Thanks for the input. I probably didn't make it clear enough that all
is as I want it when I go to the files with Windows Explorer - a double
click brings them up in Firefox, which is what I want. My goal was to
get ACC to open the files in Firefox when it has finished creating them.
Frank has shown that ACC is pointed towards IE but can be changed.

Re: [slim] Would truly love an Audible.com app to be available on Squeezebox

2010-01-07 Thread Mnyb

Has anyone actually paying for DRM content thought about the future ?

Can you or your loved ones listen to these files in +30 years ?

DRM + proprietary formats contribute to the "digital dark age" we will
face.

This information loss is a massive problem for human culture.

Information must be in such format that it can be migrated to new
storage formats indefinitely otherwise it's useless.

Was it "play for sure" or something ? ( sorry no memory for that exact
drm scheme )that M$ dropped so no customer can use their files in the
future when their current hardware quits.

I'll bet that it is fileformats out there that nobody knows how to
encode today.

There's a lot of DRM in the audiobook download world. It may not be
Audible's idea or preference, it might be required by their suppliers'

It seems that DRM is largely about locking customers into a proprietary
relationship - like a wedding. Yeah OK, most of them anyway. You go to
the alter willingly and agree to take the bitter with the sweet. So far
the Audible relationship has avoided serious conflicts and proved
satisfactory... many years after the honeymoon and still no counseling.
Others may see the relationship as abusive - that's their call.

Download Anderson's book "Free..." here - no Audible involved:

Anderson addresses different meanings attributed to the term "free" -
his ideas are thought provoking and highly debatable.

With this I conclude my free [as in non paying] work in his promotion

Re: [slim] FATAL: There is already another copy of the SqueezeboxServerrunning on this machine

2010-01-07 Thread Tom Hutcheson

Thanks for your analysis as always. I investigated a bit more what you
said about the pdk's ("there should be one "pdk-*" directory - if there
is no pdk directory then I would look for some sort of permission issue
preventing file writing of the directory"). I have them on my main
server but no trace on the fatal machine. The OS is XP Home and it
doesn't really support folder permissions from what I can tell (at least
not like XPPro). I did though for goofs share the main user folder on
the network (share folder / and / allow network users to change files)
and I got a couple of pdk's. That seemed promising so I went through
various iterations of uninstall and install but am still getting the
fatal message. I also shared the allusers/applicationdata folder and
post-install the pf/squeeze folder but same result. So while permissions
still seem a potential I don't know what else I can give (I had tried
the other day to create and run under a new admin account and different
default location but to no avail). Possibility (ii) is still a
possibility but I'm afraid that that's like looking for a needle in a
haystack. Am back to considering blowing away the drive and reinstalling
windows tomorrow (XPPro if I can find a legit copy but XPHome again if
not - I have disks for that). I've saved off all personal folders
already. Obviously I don't want to do this for the heck of it - what do
you think about that? If SlimServer won't run after that then I don't
think it ever will.

Thanks -
Tom

Play music
Save and export playlists
Rip a CD

Neither ability is available with Max, but as mentioned the developer

Re: [slim] FATAL: There is already another copy of the SqueezeboxServerrunning on this machine

2010-01-07 Thread bpa

I agree, this is not the most satisfactory way to run SBS mainly because
it would be hardware to keep up to date.

The fact the script version runs but the executable fails makes it
likely to be a problem with how the exe was built or possibly even the
ActiveState apps rather than SBS code.

I found no similar reports in ActiveState forums so I think the problem
is either
(i) how the SqueezeSvr.exe is decompressed and run
(ii) some support library clash or mismatch.

For (i) - If SqueezeSvr.exe runs OK then there should be one "pdk-*"
directory - if there is no pdk directory then I would look for some sort
of permission issue preventing file writing of the directory.

