Audacity will convert ALAC to AIFF. It's free. It's also a very good

Well, it sometimes took multiple tries but I was finally able to re-

Thanks to all for your responses.

[slim] MP3Tunes Problem

2009-10-16 Thread lilypuddles

Hi,
In the middle of playing some music, I lost access to my MP3Tunes music
locker last night using my Squeezebox Duet. I get the following message
on the Duet controller;

500 Cannot connect to us.mp3.tunes.com:80 (connect : timeout)

I can connect to my music locker using my PC and my internet browser. I
can also connect to all my other squeezebox applications using my Duet
remote. Has this happened to anybody else or does anyone have a solution
to this connection issue?

Thanks!

I found a bug that was causing a problem writing the settings files for
squeezeplay. I'm going to put the fix in later today and that should
help with home menu settings and it seems to also help with the
connection problems, at least it has for the ones I've been seeing for
 windows builds of SP.

Try out tomorrow's 7.4 Windows Executable.

[slim] Worst customer service ever!

2009-10-16 Thread Altec

First. I am sure that there are a lot of hard working people at
Logitech, trying to make great products - this is not meant for them.

I bought the duet and it can't connect to mysqueezebox.com when my
computer is off (all ports are open, it can ping and even see the ip
address for mysqueezebox.com but the controller says that I am not
registered).

Called Logitech support here in Denmark and they apparently hung up on
me after 25 min. (and no I am not one of those idiots who rants at
people who is trying to help me). They never cared to call back although
they asked for both my phone number and my email address. Called them
again and was now treated in a most unprofessional rude way - he even
yelled at me because I told him that I already tried the thing he was
suggesting close to 30 times (resetting the unit). Guess what - it
didn't solve the problem doing that again.

Found this forum and someone from Logitech posted that I could PM him
if I had problems with the duet. Well he doesn't allow PM. so I
found another Logitech person who did but he doesn't read his mail
(although his account shows recent activity).

Tries to send a mail to the European customer support but During the
next several days, Logitech will be transitioning our customer support
e-mail system. Email support will not be available from August 30 until
October 12. It is now October 16 and same message!!! How can it take
more than two weeks to transitioning their customer support e-mail
system - isn't that something other companies does doing the night or
within a few days???

Got an email from the Danish support claiming that they haven't heard
from me within 168 hours since they send me an answer so they changed
the status to SOLVED!!?? (they never send me any answer and I have only
contacted them via phone). I replied that my problem wasn't solved and
got a reply that an account was created?? I asked them how this account
was going to help me and got a mail We have received your question. You
will get an answer within 72 hours - 4 days later (96 hours) and
nothing! Ironic enough they send me another mail at the same time
claiming how much they care about me and that they want to know how my
experience with customer service has been! Well now you know!!

This is INSANE!!! Stop wasting my time Logitech, my time is worth
something. I have bought so many of your product through the years but
this experience has changed my view on your company. My dream of buying
both the Squeezebox Radio and Touch or any other product from Logitech
has probably ended.

I am going to return the Duet if I don't get some response from someone
from Logitech very soon.

Be careful... we have ridiculous legislation here in the UK, too.

It wouldn't surprise me if HMRC (for our non-UK friends, that stands
for Her Majesty's Revenue Customs - our equivalent of the Internal
Revenue) defined something like a beta test SB Touch provided in

Don't get me wrong; I think it's great that we now have the Squeezebox
Radio and Touch to play with or to replace our old but yet beloved

But will the number of players affect the average quality on released
versions of the Squeezebox Server software? I mean; many players equals
many if statements to be handled by the software development team as
the players' hardware are different.. I wonder; Is the 'Logitech
Squeezebox' software development team staffed and managed accordingly?

PS. And this is important: So far I am VERY IMPRESSED by the quality of
both the hardware and software products from Slimdevices and now
'Logitech Squeezebox'. I think the success is very much related to the
strong enthusiasm of the freaks who spend a lot of free time
developing and roaming these forums! So THANK YOU ALL! You know; I just
 LOVE these products!!

