Re: [slim] Why can't I play every song from 1984...

2010-05-18 Thread DigitalMitch

we can only vote to express our desire.

checked CustomBrowse, now I'm home, and it works fine for years (and
decades) which confirms (for me at least) that my tags are correct.
This also confirms that track year is held in the database, distinct
from album year (which I use more often as part of sort albums by
artist then year).

that strikes me that fixing year should therefore be quite easy (but
I'm no programmer).

[slim] New user -answer to stupid question

2010-05-18 Thread ROBBIE BURNS

Hi all, I recently purchased a squeezebox classic which I have connected
to my existing audionote dac/hi fi. My question is a simple one, I am
looking for a front end which will allow me to rip a large cd
collection in flac format and store on an external hdd (1tb) for
playback on my existing hi fi. can anyone recommend a simple/stable
front end to use. I liked the look of media monkey but believe its not
compatible with squeezebox?. Any recommendations would be gratefully
recieved. The PC is running win98.I am aware that flac takes up quite a
bit of disk space, and the disk space varies dependant on the music, but
can anyone give me rough idea of how much disk space an average cd would
take up.

Thanks, Robbie

I'm not sure what you mean by not compatible? I use MM to rip and
organise my music, then it gets picked up by SqueezeBox Server quite
happily - the -tags- are standard in both products so compatible. What
you can't do, however, is double-click on a track in MM and expect it
to play through your Squeezebox.

Yes, I think that's the parameter - thanks for your help.

I know you can do this. Call me lazy (although it's more to do with the
fact that my amp switches itself off and I won't always remember to
switch the Squeezebox off too), but with the timeout feature already
there, it'd be great if it worked with just a bit more flexibility.

Sorry it's been a long time since I've ripped (I use Napster mostly now)
but I don't remember it being excessive. In fact, having multiple CD
drives in my PC I was able to have a few running simultaneously. Note
that the free version of MM has a rip speed limit (2x IIRC) so I would
suggest going gold if you want to speed things up.

Alternatively, use EAC or dbPowerAmp to do the ripping, then organise
in MM.

If you associate all of your media files with MM you should be ok -
except for video (unless that's been added to MM, haven't used it in
awhile.)

Squeezebox server will play the music from your PC on a Squeeze player,
such as the Classic. You can download a software player for your PC if
you'd like, such as SqueezePlay or SoftSqueeze.

[slim] Vortexbox 1.3 and old IBM thinkpad?

2010-05-18 Thread Kellen

I have an old, unused IBM R30 thinkpad (900 MHz Celeron with 256M RAM)
that I am considering using to work with my SB3 and a 320g external USB
HDD out in the pool area this summer.

I am wondering if Vortexbox 1.3 OS would work for me in such a setup?
My demands are quite simple. There will be no network to connect too
nor will there be any internet access. No ripping is required as it's
all done and on my 320G USB HDD. I basically just want a setup that
will allow my wife, kids and I the ability to turn on (the computer,
the SB3 and the HDD) and then press the remote to play some playlisted
music at the pool.

Would the VortexBox OS be a worthy candidate to work with my thinkpad
as desired? Or is something else better suited?

Thanks

Re: [slim] Vortexbox 1.3 and old IBM thinkpad?

2010-05-18 Thread iPhone

Only issue I know of is the USB Drive as to it working right out of the
gate. Memory is a bit low, but Andrew would be able to answer both of
those questions/issues.

My solution would be to buy a Touch. Then all you need is the Touch and
USB drive (read less stuff to take outside). Also is there no means to
get WiFi or Ethernet out to the pool from the house? Sounds like there
is AC power available, how about a Powerline Ethernet Adapter? This
would bring your network out to the pool so you could just use your
current SBS server.

I put a directional Wardriving antenna on one of my Router antenna
ports to cover the pool area with WiFi so any Squeezebox I take out
there has connectivity. I use a Boom for the two of us and take the
A5's out for bigger groups.

Or bad cabling job.

In my former office, well, okay, so that was 12 years ago... the phone
guy did the wiring.. It wasn't even Cat3: he twisted the pairs wrong.
Instead of TX+/TX- and RX+/RX-, making balanced pairs, his wiring was
TX- and RX-, TX+ and RX+ ... instead of a balanced pair that is
designed to reduce interference, he actually created interference. It
-mostly- worked until there was enough utilization to make the packet
loss/retransmit noticable and the network would die a nasty death.

But if that's not an option a static IP address will work.

[slim] How I use my Squeezeboxen

2010-05-18 Thread mrthreeplates

Hi All,

Okay, so most people on this forum might not be interested in my
writeup on using squeezeboxes in my home (as you are probably already
long-time customers).

I've been using squeezeboxes since rev 2 came out and owned them all
(except the touch). Obviously, I'm a fan or I would have left a long
time ago. I started out with the AudioTron (anyone else have one of
these gems?), moved on to M-audio products (for their ASIO support),
and haven't looked back since switching to SqueezeBoxes.

There are so many things that I like about the system, but perhaps the
best feature is that I can centralize my music and easily enjoy it in
multiple places. It also doesn't hurt that I'm an obsessive,
audiophile nerd. I do think Logitech's products are getting better and
hopefully more approachable to the non-enthusiast.

Towards that end, I wanted to share how I use their products as a whole
house audio system.

Here are my details, for your amusement:

http://www.cuttingthebills.com/2010/05/whole-house-streaming-audio-and-more.html

Cheers,

George

Please excuse this vent but I would just like to say thank you to the
developers of these Squeezebox players and to the developer of the
Ipeng remote. Never have I been able to enjoy so much beautiful
quality-sounding music so conveniently placed at my fingertips. As I
sit here in a light rain after planting a few flowers to add to the
beauty of this day , listening to a piece by Debussey I just find
myself very lucky and so appreciative. Also for those on this forum who
helped me understand the Squeeze system and still do come to the rescue
to answer questions. Logitech provides a very complex but quality
product. Many things have to harmonize.

So, thanks for letting me vent like this every once in a while. I have
a special feeling sitting here in the drizzle... Just me and Claude and
 the birds.

I couldn't agree more, one of the main reasons I went with iphone was
for ipeng app. Never listened to my music as much as I do these days.

You're such a FanBoy, just kidding. I couldn't agree more. Squeezebox
has allowed me to spend more time listening instead of searching,
wondering, and going though the wasted time of picking a CD, putting it
in a player, removing it when done, placing it back on the proper shelf,
and repeating the whole process again without rinsing.

And it has put this ease of Music in every room of my home!

I have always said that one can't judge a product by a Forum because
people have the nature to be more motivated to type when they have
something to bitch about then when they are just plain happy. And the
satisfied customers that don't have anything to bitch about are to busy
enjoying Squeezebox and the music to start joy threads or haven't even
taken the time to find a Squeezebox Forum.

Thanks to Sean, Dean, Andy, Mickey, Caleb, Michael, Mark, Ben, et al
that have worked to make Squeezebox what we enjoy everyday!

Re: [slim] Can I vent?

2010-05-18 Thread audiomuze

I generally listen via my Transporter and control proceedings via iPeng
- for the most part (the over voltage bug that sometimes halts
proceedings excepted) it's a robust experience using a mature product
and I enjoy my listening time.

I do think though that many people have been burned with the Duet, and,
frankly, through my experience with earlier Squeezebox products and the
many posts in the forums, I doubt the user experience is particularly
robust when using a newer product. I guess its an unfortunate fact
that teething problems are an inevitability. For the less patient
among us my recommendation is not to be an early adopter of new
products in the Squeezebox range. Once it's all up and working as
intended it's great, it's getting there that's often the issue.
