That's like asking "how long is a piece of string?" Since what you mean by "too much" is obviously nothing more than "more than I think it should" nobody can dispute that; you're free to think whatever you like. But your claim that a low-end PC should be the price point of reference is simply silly. The SB isn't a PC, and isn't intended to be. No bottom-end PC is going to produce the sound that the SB does. The point that a PC "can do more" than the SB is also silly. A cheap toaster can do things neither the SB nor the PC can do, but so what? I have dremel tool that can do lots of different things, and it cost less than the SB or a PC. But I don't base my notion of the value of either of those around the cost of a dremel tool. Ultimately, the concept of "costs too much" is nothing more than a personal opinion of the value of an item. If you're willing to pay the price for it, then by definition it doesn't cost too much. If you're not willing to pay the price, then it costs too much. That's the only definition of "too much" that has any meaning. Any attempt to discuss whether something "costs too much" in any other terms is sheer amphigory. -- Dogberry2 Dogberry2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18883 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64207 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

make sure that the external HD (wherever it is) is mounted properly to the OS *before* SqueezeCenter starts, otherwise I think SC will remove the database and consider the music "gone". [slim] Keep having to rescan library
First I should say that I have been using my SB2 for several years, and in several configurations. I am not a rooky. My current configuration is an Asus EEE running XP Pro with SqueezeCenter and my library is on a NAS. The NAS and the SB are connected via ethernet and the Asus is wireless. When everything is working I am very happy with it. It is close to exactly what I want. But for some reason with this setup I lose my library every once in awhile. When this happens everything seems normal except when I press Play nothing happens. The SB says NOW PLAYING, I can create on my computer a playlist. All my music is listed in SC but nothing happens. The only solution I have found is to clear out and completely rescan my library. The last two times I acutally had to retype the location of the library into SC, though the correct location was already in the box. Since it takes over half an hour to do all this, this is obviously not acceptable. When I had an HDD containing my library connected directly to my laptop I did not have this problem. I had plenty of other problems, but not this one. Anyone have any ideas? Please don't suggest I buy anything. I have spent hundreds of dollars and countless hours trying to create a robust SB system. I have sworn off spending even one more penny until the system works. Thanks or any help you may have. -- regalma1 regalma1's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6658 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64265 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Have you factored in a operating system, and software? What about a display? Please. A PC is far more expensive than a Squeezebox. I've got a few computers, and use a HTPC but for music the Squeezebox clearly wins in cost, usability & flexability. Try and build a fully working PC for £165, zero noise, low power, with large VFD, operating system, plugin for VFD. IR remote control. A Mac Mini may come closest, but you still need VFD, remote control, and VFD plugin/itunes support. -- badbob badbob's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7358 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64207 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Audiobooks UI Enhancement Request
I've not added an enhancement request to Bugzilla yet, I thought I'd try to get some comments first. After reading the wiki regarding the NewSchema, it looks encouraging. I'm assuming displaying audiobooks separately isn't a trivial change to the way SC works, and introducing a method of bookmarking (saving the playlist/track/position in track) would require quite a bit of effort. As with all enhancement requests, as the proposer I think it's a great idea, but the majority of other uses might have a different view. Re: [slim] Comparison between iPeng and Controller?
Apart from the player functionality, the other advantage the Controller has is its hardware buttons for pause, track skip etc However in practice they aren't as much of an advantage as you might think. 50% of the time that I pick up the Controller it has been idle long enough to go to sleep, which means it takes 10 seconds or so to wake up before I can use the hardware buttons. I can turn on my iPhone and launch iPeng in less time than it takes the Controller to wake. Re: [slim] Comparison between iPeng and Controller?
No, the iPod is much faster with long lists because you can flick to scroll quicker. There's also an alphabet list on the side you can use to jump to parts of the list (example at http://webdiary.com/i/content/ipeng2.jpg). On the Controller, the more you spin the wheel the faster it scrolls, but it does have a tendency to overshoot. Well, of course if you let us all have a bash at 0.94 then we can all provide feedback. ;-) There seems little point reporting any more bugs when you may have already addressed many of them. One quick one. If I leave 0.92 running for a long period of time, it eventually just dies/exits. Could this be the memory problem that has already been reported? Crutchfield has the Transporter at 10% off, a free Controller and free shipping. Pretty nice deal and the Transporter probably ought to come with the SBC anyway. Price good through 6/20/09. Re: [slim] SB far too expensive?

It may be able to do a variety of things being a PC and not a dedicated audio device (although for most them you'd need to purchase a display, which could easily add another £100) but the phrase is - 'Jack of all trades, master of none'. You seem to be of the opinion that you don't use/need the VFD for the most part, and prefer to use your laptop as an interface. Fine, then I draw your attention again to the fact that the SB Receiver is only £85, so the SFF being cheaper, whatever way you look at it, is simply not true. -- rickwookie rickwookie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6397 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64207 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Comparison between iPeng and Controller?
I guess I'll wait for today's announcements from Apple and take it from there. I would have thought that for long lists, scrolling with a wheel (as with the Controller) would have been easier/faster. -- gorman gorman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64145 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] last.fm - a few questions
1. No - this is not normal behaviour. I don't use Vista, but this may be to do with the user account that Squeezecenter is running under. Have a search of the forums or contact supp...@slimdevices.com if you can't get this sorted. 2. See http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64018&highlight=last.fm for the best explanation I can give. There are a good few other threads on the forums which discuss this. 3. What configuring do you need help with? If you're using the official plugin, it's a question of entering your account details in Squeezecenter and then in Squeezenetwork (and authorising your account to access Last.fm) then everything is set up - no further configuration required. -- Siduhe Who am I on 'LAST.FM' (http://www.last.fm/user/siduhe)? "-Siduhe Loved Tracks radio got the thumbs up. Feedback included: yeah, it's good... got the odd dodgy track tho...-" (c) 'ModelCitizen' (http://www.last.fm/user/Modelcitizen) Oh yeah, I'm giving 'Twitter' (http://twitter.com/Siduhe) a try - and surprising myself how many interesting people are out there...
