Re: [slim] Ultimate server for SqueezeCenter?

2009-07-08 Thread matthijskoopmans

I would add the following:

1. some way of editing tags after ripping, this would have to be
remotely via a web interface.
2. MusicBrainz integration for tags (FreeDB is dreadful)
3. MusicIP installed, and configurable via web interface to analyse the
library
4. web interface to upload files to the vortexbox. This is more than
just a file drop, it will invoke a rescan of the music library as well.
5. after ripping the CD, the album art is retrieved and added to the
folder. (my preference would be to embed the album art in the tag, but
that makes maintenance more difficult - squeezecenter find album art
works with the cover.jpg in the directory, and does not update embedded
art)

Re: [slim] 18 hrs for wipe rescan - Normal?

2009-07-08 Thread vagskal

Thanks all for the hints.

This is what I did:

1. Installed the latest 7.3.4. beta (r27392).

2. Switched usb port for the usb disc containing the bulk of the music
files and removed on usb thing that I do not use. - I also checked that
the usb disc did not need defragmentation.

3. Disabled MusicIP.

4. In CustomScan I set all custom scans to Manual, i.e. disabled them.

5. I considered to not cache the album artwork, but decided to keep the
caching since I enjoy my album artwork. (My album artwork is often very
large - 1400x1400 or so - and perhaps the resampling is taken a long
time?)

6. Restarted the PC.

7. I changed my music folder from an unc path to a local path (but
first I did the same for the shortcut in the music folder). That
triggered a wipe and rescan.

The rescan is under way now and I will report the result when it has
finished...

*Laz*, the new release will work with iTunes, just make sure to drop

Hi chp,

Thanks for the update and my apologies for the delay in my reply - I
suspect I'm on the opposite side of the world to you.

Things are looking better now but not quite there. I now get the blue
icon for about half a second before it vanishes again (faster than I get
my mouse down for a hover over).

I suspect my problem is that my copy of iTunes takes a very long time
to fire up - of the order 3 to 10 seconds (I keep my library files on a
network drive and thanks to Apples monolithic approach, I'm loading
about 20 MB across the network). Is there any chance you can make the
delay a configuration variable in the ini file so that I can experiment
with this a bit further.

The other possibility is that I'm not set up for 44.1kHz output - am I
correct in assuming that I need to do this in the Quicktime Control
panel? I currently have all of my sound devices set to 44.1kHz 16 bit
stereo.

I also have a quick suggestion for an interface option in the future. I
really like the ability to mute the local output - it would be even more
awesome if you could add a click on the icon option to select between
three options of: Play local (pass through?), Stream, Play local and
Stream.

Finally, I presume you aware that this code is likely to give Apple
corporate types heartburn - they do so like their Bonjour solution with
tie in to iTunes and Airport Express.

Thanks again for the good work.

Thanks mortslim, I've been wondering where this situation was at.

What is not clear, and what I fear, is that this only resolves the
issue for the bigger streaming operators and the smaller operators may
still end up getting pushed out of the market. :(

I love the big boys in the market (Pandora, Slacker, Sky, DI, RadioIO,

from small single stream operators that may still get the boot. :(

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2009-07-08 Thread f948lan

Firstly, thanks for the continued efforts in maintaining squeezeslave.

I've just upgraded to 0.9 and can no longer play FLAC files. MP3 is
fine. My current work-around is to enforce bitrate limiting to force an
MP3 transcode on the server, but that rather defeats the object of
having FLAC files in the first place!

The windows binary download works fine. But on Linux (gentoo) it seg
faults. I'm running linux26-alsa. I've tried with and without the

I've also tried a new MAC address (and using the same mac that worked
on the windows version - just in case!).

Re: [slim] need help in displaying song titles

2009-07-08 Thread Declan Moriarty

Yes you can display song titles only rather than going into Music
Library-Album route.

You have to go into squeezecenter on the PC and goto Settings then
Player and Basic Settings and Menus.

This will bring up the Menu Customisation page. There is a list of
items in the Home Menu at the top of the page. There is a list of
Inactive Menu Items lower down the page. One of these is Songs.
Select this and click the Add button. The Songs entry will now appear
in the Home Menu. This will present a list of all the songs in your
music library. Note it lists all the track 1's then the 2's etc. It
dosn't do it is Album order!

Re: [slim] Ultimate server for SqueezeCenter?

