we can only vote to express our desire. checked CustomBrowse, now I'm home, and it works fine for years (and decades) which confirms (for me at least) that my tags are correct. This also confirms that track year is held in the database, distinct from album year (which I use more often as part of sort albums by artist then year). that strikes me that fixing year should therefore be quite easy (but I'm no programmer). -- DigitalMitch 2 * SB3, 1 * Boom, 2 * SBR, 1 * Radio and 1 * Touch controlled by IR, SBC [and iPeng on iPhone - wifi died!!] 7.5.0 on WHS on HP MediaSmart (EX470) upgraded to 2G RAM http://www.last.fm/user/digimich DigitalMitch's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15999 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78852 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] New user -answer to stupid question
Hi all, I recently purchased a squeezebox classic which I have connected to my existing audionote dac/hi fi. My question is a simple one, I am looking for a front end which will allow me to rip a large cd collection in flac format and store on an external hdd (1tb) for playback on my existing hi fi. can anyone recommend a simple/stable front end to use. I liked the look of media monkey but believe its not compatible with squeezebox?. Any recommendations would be gratefully recieved. The PC is running win98.I am aware that flac takes up quite a bit of disk space, and the disk space varies dependant on the music, but can anyone give me rough idea of how much disk space an average cd would take up. Sorry it's been a long time since I've ripped (I use Napster mostly now) but I don't remember it being excessive. In fact, having multiple CD drives in my PC I was able to have a few running simultaneously. [slim] Vortexbox 1.3 and old IBM thinkpad?
I have an old, unused IBM R30 thinkpad (900 MHz Celeron with 256M RAM) that I am considering using to work with my SB3 and a 320g external USB HDD out in the pool area this summer. I am wondering if Vortexbox 1.3 OS would work for me in such a setup? My demands are quite simple. There will be no network to connect too nor will there be any internet access. No ripping is required as it's all done and on my 320G USB HDD. I basically just want a setup that will allow my wife, kids and I the ability to turn on (the computer, the SB3 and the HDD) and then press the remote to play some playlisted music at the pool. Would the VortexBox OS be a worthy candidate to work with my thinkpad as desired? Or is something else better suited? Re: [slim] Vortexbox 1.3 and old IBM thinkpad?
Only issue I know of is the USB Drive as to it working right out of the gate. Memory is a bit low, but Andrew would be able to answer both of those questions/issues. My solution would be to buy a Touch. Then all you need is the Touch and USB drive (read less stuff to take outside). Also is there no means to get WiFi or Ethernet out to the pool from the house? Sounds like there is AC power available, how about a Powerline Ethernet Adapter? This would bring your network out to the pool so you could just use your current SBS server. I put a directional Wardriving antenna on one of my Router antenna ports to cover the pool area with WiFi so any Squeezebox I take out there has connectivity. [slim] How I use my Squeezeboxen
Hi All, Okay, so most people on this forum might not be interested in my writeup on using squeezeboxes in my home (as you are probably already long-time customers). I've been using squeezeboxes since rev 2 came out and owned them all (except the touch). Obviously, I'm a fan or I would have left a long time ago. I started out with the AudioTron (anyone else have one of these gems?), moved on to M-audio products (for their ASIO support), and haven't looked back since switching to SqueezeBoxes. There are so many things that I like about the system, but perhaps the best feature is that I can centralize my music and easily enjoy it in multiple places. It also doesn't hurt that I'm an obsessive, audiophile nerd. I do think Logitech's products are getting better and hopefully more approachable to the non-enthusiast. Towards that end, I wanted to share how I use their products as a whole house audio system. Re: [slim] Can I vent?
I generally listen via my Transporter and control proceedings via iPeng - for the most part (the over voltage bug that sometimes halts proceedings excepted) it's a robust experience using a mature product and I enjoy my listening time. I do think though that many people have been burned with the Duet, and, frankly, through my experience with earlier Squeezebox products and the many posts in the forums, I doubt the user experience is particularly robust when using a newer product. I guess its an unfortunate fact that teething problems are an inevitability. For the less patient among us my recommendation is not to be an early adopter of new products in the Squeezebox range.