For (ii) - since SqueezeSvr.exe doesn't run - it is necessary to look
at what DLLs are used by SqueezeSvr.exe on a similar XP system and then
check versions on the "faulty" system. One way is to use Process
Explorer and open the lower Pane and from the menu select DLLs to be
shown in lower pane.

Good thought but I didn't find any at all (I eyeballed but I also use
"Everything Search" and searched all of Docs and Settings).

I hooked up a Classic and it was good to hear some music but I don't
think that I can leave the machine with this setup (it might be ok if it
were mine) but too much could go wrong sometime in the future and then I
(she) would be back to square one. I realize we've pushed the ball
farther down the field and I know there's no right answer still about
where a solution may lie but I again need to assess what the options are
at this point. I know (now) that SlimServer can run on this machine.
What do you recommend?

problem about the temporary files that are created when SqueezeSvr.exe
is run and sometimes old version was installed.

You check in \Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Local Settings\Temp

Re: [slim] Revisiting iTunes alternatives for the Mac

2010-01-07 Thread kphinney

I love Lightroom 2, but that's way off-topic.

I've had some time to use Play (another creation by sbooth.org, the
creator of Max and Rip) and I think it shows promise.

However, it is not in the same class as Songbird, which has more and
different functionality. That's not to say it's better. It has a lot
of extra's that I don't need in a music player and management program.
A browser is one feature I can do without in an music program; I already
have Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Flock and that's more than enough.

What I'd really like is for some time to find and try every Mac music
program there is out there. Finding them is the problem, so if anyone
can send me links I'd appreciate it.

Hi

Yes I paid the £15. Compared with iPeng poor value, but compared to my
Lightroom editor.

I had the problem of no decent tagger for large quantities, complete
with configurable bulk folder / naming handling.

I thought about running XP and MP3TAG, but just increasing complexity.

Re: [slim] FATAL: There is already another copy of the SqueezeboxServerrunning on this machine

2010-01-07 Thread bpa

Mutual backslapping all round - solving problems like this need a
determined user as much as somebody to offer suggestions to test.

Strangely, I have not been able to get a tarball version of 7.4.1 to
run on my test Windows systems which is now Vista.

I think Snarlydwarf might have the right idea that somehting is bundled
in the SqueezeSvr.exe that clashes with the target system as
SqueezeSvr.exe is some sort of compressed file with perl.exe, libraries
and precompiled SBS source.

You now have a workaround but the underlying problem is not really
solved. So what to do next ? I think check ActiveState forums to see if
another user has a similar symptom and also possibly using Process
Explorer on a good running SBS to see what DLLs are being used.

[slim] Define radioURL as a parameter to Squeeze center web page player

Hi
Does anyone know if it is possible to define the Radio URL to a radio

This will make it easier to save a link on my desktop that open a

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2010-01-07 Thread ralphy

I have to disagree. Squeezeslave works well with SBS 7.4 as long as all
your streams are the supported format, which is 44.1KHz, 16-bit, stereo.
I run it for weeks without issue using 7.4.2. Only having to restart it
when windows goes stupid and I have to reboot the system.

I'm currently working on a fix to stop squeezeslave from attempting to
play a stream if it is not in that format. Until then, please use the
custom-convert.conf file discussed above. It works fine with 7.4 as
long as you don't switch too quickly between streams.

[slim] ESET NOD32 vs ESET Smart Security 4

2010-01-07 Thread SadieKate

I need to renew Nod32 for 3 computers in the house and am wondering if I
should upgrade to Smart Security 4 instead.

But I wonder about problems with my Duets. After much struggling, I
have 2 working again. A 3rd may or may not (it's been unplugged for 2
weeks so I don't have to look at the stupid blue light). I'm glad to
see that Logitech is finally admitting that they have problems on their
servers but, frankly, I'm worn out from trying to connect that 3rd Duet.
Right now, I don't have what it takes to struggle with it when
Logitech's servers haven't caught up with Christmas sales. I've told
multiple people over the phone that all is correct on my end. I've sent
scathing customer service evaluations. They don't care. All the
descriptions they are reporting are exactly what I told them with the
response from them that the problem was on my end.

