[slim] Old Menu Items Keep Reappearing
Hello. I have a niggly little problem with persistent menu items. Can anyone offer a solution please? Kit: SB3 (firmware 130)running of a vortexbox (Version: 7.5.0 - r30476 @ Fri Apr 9 17:20:05 EDT 2010) Whatever I do with the menus on the player, BBC and Podcast keep popping back. I've tried resetting the player several times and then organising the menus as I wish them to be. All looks well in the SS menu list (ie no BBC or podcast) but then they reappear in the player menu! [slim] Rebuffering when streaming My Music
I have just replaced an old computer with a new Dell Inspisron Zeno - not very flash but much more processing capability than my previous computer. Before this change all was working perfectly but now it will not stream music from the computer without continuously rebuffering - making it impossible to listen to. Streaming internet radio still works perfectly. Does anyone know of any settings that I need to adjust on the computer? or any other thoughts? The computer his hooked directly (ethernet) to a sky wireless router and the squeeze box controller and reciever are both wireless - no change to this configuration. -- mrchan mrchan's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39315 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80511 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] What's the best remote device moving forward?
I suspected it would be something with an i in front of it. Right now, though, getting an iPad would be sort of overkill for me. I already have a couple of lightweight PC notebooks. I'd need a pretty good reason to get more functionality out of an iPad when I already have those, to think about buying one. The computer his hooked directly (ethernet) to a sky wireless router and the squeeze box controller and reciever are both wireless - no change to this configuration. I had the same problem and the cause was a conflict of wireless channels in my neighbourhood - specifically right next door. Whenever the porn got fired up next door, my transporter would rebuffer ;-). THere is probably an app that came with your wireless card that will do a site survey - basically it'll tell you what networks it sees on what channels. Run that program and find a channel that's not used or has low power on it. THen you'll have to log into your wireless router and change the channel to that one. Hopefully you'll also find that the current channel is one that there is one or more strong local interferers on. I'd say try this first anyhow - it can only help, even if it's not the primary cause of your rebuffering issue. You may also have to re-do this occasionally as people who live near you add wifi networks. -- wayne325 wayne325's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29916 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80511 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] What's the best remote device moving forward?
you asked for it... If you use a phone and disable the phone part of it it could also help a bit. Don't know about Android (never tried to turn off cellular on that one) but on my iPhone it lasts significantly longer with only WiFi than an iPod touch with WiFi so I assume it has a bigger battery. iPod touch did last for a looong time too in the past if not used too much but not so anymore since the iOS4 update, I'm down to 3-4 days on standy only now (used to be weeks) and 1 1/2-2 1/2 days with actual use. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80519 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Streaming vs direct file access
Hello. A technical question, please: can someone comment on the technical/practical differences between the streaming network audio model, as used by Squeezebox and many other commercial devices, compared to a conventional music playback application (such as XMMS/Rhythmbox/Amarok/Aqualung) which accesses music files over a network via NFS or SMB protocol? The latter seems more technically straightforward to me. Maybe you're just not looking in the right place. If you're concerned with waste, buy downloads. It's not my opinion, check out your favorite news source or have a conversation with any performing musician. Any one will tell you the same story, there's little or no money to be made producing albums. Even for those who self-produce and distribute. If you're happy with your own smug rationalization, fine. Given ff, there shouldn't need to be much special about the skins for the 770/800/810 - except sizing. Reading files via NFS/SMB and even UPNP type protocols does not give you the indexing that a proper server would. Ie, there is no NFS or SMB API for please show me all the tracks with genre 'Foo'. Likewise there is no API for tracking playcounts, ratings, etc. If you use simply one player, then I guess that doesn't matter: if the player is sufficiently fat, it could make its own index by scanning files. but if you have more than one player, why have more than one index? How would you synchronize ratings etc. heck, if you only have one client, why even bother with NFS: just attach the hard drive directly to the player. Adding NFS or SMB seems to just complicate things more with a single player. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80521 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Squeezebox Remote
I was sitting last night listening to my Touch on my main system thinking about how I would like my Squeezebox Touch to work with my life style. I think that there should be a battery powered remote with the touch screen capabilities of the Touch and the size (or bigger) of the Touch as the wifi remote for a duet style component box that housed all the workings of the Touch. It would also be nice if the box was able to put out video to a display if available. This way you could use it at the listening position or in the backyard as long as your wifi signal was strong enough to control the unit. It could be a nice feature at a party where everyone has access to the music available on the host's computer or wifi system. Just think out loud. Personally, I would lean against the N800. I like the device, but it just doesn't seem to have much inertia behind it - either from the standpoint of SbS skin development and maintenance or the N800 platform in general.
