Re: [slim] What are people using for Bathroom control ?

2009-07-31 Thread NeilT

The wall mounted link above is very smart and the idea for news
scrolling is an extra great addition but not sure how he controls this.
There is no details on remote, why do you say the SB classic would be
easier to waterproof control.

This installation uses the original Squeezebox, which is similar to the
Squeezebox Classic internally. Both use a simple IR remote. I meant that
this remote would be easier to waterproof as its not touchscreen, or
there are waterproof universal remotes available as Chrisla mentioned.

If all you want to do is turn it on, why not set an alarm for the night
before in Squeezecenter? Then you'll be welcomed by music as you enter
the throne room!

Neil

[slim] Squeezebox 2 Case

2009-07-31 Thread agentsmith

I have had different Squeezeboxes including the Transporter. But my
first Squeezebox 2 is still amongst my favorite due to its low profile
form factor.

But for some reason the case has gone all sticky and gummy on me.

I cannot find a replacement case in the Slim accessories store. Does
anyone know where I can find replacement case or even case mod for the
SB2?

hey dsdreamer, thanks for the reply. I'm at work right now and don't
know what version of the server I'm running. I also live in a fairly
less populated area and don't suspect that there is much channel
contention -- but Netstumbler is a good suggestion.

I'll also say that maybe stability is not the fundamental reason for
trying this. I'm sort of a tinker-er and like to reduce things to their
simplest elements.

I have a fairly good understanding of networking / IP.

From your note I surmise that it's possible to loginto the squeezebox

What model SB do you have? On all of them except for the SB Duet
Receiver (SBR) it's a simple matter of turning it on, holding down the
left arrow key on the infrared remote for about 5 seconds and scrolling
to the network setup. That's where you put in your various network
information, including specifying the static IP.

If you have an SBR then I'm pretty sure you need to use the Net::UDAP
tool. Do a search in these forums and you'll find the link and plenty of
other useful info.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-07-31 Thread lanierb

I'm not saying there isn't a real problem here. However, it still seems
like the vast majority of people (me, for example) have not experienced
this problem at all, so I just want to remind people that nothing
changed in my system is not equivalent to nothing changed. Two
things come to mind: one is a change in wireless interference due to,
for example, neighbors' routers, new cell phone towers, a router
failing, etc. Another possibility is that the newer builds are slightly
more server intensive and those with weaker/overburdened servers are
starting to see issues.

Again, I'm not saying there isn't a problem for sure, but there seems
to be an assumption in this thread that there's something majorly wrong
with 7.3.3 and 7.3.4 so I wanted to point out that there is fairly
strong evidence against this assumption because most people (the silent
majority) seem to have no problems at all, or otherwise there would be a
deluge of complaints.

Re: [slim] Synching SB1 with SB2/SB3. Limits?

2009-07-31 Thread sander

I bought a used sb1 on craigslist and eventually gave up due to syncing
problems.

As I understand it the fundamental issue is whether your server stalls
at all. Squeezecenter is single threaded and any hiccup which would be
find for modern (sb2 type) players will hang up the Sb1.

For me it became to much to deal with and I was lucky enough to find
used SB3 on craigslist (for $5 more than the Sb1!) so I gave up.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience

2009-07-31 Thread timmorris

In my system the problem is limited to the Boom. I can play music for
days on the SB3 without it rebuffering connected to the same access
point. When the Boom eventually goes to rebuffering failed and locks
up. Then the signal strength drops from 98% to 12% on the server
information page. The SB3 maintains an average strength of 71%. I set up
a test playlist with 1600 tracks in it and it failed at the 243rd
track.

I uninstalled 7.4, deleted the cache log and prefs files from the
folder tree for both the 7.4 and 7.3.x versions of the server (they use
different folder paths), and reinstalled, and was able to repeat the
same issue.

I'll repeat the same experiment with 7.2.1 and see if it is an issue
with the Boom or the server.

I'm a semi-professional beta tester, since a Motorcycle accident
stopped me from working, current projects include

CalMAN ISF calibration beta since version 2.1 (software and hardware)
iPeng iPhone Squeezecentre controller application since the first
version
Radiance XD video processor since the first manufacturing batch
Content delivery application on iPhone for UK mobile phone service
provider (carrier).

I'm well versed in isolating and reproducing bugs and there does appear
to be an issue. In my case it might be the Boom in which case I'll be on
to Logitech support, but I suspect it is a firmware/software issue.

I use several other wireless devices, including streaming of video over
WiFi none of which have been affected, and as mentioned earlier in this
thread my property was built in 2002. Due to UK building regulations the
insulation is foil backed and I get NO mobile phone signal inside the
building, and my cordless and wireless devices get no signal outside. I
am fairly confident that there have been no environmental changes. Just
because you don't suffer from the issue doesn't mean it isn't there.
I'll do my best to isolate it, and when I do, I'll provide Logitech with
as much information as I'm able.

Tim

It sounds like somehow the sound driver is not reporting proper playback
information - this is what I rely on to rate limit the encoder. I'm not
seeing this on any of the machines I have tested with, but I can imagine
that there are plenty of lazy driver developers out there. :)

I'm testing a solution to this (tracking the timing information

Why not keep all three? You do have two bedrooms, and I assume a
kitchen, a living room (or are these together).
Do you have existing stereo(s)? If so, where?
I have my Boom currently in the kitchen, but would also like in the
bedroom. Plus, when I spend much time in the garage, I'll take it out
there.
Of all of those, if I needed to let one go, I would lose the Receiver
from the Duet, keep the Classic, the Boom and the Controller. It all
depends on what arrangements you have/how you could use them.