So, if I change to ESET Smart Security 4 are all 3 Duets going to lose
connectivity and I'll have a thousand plus dollars in shiny black
doorstops?

I was going to buy my husband the Radio for Xmas. I am so glad I
decided against it.

Thanks for any ESET Smart Security advice you can provide.

Hey Dave - thanks for the reminder on Jaikoz. I gave it a quick run

It's not all bad; rarely does anyone write a post entitled "FYI: I've
never had an issue and love [insert product name]".

iTunes worked for me for quite some time. I've posted about how iTunes
+ TwistedFlac = FLAC on the Mac along with WAVs on your iPod without
keeping multiple copies or using extra drive space, as well as getting
the most out of iTune with Max and xACT.

But as my library grows and I use my Mac for listening less and less,
and Apple doesn't seem to show any interest in accepting the Audiophile
standard of FLAC, it has become all to cumbersome to continue using
iTunes.

In the mean time iTunes has become a self promoting Apple product the
likes of which have never been seen before. Little devotion has been
paid to improving your music nor features that benefit the actual
listening of music. Instead Apple devleopment has added new Apple
iTunes Music Store features, iPod games, applications, and ringtones,
the ability to watch movies and TV programs, a dynamic visualizer (Great
if listening thru a optical and mental haze of bong smoke), and sound
checking to alter your music in ways never intended.

iTunes is the standard for PC and Mac, I have no doubt. But what I'd
like to see is listed in easier posts; a simple music player and
organizer for the Mac. There are some good alternatives noted above.
Songbird, VLC, Play, and others will let me listen and, to a small
degree, organize the content I want without having to convert.

But most of all, look at Apple's webpage devoted to iTunes. Beginning
1/2 way down the page you will find their self-serving promo: Buy, Buy,
Buy. Nearly half of the features in iTunes are devoted to buying music,
renting and purchasing videos, the App Store, and building your own
library of purchased audiobooks.

If you don't have the remote server settings configured, ACC will use
the local installation of SBS. Now SBS may not be running but maybe
MySQL is. ACC will then retrieve the data from the local MySQL database
instead of the remote. Considering the huge differences in both album
and track count this seems very likely.

To determine if this is the case try one of the following:
1. deinstall SBS on the local machine. ACC will not be able to retrieve
any data and hence ACC was using the local DB
2. disable MySQL on the machine where ACC is running. ACC will then not
be able to retrieve data and hence was using the local DB
3. Configure remote server settings in ACC. For this however you first
need to modify the my.tt file on the readynas box to allowe remote
access to the database. I don't know how this must be done on a readynas
box as I don't have one. Maybe others users can help here a this
configuration has been used many times.

An easy solution maybe to enable SBS on the local machine, configure it
to scan drive M: and then run ACC against the local DB (ofcourse don't
configure the remote server settings). As a new scan will get the DB up
to date with the readynas DB I don't think you will see any differences
between ACC en SBS on the readynas anymore.

Frank

[slim] My Week with a Squeezebox Radio (a reivew)

2010-01-07 Thread mrkerr

I've had the roku setup on my system for the past three years or so and
haven't had any major problems with it. Unfortunately, its an abandoned
piece of hardware so I've been looking at replacing it with a squeezebox
of late; when the Radio was announced I figured it would be good gifts
for my teenage daughters and a chance for me to test the squeezebox
waters. What follows is my overall impressions.

I like the looks of the radio; I bought the red version. I like the
screen (nice to have the graphics over roku's rather limited text
screen) and the sound is fine for what it is.

I like the Pandora and internet radio features (Pandora is what the
girls use most on the radio) and it works great and reliably so far.
The roku could handle internet radio as well but again, the interface on
the radio makes things a bit simpler.

