To get more info in the log file set plugin.bbciplayer.parser and
plugin.bbciplayer.rtmp to INFO in Webui Settings/Advanced/Logging and
then click Apply.

Then try to play a Listen Again program station you have not tried
before.

Re: [slim] New station suggestion

2010-08-31 Thread James Vertigan

Pretty sure, Toby.

When opening the stream via the Reciva website, it opens RealPlayer and
gives this URL: http://174.142.150.12:8777/ - which points to a
Shoutcast DNAS Status page.

That is the link I've given to RadioTime, I'm hoping it's the right one
for the stream.

Thanks for the tip. I have a command line Linux server - what is
command line the equivalent to applying these settings via the GUI?

I'll have a try later when I get home.

I would not recommend trying to edit the prefs file.

You can access the GUI from any browser using http:server ip
address:9000 - the browser does not have to be on your Linux server -
for example an iPhone/iPad, netpc etc.

[slim] Cheap active speakers?

2010-08-31 Thread TheLastMan

I am looking for a pair of small, 2 way, active stereo speakers for a
used Receiver I am being offered (the owner is splitting a Duet -
keeping the Controller but replacing the Receiver with a Transporter).

The Receiver / Speaker combo will be going into my daughter's room.
She has an iPod Touch with iPeng already.

Budget circa £75 ($100)

My daughter's criteria in order of priority are:
1. Price
2. Sound Quality
3. Good looks
4. Size
5. Sound level (do not need to go loud)

Boom equivalent sound quality would be great. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

2010-08-31 Thread maggior

In our kitchen, we use a Klipsch iGroove HG. It has an iPod dock on it,
but it also has a line in. The sound is great - a little better than
the Boom IMO. It's small and sharp looking. It isn't made any more,
but I think you can find deals on refurbs or used.

The current version is called the iGroove SXT. It's a bit above your
budget ($150). Perhaps you can find one in a store and audition the
sound quality.

Re: [slim] Where have all the SB2's gone?

2010-08-31 Thread mlsstl

I think many of the SB3 and prior model users are simply happy campers
and tend to keep their players until the unit just dies.

One trend that is widely evident on this forum at least is that a good
percentage of users have multiple players. I know when my Touch
arrived, the SB3 in the main system was immediately switched to a
second system. The only way I might sell it is if I snagged another
Touch for an extraordinary low price during one of those little
publicized, short-lived promo code sales that pop up every now then.

So I don't think it's hard to see why SB2s 3s are fairly rare on eBay
and similar sites.

As has been said the SB2 was only out 7 months when it was replaced by
the SB3 so there is a lower number of used ones available. The SB2 also
makes a great unit for use in Custom Projects so when they do pop up for
sale, they get snapped up fast.

Yes, I know the budget is challenging, but that is how much she has to
spend (and why I am asking here!). Klipsch stuff is not common in the
UK, but actually an iPod dock with speakers and an AUX input might be
the way to go, as she could dock her iPod as well on one power lead.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will do some digging.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will do some digging.

With the iGroove, the line-in jack is located right next to the iPod
dock connector. So, in order to dock the iPod, you would have to
unplug the cable connected to the line-in. Not an optimal solution.
I'm not sure how the new version is laid out.

You can also use an old set of powered PC speakers you may have laying
about. I have an old set from a Gateway 2000 machine from way back
when that work well. Though they probably wouldn't rank highly on the
good looks factor :-).

With some digging, I think you'll find what you want - I don't think
you are way out in your expectations.

Perhaps somebody from the UK will respond with some suggestions that
are readily available there.

[slim] Help Configuring SB using ssh

2010-08-31 Thread Howard Passman

I'm using ssh to configure all of my SB's. I use 3 wireless routers as
access points in my house. I want the device to use the same static
settings for each wireless device and in the case of the Touch, use the
same addressing for the ethernet. Everything works pretty well, but
somehow at least one setting still defaults to dhcp. Here's my
settings...

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback

mapping eth0
script /etc/network/if_mapping
auto eth0=TRENDnet
iface TRENDnet inet static
address 10.0.0.111
network 10.0.0.0
broadcast 10.0.0.255
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.0.0.1
dns 198.77.116.8
up echo 'nameserver 198.77.116.8' /etc/resolv.conf

iface linksys inet static
address 10.0.0.111
network 10.0.0.0
broadcast 10.0.0.255
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.0.0.1
dns 198.77.116.8
up echo 'nameserver 198.77.116.8' /etc/resolv.conf

iface linksys2 inet static
address 10.0.0.111
network 10.0.0.0
broadcast 10.0.0.255
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 10.0.0.1
dns 198.77.116.8
up echo 'nameserver 198.77.116.8' /etc/resolv.conf

After I cycle through all three access points one of them always
defaults to dhcp and I get a line in the script above that adapter that
says auto wlan=xx(router)

Basically, I would like to use the same static settings for ethernet or
wlan.