2009-07-08 Thread aubuti

I think there are many ultimate servers for SBS (the new SC). You've
hit the different things that different users will consider the most
important: noise, power consumption, capacity, size, boxes that look
good, etc. So I agree with iPhone that you would need to look at a
*lineup *of variations on the appliance.

This also fits with my hidden agenda, which is to persuade you to
provide more information about what is inside each box. Your product
pages on vortexbox.org, vortexbox.com, and amazon.com don't provide
basic information such as processor, RAM, sound card, etc. You appear to
be targeting users who want easy solutions, and that's great, but you
can still have a separate Specs page with all the gory hardware details.
You have provided some of that information in this forum, and it sounds
like you have a real winner. But I still hesitate to recommend it to
friends because too much is unknown, so it's not immediately clear why
it's worth US$200 more than the MSI box on which it seems to be based.

I basically like what you have now, although I doubt I'd ever use the
optical drive.

list, and some way to tell for sure who those poeple are. it doesn't
feel like the forums are 'managed' with a great deal of thought, just
something that one of the Logitech guys has to do along with a multitude
of other stuff.

I would like to see some mods applied to the standard vB install and
some consistency to the options for the different sub board (for
example, below this reply there are no smilies, below the last reply I
made there was). As the forums have grown, no-one has check to make sure
options are the same between the new aditions and existing boards.

I like the idea of having a range of products as well. I'm trying to
keep the range as narrow as possible so as not to confuse new buyers
with to many options.

I did post a spec sheet a few days ago.

http://vortexbox.org/buy/vortexbox-appliance-datasheet/

And as you can see with a WD Green hard drive (not a cheap loud one)
and a Dual layer DVD burn drive plus shipping on all the parts you could
barely build a VortexBox for the price we are selling it at.

Re: [slim] Play music files from outside music library ?

2009-07-08 Thread Declan Moriarty

You can do this. Make a symbolic link to the desktop in your music
directory. on the comand line you can use the ln -s command:-

ln -s desktop directory music directory/desktop

Then go into squeezecenter and check if it is seeing it. Go to Music
Library and select the Music Folder option. The contents of the Music
Folder should be displayed. Then look for your Desktop symbolic link.
Click this and you should see the contents of the desktop. Then verify
this on your player.

 Hi cph!

I noticed that the info regarding played songs are transmitted twice to
last.fm after upgrading to the 090707-build (one from SC and one from
 Spotify?).

One solution is of cause to disable the scrobbling to
last.fm-function in Spotify manually but I prefer not to do that. Any
 suggestions on what to do?

1. I have the same symptom (double entries on Last.fm), and a restart
of Spotify did not cure it.

2. The album artwork size and crop are not perfect yet, see attached
image from iPeng. I tried to change the values in the .ini file, but did
not understand how I should do. (The image shows the display with the
default values.)

3. Sometimes the advertisements are played so fast that they are
intelligible (perhaps because they are not 44.1kHz?). I know that the
fix for this is to upgrade to Spotify premium, but I just wanted to let
you know because the fast playback of the advertisements is even more
annoying than hearing them at normal speed.

4. I think the stream from Spotify for non premium users is around
160kbps. Are there any benefits in sound quality with a higher bitrate
than that set in DSBridge, where the default now is 320kbps?

BTW: Thanks for a very useful and simple utility! Great job!

3. This is perfect, since the music is interrupted for HALF THE TIME!
:)

4. YES! Decoding the 160kbps ogg-stream from Spotify and then encode it
using 160kps mp3 makes the sound quality worse. Both because transoding
from lossless to lossless loses even more quality by the conversion
itself, and because 160kbps ogg is better than 160kpbs mp3. After
decompression, you should transfer it as lossless as possible. And
320kpbs mp3 is almost lossless.

3. I am afraid not, the time for interruption of the playback of the
music seems to be the same because what is gained in time by the fast
playback of the advertisement is replaced by silence (which you really
need since the fast playback that occurs sometimes is really
disturbing...). I think I will have to upgrade.

4. Thanks for the explanation!

3. Ah! I'm just trying out the new version which doesn't have the
problem with the buffer growing larger. This was actually a feature in
the sense that the buffer could then be used to play the commercial
twice as fast without any interruption of the music! :)
So after a commercial spot my buffer decreased with 5-15 seconds, but
no interruption of playback.