The menu tree on the radio took some getting use to but the girls and I
have gotten better at it with time. I had some difficulties in the
beginning finding some of the stuff buried in the menus; a menu tree in
the user guide or on-line would have been helpful.

Initial start-up documentation was adequate. Setting up the radio,
accessing the wireless network, and doing Pandora and internet radio was
very easy and worked great.

And then i installed Squeezebox Server...

The next step was to get the radios to access the girls music
libraries. In the roku, its pretty simple. iTunes has to be running on
the computer with the music you want, and the roku then "sees" the
library and can access the music. if you want to switch to another
computer's music and its running iTunes, then its just a click to change
to that library. Very simple.

SBS seems to be over complicated. Granted, the plug-ins and stuff give
it some nice options but overall, it just seems for the most part,
unnecessary. Using iTunes was much easier; not having to worry about
what directories store what or having the SBS rescan libraries. I have
the music on a network drive and my PS3 can access the music directly
without any extra software as can the roku; not sure why we have to have
the SBS running all the time.

Granted, it wouldn't be a big deal to run SBS if it was just a better
piece of software. In just the week I've been running it I've had
problems with it just quitting on its own, disconnecting from the radios
at random times, music scans dieing mid-way. I've spent several hours
on the forums searching for similar problems and finding that I'm not
alone...seems to be several out there that have had similar issues.
I've tried many of the fixes with mixed results; I've fixed the scan
problem by killing my anti-virus (the excluding file types didn't work)
and turning my firewall off completely (none of the recommended firewall
settings seem to fix anything).

It also runs slow and just getting to the control panel or web
interface takes forever. Frankly, the whole thing seems like a beta
version...I could be a bit more forgiving if the squeezboxes were brand
new products but the server should be more mature than this by now.

It's also klunky...many of the settings and options aren't readily
apparent what they require or even do (it took a while for me to figure
out what "use iTunes" did and I still can't get any applets to show up
on the radios) and again, the scanning thing seems to be unnecessary.
Why can't it just "look" at the music directly without scanning like all
of the other media servers do? I'm also having pretty much hit or miss
luck with getting album artwork to show up.

It would also help if there was better documentation available for SBS;
the manual barely addresses it and the wiki isn't very helpful either.
So far the forums are the only avenue to really try and get your hands
around the thing which is a shame.

So, overall, I'd give the internet radio and Pandora and Facebook
aspects of the radio and the hardware itself an "A"...but the my music
feature gets pulled down to a "C-" with the klunky and unreliable SBS.
The girls are happy with the non-my music features and simply use their
ipods to plug into the radio when "my music" is misbehaving...I'll hold
off on buying a Duet until SBS gets better..and just use the PS3 and
roku to stream music in the mean time.

I don't think the code is doing something odd by falling through - I
think the Open port parameters may trigger a strange response as
LocalAddr is not setup normally (but is when using --playeraddr) but I
can't be sure until the error code is shown.

Re: [slim] FATAL: There is already another copy of the SqueezeboxServerrunning on this machine

2010-01-07 Thread Tom Hutcheson

First - thanks for all your hard work, bpa.

You mention that the process is more complicated with 7.4 - I get the
same fatal error with 7.3.1 - does that matter how you think about
this?

I don't know perl and obviously have never installed the environment
but after looking I'm comfortable with most things I see there
(including reg stuff and srvany) as long as the instructions actually
work. Of course that only recreates the environment and I would have no
idea about actual debugging.

Did it give you any new clues the fact that the port opened
successfully in the small debug tests? Is it starting to look possible
that the execution is dropping through some code unexpectedly and
hitting this error?

Thanks -
Tom

Same here, I re-purposed an EEEpc 701 (running a stripped version
Ubuntu 9.04). It does a great job of serving my 2 SB3s and Boom. No
issues with a slow web interface, synching etc.

To the OP, you don't have to use Ubuntu netbook remix, the full 9.10
will likely support all your hardware - try the live CD to test it out
before you install it.