Any and all help would be appreciated

Howard

Which version of the plugin are you using?

Does it work if you enable prefer wma on the settings page for the
plugin?

Re: [slim] Which Product for Second Squeezebox?

2010-08-31 Thread arztde

Some other ideas: Try the O2 Joggler. There is an integrated speaker
inside but you also can use it with active speakers. Some advantage you
have a touch screen what is bigger than the SB-Touch so inside the
office you can use it also as a photo frame.
There was a offer from O2 UK for 50 pounds but now you get it sometimes
from ebay and with a little easy change you can install squeezeplay on
it. Navigation is the same like the Duet controller.

No sometimes you get it in the
bay:http://cgi.ebay.de/o2-Joggler-Digital-Photo-frame-Calender-radio-news-text-/260654883962?pt=UK_AudioElectronicsVideo_Video_TelevisionSetTopBoxes

I also suggest the SB Classic if you get it. More than a second
receiver, because you have a wonderfull display. Its somehow a future
invest.

Re: [slim] VortexBox reviewed in Hi-Fi Choice magazine

2010-08-31 Thread iPhone

Nonreality;573167 Wrote:
Ok so I'm in the dark on this. Make fun of me if you want but after all
that I'm a bit confused. Is it linux or will it work with a old
computer with windows? also can I make it use dbpoweramp as the
burner? See I'm really confused on how it all works now that I've read
 his review. ahha

Also no matter what, it was a good review on Vortexbox.

Vortexbox is a computer OS. Vortexbox Appliance is a turn key Music
Server running the Vortexbox OS. If you take an old PC and install
Vortexbox it wipes the old drive including the OS and installs the
Linux Fedora based Vortexbox OS. The install creates an auto ripping
Music Server. Once Vortexbox is installed, just insert a CD and play it
on a Squeezebox five minutes later. No you can't make it use dBpowerAmp
because the PC is now using Linux not Windows. Experienced Linux users
could install WINE and then run dBpowerAmp but why bother when its
easier to use the built in ripper or just use dBpowerAmp on a Windurs
PC and move the ripped files across the network onto the Vortexbox. I
have had three CDs that dBpowerAmp refuses to rip. My Vortexbox ripped
all three of them (but I still rip my CDs on a Windurs PC using
dBpowerAmp).

While the review is generally factual, the reviewer has no idea what
the real or general idea of the Vortexbox Appliance is or the free
Vortexbox OS. The reviewer doesn't understand that one doesn't need to
know, use, or understand Linux to use Vortexbox. The reviewer actually
wrote a follow up where he stated that he is still using the box
(computer part) but wiped the Vortexbox OS and put Windows on it. His
review also hints that he has no understanding of Digital Audio. He
talks about the 'satisfying sound' of the Vortexbox. The Vortexbox has
no sound and can't add anything to or take anything from the audio. It
is a digital file server. It feeds an exact FLAC digital data file copy
of the CD to an external Network Media Player (unless one uses the
build-in Vortexbox player). He states that 'tunes emerge flawlessly
with no evidence of constriction or audible limitations' when again the
Vortexbox is not an audio device or Network Media Player in its main
function or the way he used it. He speaks of it as if it is an active
audio component in the analog chain when it serves digital files to
Network Media Players. Vortexbox could be thought of as all ones CDs
placed in a single place in an organized easy to use format IE one big
jewel case holding all ones CDs to be feed to a Network Media Player
without ever opening another CD Jewel Case once its been auto ripped by
the Vortexbox Server. Do tunes 'flawlessly emerge' from CDs, I don't
think so as CDs are digital audio media.

Re: [slim] Cheap active speakers?

2010-08-31 Thread RonM

If you're looking for a 2.0 set, the Bose Companion 2 series II are
great speakers, can be found on sale (regularly about $150, I see them
on for $99 in Canada).

For 2.1, the Logitech speakers referenced above are solid.

Re: [slim] Cheap active speakers?

2010-08-31 Thread maggior

I heard those Bose speakers in a store recently and was impressed by
them. Generally, I'm not a big Bose fan. Their gear sounds good, but
I always find something that sounds better or just as good for less.

However, for $99 (which is what Amazon is currently selling them for),
I think it's a good deal. My impression was that the sound was crisp
and balanced with well rounded bass.

They have the basic PC speaker look - nothing special, but not ugly
either.
