Re: [slim] Kentucky Fried Squeezebox?
Thanks for the suggestions. I should have put a bit more detail in my original post. I did later on by the proper 5V power cords for my other two SBs, and they're both working great. The SB that I fried, however, does not work with these cords, which is why I think it's fried. I plug it it in, and a red light comes on in the back (SP/DIF connection I think) but the display doesn't turn on in the front. I assume the next step is to ship it back to SD. Is there a flat fix-it rate, or should I just save up and buy a new device? [slim] How do you listen to BBC Radio??
I often have BBC Radio 4 playing while I'm working. I originally used to use Alien BBC but a few months ago it started constantly re-buffering and someone recommended using RadioTime. This was far better playback but doesn't give the options to use the Listen again feature. Every now again (such as today) it won't connect at all. Over the last few releases of SqueezeCenter I've noticed a few more options to play BBC radio but some of them don't work or give a bad connection. I was wondering how other people out there listen to BBC Radio? Is there a way to use the Listen Again BBC features on a SqueezeBox? Is Alien BBC now dead and buried? Yes, I did several rescans due to the fact that the cache got cleared when I uninstalled the previous WHS version (I see from this thread that it has been fixed in recent builds) and had to reinstall all the plugins. Since having the ability to play aac is far more important to me than having a WHS version I have now uninstalled it and reinstalled 7.3.2 (normal version via Remote Desktop) and aac support is back :-) I still think that a WHS AddIn is a great idea and I am coming back to try it again when it is more official. Re: [slim] Kentucky Fried Squeezebox?
Check inside for a loose connection which may have occurred in shipping. Make sure the boards are fully seated. The reason I don't think you have a fried unit is that SB3's inputs are protected from overvoltage and reverse polarity. When I was testing this feature, I tried some incorrect power supplies and could not get it to cook. So then I tried putting mains voltage directly across the DC input - this vaporized the traces off the PCB between the protection circuit and the input plug, but once I reconnected them it worked just fine! -- seanadams seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60922 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] need better wireless range?
bobkoure;401985 Wrote: I just ran across ' a free antenna project' (http://freeantennas.com/projects/template/) that some folks here might find of interest. I've not done this for myself (hardwires all through the house) but have built reflectors (not of this design) for friends. These look as though they'd work better. In principle these designs all tend to improve signal strength to a specific area that the antenna is pointed at with the drawback being a decrease in overall coverage due to directionality and poor backside coverage due to front to back ratios. I do see several issues with the article. The first is that painting the project is something that should be avoided. Also the article says that one reason for doing this was to improve WiFi security, which this antenna will not do. For any security gained from the poor backside performance is far out weighed by the new front side signature. The antenna is actually making it easier for somebody that is WarDriving to access the signal with the directional high gain antennas they use. On the positive side, the use of these type antennas can help when one can't put the access point in the center of the area to be covered. In an example where the access point is at one end of the house these antennas are a means to get signal to the other side of the home. They also help the neighbor to the backside of the antenna by lowering any possible interference to other WiFi networks again because of the poor backside pattern. The new pattern from the parabolic will not be reaching outside the house into the neighbors yard/house, as would an omni antenna located near an outside wall. Of course, if one has a short house length wise the opposite is true of the other neighbor as one would be blasting them with WiFi coverage. Personally, before I would undertake one of these antenna projects, I would look into what it would take to place the WiFi Router/AP at the proper central point to cover the area required. In my case, it was as simple as running coax cable to the closet under the stairs, putting in a shelf to set my cable modem and wireless router on, and now my AP is in the center of the house. Remember, there is no requirement to have ones DSL/Cable Modem right next to ones computer. A simple Ethernet cable run or WiFi card is all that is needed to get that PC in the bedroom online. I have built many of these antennas (not for WiFi use but other projects) as well as used commercial versions to light up building interiors that had poor network coverage due to poor line of site with data network towers. The solution is to point a Yagi antenna on the roof at the nearest network tower, run low loss coax down to the problem floor, attach the coax to a BDA (bi-directional RF amplifier), attach a coax to the other side of the BDA and attach that feedline to a parabolic or panel antenna to light up the floor with coverage. The handheld data units now see the outside network and can send and receive data. -- iPhone *iPhone* 'Last.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/mephone) Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, Vandersteen Quatro, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: SB3, GFR-700HD, Thiel 2.3, Second Boom Home Office: SB3, NAD C370, two VSM-1 Home Gym: SB3, Parasound Vamp v.3, Thiel PowerPoint 1.2 Mobile: SB3, Audioengine A5 iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60801 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