 RonHatl
If you're concerned about the proliferation of players and the
complexity of the software (and implicitly, support for legacy players),
consider a couple of the alternatives:

*1. Don't introduce new products:* this is commercial suicide,
especially considering Moore's Law. As good as the existing products
are, they need new products not only for the marketing buzz they create,
but also to take advantage of adding greater capabilities at the same or
lower price point.

*2. Introduce new products, and stop supporting old hardware:* This is
what a lot of companies do, and something that Slim Devices never did
and Logitech has done as little as possible (eg, TinySC on the SB Touch
won't support SliMP3 or SB1 players). What existing SB user is going to
want to add a new device if it can't sync or interoperate with existing
gear? Probably not many, and the alternative of replacing everything is
usually very unattractive.

As pski pointed out, much of the new code -- although far from all --
goes into the player firmware, not the server software. And in some
cases, the new products help make the old products better, with the most
obvious case in point being the SB Controller. It was the first device
based on SqueezeOS, and now the Radio and Touch are the 2nd and 3rd. A
lot of the development effort on the Radio and Touch is showing payoffs
on the SBC.

Interesting.
So what value do you put on a beta SB Touch or radio? Certinaly not the
MSRP, else Logitech would have just put them out to market without beta
testing.

If HMRC or the IRS really want to spend their time trying to chase
people for a benefit in kind tax charge on a barely working product,
that - when it does work - is about £150 (SBR) then they really do have
far too much time on their hands.

SBR: £150
BIK tax would be based on the cost for Logitech to provide it? £50
taxed @ 20% = £10

Re: [slim] Hardware Beta Testers Take Note

2009-10-16 Thread Goodsounds

The FTC rules seems reasonable in intent to me. A reader should be able
to expect that reviews and comments are independent and without bias.
If something of value has been conveyed, all this requires is
disclosure. Then come to your own conclusion. Even newspapers often
indicate for restaurant reviews, for example, that they pay for the
meals being reviewed.

The $600 rule is for payers to report payments to the IRS. Recipients

they just receive no report on amounts below $600 from any one payer.

 posted a great
review on a site like Amazon, without making it clear that he'd been
provided the hardware by Logitech without paying for it, would be
leaving himself open to the FTC fine.

The two disturbing things I see in this are:

1) The wording in the FTC policy document makes frequent use of phrases
like will be determined on a case-by-case basis, leaving the door wide
open. In effect they're saying we aren't going to set any
clearly-defined rules or tell you exactly what is and isn't allowed, but
if you break the rules, we'll nail you.

2) This isn't legislation as the term is understood in the U.S. It
isn't a law passed by Congress. It's just a bureaucratic policy, with
the bureaucrats setting the rules very vaguely, and then making
themselves the arbiters of what those rules are and who is guilty of
breaking them.

Pat may be right that a particular case, if it were challenged and
taken to court, might be overturned, and perhaps the FTC would be forced
to make the rules more definite and precise, and be forbidden from
deciding on fines on a case-by-case basis. But the poor schmuck who
had to go to the trouble of taking it to court would be in for a whole
lot of hassle, and legal costs, probably amounting to more than the fine
itself. Which is how bureaucrats get away with this kind of thing: they
make it cost more to fight it than to just give in and pay it.

Re: [slim] 7.4.# and multiple track listing

2009-10-16 Thread bobkoure

On the drive that has multiple listings - is your music as separate
tracks plus a CUE file? Are there M3U files?
I -think- CUE files get treated as a second instance, even if the track
has already been scanned. I'm pretty sure M3U files are not - but I'm
not sure about that.
If you do have CUE files, go to
server settings / advanced / file types
and add CUE (and maybe m3u?) to the box labeled Disabled Audio File
Extensions.
Hope that helps...

