The DIR-625 Rev C has been the most robust and stable wireless router I
have used. Great connection to the Duet Controller anywhere in the
house, even 2 floors up. Never requires rebooting.

I didn't have much luck with the WRT54GL: started dropping wireless
connections after just 6 months. The Tomato firmware didn't remedy.
Died completely within 8 months.

The way that it's supposed to work is that if you set up wireless
networking with the ethernet cable attached, during the network
configuration you're asked whether or not you want to enable bridging.
The SB should still see your server.

One of the more fascinating features of tomato is WOL over internet,
but not in the usual way.

You log in to your routers admin page via https from the *outside* and
from a menu you can issue wake on lan to local devices.

I use this to wake my server when I'm traveling to do remote streaming
to my hotel room. I then have the admin page for the server port
forwarded so i can turn it off when I'm done

QoS is also a useful feature (when i figure out hove to use that)

As Mnyb said, note that the WRT54GL is the model that supports 3rd
party firmware. The current WRT54G models do not.

Do some googling and you'll find plenty of info on Tomato and dd-wrt.
But even with the stock firmware the WRT54GL is a very good router. I
don't know if any of the newer Linksys models support 3rd party
firmware, or for that matter, how good they are.

Re: [slim] Router on Deathbed - Recommendations?

2009-03-28 Thread Club1820

Thanks for the recommendations!

I took a quick look at the WRT54G. It does indeed look like an older
Linksys model similar to mine, except with 2 ext. antennas. Will keep
this on my short list.

So are there no real advantages/disadvantages to external vs internal
antennas?

Also, did not realize you could swap out the mfg. firmware for a third
party fw. Tomato & dd-wrt I assume I can google and dl?

By using either of these fw, it improves on the stock fw?

Before reading your responses, I was actually considering the updated
version of the WRK54G, the WRT54G2. It has 2 internal antennas and can
be had for $46.95 (free shipping) on Amazon. Seems to have good
reviews. Any comments on this one?

As for the Netgear wnr854t, I also took a quick look on Amazon.
Unfortunately it has overwhelming bad reviews. Not just an avg rating,
but 2 on a scale of 5. I've learned my lesson the hard way in the past
when I've ignored bad reviews and then it turns out I get the same
problems others had stated. So I think I may pass on this one. But
thanks for the input Nonreality!!! Much appreciated.

I guess I should have given some info on my system. Running Windows
Vista on Desktop & Windows XP on laptop. All wireless devices are G so
I am content with a G only router.

If any others can chime in, I would appreciate it. I think whichever
choice I make, I will make it by tomorrow so that it can ship on
Monday.

Thanks again!

If you're saying there's an existing wireless network but the headless
box isn't on it, then yes you should be able to use the bridging to
have it join the wireless network (which is I think what you're asking
for). The only unusual thing is that the SC server will be on the wired
side of the bridge, but I think that should work OK.

[slim] Spotify on Squeezebox

2009-03-28 Thread Peter314

Not sure whether this has been discussed here, but there is a useful
guide to streaming Spotify via a Squeezebox:
http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/topics/can_you_stream_to_a_squeezebox?utm_medium=widget&utm_source=widget_spotify

About three quarters of the way down, Magnus gives detailed
instructions for how to output Spotify from a pc to a SB. I am indebted
to Simeon at pfm for pointing this out. It works really well!

You have to use the pc to select the music, so it's not a perfect
solution. But until official support for Spotify is made available,
this will do me very nicely. :)

[slim] Playlists grow extra arms and legs...

2009-03-28 Thread Howard Passman

Sorry, couldn't figure out how to word the title and had already tried
this in the SC forum. Here's my issue:

My playlists create duplicate songs by themselves. I can create a
playlist with 30 songs and every time I open it, there are more songs
in the form of duplicate entries. I've checked and double checked and
that is what is happening. The only caveat is, it only seems to occur
to checklists with large numbers of songs in them. 10 songs or so are
fine. Much more than 20 and it starts ocurring.

Anyone seen this behavior? Anyone cured it?

To you at least. :)

I can hear the compression artifacts in any MP3 or AAC bitrate (even
320). Too many years of music training, I suppose. Makes it a nightmare
to listen to off-key vocals (though tuned vocals drive me even crazier
:D), lazy drummers ("OMG! These hi-hat 16ths are too fast! I'd best
slow down the entire band for this section of the song!"), etc.

Suffice it to say that there really are only two safe recommendations
us users can make to one another: 1. keep a losslessly-compressed copy
of your sources somewhere so you can recompress at will. 2. Use
whatever lossy format/rate works for _your_ears_.

Back to AAC for a moment: Bring on the FF/RW! I've just started with
Squeezcenter recently and haven't yet done all my various transcoding
to work with it best. In the meantime, I'd love to be able to seek
within my AAC files.

optional pay element.

I still like last.fm though. It's a different service to Spotify and
others, in that it's all more about discovering different and new
music, rather than listening to what you want (I have my archived CD
collection and Squeezebox for that anyway).

For me last.fm is at least free at home, but sadly it won't be at work
due to the ownership of the company I'm currently working at. I can
fully understand the position though, especially considering the legal
complexity of clearing rights for every country in the world. Though I
would have thought they could run adverts instead of charging a fee.

As for last.fm support in SqueezeCenter, Squeezebox, etc. As it's
officially in the product and has Logitech's name behind it, hopefully
it will be seen as an official 3rd party app. I also listen to last.fm
using a plugin to foobar, and via Mobbler on my Nokia N80 and I suspect
they might get blocked. There have already been issues where last.fm
changed the API and the 3rd party developers have mentioned that
last.fm were talking about access rights to their newer APIs.

Re: [slim] Router on Deathbed - Recommendations?

2009-03-28 Thread Nonreality

I have the Netgear wnr854t N router. I've been using lately with just G
type wireless but it's been a perfect router for me for over a year now.
I've had no problems with it what so ever since I had it. It's fast
and my SB3 has never had a problem with it and not a single dropout or
stutter. It was about 120 when I bought it but I think you can get it
for about 70-80 US now. I went with it and was running a laptop with a
N card but just using the g type now. After I went to it I saw
improvements with all my G type stuff so it seems to be a good all
around performer. I figured having the N type would be good for future
devices also.
