IR remote (if e.g. I just want to skip a track or I know exactly which

Mixed

IR:30%
Radio front panel:20%
Controller:30%
iPeng:20% (before Iphone wifi died, AAARGH!)

I'm comfortable to grab the nearest and most available.

I find IR fine for radio and selecting from New Music or if I have a
particular album in mind.

For general browsing and on the fly playlists, I find controller or
iPeng better. I have an extra dock next to pc for SBC and if it's there
(SBC still downstairs this morning) then I'd use SBC.

iPeng is great, once it is loaded, and if not using phone for anything
else.

The options confuse some people, e.g. GF, but I think the flexibility
is a significant benefit of the system.

Personally I think the IR should behave exactly the same, no matter
what it is pointed at, the different behaviour of Press right/centre
between older and Squeezeplay is annoying (e.g. playlist wiping due to
the '+ is more' change).

[slim] A quick question about Tagging

2010-04-09 Thread Sike

I have been cleaning up my tags and adding Album Art to my collection.

When I do a rescan after updating a couple of albums, somtimes (3 times
now) an album will show up twice. The first one will have 11 of the 12
songs from the CD in it and the second one a single track from the CD.

I have tried retagging the CD and making sure that all Tags are the

Any ideas anyone?

2010-04-09 Thread vernavideo

Hi,
I did few more researches and found out that the web interface
performance is more down to the sbs architecture than the platform,
therefore I am not so sure I will see any real performance increase
over the Synology NAS 107+

I have a fairly big house, so I am expecting the number of SBs to
increase in the future, as well as my (sigh!) mp3 collection which at
the moment only lists 300 something albums with 3800 or so songs.

I am sure that soon enaugh I will reach the usability limit of my
current configuration (especially with the kids approaching the
critical age). will see by then what the options will be (a super
efficient sbs which can run out of my router, who knows?).
I will still try out the vortexbox solution just for the fun of it and
to have an extra playre free. Any idea what would be the typical boot
time on a 2 ghz athlon machine?

Many thanks,

Stefano

[slim] New Setup: Can't Access Pandora or Rhapsody

2010-04-09 Thread ajkidle

Have recently moved and am getting everything re-setup. (Top priority,
of course, was to get the Squeezebox gear up and running.) Local music
is working fine, but none of the players can access Pandora or Rhapsody.
I have internet connectivity via my laptop, and even SuperDateTime
works, so SBS is able to access some internet data. Here's the basic
setup:

ATT Uverse
- I don't like the flaky wireless router built into their gateway, so
I'm using my own Linksys behind the gateway
- This means I have a 192.168.1.x from the gateway and 192.168.2.x
from the Linksys
- All Squeezeboxen are on the 192.168.2.x (as is the SBS running on a
MacBook)
- Everything is running wireless, SBS 7.5.0

I think it has something to do with my double-router setup (the .1.x
and .2.x addresses.) ATT claims the gateway will recognize router
behind router and adjust accordingly, and that seems to be true as
everything else works with respect to internet connectivity. Any ideas
why the Squeezebox can't connect to Rhapsody or Pandora? I miss my
internet music.

It could create a command line script to do this. It's much harder to
do in the GUI. Is that good enough?

Also is it OK if the user has to keep all the shared files music,
pictures, etc on the USB drive? So you would have an OS internal drive
and a storage USB external drive?

Do we need to support more then one USB drive at a time?

My preference would be to have it work similar to my windows machine
setup. That is, I could have music on the internal 2TB drive, a couple
of external 2TB USB drives, etc. but on the local harddrive I would
simply have short cuts in a music directory pointing at these various
drives. SbS already (on windows at least) can treat all these shortcuts
as part of the single music library and scan all these drives and add
music. I know you can have a lot of internal drive space, but I need
more than 4TB of space for my collection.

 Thank you.

 Using V 7.5

I presume you are seeing options like you may also like when
attempting to get more stream info.
This is how RadioTime is now handling it's streams on SB players and is
lacking a real More Info option which used to give bitrate and format.

Even more ridiculous is the offering of choose a stream which lists
all the different streams (by bitrate) that are available for that
station.
But this is pointless information if I don't know which of those
streams I am currently connected to.

Any non-RadioTime stream will properly give the birate when selecting
More Info.

I don't know what research led you to that conclusion. Obviously it
depends on both the software design and the power of the machine
running SBS. Yes, the SBS web ui is slower than a purpose-built
platform dependent compiled executable program would be. But even so,
it can be pretty snappy and responsive on a suitably powered machine,
or dog slow on an underpowered machine. And most consumer-grade NASs
are underpowered. It appears that the DS107+ only has 128MB RAM and a
500MHz processor -- those are your binding constraints, especially the
RAM.

I've run SBS on a comparable NAS (LinkStation Pro) and on an Atom-based
small pc that is almost identical to the Vortexbox appliance, and the
difference in web ui performance is enormous. Of course, both do a fine
job of streaming music to multiple SBs.

I think you misunderstand. Nobody is looking for the ability to swap
these drives at will. They simply want to store their library on an

SbS doesn't care one way or the other. I'm sure many people are
already doing this on Windows, where the drive is assigned a drive
letter and doesn't really look any different than an internal drive.
Either by designating a folder on the external drive as their music
folder, or by placing a shortcut in their music folder.

Exactly. For those of us with lower powered machines it makes more
sense to attach an external drive so when the eventual hardware upgrade
happens the library switch is a no brainer.

version of the Album Catalog Creator (V3.3rc)

I saw another posting with the same error a while ago in this thread
but I'm not sure if you're already working on a fix.

