I was using really old version on Windows which runs fine.
I have just upgraded new version and I'd like to try it on Linux

Monkey Audio APE files any more.

Make sure you have the Monkey player executable installed. I think it's a

I've had a squeezebox 3 since Christmas. I use it almost all the time as

What you see might be the latency between your house and the SN servers.
Where do you live? Where is your player connecting to

I've had a squeezebox 3 since Christmas. I use it almost all the time as
an internet radio player through the squeezenetwork (ie, the computer is
usually turned off, or not running squeezecenter).
My wireless router is connected via a FIOS fiber optic connection up to
the side of the house...I can stream full screen video with NO problems,
so I know my connection is not the problem.
Aside from the annoying buffering, this thing fails to respond to the
remote FAR too often...20% to 30% of the time. Either it's WAY too slow
to accept a command (several seconds go by ... what's it doing??) or it
doesn't accept it at all. I have to physically unplug the SB to reset
the damn thing. It loses the connection far too often, and won't respond
to on/off commands, or the hold-down left button.
Coming from a remote control mfr., I fund this intolerable. It's just
way too flaky a unit for dependable operation. Is there any way to
 remedy this?

To rule out network or server issues, try navigating the firmware setup
menu. Just use the up and down arrows within a menu. If the setup menu
is responsive then you can be certain that the IR hardware is OK,
otherwise it is certainly defective. Also note that an IR issue would
_not_ cause delays, only lost commands.

If it's not the IR then it must be either a network or a server-side
issue. There are possible network problems besides bandwidth that could
be at fault, for example an IP conflict or bridging loop. Also,
successfully streaming video is not evidence of a low-latency,
low-packet-loss link. Those problems can be masked by sufficient
buffering, while still causing problems for interactive traffic. Try
running a ping and see if there is loss or delay that happens
concurrently with the UI lag.

The server software could be bogged down for some reason. A good way to
test that is to connect directly to Squeezenetwork instead. If SN is
faster over the internet than your local system, then you've probably
narrowed it down to the server. It could be hurting for RAM or could
be busy scanning the disk for some reason (it's done scanning your
library, right?). Running Squeezecenter on another computer would be a
good test.

Our phone support is very experienced with this kind of
troubleshooting. You should try them next if none of the above helps.

It uses the Slim IR controller itself, you might be able to use others.

When the SB is off (showing the screensaver) button presses are
forwarded to lirc.
When the SB is on they are processed by SqueezeCenter.

That worked pretty well in practice, you don't use your SB and MythTV at

Have a look at the power brick. Under input voltage does it have
100-240V 50-60hz? or something similar.

If it does then yes it will work. If it is only 100v 50hx, then the
power supply won't work and you would either need a converter or a new
power brick.

I know all the current adapters are universal, but I don't know about
older ones.

The unit itself will work perfectly as they are identical all round the
world.

Re: [slim] why is the sb3 remote SO unreliable?

2009-04-15 Thread snarlydwarf

izzym;415514 Wrote:

Aside from the annoying buffering, this thing fails to respond to the

That implies to me that it is a network reliability issue. The usage
of a slim device is different than a PC: PC's usually have tons of RAM
to buffer things, so a short dropout on a wireless network just means a
short dropout on keeping the buffer full.. there is still plenty there
to play stuff.

With less memory, though, you're more likely to run out of buffered
data and that means sound dropouts.

If the network drops, the SB can not send back the I hit volume
notice to the server... it gets held up by other data that is destined
for the server.

You may want to check The Usual Suspects:

1) Make sure your router is running current firmware. Some nasty bugs
have been fixed in routers that affect their reliability. (And if it's
two years old and has no upgrades.. your router maker sucks and doesn't
maintain their products... like mine.)

2) Use NetStumbler or similar tools to find what networks are near you:
if your neighbor starts his BitTorrent client and snarfs pr0n all
evening and is on the same channel, or even a 'nearby' channel, his
traffic will look like noise to your connection. Because the
frequency range of 802.11g is pretty narrow, there are really only 3
channels: 1,6 and 11. The rest overlap. Since most routers in North
America come set to channel 6, 1 or 11 may be less noisy.

3) Built into SC is a network bandwidth test... it just floods the SB
with data (which is ignored) and sees how much data it can send before
the network starts falling apart. It shouldn't fall apart at all, but
other issues (lots of metal or thick brick walls, microwaves, cordless
phones, etc) can affect it.

If you can run it wired, go for it: 802.11g is unlicensed airspace for
the simple reason that it sucks and businesses didn't want it. All
sorts of devices leak noise into that area (like Microwave ovens) and
since it's unregulated... more devices sit there making it worse.
(Think of what would happen if the FCC didn't tell radio stations what
frequency to use, just find something free in the AM band, and you'll
be fine! Which would often work, but at night when the atmosphere
reflects more radio waves back to earth... that station 500 miles away
would make your local station unlistenable.)

You are right that 'mac' is the executable, but it isn't readily

Don't know if this still works and how I would have to modify it to
offer transcoding to flac or mp3 since I have transcoded all I had in
ape to flac a whle ago. Since ape is lossless you won't suffer quality
loss if you do the same.

[slim] Can I see time in lower case?

2009-04-15 Thread chris.mason

Hmm, wasn't sure how to phrase the question for the thread...but this is
what I mean:

I am now the proud owner of a Boom. Its used a bedside clock/radio,
and it is very effective.

Pretty much all the time it displays the time (using the Date/Time
screensaver). I like the 12hr format, so it shows AM and PM...what I
would like is for AM and PM to appear in lower case. Just seems more
friendly somehow :-)

Is that possible? I can't see a way of setting that through SC.