Interesting. A while back MSFT quoted the $600 rule when providing
free software as a benefit for particapting in one of their usability
studies. They neglected to explain the nuances of the rule.

I was actually wondering if hardware to beta testers and such fell into
the same classification or if it was somehow different since they're
providing it for you to do something on their behalf (versus the MSFT
software which was purely an after-the-fact perk).

Suffice to say; I won't be calling the IRS to check up on any of

Re: Napster UK Now 5

2009-10-16 Thread mmca22gr

In truth, I have been using Napster with SB for around 8 months. I have
had some rebuffering problems, but that was with mainly with my SliMP3
and a Mains ethernet kit, so not too concerned. Actually some of the
posts on the Napster boards are very critical, but for £5, I think their
expectations are too high - It's less than minimum wage! FFS, if you
were on the dole, you might even sign up!

FOr £60 a year including 60 downloaded DRM free tracks, plus the
ability to stream to any/all your squeezeboxen - then I would not be too
concerned about how good the Customer Service Dept are. In fact for that
price, I would expect them to be farmed out to the cheapest place that
Napster can put them.

Actually I'm surprised that someone like Virgin have not bought them
out, or tried to replicate - Take out our superfast 50MB broadband and
stream any 8m tracks for free!

The way this streaming media will pan out is that we will go back to
paying per MB of usage. If people think that they can use BBC iPlayer
all day or downlad movies from Apple TV, without eventually having to
'pay the ferryman' will be in for a shock!

To get back to you original question... I though it was a good enough
service to pay £10 a year for, so I am very happy that I can get the
same service for £5. In fact, local.bin, PM me your address and I will
send you a crisp BoE £10 note and you can have a free 2 months - I'll
just pretend that they have not reduced the price until December!

Am I the only Squeezebox owner who thinks that £5 to stream any of 8m
tracks to your player is a no-brainer?

It's even worse than that - there used to be an album view, but it was
removed with the last big software update. Huge pushback from UK users
but apparently driven by two things - making it consistent with the US
service and most of their feedback from focus groups was that people
listen to tracks not albums. Vinyl vs ipod gen, I guess, but no idea
why they can't just add it back.

Napster have developed an iphone streaming app (as opposed to
m.napster.com which is download only) and are in the process of
negotiating the various rights necessary to release it. I've never had
any problems with Napster support but to be fair I've never had to do
more than use them to convert my account between service levels.

Spotify support in Squeezecenter is a regular enhancement request, and
developers have said they would like to add it. However, the current
released Spotify API isn't up to the job.

Have any of you tried m.napster.com site? does it also work well?

 Thanks again.

I have not tried m.napster.com
I agree that an iPhone client would be useful, although for me the
streaming to squeezeboxen is the main focus for Napster.

My offer of £10 still stands ;-)

As for the opt out. I subscribe via a credit card. I subscribe to the
If i signed up online so I should be able to cancel the same way
school of thought. I was not aware that Napster made you call up to
cancel. Dear Naspter, How can I phone up to cancel if I am deaf and
dumb?
I 'm almost certain that I emailed then to cancel my last subscription
with no fuss.

I think Spotify wil be dead in a year and Naspter might limp along for
another year after that. The money in the music industry is to be made
in touring, but that is a small % of total music sales.

How can the record industry go from charging me £10 for Hendrix-Axis
Bols As Love on Vinyl to £12 on CD to £5 to download to £5/8million
(0.06p) per month to listen to it.

I believe that music will become low bandwidth fodder as a free addon
to your ISP. The record companies will survive by getting us to buy
digitally remastered, top notch, super duper, MP3 files of the Albums I
have on record, tape, CD etc. for yet more money. I'll end up paying 4
times for the same record.