I use an English Windows XP with the dutch date/time format.

I've included the logfile.

Something I can do to help solve this problem?

Put a \ after the M: you use in the starting folder field and it should
work (let me know the outcome).

You might be able to order a PS from Logitech, I would check there
first. If not, there are plenty of 2 3 amp PS on the Internet.

As for the sliding adapter, I went to Cingular (Now ATT) to get a
spare US one after I lost one. Many of the Blackberrys come with all
the adapters so they might have one they can give you. The Squeezebox
accessory site used to sell an adapter plate kit for $9 I think. But I
have seen the adapters sold by themselves for a $1.59 in parts catalogs
like Digikey and Mousier and the like.

Thanks for the slider idea - I have a Blackberry Euro-slider anyway,

Don't think that Logitech in Europe sells the SB PS separately - and
for various reasons (naked commerce) the SB Classic USA PS is

Re: [slim] man at work - back to design phase - please help me set up my music network

2010-04-09 Thread tcutting

If you were going to go with something like Vortexbox, or other
purpose-built server, I don't know why you'd also want to keep a
separate NAS... the VB or SBS server should also be a very affective
NAS. I looked at the NAS route, and ended up building a Linux-based
server from a barebone Atom PC and large HD, and that is both my SBS
server and my file server (NAS, if you will). Setup a dedicated server
with the power to effectively run SBS, move everything over from you
current NAS, and then sell the NAS on eBay or Craigslist... just a
thought :-)

Re: [slim] man at work - back to design phase - please help me set up my music network

2010-04-09 Thread aubuti

Hmm, I've read that thread and there is no way I read that as saying
that the hardware or platform doesn't matter. While the web-based ui
does place limits on how fast the ui can go, if you put it on
sufficiently low-powered hardware there is no limit to how _slow_ it
will respond. But I guess everyone has his/her own interpretation.

Yes, you can set up Vortexbox to read from the NAS instead of the
internal HDD. That's what I did for my first few weeks of running my
MSI Wind server (ie, Vortexbox appliance equivalent) while I figured
out which internal HDD to buy. Scanning is slower because it's doing
everything over the network, but it won't slow down web ui performance
because that will all be on the VB machine.

However, like tcutting says, it's not clear at all what you would gain
from keeping the music files on the NAS instead of on a local hard
drive on the VB. You could resell or re-purpose the NAS, or depending
on the NAS and the computer you use, you could even re-use the HDD in
the NAS (I tried that, but wanted a quieter, more efficient drive).

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-04-09 Thread ericj

Actually Ipeng is not bad zt 2x on the ipad. One thing that does not
seem to work: One cannot edit the configuration of options on the
bottom bar. For example, one can't replace 'artists' with 'favorites'
etc. Dragging seems to work, but it does not replace the previous
icon.

Also a small request for ipeng when ported to the ipad. Long classical
titles etc. are hard to read when they are truncated. I'm guessing with
all the screen real estate that will be an 'ex-problem'

Finally, while I appreciate the many ambitious suggestions in this
thread. I think rescaling things for the ipad, with a minimum of new
features, would be useful in itself.

Thanks.

The drive letter and full remote physical path are required when using
a starting folder but I made it mandatory.

SBS stores paths to tracks in the database in this format:
/srv/myshare/Audio/Albums/Artist/30 Seconds To Mars/A Beautifull Lie/01
- 30 seconds to mars - A beautiful lie - Attack.mp3

My directory tree is structured like this:
/srv/myshare/Audio/Albums/Artist
/srv/myshare/Audio/Albums/Compilation
/srv/myshare/Audio/Albums/Soundtracks
/srv/myshare/Audio/Seperate tracks/bla bla

In SBS I have specified /srv/myshare as the music directory.

When I would run ACC without a starting folder specified ACC would
include seperate tracks and many other unwanted stuff. So, I use a
starting folder to tell ACC to only look at say
/srv/myshare/Audio/Albums/Artist

In the query ACC performs against the database, ACC performs something
like:
Get all tracks in the database where the path includes the string X

To specify string X you'd at least need a drive letter. Say you specify
drive letter M which is mapped to the music share. The music share is
actually the /srv/myshare folder on the remote server.

If the starting folder would be M:\Albums\Artist the X in could be
\Albums\Artist (the drive letter and collon are stripped) however that
could be ambiguous as in another folder this string may also occur. To
make X absolutely unique the Full remote physical path is required
(here: /srv/myshare). This string is concatenated with \Albums\Artist
to become /srv/myshare/Albums/Artists. The concatenated string will be
used in the DB query for Starting Folder filter purpose.

Hope this still makes any sense and it answers your question?

Would you know if it is possible to configure the vb to read and save

I have a few VB virtual machines running that point to my NAS' (Buffalo
TeraStation II's.)

The streaming performance is not affected. The webUI is noticeably
faster than a winders implementation.

The only drawback is that you have to use the text console of the VB to
add a mount point (directory) and edit /etc/fstab to add a the mount
statement. You only have to do this once. You will also have to issue a

yum install samba-client

to enable pointing to a winders-like drive (I use NFS rather than
SMB.)

Question: How Do You Control Your Music/Squeezebox?

- SBC (Squeezebox Controller)
- IR Remote Control
- Web UI
- Touch
- Other - Explain

I usually use either the ir-remote or ipeng when using the SB3
(sometimes also the web ui if I have neither handy). The Radio gets
controlled locally or by the web ui.
