Re: [slim] Shoutcast favorites keep breaking

2010-06-27 Thread 86atc250r

I've had good luck finding streams on Shoutcast I like then googling to
find their website, where I can usually find their direct URL, then
input that into my favorites manually. No more broken faves for me.
Stupid shoutcast

Pandora favorites work great - never break, at least in my experience
-- even with their free acct.

Rhapsody favorites work great too.

No, pay services don't seem to do this, that I am aware of.
I've had some Favorites links to Last.fm, Pandora, Napster, Slacker for
a long time and they always seem to work.

If you think ShoutCast is bad, try the free version of Live365, now
there is a streaming disaster! ;)

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-06-27 Thread pippin

Well, as I've stated before I also don't believe that the most easy to
understand UI is always the best one because given a lack of space or
complexity you want to display at a time it means deep menus, lots of
dialogs and generally a slower use. Which is inefficient and annoying
for long-term users.

iPeng is supposed to be used long term.

That said: some of the issues mentioned here _will_ go away on iPad.
There is no need to swipe between subpages, there's enough space for
controls to show up a playlist or a list of players/music sources.
There's also enough space to permanently show basic player controls so
there is no need for a NowPlaying screen.
A lot of things will be easier because instead of grouping functions
in different screens you can group them in different areas of the
screen.

That said: the first incarnation of iPeng will not go much further than
doing that plus making appropriate views for iPad. Long term, however, I
believe there are even much better things you can do with that UI
because iPad has the potential to show DIFFERENT elements that are
RELATED simultaneously. The most obvious one of these is probably a
current playlist to which you can drag an item from the library but
there's even more to this then that.
I believe it will take some time until the full potential of the iPad
get's exploited and I'm not only speaking about iPeng here.

dizzysnakepilot;558337 Wrote:

I disagree with that. I don't think the GUI should be dummied down.

The benefit of the iPad is the bigger screen so although more
information can be put onto it simultaneously, at a certain point it
becomes too cluttered if too much is seen at once.

On the other hand, I don't know if it is possible to have a "settings"
panel where the user can choose which panels and modes are visible at
any one time, then each user can customize to their own preferences.

Bottom line, I vote for an interface which works for anyone who reads
the manual rather than for someone who has never used it before.

And this is not a video game, it is a controller. Once the song is
picked, hopefully the new user will "get it" anyway, so it becomes a
non-issue.

Thanks for the reply.

I couldn't find it again searching Shoutcast. I've had it with them
anyway, that's ridiculous. However it was very easy to search by
bitrate there.

Found it searching Radiotime and am once again basking in 320 bliss.
We'll see how long it lasts.

No 'Internet Radio' search on Ipeng and was too lazy to get out of the
easy chair.

Are you telling me pay services are the same?

Re: [slim] iPeng on iPad - How should it look like?

2010-06-27 Thread dizzysnakepilot

I'd like the interface to be less mode oriented, that is, having to keep
track of which screen I am in to perform an operation. This might look
like a single main screen, rather than the 4 or more main screens in
the iPod version.

The multiple screens works ok once you internalize their relationship
by swipes, but i like to give the controller to a guest and say 'put
anything on', which then means I have to stand there and say, 'hit the
blue pentagon for this' and 'swipe this way for that function'

I think an interface that is easy to use for a novice might also be
more convenient for power users as well.

Thanks!

Re: [slim] Shoutcast favorites keep breaking

2010-06-27 Thread toby10

Unfortunately, this is one of the stupid silly things that will always
keep Internet Radio out of the main stream.
Stations themselves change their stream URL's and/or stream aggregators
like ShoutCast change their URL for that stream (usually more often than
the station itself).
All on a whim, no reason nor logic.

Imagine how soon people would stop listening to the radio's in their
cars if there local stations moved around the dial every couple of
weeks?

You will just have to keep changing these in your Favorites.
Go to Internet Radio > Search > Avro and replace your current station
URL.

Yes, SqueezeCommander should run on this device!

Hopefully it's better than the Archos 7", because I had some beta
testers with an Archos 7" and they gave up on this device, because the
device itself was very unstable. :-(

48kbps MP3, 24khz, I believe. I believe it's related to this bug I

this 100ms out of sync is a side effect of the bugfix). I figure it'll
get fixed when 7.6 development gets rolling more, but for now I've had
to pull my Touch from the living room -- NPR is on about 50% of the

You can increase the allowed rate error by increasing the 0.01 in line
1310 of pa_linux_alsa.c PADEV r1508

Code:

  1310:if( (fabs( *sampleRate - sr ) / *sampleRate) > 0.01 )
  1311:{
1312: PA_DEBUG(("%s: Wanted %f, closest sample rate was
%d\n",__FUNCTION__, sampleRate, sr ));
  1313:   PA_ENSURE( paInvalidSampleRate );
  1314:}

If you get the USB soundcard(s) to work with a larger value, post that
value here and I'll add the change to the linux alsa makefiles.