It is quite simple on Windows:

1. Close Spotify (right click on the Spotify tray icon and select
Exit).

2. Find your Spotify folder (where spotify.exe is). It is usually under
C:/Program/Spotify/.

3. Download DSBridge from
http://dsbridge.googlecode.com/files/dsbridge-20090707-bin.zip. Put the
files DSound.dll and dsbridge.ini in your Spotify folder.

4. Find on the Internet the file lame_enc.dll, preferably v. 3.98.2
(hint: http://www.free-codecs.com/Lame_Encoder_download.htm). Put the
file lame_enc.dll in your Spotify folder.

5. Start Spotify and play something. You will notice a new tray icon.

6. Go to your web browser and open SqueezeCenter (you will need a
computer running SqueezeCenter to use DSBridge, I think). Go to
Favourites and choose Edit. Choose New Favourite and type a name for the
favourite (i.e. Spotify). If you are running Spotify on the same PC as
SqueezeCenter: Type http://localhost:8124/; as the url for your new
favourite. - If you are running SqueezeCenter and Spotify on separate
machines on a local network, you will have to find the IP address (on
your local network, something like 192.168.) of the machine running
Spotify and type that instead of localhost.

7. Play the new Spotify favourite, via the web interface or iPeng,
and whatever is playing on Spotify will play on your SB3.

Good luck!

[slim] SB2 Randomly comes on

2009-07-08 Thread GraemeHarrison

I run a boom, a duet, 3 x SB3's and a SB2. The SB2 is used in the
bedroom with a Tivoli radio as an alarm clock during the week (no alarms
at weekend).

The SB2 - and only the SB2, none of the other units ever do this -
randomly starts playing music. The display still shows off. To kill the
music you have to turn the player on and off again - just turning it off
doesn't work.

This happens about once every 2-3 days whether an alarm is set or not.
So far it's only happened once during the night, mostly it comes on
during the day. I'm running latest release software under OX10.5.7.

Any clues anyone?

Cheers
Graeme

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-07-08 Thread kidstypike

Still having problems with buffering. All seems fine for the first
track, showing 0.0/2.5 on the Boom display, immediately it changes to
the next track, the right hand value climbs to 10.0, then the left-hand
value climbs to 78.6 (never higher), at this point it starts to skip.
All latest DSBridge files installed. Cover art metadata perfect.

Any pointers?

Question: should the forum be reorganized?

- leave them as they are
- reorganize and recategorize x months of existing posts
- reorganize and do not recategorize any existing posts

funkstar;438971 Wrote:
I don't have much of an opinion of re-organising the forums (I use New

But I do sometimes think we need a more defined Administrator/moderator
list, and some way to tell for sure who those poeple are. it doesn't
feel like the forums are 'managed' with a great deal of thought, just
something that one of the Logitech guys has to do along with a multitude
 of other stuff.

I would like to see some mods applied to the standard vB install and
some consistency to the options for the different sub board (for
example, below this reply there are no smilies, below the last reply I
made there was). As the forums have grown, no-one has check to make sure
options are the same between the new aditions and existing boards.

WHAT? Go to the main page, scroll down, click on 'View Forum Leaders'

[slim] Is it safe to keep an SB3 in stand-by all the time?

2009-07-08 Thread Declan Moriarty

I have a second hand SqueezeBox 3 that came with a UNIFIVE power supply
that gave up the ghost. I replaced it with the more modern replacement
power supply whitch is far better! It doesn't get nearly as hot!
However the power supply does get warm but not overly so. The
squeezebox gets warm.

Should I unplug it when not in use?

Some people say they see red lines in the display. This isn't
happening to mine yet. Does keeping it on (in stand by) make this more
likely?

Thank you in advance.

Both sides of this dispute sorely need a big victory of some sort, as

What would appear to be a practical compromise gives each only a small

The major problems remain.

Goodsounds;437725 Wrote:
I noticed something odd on the Who's Online page.

The usual display opposite the names will be something like Viewing
Thread - Need Help with Installation or Viewing Forum - General
Discussion. But sometimes it will just say Viewing Thread or Viewing
Forum with no further info. When I've seen this phenomenon, it has
typically been for entries of long-time and active users (you know the
ones I mean) and company employees.

I could imagine this might be the case if someone had signed in to the
forum system, but was viewing a forum that was blocked to the general
audience. Like, a forum for beta testers.

