Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2010-08-26 Thread bluegaspode

Hi guys,

to keep up with frequent updates here is a new one, available today
from the AppStore. Guess there's cool stuff for anyone in there:

SCREENSAFER MODE:[/B] IF JUST TAP THE BIG ALBUM ART THEN SQUEEZEPAD
SWITCHES TO SCREENSAFER MODE: HUGE ALBUM ART, HUGE FONTS - PERFECT TO
WATCH FROM FAR AWAY.
THIS MODE SUPPORTS BOTH LANDSCAPE AND PORTRAIT SO YOU CAN LEAVE YOUR
IPAD IN THE DOCK.
IF PEOPLE WOULDN'T ALWAYS HAND AROUND AN IPAD ON PARTIES *G* THAT WOULD
BE A GREAT ADDITION TO YOUR NEXT PARTY ... AND IF THERE WAS NO 'HOME'
BUTTON WE COULD EVEN MAKE THIS SCREEN PASSWORD PROTECTED ... ALAS ...
NEXT LIFE MAYBE ;)

*MYSQUEEZEBOX.COM INTEGRATION:* ON THE SETTINGS SCREEN YOU CAN NOW
CONFIGURE SQUEEZEPAD TO CONNECT TO MYSQUEEZEBOX.COM. THIS MAKES YOUR
LOCAL-SERVER OBSOLETE (IF YOU DON'T USE YOUR OWN MUSIC LIBRARY).
*PLEASE NOTE*: SWITCHING PLAYER BETWEEN MYSB.COM AND YOUR LOCAL SERVER
ISN'T SUPPORTED THOUGH - YOU STILL NEED TO SWITCH PLAYERS DIRECTLY ON
THE DEVICE FROM A LOCAL SERVER TO MYSB.COM IF NEEDED.
SO THIS IS PERFECT IF YOU USE MYSB.COM ONLY (OR RARELY) OR HAVE OTHER
MEANS OF SWITCHING PLAYERS AUTOMATICALLY (LIKE SRVPOWERCTRL
HTTP://CODE.GOOGLE.COM/P/SRVRPOWERCTRL/).

[B]OTHER STUFF

- the 'Extras' menu is hidden if you don't have plugins that put some
  menu-items in there.

- Spotify context menus now have playlist controls (like 'Add Next').
Make sure to install the latest version of the Spotify plugin on your
  server to get this feature.

- 'Now Playing' artwork is supported for 7.3-servers now - making
life a bit nicer there. Please note that 7.3 is still not officially
supported and I give no guarantee of which feature are working and
  which not.

As written on other threads I'm working on a new UI right now (take a
peek here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81403) which
makes good progress so I still think this will be finished by the end
of next week (+10 days Apple review process).

I'll have to agree with the posters above. Squeezepad is progressing in
a rapid way and the author cares about listening to his customers and
developing towards their requests. I must admit I was a bit sceptical
before I bought it, but it's working more than ok. Now that the
interface is being sexed-up, I feel it will become a serious competitor
to a future release of iPeng HD.

And as said above, we're talking about pocket-change here. These guys
are devoting their precious time in order for us to have a way better
way of controlling our Squeezeboxes. Buy both of them and see which one
you like best in the end. It could be until christmas before iPeng HD is
released. In the mean time you've enjoyed controlling your system with
iPad. By doing so you'll do the whole community a favour, as both
authors will give their best in outclassing the competition.

This is exactly what I've been looking for, bluegaspode please
incorporate that page swiping to the album art for playlist and player
management. Well, that would be a lot like iPeng... hmm.

Pippin seems to be keen on the idea but I understand if you aren't down
to encroach on that design.

Regardless, keep up the good work! I've invested in both products and
would do so again, I use them hourly.

It's the same for wasapi as the tutorial shows, use -L and then start ss

Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

Hi Bluegaspode,
Just did the update to 1.3 and it seems that I have lost all my
artwork. It was there in the previous version, and still shows up in
iPeng on the same iPad.

If you scroll quickly through a list of albums you see the grey disc
placeholder icons for each album as they flash past, but once you stop
scrolling these are quickly replaced with blank spaces where the
artwork should be.

Any ideas?

I'm stubborn about this one :D ... no swiping on the cover art.

My wife doesn't like that in iPeng so won't happen in SqueezePad
regardless of whether the whole other world is using this concept *g*.

Anyway - there will be playlists and better player management even
without swiping.

Oh yes, and shuffle / repeat buttons wouldn't hurt either
I had a short informal poll on the other thread about that some time
ago.
Most people said they hardly change those settings at all ... and for
the rare times they needed it, it was good enough to have those options
in the Settings menu (where you can change shuffle/repeat also with the
current version of SqueezePad).
So - if you use it often that you think having direct buttons are
needed than at least I'd like to know your usage pattern.

Good work on the latest version, and indeed i am looking forward to your

By now (after new design has been implemented) I have three major
wishes that I thinking would be minor for you to do:

Love the new look! Way to go on that. Can't wait to see how the
application develops in the future. It's great that you added the
shortcuts to artists, albums and genres on the main screen. My only
request would be that you add a new music button as well since I use
that 90% of the time. Once the advanced playlist management is added,
SqueezePad will fulfill almost 100% of my needs. To get to 100% I'd
just need that wake-on-lan feature added and some way to hibernate my
server easier :). Just me being greedy. Keep up the great work!

