Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] SqueezeCommander 0.9 for Android
L.S, My main annoyance with SqueezeCommander is that it's too hard to kill. I'll use it at home which often leaves it running, recognizable by the icon in the Android notification bar. So I'm at work and see it's still running. I want to kill it. I select the app and I get Connecting to the Wifi network (that's not going to work. Then I have to press 'back' to abort the connect, then 'menu', then 'Exit' and then the silly app starts to question me if I'm really sure, before I'm finally rid of it... This is annoying and it happens a lot. I'd like a 'Abort quit' button on the 'Connecting to the wifi network' dialog, or make it so that it doesn't insist on running in the background all the time. An option to have it commit suicide if it hasn't seen its home wifi network for a while would be great too. Add a setting to get rid of the Exit warning at the very least, I'd say... Why don't you just press Clear in the Notification area to remove the SqueezeCommander icon? This icon is just a shortcut to start SqueezeCommander. It does NOT mean that the App is still running in background. Using the Exit button (=hard killing the app) makes no sense, really. It is strongly discouraged because it will make your phone slower, consume more CPU power and hence drain the battery faster. http://geekfor.me/faq/you-shouldnt-be-using-a-task-killer-with-android/ BTW: SqueezeCommander uses the standard Android behaviour: Pressing HOME == This will bring you back to the home screen. SqueezeCommander will be stopped (i.e. it will not generate any network traffic or consume CPU power) and eventually be removed from the memory if Android needs RAM for other apps. If you choose to go back to SqueezeCommander, this will be very fast, because Android does not need to reload the whole App, but it can easily resume it. Pressing BACK == This will kill and remove the SqueezeCommander activity from the memory. If you choose to go back to SqueezeCommander, it will be a bit slower because Android needs to reload the App from persistent memory to RAM, initialize the components, SqueezeCommander needs to search for servers, connect and so on... So, the bottom line is: - *DO NOT use the Exit button* - *DO NOT use the Exit button* - *DO NOT use the Exit button* - Normally, press *HOME* to leave SqueezeCommander - If you know that you don't need SqueezeCommander for a longer period of time and you want to force its removal from memory, press *BACK* The Exit button is only meant for situations where SqueezeCommander is somehow blocked and does not work anymore. Normally, this should not happen. -- flattermann Christian Home of 'SqueezeCommander' (http://www.squeezecommander.com) - The SqueezeBox Remote Control App for Android flattermann's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33169 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69352 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

peter;584252 Wrote: Silly me. I'm a new Android user and I still have to get used to its way of doing things. I disabled the notification icon, there's an SC icon on my home screen already. Well, I do understand you concerns! Having a multitasking capable OS also has some severe caveats. If you install a poorly designed App, e.g. an App that does not shutdown / stop properly, *it will* dramatically reduce your battery life and slow down the whole device. E.g. there is a SqueezeBox App for Android that does not shutdown its service properly, even if you leave the App. That means that the service will constantly try to get updates from the SBS server in the background until Android finally kills the process. (But this may take several hours, depending on your usage.) So it *is* really important to design Apps as Good Android Citizens, otherwise the users will have a bad experience. As a user, you cannot do much about it, because it can be difficult to track down Apps/Services that drain your battery. (You may take a look at Home/Menu/Settings/PhoneInfo/Battery for a rough estimate on which App consumes most power.) Similarly, if I have the player connected to MySB.com, I can start up SBS and then, from within SBS or by the Duet controller, connect the player to SBS. From what I understand, this functionality is not implemented in SqComm, that's fine, but are you saying that it can never be? (EDIT: Sorry, now I see, you say until this is implemented in SqComm, ok fine, thanks). I'd really like to ditch the Duet controller, since it has loads of network problems. A player can be in one of two states: A) It is currently connected to a server (SBS or MySB) B) It is currently not connected to any server If the player is connected to your SBS, you can use SqueezeCommander to switch it to MySB and vice versa. (Just long-press on the player entry and select Music Source) If you shutdown your SBS while a player is connected to it, the player may become unconnected. (I.e. it is not connected to SBS nor MySB). In this case, you cannot use SqueezeCommander to reconnect the player, yet. I will include this feature in a future version, but I cannot promise you a specific timeline... For now, you need to use either SqueezeConfig or the Controller to connect directly to