[slim] Is my SB3 dead?

2009-04-15 Thread craigim

I've got a squeezebox 3 connected via ethernet cable to a Mac Mini. The
SqueezeCenter status reports the following information about my system:

Version: 7.3.2 - 24695 @ Tue Jan 20 07:06:41 PST 2009
Operating system: Mac OS X 10.5.6 (9G55) - EN - utf8
Platform Architecture: x86
Perl Version: 5.8.8 - darwin-thread-multi-2level
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-standard

I've been running without problems for years, and with the current
configuration for several months. Without changing anything about my
system (no updates, no hardware changes, I haven't even added any music
in a while), the audio suddenly changed to loud static. The display
works and claims that my track is playing (although the VU meter is
flat). If I try to play a track using SoftSqueeze on my PC, the audio
comes through fine.

Since SoftSqueeze is working, it seems to me that the server must be
fine. I looked at the log, and there aren't any playback errors. I'm
not sure where to start troubleshooting past the obvious software
checks.

Is my SB3 dead? Do I need to just reinstall the server? Is there
anything I can do to test the hardware? If it is a hardware problem,
is it likely something I can fix myself? Can it get repaired? Do I
have a $300 weather forecasting paperweight?

SN is there but the available services vary country by country.
It's important to understand that the services that SN SHOWS will still
depend on how your country setting is (so you will see the same ones you
had in the US if you don't change that), yet some (Pandora, Rhapsody,
Sirius) will simply not work.

You might have found if not a bug, then an inconsistency between
SqueezeCenter and SqueezeNetwork, Chris.

On -SqueezeNetwork-, the time displays as 6:50 pm - i.e. lower case

Re: [slim] Is my SB3 dead?

2009-04-15 Thread toby10

I'd try a full reboot first (computer, player, router).

If that doesn't fix it I'd try a Factory Reset:
Unplug power, press and hold down the add (+) button on the remote,
plug power back in (whilst continuing to hold down the add button)
+ = factory reset
Note: Factory Reset requires you re-load your players Firmware (hold
Brightness button after the player completely re-boots)

And if that doesn't work I'd try a Xilinx Chip Reset:
Unplug power, press and hold down the one (1) button on the remote,
plug power back in (whilst continuing to hold down the one button)
1 = Xilinx

EDIT: Or just read Millwood's referenced wiki. :)

Although I also generally have an aesthetic preference lowercase am/pm,
I do like the fact that I can look at a switched off SB and know
immediately whether it is connected to SC or SN. So it's not
necessarily an inconsistency if it is relaying useful information
about the state of the SB. The Boom even takes it a step further,
telling you when it is not connected to either SC or SN. In that case
the Boom's real time clock displays uppercase AM/PM, and also lights up
its front panel buttons.

These SB signals actually saved me a lot of running up and down the
stairs when I was sorting out problems getting my SC server to
automatically suspend to SN using the SrvrPowerCtrl plugin. Now it
serves as an easy confirmation that the plugin and the server are doing
what they are supposed to do.

I always figured that was a feature. It's an easy way for the observant
user to determine whether the Squeezebox is on SN or a local server.

If you're using Mac OS or Linux/Unix, you can edit a .pm file
(Slim/Utils/DateTime.pm) to add a lowercase time format. On Windows
you'd need to switch to ActiveState's interpreter or rebuild, I think.

[slim] Recent Re-buffering problem

2009-04-15 Thread wolster

I am used to my SB3 petulently giving way to the microwave occassionaly
but, in the last few days, with no microwave on, the music keeps
stopping. The display says re-buffering and shows the growing
percentage. Music resumes and then stops again. It is 'almost' making
me want to go back to CDs. The worst time is when you are demonstrating
the remarkable SB3 to friends, only to see it stutter and stop yet
again. Occassionaly I can fix it bt removing the power cord from the
back and re-booting but the problem inevitably returns.
Can anyone assist with a fix for this?
I am using a Belkin wireless router modem based on the 802.11n draft-
about 6 months old. It is in an upstairs bedroom with only a wooden
mezzanine floor to transmit through.I also have the latest release
squeezecenter software (not beta).
Thanks in anticipation of a flood of brilliant solutions.

Cheers

[slim] Getting Album artist via CLI

If I want to get the artist for an album and I have the album id, what
is the best way to get the artist for that album (and other info like

I could use the albums command with the right tags, but that seems very
wasteful in terms of the amount of data that would be sent from the

I could use songinfo and restrict to an album id and get the artist,

Re: [slim] Recent Re-buffering problem

2009-04-15 Thread MeSue

Well, I'll just throw this out there because it just goes to show that
really weird stuff can happen with wireless networking. A few weeks ago
I started having a problem where my entire network would go down every
time SC was doing something resource intensive (scanning new music,
mostly). Around the same time, my Boom in the kitchen started stopping
constantly. It got to where I could not get through one full song
without it stopping--and this is with MP3 so it's not a lot of
bandwidth. Every time it stopped, I noticed that the entire network was
going down for several minutes. But it only happened with the kitchen
player and not my other players.

To troubleshoot, I swapped in a different router temporarily (after
trying it wired and still having trouble). All the problems went away
with the other router, but that was with no security. So I went back to
my original router but turned off security. Everything worked fine.
Well, I wanted to keep my router but didn't want to run with no
security, so I changed the security from WPA Personal to WPA / WPA2
Personal. I don't even know what that means, but everything has been
working fine ever since with no more network outages and no Boom
stuttering.

The security settings had not been touched in over a year--it just went
haywire out of the blue like that. Can I say haywire when it's wireless?
