it is pretty much equivalent to the DAC in the SB3. Mostly the SBR is an SB3 without the vacuum flourescent display (VFD), infrared receiver, or headphone jack. But I bet if you think hard enough, you can find some other place in your home where you would like to have a Squeezebox. The Receiver is going to be pretty much identical to the SB3 in sound quality... so that's not going to be a deciding factor. As for whether the Duet is worth it... well, you can take the SBR portion of it and add music to a room that presently doesn't have music. Trivial to do if you already have SC up and running. If you recall how much of a difference the SB3 made in how you listen to music, having it even more available is that much better. So, yeah, IMHO, you should get a Duet, steal the controller for where you want it, and use the Receiver in the office or some other room where you have a web browser about but don't want to mess with all the Windows sounds interfering with your music. That way you get the controller, and music for one more room. It's really up to you whether you want to do that or not, but... I didn't last long at all with only one SB product.. adding rooms is easy and makes it even cooler. Adding a room for basically a hundred bucks is even better. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60365 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Controller cannot connect to SqueezeNetwork
I have found that switching between SC and SN is very unreliable. Many times my controller will complain that it can't connect to SqueezeNetwork. This is especially the case almost everytime when its previous state was connected to SC and the server was switch off so both controller and player will display the blue wireless icon. When I try to connect to SqueezeNetwork i get the can't connect error. If I reset the controller and the player everything is back to normal. This is really frustrating. Any ideas? Re: [slim] Denon 3805 DAC or SB3?
I have a similar setup, and for a while I ran both digital and analog outputs into my HT amp. Once I adjusted the input of the analog side level to be similar to that of the internal dac output, I couldn't tell the difference between the two sonically- the NAD uses Crystal Dacs I believe. Then I changed my speakers over from BW 601s to Krix Phoenix, and now there is a noticeable difference between them - the NAD seems to colour the music more to the mid-range, than does the Squeezebox. Sometimes, as I learnt, it takes a change in some other component to reveal sonic differences in the source. So, as Radish suggests, it's whatever sounds better to you, rather than the spec or brand of the components.