Excuse the diversion ;-)

Re: [slim] Hardware Beta Testers Take Note

2009-10-16 Thread Goodsounds

Interesting. A while back MSFT quoted the $600 rule when providing
free software as a benefit for particapting in one of their usability
studies. They neglected to explain the nuances of the rule.

If participants got software to keep for no payment, then that is free,
isn't it? Did they also say it was non-taxable?

jdoering;473255 Wrote:
I was actually wondering if hardware to beta testers and such fell into
the same classification or if it was somehow different since they're
providing it for you to do something on their behalf (versus the MSFT
software which was purely an after-the-fact perk).

If I understand you, are you thinking about the fact that hardware
can't be tested unless it is provided? That's right. What would make it
taxable is that the tester can keep it.

If the testers sign paperwork beyond a non-disclosure agreement, it
might mention that they receive the unit in return for testing. Or maybe
no mention is made.

Perhaps one of the Radio or Touch program participants could comment?

Yes, good to see that someone cares - apology accepted.
You do get frustrated when you spend your money on a product that

I hope I will regain my trust in Logitech real soon... this is a good

Yes it was definitely free; I'm not sure why I quoted it. I don't
recall exactly what they said; I think it was along the lines that if it
was below $600 for the year it didn't need to be reported for taxes. I
suspect they weren't clear on that meaning that THEY didn't need to
report it versus what I was suppose to do. They were definitely tracking
the value of the software and whether or not my total for the year had
exceeded $600.

Mostly this means the owners of the forum have a modicum of

This means that entries are moved to appropriate sub-areas.

Hands off would be fine if there were a phone-service available that
solved problems. Of course I see very few recommendations (other than

Most of the questions here could be well sorted into categories other
than the setup we have and automated collection is already happening.
What's wrong with a send configuration with message option?

It would be great to use this place to share how we share our music.

[slim] 7.41 art scan on 'look for new and changed'?

2009-10-16 Thread bobkoure

Not a big deal, but it when I add a couple of albums and use the look
for new and changed music the artwork isn't scanned in.
On the Information page, there isn't an artwork scan listed at all. I'd
paste that in, but copy/paste from that panel gets all scrambled up.
The scanner log shows that there was an artwork scan, but that it was
over in 0 seconds (snipped from scanner log pasted below.

Not a major deal as the artwork gets added if I visit the album with
the web UI, then refresh.
But this -might- be a bug.
Anyone have any idea if it is?

Oh - it's Version: 7.4.1 - r28887 on a windows 2k server. Art is in
separate 'cover.jpg' files

Code:

  [09-11-16 16:27:55.1938] Slim::Music::Import::endImporter (701) Completed
mergeVariousAlbums Scan in 343 seconds.
  [09-11-16 16:27:55.2180] Slim::Music::Import::runScanPostProcessing (438)
Starting artwork scan
  [09-11-16 16:27:55.3004] Slim::Music::Import::endImporter (701) Completed
findArtwork Scan in 0 seconds.

I use SB3s. I'm surprised controller users aren't up in arms over this

[slim] 7.4: control of SB3 text size?

2009-10-16 Thread bobkoure

It still shows as an option or squeezeslave2, running on my PC (which
has no display) but not for my SB3s.
So... where'd it go?
Thanks!

Re: [slim] 7.4.# and multiple track listing

2009-10-16 Thread bflatmajor

Thanks for the suggestions, but they didn't fix the problem.

I had to cue files so I deleted them.
I looked at all the music on my second drive and noticed that some
tracks had disc 1/1 entered, so I removed that.
I then did a clear and rescan but when I went back into new music those
same albums had multiple tracks listed.

Any other suggestions?

My playlists didn't reference any music on my second drive.

Thanks

Where are you looking?

In the web interface under Settings Player [playername] Display
there are options for 'Font' and 'Standby Font' sizes.

In the IR remote interface there's an option under Settings Display
Text size. I assume that this controls only the 'on' font size and
doesn't affect the standby font size.

There's also control via the 'Size' button on the remote.