Also I'd like to know what server version you are using.
What about icons on the 'Radios' menu ? What happens when you play a

I'm at home in two hours and could start fixing if I have logs by then
- possibly even providing you with a beta built so that its fixed
instantly for you.

Good work on the latest version, and indeed i am looking forward to your
new design. Right decision to do that first.
By now (after new design has been implemented) I have three major
wishes that I thinking would be minor for you to do:
 - rename 'The current playlist' to 'Playing now'
 - Have playing access on main page
 - On Playing Now list, mark which song is playing.

Really minor point, but whatever you call 'The current playlist' can
you capitalise the beginning of each word to match everything else in
the My Music menu?

Thanks!

The wording is sent from the SB-Server (to have it localized) and I
couldn't find a better string :(

Anyway - you can help yourself here !
In the root-folder of your server there is a 'strings.txt'.
Search for 'CURRENT_PLAYLIST' in there and change the wording to
whatever you like. Guess you need to restart the server afterwards.

Re: [slim] VortexBox reviewed in Hi-Fi Choice magazine

2010-08-26 Thread iPhone

We can all see his short coming, Technology! The reviewer didn't even
investigate that with VB one doesn't need to know Linux. One doesn't
use a CLI with VB unless one wants to. One uses the built in WebUI with
all the shares on auto-detect. I know enough Linux to use a server
version but I don't because VB makes it so easy to move my files from
my MACs and Windows PCs with the built-in WebUI.

I guess the reviewer didn't both to check what support was available
from the Manufacture, the Vortexbox website, and Forum. One simple
glance at the first support pages shows even the most computer OS
illiterate person that no knowledge of Linux or use of CLI is needed.
Simple easy instructions that only require the use of a keyboard on
another PC on the network. Basically, one sets up the VB and forgets
it. All interaction can be from any PC on the Network if one choices
especially if one is ripping with something like dBpowerAmp on a
Windows PC.

He is basically a poor reviewer when it comes to equipment he doesn't
use or understand. Instead of looking to see how the VB is or can be
used, he starts looking for unnecessary workarounds and puts another OS
on the VBA. He makes no attempt to discover the true beauty of a set it
up and forget Music Server.

Then to top everything off, he is back on the expensive 'Magical' SATA
cables. He just can't let that go. He reminds me of an AudioFool not an
Audiophile.

You might try squeezeslave. It runs in a DOS window (or as a service on
XP - possibly on v and 7).
One interesting thing about squeezeslave is that there's an ASIO
version - this outputs directly to an ASIO sound device and doesn't go
through Window's direct sound mixer.
IMO, the easiest /cheapest way to get an ASIO sound device is a
Behringer UCA202, which connects via USB and has RCA stereo and SPDIF
outputs.

You should be able to use the standard squeezeslave, though, and not
get suffering sound. Maybe think about ASIO as an upgrade. The UCA's
around $30.

I fried my SB3 powersupply when I plugged it in in Europe (with an

Anyway, after some searching I found a mail order source for the right

These folks mostly seem to sell to other businesses, but they will sell
to individuals as well, preferably with funds transfer from your bank

It's nice all our work selecting hardware components for the VortexBox

[slim] Squeezeplay/Softsqueeze for Android

2010-08-26 Thread Fozzy

I already have Squeeze Commander for my Android smartphone (HTC Hero)
which enables me to control all the squeezeboxes in the house but at
the moment I have no way to plug headphones in to the phone and listen
to music via Squeezebox server.

It occurred to me software player could be written for Android which
would stream from Squeezebox server and play via the built-in audio. I
am not sure if the Android screen is close to any of the other displays
but actually an application with no display at all would be fine as the
existing Squeeze Commander application would be able to control it.

Other than that I now have a squeezebox classic at my desk for
headphone listening and the sound quality is so much better than from
the PC's integrated sound card.

I am preparing a mix for a house party and set the server to play in
shuffle. The iPad will be just sitting on a table for others to view
and perhaps mess around with. So I was thinking the shuffle and repeat
buttons would be useful.

But that also brings up another point, is there a way a party mode
could be implemented that allows people limited functionality unless
they input a password? So people aren't fooling around and
modifying/deleting playlists or wreaking other havoc? That could be
held for a much later release though, no rush.

Re: [slim] Start on one Squeezebox; continue on another

2010-08-26 Thread Fozzy

I often using synchronisation to transfer the music from one room to
another. There is a slight break when you first turn on
synchronisation but after that all is fine.

As an example I can be listening to something on the boom is the
bedroom and then add the classic downstairs in the lounge as a sync
slave whereupon, as long as the classic is turned on, they start
playing the same thing and either box can control playback. If I then
turn off the boom the classic downstairs continues to play.

I don't have any of the newer squeezeboxes that can directly control
another squeezebox other than via synchronisation and I don't know the
iPhone application. I do have the SqueezeCommander Android application
though which can control all the squeezebox including turning them on
and off, editing the playlists, managing synchronisation etc. so the
API is there on Squeezebox Server to do this which means if the iPhone
application doesn't do it already it could do with some development.