Sorry...didn't realize I was the bottleneck...

1. No
2. Yes

Now this may be a wrench, so pardon the long windedness following, but
want to be sure this isn't 'user error'...

I am running SBS on a ReadyNAS Pro. I am running ACC on a Windows XP
with SBS installed, but not running. MySQL ODBC driver installed on XP
machine. Music on NAS mapped as M:\. Running ACC by just pointing at
mapped directories, and 'ignoring' networking setup options in ACC. Can
all this be the root of the headaches I'm causing you??

What DRM'd audio content does a Squeezebox play? How many non-Zune's
play Zune music?

Why did Walmart and others drop 'Plays for Sure' WMA and switch to mp3?
Why did iTMS remove DRM?

Not sure why I would download it when I can't hear it.. It won't play
on any of my systems.

Does it confuse the two definitions of 'free'? 'Free as in Freedom,
Not Free Beer' as the FSF says. Sure seems to from the title... if he
can't get a basic premise of Free (as in Freedom) Software correct, his
conclusions will be as nonsensical as if he thought 'software' was a
reference to what 'Plushies' wear.

Again: why download something I can not listen to how I want, whether
it's on SB or for AudioBooks, my car stereo. That is not freedom.

Sigh - it looks like it may be necessary to get SBS running with
ActiveState. This has got more complicated with 7.4 and I haven't tried
it but the starting point would be the instructions here
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/InstallSVNTrunkAsService

It were last updated in Nov 2009 by ralphy so I think it is probably
correct or very close. Not all the steps are necessary for our test
(i.e. no need for SVN or registry changes). I won't be able to test
this out to get a shortened version (i.e. no svn, no registry changes,

Once a standard SBS is running - then a change can be made to get the
proper error message displayed.

Interesting about no hosts file.

I made one change from the SBS source code as it was the only way I
could reproduce SBS behaviour on my PC. I'd like you to try two
different code changes and see if the "FATAL" error message appears.

Code:

$udpsock = IO::Socket::INET->new(
Proto => 'udp',
LocalPort => SERVERPORT,
  # LocalAddr => '127.0.0.1'

Can you edit (e.g. use Notepad or Wordpad) testudp.pm and make the
following changes to the line in red
1. remove the leading "#", save the file and try running testudp.pm
2. Now change 127.0.0.1 to localhost, save the file and rerun.

Unlike BBCiPlayer Audible is DRM so to creating an unlicensed plugin to
play the file would be illegal. Furthermore Audible change their
mechanism regularly so whoever provides the plugin would have to provide
ongoing support.

See this thread about the effort to convert Audible files to MP3 so
they can be played on other platforms such as Linux.

You guys do know that for $20 a month w/ audible subscription you get
to download 2 audiobooks of your choice... I mean if you stick to your
subscription plan you essentially pay $10 per book. Those alternatives
are available but if those alternatives are purchased via a mainstream
alternative source i.e retail or online bookstore, you pay the full
retail price.

This isnt a case of paying for crap that I really cant use...I have
been able to use it without issue from day one and continue to be able
to use it, I just singularly cant use it on the squeezebox, that
honestly is not reason enough for me to send a message to the powers
that be at audible and threaten to leave if they dont cut out their
tomfoolery post-haste!

Keep in mind that there are competitors out there that offer additional
options that will determine which system some folks purchase over
others. (http://raumfeld.com for example is enroute..) Squeezebox seems
flexible and open enough and popular enough with the demographic that
seems predisposed to tinkering that I would suspect someone in the
community has the where-withall to create a soloution to various
solutions...(that BBCi player for example)

I hope a skilled and willing soul or/and the folks at logitech/slimbox
team see's the request and makes a solution. While the debate is good
and all and I'm sure that your reasons for frowning on digital content
with DRM barriers have a measure of merit philisophically to like-minded
folk as yourself, BUT the main competitor already has a solution.