One can prepare (or pay to have someone prepare) a central location with incoming signal wire, electricity, shelving, etc, if that is possible in your home. All of that takes time, money, and knowledge that most people don't have. Alternatively, one can spend 10 minutes and $0 with these ersatz solutions of cardboard and aluminum foil and solve the problem. Without risking electrocution or burning your house down. [slim] Help with volume normalization/ReplayGain
I have a fairly large collection of CDs ripped to flac files. I use Sqeezebox Dual to serve/play these files through my home theater audio system. My listening habits are that I mostly listen to random mix playlists and only occaisionaly listen to entire albums. In this context randon means that the tracks within the playlist will come from many different CDs and will be played in no particular order. I have noticed, when playing songs from my collection, that the volume is all over the place. Some tracks will be so soft that they can barely be heard while others are VERY loud at the same amplifier volume setting. After doing some reading I have realized that what I need is to apply ReplayGain tags to my library. However I am unclear as to how to best do this to accomplish my goals and am hoping that somebody here can help. What I would like to do is to write ReplayGain tags to the flac files that would work for both listening modes. It seems to me that for random play, track gain is the way to go while album gain (where album is defined as single piece of work not neccesarily a single physical disc) would be ideal for listening to whole albums. Can anyone tell me what tool to use to write ReplaGain tags to suit those needs? It would also be nice if you could point me at a tutorial on using the suggested tool for this task. Secondly how should I set SqueezeCenter up to use these tags? Would I need to change the volume normalization method for each listening session or can this be set to use album gain tags when playing an entire album but use the track gain tags when playing from a random mix? I did mention the batteries and charger in my previous post when I recommended the SD1100, but I guess I didn't make it explicit enough. In any case, I still think it's the best little PS camera on the market, especially for the price. I've never traveled in Ireland (or the U.K.) so I can't comment from firsthand knowledge on how likely it is that you'll be able to use a converter on the charger. But my daughter spent a semester in Wales a few years back, and was able to use a standard European-to-US power converter with her battery charger (as well as with her laptop) without encountering any problems. It's also entirely possible that Canon has a UK-specific charging unit for the camera; this might be worth checking into before giving up on the Canon altogether. -- Dogberry2 Dogberry2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18883 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60696 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] need better wireless range?
Goodsounds;403387 Wrote: iphone, You're right that having the wireless AP in a central location is best. For many, that's a difficult or impractical approach. There was an article in the NY Times within the last few weeks about low/no tech solutions to high tech problems, and do-it-yourself wifi antennas were mentioned. Your absolutely right, which is why I said that most people should just take a minute to think and see how easy or how hard it is to put the AP where it should really be. But how much knowledge and how hard is it for somebody to put a small shelf on a wall and extend a coax cable or phone line. I will tell you, not much. Closets with lights are simple, unscrew the light bulb and screw in an outlet/bulb holder and one has power and light. I don't believe very many people (if any) have ever been electrocuted by pulling a run of coax cable or Ethernet cable in their home that was wired by a certified electrician when the house was built. I guess my real point was two fold. Many people have the silly notion that the cable/DSL modem and WiFi router have to be beside their PC and many people are just to lazy to do it right the first time so they look for ways to get around doing it right which can take up more time and energy. The engineer in me will not let me not do it correctly. Sure, I have put up something temporary while I am installing/working on the final setup, but again that's just temporary. Re: [slim] How do you listen to BBC Radio??
