I have an extra dock next to pc for SBC and if it's there (SBC still downstairs this morning) then I'd use SBC. iPeng is great, once it is loaded, and if not using phone for anything else. Re: [slim] man at work - back to design phase - please help me set up my music network
Hi, I did few more researches and found out that the web interface performance is more down to the sbs architecture than the platform, therefore I am not so sure I will see any real performance increase over the Synology NAS 107+ I have a fairly big house, so I am expecting the number of SBs to increase in the future, as well as my (sigh!) mp3 collection which at the moment only lists 300 something albums with 3800 or so songs. I am sure that soon enaugh I will reach the usability limit of my current configuration (especially with the kids approaching the critical age). will see by then what the options will be (a super efficient sbs which can run out of my router, who knows?). I will still try out the vortexbox solution just for the fun of it and to have an extra playre free. Any idea what would be the typical boot time on a 2 ghz athlon machine? [slim] New Setup: Can't Access Pandora or Rhapsody
Have recently moved and am getting everything re-setup. (Top priority, of course, was to get the Squeezebox gear up and running.) Local music is working fine, but none of the players can access Pandora or Rhapsody. I have internet connectivity via my laptop, and even SuperDateTime works, so SBS is able to access some internet data. Here's the basic setup: ATT Uverse - I don't like the flaky wireless router built into their gateway, so I'm using my own Linksys behind the gateway - This means I have a 192.168.1.x from the gateway and 192.168.2.x from the Linksys - All Squeezeboxen are on the 192.168.2.x (as is the SBS running on a MacBook) - Everything is running wireless, SBS 7.5.0 I think it has something to do with my double-router setup (the .1.x and .2.x addresses.) ATT claims the gateway will recognize router behind router and adjust accordingly, and that seems to be true as everything else works with respect to internet connectivity. Any ideas why the Squeezebox can't connect to Rhapsody or Pandora? Also is it OK if the user has to keep all the shared files music, pictures, etc on the USB drive? So you would have an OS internal drive and a storage USB external drive? Do we need to support more then one USB drive at a time? My preference would be to have it work similar to my windows machine setup. That is, I could have music on the internal 2TB drive, a couple of external 2TB USB drives, etc. but on the local harddrive I would simply have short cuts in a music directory pointing at these various drives. SbS already (on windows at least) can treat all these shortcuts as part of the single music library and scan all these drives and add music. But even so, it can be pretty snappy and responsive on a suitably powered machine, or dog slow on an underpowered machine. And most consumer-grade NASs are underpowered. It appears that the DS107+ only has 128MB RAM and a 500MHz processor -- those are your binding constraints, especially the RAM. I'm sure many people are already doing this on Windows, where the drive is assigned a drive letter and doesn't really look any different than an internal drive. Either by designating a folder on the external drive as their music folder, or by placing a shortcut in their music folder. Exactly. Re: [slim] man at work - back to design phase - please help me set up my music network
If you were going to go with something like Vortexbox, or other purpose-built server, I don't know why you'd also want to keep a separate NAS... the VB or SBS server should also be a very affective NAS. I looked at the NAS route, and ended up building a Linux-based server from a barebone Atom PC and large HD, and that is both my SBS server and my file server (NAS, if you will). Setup a dedicated server with the power to effectively run SBS, move everything over from you current NAS, and then sell the NAS on eBay or Craigslist... just a thought :-) -- tcutting tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=76928 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] man at work - back to design phase - please help me set up my music network
Hmm, I've read that thread and there is no way I read that as saying that the hardware or platform doesn't matter. While the web-based ui does place limits on how fast the ui can go, if you put it on sufficiently low-powered hardware there is no limit to how _slow_ it will respond. But I guess everyone has his/her own interpretation. Yes, you can set up Vortexbox to read from the NAS instead of the internal HDD. That's what I did for my first few weeks of running my MSI Wind server (ie, Vortexbox appliance equivalent) while I figured out which internal HDD to buy. Scanning is slower because it's doing everything over the network, but it won't slow down web ui performance because that will all be on the VB machine. However, like tcutting says, it's not clear at all what you would gain from keeping the music files on the NAS instead of on a local hard drive on the VB. You could resell or re-purpose the NAS, or depending on the NAS and the computer you use, you could even re-use the HDD in the NAS (I tried that, but wanted a quieter, more efficient drive). -- aubuti Nothing high-end, but music anywhere I want it, and it's '100% wind powered' (http://www.cleancurrents.com/). Actually Ipeng is not bad zt 2x on the ipad. One thing that does not seem to work: One cannot edit the configuration of options on the bottom bar. I can't remove the driveletter in the 'remote server/NAS options' screen, the help text onscreen says I need the drive letter but the 'usage and configuration' information on your homepage doesn't mention the drive letter at all. Did I miss some information? The drive letter and full remote physical path are required when using a starting folder but I made it mandatory. SBS stores paths to tracks in the database in this format: /srv/myshare/Audio/Albums/Artist/30 Seconds To Mars/A Beautifull Lie/01 - 30 seconds to mars - A beautiful lie - Attack.mp3 My directory tree is structured like this: /srv/myshare/Audio/Albums/Artist /srv/myshare/Audio/Albums/Compilation /srv/myshare/Audio/Albums/Soundtracks /srv/myshare/Audio/Seperate tracks/bla bla In SBS I have specified /srv/myshare as the music directory. When I would run ACC without a starting folder specified ACC would include seperate tracks and many other unwanted stuff. So, I use a starting folder to tell ACC to only look at say /srv/myshare/Audio/Albums/Artist In the query ACC performs against the database, ACC performs something like: Get all tracks in the database where the path includes the string X To specify string X you'd at least need a drive letter. Say you specify drive letter M which is mapped to the music share. The music share is actually the /srv/myshare folder on the remote server. If the starting folder would be M:\Albums\Artist the X in could be \Albums\Artist (the drive letter and collon are stripped) however that could be ambiguous as in another folder this string may also occur. To make X absolutely unique the Full remote physical path is required (here: /srv/myshare). This string is concatenated with \Albums\Artist to become /srv/myshare/Albums/Artists. The concatenated string will be used in the DB query for Starting Folder filter purpose. Hope this still makes any sense and it answers your question?