This does seem to be the most open of the available options so I would
suspect it would be the most dynamic with solutions, fixes and new
options.

I as a audible customer apparently am pleased enough with the product
and service that they have had me as a customer since the day they went
live ($20 a month for 2-audiobooks of your choice..heck yeah!).
Personally I feel like I have a high quality product that has pleased me
for years and have had it at quite a discount when I compare what I
would have to pay for the same content if I bought the CD version.

..if Sonos had Slacker I would have never posted this, the squeezebox
would simply be on e-bay but I do suspect the light-hearted debate is
worth having (so long as it doesnt get in the way of fix ;))

so first try with just the UDP opening port code as I think that is all
that matters.

Attached is a simple Perl file - download and rename to testudp.pm.

Hi,

Squeezeslave and 7.4x seem to have a hard time working nicely together.
(7.3x seems to work ok).

See this thread - http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69338

and this bug - https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14740

Unfortunately, squeezeslave is not "offically supported." There is no
timeframe associated with fixing this bug.

My reccomendation: Register on the bug tracker and vote on this bug.
The more votes, the better chance the problem will be worked on.

Just my opinions.

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2010-01-07 Thread GreyBeard

I've used Squeezeslave in different versions for a couple of years now,
but almost exclusively with my local music library. I've just updated to
7.4.1 and SqueezeSlave 0.9-05. I've found that I can listen to an
internet stream (say sky.fm classical guitar) but if I switch to any
other stream (say sky.fm classic rock), there appears to be a freeze.
The problem seems to be changing from any internet stream to any other
internet stream. SqueezeSlave keeps reporting "libmad: (mp3) bad stream
pointer (0x0235)". I can't play anything (internet or local library)
until I stop and start the server or I close and re-open SquuezeSlave.
I've checked back with earlier SqueezeSlave versions and I get the same
behaviour. Is this something that started with 7.4.1 or am I missing
something obvious?

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2010-01-07 Thread robinbowes

Guys (& Gals),

Most of the discovery issues in Net::UDAP are because I did a dirty
hack to work out the machines local IP addresses (I parse the output of
ifconfig or ipconfig on Windows). This is fragile and fails on OSX and
any non-English locale.

There is a module that can be used to list local IP addresses - I use
it in the current trunk version - but is not pure perl, ie. it requires
binary compilation and I am trying to keep Net::UDAP pure perl so it's
easy to install (extract the tarball/zip and run).

Anyway...

I've added a new option in the 1.0.x branch to allow the local address
to be specified. Get it here:

https://projects.robinbowes.com/Net-UDAP/trac/browser/branches/1.0.x

(download the zip file from the link at the bottom of the page)

Use it as follows:

scripts/udap_shell.pl --local-address a.b.c.d

where:
a.b.c.d is the IP address of the local machine

Please let me know how this works for you, preferably with a post to my
mailing list:

http://lists.projects.robinbowes.com/mailman/listinfo/net-udap

Cheers,

R.

I'm unable to 'discover' using Net::UDAP from my macbook using Snow
Leopard. Have to use VMware installed XP and it all works fine.

I've updated the 'wiki'

on creating the build environment used to compile the win32 versions of
squeezeslave using cygwin.

Re: [slim] Net::UDAP - SqueezeBox Receiver configuration tool

2010-01-07 Thread ericj

I pulled from backup my last known good Net::Udap, and see the same
problem with it not really doing discover, and with the error mentioned
above.
Anyone verify that it is a Snow Leopard problem?
Thanks.

I'd be surprised if running as a different user helped.

Have you tried using the custom-convert.conf from post '72'
At least you wouldn't need to restart the service each time you hit an
unsupported format.

Can you post a couple of the URLs that cause SS to "hang"?

I've never tested multiple ASIO instances. I can think of several
reasons why you only see one device;

ASIO4ALL might not support multiple sound cards.
The portaudio library might not support multiple ASIO devices.
Could be a bug in the device listing code of SS when using ASIO.