I too have a number of problems listening to BBC radio live feeds. I'm based in the UK, so should have no problem getting the feeds (from a legal perspective anyway). I'm running SC7.3.3 on Ubuntu 8.10, with a wireless SB3. I've found that the live AlienBBC streams for Radio 2 and 4 to be reliable. For BBC iPlayer, I've given up trying to listen to the feeds. All the live feeds consistently cause my SB3 to crash and reboot. The feeds play for about 30 seconds (I'm guessing the buffer size) then it all stops. I'd love to listen to these feeds for the higher bit-rate. I don't believe this is a BBC iPlayer plugin issue. I have copied the high bit rate WMA URL into Tune in URL and I get the same issue. Through the More Radio.. menu, I can play the 65Kbit WMA streams without problem in the whole, certainly they don't cause my SB3 to reboot. [slim] Upgrade Woes
Oh my gosh... My Squeezebox has been running perfectly for ages. It was set to start as a Windows XP service and always started when I booted the computer or came back from Hibernate. Even WoL worked perfectly (and I could even hibernate using the Server Power Control plugin). I've put off upgrading since (I think) 7.0 as I know that I've had a few problems in the past and everything was ok. Then, last night, I tried to use Alien BBC and realised that I needed an update. Of course, this also meant updating Squeezecenter. I took the plunge, knowing that I'd need updated plugins. After learning a few new features, I appeared to have Squeezecenter 7.3.2 up-and-running with all of the plugins I needed (including the pop3 email reader which I had to reconfigure manually). I was quite chuffed. I put the PC into Hibernate mode and went to bed. This morning, I took the PC out of Hibernate mode but my Squeezebox didn't reconnect. I reconfigured SC to start 'when I log on' and back to being a service. The same happened when I went into and out of Hibernation again. Then I discovered that Server Power Control just leaves the computer on and does something odd to SC so that 'Extras' is displayed on my SB3. I have since, uninstalled and reinstalled SC, I have rebooted the PC many times. Quite often the service won't start (and the logs tell me that There is already another copy of the SqueezeCenter running on this machine - it doesn't show up in Task Manager (under any user). I'm at wits end now and, as usual, I'm regretting the upgrade. It always causes problems! Is there something that stops the current version of SC coming back to life after hibernation? Why the warning about multiple instances of SC running? Any guidance would be gratefully received. Re: [slim] How do you listen to BBC Radio??
There are options other than AlienBBC and IPlayer plugins, although I also use both for ad-hoc Listen Again (in truth I almost always use the iPlayer plugin rather than Alien these days as I find the schedule-based navigation more intuitive and the streams are better quality). For live streams by far the best option for me is some form of broadcast streaming - Hauppauge Nova-T or S + DVBServer or DVBShout for DVB-T (Freeview) or DVB-S (Freesat); Psion Wavefinder + DABBar for DAB, or Griffin RadioShark2 + RadioShark plugin for FM. Any of these will relay a broadcast signal to your Squeezebox(es) with no dependancies upon your local Internet connection, ISP or momentary BBC server capacity, any of which can mess up the stream and waste capacity. For regular programmes which you know you want to listen to I really recommend GET_IPLAYER http://linuxcentre.net/getiplayer/ which you can use to download known favourites at an uncongested time - and in the best available quality. Load the shows into your Music path and a re-scan will index them along with all of your other music, with a cron task to delete them after seven days to comply with BBC copyright. My current hierarchy is: Live radio (and morning alarms): DVBShout from DVB-T Regular shows where quality is important: GET_IPLAYER (using PVR amode=iphone options) ad-hoc Listen Again: IPlayer plugin NPR Morning Edition / Car Talk: NPR plugin which doesn't leave much time for anything else. It has a WAP client but I've never seen a WML skin for SC, and WAP in general is pretty awful to use. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60983 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Spotify: User info stolen from music site
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7925455.stm The music streaming service Spotify has been targeted by hackers. The Swedish company says people's personal details, including e-mail addresses, dates of birth and addresses, were all stolen. However, it is thought credit-card details, which were handled by a third party, have remained secure. Spotify has apologised for the security lapse and advised users who registered on the site before 19 December 2008 to change their passwords. It is thought hackers gained access to user data at the end of 2008, although the security breach only came to light at the end of last week. ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Did Mike Valera leave the company?

Good for him that not only did he find something, he made a step up. I would venture to guess that he saw the writing on the wall and decided to move onto something a bit more secure. This time around the Slim Devices BU was apparently spared a RIF, but who's to say that will be the case the next time around. Re: [slim] Help with volume normalization/ReplayGain
Thanks a lot! That was, what I also badly was looking for. The adjusting of volume track by track is very annoying. These 9.9kB would be a nice plugin (or even standard option) to SC. I will try it this evening, hoping to be clever enough to get it work. -- rossi CD Ripstation Micro QNAP209 (2*1TB) SC7.3.3 Allnet Powerline Ethernet SB Duet/Linn Numerik Triodesound Jona _or_ Sonus Faber Musica Lowther Fidelio (PM6A) _or_ DIY with Goodmans Twinaxiom 8 both supported by an ATS bass corner horn ears brain mood feet (or not) rossi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21599 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=60971 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
