[slim] Start on one Squeezebox; continue on another

2010-08-24 Thread gjb

Hello all.

I'm thinking about taking the Squeezebox plunge, but I have a question
that I can't seem to find an answer too.

If I have multiple SB units, can I use one to start listening to
Pandora, then go to a different room, turn on another SB unit and have
that pick up the same Pandora feed? Does this work with MP3s stored on
my computer? To do this do I have to do anything on a computer, or can
I just do this from the units themselves?

I know multiple units can play the same thing, but I didn't know if
they all had to be on and start playing them at the same time.

thanks!

- Yummy Yummy - go for the new looks and delay playlist management

80% voted for the new looks, this is a huge majority, so I'll start on
it right now.
Buttons will be static (but localized) in the first version. Though not
configurable this is still a step in the right direction and something
we can built upon in future versions.
I'm not a friend of mixing in too much new unrelated features when the
focus should be on the looks and playlists afterwards.

There won't be switchable looks as well (for now). I guess a light skin
is not just changing colors but icons/buttons again and thus a lot of
work.
And as said no page switching on the right. That's an error in the
mockup.

Thanks to all for taking part in the poll, this gives important
guidance!

But it makes me think of a couple follow up questions. So, using the

go to the kitchen and turn on the SB Radio and sync to what the Boom is
playing. Can the SB Radio then be used to change the song on both
units, or is it just going to play whatever is happening on the Boom in
the other room?

One more question - I start the SB Boom in the bedroom and turn on
Pandora. From the Boom can I turn on the SB Radio in the other room
and have it start playing Pandora, or do I need to physically go to the
SB Radio and turn it on and sync it? If that doesn't work, can I turn
on and start playing units from the computer or iPeng iPhone app?

Thanks so much for the quick responses!

Yes, the Radio, being one of the new generation of Squeezeboxes, can be
used to control what's playing on both units. In fact, the Radio can be
used to control what's playing on the Boom while something else (or
nothing, for that matter) is playing on the Radio itself..

The Boom, being of the old generation, cannot control other players,
except for those that are already synced to it. You can manage sync
from the WebUI on a computer, or the Radio (or SB Controller or
Touch).

I am not familiar with iPeng myself, but I'm sure someone else can fill
in on that.

Re: [slim] Occasional long pauses during playback - mysqld.exe culprit?

2010-08-24 Thread davidfox2116

I've been having the same problem intermittently. I'm running SB
Server on a Vortexbox Appliance (Fedora Linux) with Custom Browse and
Custom Scan activated. I have about 2500 CD's loaded already but I'm
very much still in add mode. I believe the problem is that rescans
are triggered by new additions and I probably don't have the proper
override settings to avoid them. Custom Scan seems to disable the
generic scan settings. I need to learn more about Custom Scan to find
out if such an override is possible. I'm not sure that it is.

What I've found works best for me is to avoid ripping CD's for at least
an hour prior to a listening session. I also run overnight clear
library and rescan everything about once a week. The problem still
appears occasionally but far less frequently. It is annoying and I
would prefer greater control over rescans.

P.S. Martin - I think we know each other - at least if you're the same
Martin Edney I knew from NYC. I just sent you a friend request.

Synced players acts as one player so changes can be made on any of them
.

As described all the new players with the color display
(controller, touch, radio, squeezeplay) can control any player on the same
server, besides themselves, icluding all old models too .

There is also a cool plugin called other players where you can grab
the playlist from another player or send the playlist to another player
with out syncing, I use it sometimes.

I have a Netgear ReadyNas DUO and I find the performance of SC to be
quite disappointing. It can play music, but a lot of operations are

fast and I would be very happy if the NAS can perform at this level. I
don't have a large music collection, about 30G of flacs/mp3s.

Reading this thread, I am curious about the performance of the Synology
and the small form factor PCs such as fit-pc and vortexbox comparing to
the ReadyNas Duo. Amazon is currently selling the fit-pc (older model?)
for $199. I am wondering whether it's an adequate system to run SC. I am
really intrigued by the 6 watt power usage (my computer in OFF mode
 consumes 6 watts!).

How does the fit-pc, synology, and vortex compare with the a standard
 P4-2.26 system (single-core, no HT)?
I originally got the ReadyNAS Duo and quickly switched to a ReadyNAS
Pro (Amazon.com took back the Duo no questions asked). Squeezebox
Server went from sucking on the Duo to being awesome on the Pro. The
Pro is way more expensive than other options that might be just as
good, but as has been pointed out on these forums before, you just
don't hear anyone complaining about running Squeezebox Server on their
ReadyNAS Pro, which has to be worth something.

Maybe you should be addressing an Apple forum?

I wouldn't hold my breath but I think the question of open is
definitely in Apple's court...

You could make a plug-in yourself but I think you would be subject to a
lawsuit from Apple.

Can you even produce M3U playlists with iTunes? And, if you can, can you
then use that playlist with some other non-iTunes software on that same

Sorry, I have no experience with iTunes, so I can't help you with any
of that.

However, if you can get a working m3u, you can just copy it into your
sbs playlists folder.

That said, MusicIP got a lot easier to install after those of us who
complained went through the process. It's also easier if you're running

Re: [slim] I see vortexbox in a vm as a good solution

2010-08-24 Thread dsdreamer

Inspired by this thread I thought I'd give Vortexbox a spin as a guest
OS under Ubuntu 10.04, using VmWare's free VMplayer.

This was way easier than trying out the distro on bare metal, which I
have done once before. I was highly impressed by how complete and
functional Vortexbox is these days. Yummy, in fact :-)

Since my host is a laptop, I don't have a reason to want keep a Virtual
Vortexbox running on such a machine, but I did use it to rip a new CD
into my collection which it did efficiently and correctly.

Overall, if I were to switch to Vortexbox in a dedicated machine as a
storage appliance, I think I'd still install it on bare metal, but as a
test environment VMware/Virtualbox has considerable merit. Furthermore,
I have enjoyed getting reacquainted with Vortexbox, which I may not
have bothered to do had it entailed dedicating a machine to it just for
testing purposes.

Best regards,

Charles.