Re: [slim] Help me

2009-07-31 Thread maggior

I wouldn't drop it in the sink, put it in the oven (conventional or
microwave). It might not do well in the dishwasher either. :-).

Seriously though, it would do quite well in that environment. Many
people have them there. Mine are in kids bedrooms. If I hadn't already
had a Klipsch iPod speaker setup with line in (which my Duet is
connected to), I would have gotten a boom for the kitchen.

You can also get a mount for the Boom. I believe it will allow you go
mount it to a wall or under a counter.

I would just put it where it won't get hot, wet, or food splashed on
it.

Re: [slim] mp3 tagging problem

2009-07-31 Thread amcluesent

I checked all the id tags first

Probably a mixture of ID3v1/ID3v2/Vorbis tags. You need mp3tag to clean
tags, read the wiki.

Also, I find it helpful to set the COMPILATION tag so that
Squeezecenter isn't guessing.

Re: [slim] Help me

2009-07-31 Thread maggior

By Duet, do you mean the handheld controller? I'm assuming so since
you said you will sell your receiver.

The handheld controller (SBC) displays artwork, artist/title/album, and
a progress bar similar to what you would see on just about any mp3
player.

The receiver commonly sells for $150 brand new. If you never used it,
you could probably get $140 for it on Ebay.

Feels similar to the snooze bar or knob on the Boom. Won't be the same

Well the SB1 has a tiny buffer, so, yes, if there are interference
problems on a wireless network, or large cpu/disk spikes on the machine
running SC, the SB1 would be much more likely to 'stall' than a later
model with more memory devoted to buffering.

Not really a sync issue, though: those sorts of dropouts would be more
likely on an SB1 even if it was the sole player.

Re: [slim] mp3 tagging problem

2009-07-31 Thread moley6knipe

I guess restoring the files from your backup isn't an option?

If so, you'll have to do it the hard way. Post on the mp3tag forums
for advice on how to use bits of your filename/folder structure to tag
your fiels, if that applies.

e.g. my folders are organised artist\album\track number-title.m4a
Queen\News of the world\01-we will rock you.m4a so I could extract that
info to create new tags.

mp3tag can also look up tags from the web, again details on mp3tag
forum.

And back your files up! Number one rule in big tagging operations.

to be an assumption in this thread that there's something majorly wrong
with 7.3.3 and 7.3.4 so I wanted to point out that there is fairly
strong evidence against this assumption because most people (the silent
majority) seem to have no problems at all, or otherwise there would be a
 deluge of complaints.

IMHO, the absence of complaints is not sufficient evidence to conclude
there is no problem. I'd agree that the silent majority probably
aren't affected, but then the majority of users probably don't stream
FLAC, and the problem being discussed here is isolated to high bitrate
files.

I think it's pointless to debate if there are sufficient incidences to
warrant action; there is a bug report, and if enough people vote for it
then attention will be paid. So far, there are only 5 votes, and that
just ain't enough to get the issue addressed. Eventually, some folks
like me will stop tilting against this particular windmill and spend the
$$$s to wire the house with CAT5...major bucks in my case.

Incorrect. A bug report does not need to get votes to get addressed.
It's just one way that paid Logitech coders and volunteer coders may
assess a bug's credibility and/or severity.

Plenty of people stream FLAC all the time to a Boom (myself included)
over wireless. The OP's problem is surely real, but to leap to the
assumption that it is a firmware issue is better left to people who
have actually worked with the firmware.

[slim] Poor Quality Internet

2009-07-31 Thread ajkidle

I like to bring my Boom and SBR with me when we visit the parents,
problem is their high speed internet isn't very fast or reliable.
Both Rhapsody and Pandora require re-buffering frequently enough to make
them unlistenable for more than a song or so. I've connected the Boom
via ethernet (to rule out flaky WiFi issues,) confirmed there are no
other devices eating up bandwidth, and still have problems with both
Pandora and Rhapsody. To me, this indicates poor internet service.
This same setup works fine at my house, on an 18 Mbps connection.

When I go to speedtest.net, the numbers vary from test-to-test, but I
seem to generally get:
Ping = 70 - 100 ms (although once it came back at 1200 ms)
Download = 0.7 - 0.9 Mbps
Upload = 0.12 Mbps

So my questions:
- Is it unreasonable to expect to maintain a 192 kbps stream on such a
connection?
- How does the ping latency come into play?
- Is there anything I can do from my end, without complaining to the
ISP?

I've tried increasing the Radio Station Buffer in SqueezeCenter, but
it seems to have no effect. It doesn't even seem to buffer the amount I
set it to. (Example, I can set it to buffer 15 seconds, and still
experience 2 drop outs in a 10 second span of time.)

Any ideas or suggestions for improving this are much appreciated.
(BTW, streaming local stuff works fine.)

Thanks,
Andy

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2009-07-31 Thread joeinbend

Hi all,
I recently started using SqueezeBox, and am not able to get the
SlimControl to connect to my server. Here's my setup:

Squeezebox Server 7.3.3 is running on Ubuntu Server 8.04. Clients are
all the SoftSqueeze Java-based client, and they are working correctly. I
have 3 PC's successfully sync'ed together.

For my remote, I am using an IPAQ hx2795b with Windows Mobile 5.0 (OS
5.1.1702 build 14366.1.0.1). I have the newest version of the remote
software. I am able to put in the IP of my server, hit Test, and it says
that it successfully sees my server. When I am at the main screen, the
top status bar just says Connecting to (ip of my server) indefinitely.
The green connection icon to its' right is lit.

Any suggestions on what I can try to get it going?

Thanks!