Or, maybe there's a way to block the display. Or, maybe it's a bug. Or,
 maybe I'm just imagining this.

Well I'll play and take a SWAG at it. It probably means just what it
says. IE they are at the top of the Forum and haven't picked where they
want to go yet so the Forum can't tag them yet. Or they were in the
Forum and walked away and have timed out but the web browser is still
open but since they are not active, the Forum can't again tell what
section they are in.

Or they are employees, and the employees Do have a private discussion
area (complete speculation on my part as I have no idea, just saying
could be) for company business. Or they are admin/moderators and they
are moderating.

Or maybe it is odd behavior or the Forum just hasn't updated at that
moment you looked to drill down to exactly where they are at that
exact moment so it puts in a wildcard because the Forum knows that
nothing just will not do.

The guy that wrote the Forum software probably couldn't answer this
question, but again that's guessing also.

Or as Pippin said they are in the passworded secret Transporter or Sean
Adams forum sections!

[slim] Weird Squeezebox Network Interference

2009-07-08 Thread dhull

Short Version:
Wireless Squeezebox 3, when connected to audio system that includes
DirecTivo receiver will degrade internet download performace to dial up
speeds. The audio system can be powered down and the problem persists.
Disconnect the satellite dishes and the problem vanishes!

Details:
Internet connection is att DSL via Actiontec GT724WGR gateway.
Main computer is connected via ethernet.
Download speed measured by speakeasy.net network speed test.
Problem is reproducable at will, cleared up by disconnecting either the
stereo audio cable from the Squeezebox or the satellite dishes from the
DirecTivo. It doesn't matter if the various A/V items are powered down.
The problem will persist as long as the Squeezebox is powered up.

Question:
Does anyone have any ideas how to solve this? I thought it might be
possible to put a filter between the Squeezebox and the audio amp. What
kind? What else could be done or investigated to solve the problem?
I have no other evidence that there is anything wrong with the
Squeezebox.

Yes. Its meant to stay on which is why it doesn't have a power switch!

Re: [slim] Weird Squeezebox Network Interference

2009-07-08 Thread tcutting

Don't know if it's any help, but it reminds me of a common source of
ground buzz. When I first interconnected stereo receiver and
television, I would get irritating buzz. The buzz would disappear when
the cable coax connection was disconnected. Finally solved it with a
DC Block on the cable connection. It seems a ground loop was setup
between the ground path associated with the cable TV connection and the
rest of the system. A similar situation may be injecting enough noise
into your network that it has to throttle back the speeds... just a
thought, but wouldn't know how to correct it - maybe a similar DC Block
is available for your Satellite cable?

Hrm, maybe I shouldn't have said I. I don't personally own the
empegbbs, but I used to frequent it often. Sadly, there isn't much left
for me on the empeg board (besides the nice people).

I still have my mk2 in my car and it will probably get retired with
that car.

Re: [slim] some relief for internet radio in US

2009-07-08 Thread Goodsounds

The music industry wouldn't be chasing these crumbs so vigorously if
their business model hadn't imploded. It's in everyone's interest for
that to get fixed somehow. What's there now isn't healthy for anyone
concerned, musicians or fans.

And the web sites wouldn't be fighting so hard about royalties if they
had any revenue to speak of. Some are just fighting to postpone ultimate
oblivion. Your business benefits from them being successful, many
customers buy your products because of the availability of internet
music.

They're odd bedfellows, with divergent challenges and interests yet
they need each other.

I wonder what it says you're looking at if you have 5 browser tabs all

only know about the most recently loaded page.

Good point Sue. I usually have at least 2 if not 3 Forum tabs open at
one time.

I'm not that 'Paranoid' at least not yet. ;=} Now what are you guys
typing about me while I type this post? Guess I need to open another Tab
and hit New Posts real quick!

I can say one thing from personal experience in communicating with
employees and how I have been treated on the Forum, and that that is
fair and with respect going both directions. Can't put a finger on it
and don't really care to (is it the small company or that they work in
an open source environment which fosters working together instead of
against or in secret, probably some of both). The people are just good
people and there is really no other way to say it.

And that also goes for the people on this Community Forum. Sure we
disagree at times and other times completely agree, but in the end I
think it comes down to the music and how a Slim Device makes that more
enjoyable.