the player and tell the player that it should connect to SBS/MySB. I've been investigating buying a Tripath-based system and just had a chat with a helpful chap at Item Audio (UK). Yes, Volume on Zero/Off. Its not really a pre-amp function because its only for the Touch/SB3 and no other devices. But the Touch or SB3 will drive an amp or powered speakers because it has variable line level out on the Analog RCAs. I just put a small system together for one of my son's friends that is a Touch, Adcom GFA-555SE, and a pair of Vandersteen Model 2CE Signature II Speakers. The Touch is the volume control and drives the 555SE perfectly. Jewel Sleeves would have been ideal, except for their price of $0.40 apiece, or $400 for 1000 pieces. The JazzLoft.com sleeves are more reasonably priced at $0.15 each, and look like an excellent solution if you still want frequent access to your CDs. But the four layers of 4 mil plastic in the JazzLoft sleeves seemed bulkier than was necessary for my purposes. Then I discovered the super thin (1-2 mil) mylar plastic resealable sleeves used to protect entire CDs in their jewel cases. Turns out that they're ideal for minimalist storage without the jewel case. Everything fits nicely in these mylar sleeves, including one or two discs, the front booklet, and the rear insert with the flaps folded out flat. They can still go on a shelf with the text on the flaps easily visible just by running your fingers across them. They take up even less space than the JazzLoft sleeves. If you're worried (I'm not) about the CD surface touching the mylar or printed materials, you can always put the discs in super cheap paper sleeves before putting them in the mylar. For mini-LP style cardboard CD covers, the whole thing fits inside the mylar, helping preserve the cardboard from degradation. And the best part is that the mylar sleeves are quite inexpensive. At Sleevetown.com for example, 500 of them sell for $18 (less than $0.04 each) plus shipping. Sleevetown even notes This sleeve may also be used to store the entire contents of a typical jewel case including back tray card and booklet for perfectly flat storage. (See Resealable Mylar Single Outer at http://www.sleevetown.com/plastic-cd-sleeves.shtml). For me, it seems like the best solution I've encountered thus far. I've experimented with a few I already have around, and I have a large quantity order on the way. If it all works out, I'll be hauling a couple hundred pounds of jewel case plastic to my local recycling collection facility. -- TiredLegs TiredLegs's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6201 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80369 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Problem: Skipping Effect Heard During Flac Playback
Hi Jimzak I'm running SB server 7.5.1 on an Atom with external HDD, XP SP3 also. The network is wired through Homeplug. I've an SB3 and a Boom, and recently noted the same problem as yourself. I'm sure its a synchronization problem but interestingly both players skip at times trying to re-sync, rather than just one trying to catch up, as it were. I tried getting rid of various plugins but it made no difference. The problem seems to have been solved by setting the SB3 to maintain synchronization while playing, but setting the Boom NOT to maintain sync while playing. For whatever reason, its worked for me. -- plasticator2 plasticator2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31261 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82779 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Near Total Squeezebox Meltdown
After moving to a new house and purchasing a new stereo system, I set up my Squeezebox classic (v3) which has worked like a charm for 3 years. The list of problems immediately became huge. Bottom line, i can not get any music out of my device on either my Bose, which I had been using for previous years, or new stereo. I need to know is my device somehow fried? Here are the issues: --Device immediately connected to new wireless AND wired network --Device communicated with software; when I played a track through device, the software indicates taht the song is playing...HOWEVER --I could not get any music to play through any of my music systems --The display shows the track title, but does not show any the track progressing; it appears to be paused, but on software, the song is playing and the album continues to play to the end on the software, even though the display remains stuck on the initial track --When I could get the track to play on the device (i.e., I see progress), horrible feedback comesthrough my stereo or Bose radio --Whenever I unplug or jiggle the RCA cords at the ports, the device powered off --I've tried multiple RCA cords trying to isolate the problem; nothing changes --Occasionally the display shows neon gibberish; I reboot, and the display returns to normal. I run my music off a ReadyNAS device; I've tried running Squeezebox on both wired and wireless. It reads both networks, recognized the server, recognizes the software. Everything seems normal, but I can't get a single note to play through my systems. This device worked up to the day I moved. Did I somehow fry the device? Could there be a software explanation? Thanks in advance.