Please post any findings here.

Thanks.

I'm assuming you're using Windows, so if IE8 is installed correctly you
can try right-clicking the .hta file in File Explorer and select Open
with... and then select IE as the program to open the file.

No, not at all, it's folks telling you not to make the same mistake
TWICE! :)
In fact, it's the DRM telling you "stop listening to your DRM music" on
any platform not approved by the DRM rights holder (which is NOT you).

Supporting *any* institution that employs DRM is the same as approving
bad behaviour. It's no different than you ignoring the "do not feed the
bears" signs in the parks, then getting all teary eyed when they must
shoot the bear for getting too close to humans. ;)

I've always avoided DRM, never been bitten, always found what I wanted
elsewhere absent the DRM headaches & restrictions.

By all means vote with your $$$'s, but understand what you are indeed
voting for. :)

For a SB3, you need a card based on the Atheros AR2413 chipset. If you
search the forums for that chipset name, you should find some other
postings about this.

I think this one should do (probably !):

Re: [slim] FATAL: There is already another copy of the SqueezeboxServerrunning on this machine

2010-01-07 Thread bpa

I don't think the suggested fix is applicable to your problem. However
it did show up a bug in error handling in Perl on Windows so that I
think with a small code change we can get a real error message and not
the "unknown error".

The real error message may also give a better idea as to the cause of
the failure but code change will require ActiveState Perl to be
installed. I'll come back with details - if I can get better error
message from my Windows systems.

Re: [slim] Would truly love an Audible.com app to be available on Squeezebox

2010-01-07 Thread robchel

Like others I've been collecting digital books for decades - and simply
desire to enjoy access to my elibrary via MySN.com. I don't see this as
incompatible with trying to change DRM and pricing, as those issues are
best addressed through individual purchasing decisions. The alternative
is a bit like telling folks to stop listening to all the DRM music files
they've bought.

BTW, you may download [for free] from those rascals at Audible.com;
"FREE: The Future of a Radical Price" by Chris Anderson. Very
interesting insights into the when/why/how of "free".

I'm also not political. But I use iPods, mp3-capable car radios,
several Squeezeboxes and an Android phone and I simply don't want to pay
for crap that I then can't really use.

And it's not about a large population, a large share of their customers
will be enough.

At least over here in Germany most of the stuff that is on Audible is
also available in mp3 format on other platforms. One platform I'm using
(soforthoeren) moved some stuff to WMA a few years back under pressure
of the publishers and after some complaints and maybe some drop in sales
they switched back to mp3.

Not buying the stuff actually helps!

Re: [slim] Would truly love an Audible.com app to be available on Squeezebox

Well I just tossed my hat into the ring and voted. As for the
sceptics..I dunno, I dont think I should wait until audible (amazon)
"feels my wrath", and scrap the DRM components off the file format and
maybe then I can listen to my files on a sqeezebox. I think audiobooks
will be more of harder nut to crack than the music debate, and frankly
audiobooks arent that big a deal to the larger consumer base to cause a
ruckus about..I dunno..

sigh..I'm just not that political regarding my audiobooks...I signed up
on Audible the moment it went live and have a huge collection of books,
prior I had been buying books on tape and CD so I've been doing this for
20-year easy...I mean I have a HUGE collection. I thoroughly enjoy
listening to them, and do daily..even more than music..and I can do that
right now on my sonos (and iTunes), I'd love to be able to do so on my
squeezebox as well.

Inevitably "somethings gotta go!", if sonos gets slacker before the
squeezebox gets audible, the squeezebox goes! If squeezebox gets audible
before the sonos gets slacker...the sonos goes. Again, both work
flawlessly in my modest setup..(only use it in two rooms, so not as
fancy as some other folks) so in practice none works better than the
other..they both just work so I'm favoring none over the other, but it's
feeling cumbersome to have both..the simple and easy has become clunky.
