[slim] Squeezeplay prevents screen sleep

2011-01-30 Thread cakes

Hi,

I'm using Squeezeplay on OSX (10.6), and I've noticed that it prevents
the screen of my iMac to sleep. Normally my screen goes to sleep after
10 min, but with Squeezeplay, it keeps on all the time. Also, when I
force my screen off (Lock Screen), after 10 sec the screen pops on
again due to Squeezeplay. I tried the Screen settings in Squeezeplay,
but without success. I assume this is because Squeezeplay wants to keep
the system awake.

I'm trying to limit the power consumption of all my electronic toys,
and putting a screen off is definitely one of the things to do here. So
it would be great if this behaviour of Squeezeplay could be changed.

Thanks for your reply! :)

The problem is only present when using my phone as a remote. When I use
the IR-remote, Spotify works perfectly.

When I browse Spotify playlists, long click on a song and click play,
should I then be playing the whole playlist, or does that add the song
to a temporary que/playlist?

My experience is that if I select one song from a Spotify playlist, it
plays that song over and over again. I would prefer if the whole
playlist was played (like when I play a song using the IR-remote).

If I have navigated to a Spotify playlist and click the home button
to do something else, upon re-opening SqueezeCommander the now playing
view is shown. IMO it would be desirable to go back to where I was in
the menu, so that I don't have to re-navigate back to where I was.

Thanks,

I can see it on my network when looking at the settings for my wireless

Can anyone please help.

That may be cause by a problem with the ARP cache update (i.e. the
router still tries to send the network packets via the WLAN interface
instead of the LAN interface).

With the LAN network cable connected to the Receiver, please try to
shutdown all components (Receiver, Server, Router) and restart them in

Re: [slim] 7.53 not recreating my.cnf

2011-01-30 Thread bobkoure

The tables I setup for SBS were INNODB / latin1 as that seemed to be
what the built in MySQL in SBS was using, and, at the time I was
aiming at just making it work.

Now, I'm reading about MySQL performance.
It looks like SBS is not at all a transactional system, and, as such,
INNODB is going to be slower (transactional safety) than ISAM.
Does that make sense?
Is there any reason I can't just switch? I realize that SQL is
supposedly platform neutral, but that's only if you don't use any
extensions. I've no idea if MySQL INNODB has extensions that ISAM
doesn't. Any idea?
Thanks!

You didn't set up the tables yourself, did you? Squeezebox Server
should have done that when it was first run.

I'm not sure if you'd see a noticeable difference by switching anything
to ISAM. The tables that SbS works with aren't very large.

[slim] MusicIP data on ramdisk

2011-01-30 Thread bobkoure

You can set the MusicIP service to read/write the mip datafile wherever,
just by modifying mmm.ini.
...But there -doesn't- seem to be a way to set the MusicIP app to use a
data file in a non-standard place.
Not something you'd care about if you just use the service, but if you
-do- use the app there's a lot to be said for having them both access
the same data file.

I've noticed that clicking on the data file brings up the app. In
general, when you click on a data file in Windows, it just invokes the
associated app with the full path to whatever you clicked on as the
first parameter.
So there -is- a way to move the data file and have the app access it in
a non-standard place.

You can just change the shortcut that links to the app. Right click on
it, pick 'properties' and append a path to your new/moved data file in
the 'target' field. So, for example, I changed my 'target' from
-C:\Program Files\MusicIP\MusicIP Mixer\MusicMagicMixer.exe-
to
-C:\Program Files\MusicIP\MusicIP Mixer\MusicMagicMixer.exe
R:\MusicIP Mixer\default.m3lib-

Apologies if you already know this stuff. It's just that, with memory
being so cheap these days, ramdisks are starting to make good sense.
If you don't have a ramdisk, but do have the memory for one, and are
using a win32 server, check out the 'Dataram ramdisk'

[slim] SB keeps disconnecting from my server

2011-01-30 Thread rcapuano

Hello All,

I am hoping that someone can help me out. I have a brand new Mac Book
and I have received a Sb about 3 years ago. I have not had any issues
with it until I moved out and got my own place. My SB connects to SB
center without any problems and I can listen to my Rhapsody account all
day long. When I want to listen to my Itunes account, it will tell me
that it cannot connect to server although I downloaded sb server and
have it running at all times my computer is on. I always have to
restart my laptop for it to reconnect or I have to reconfigure my SB
every time. It only will play for about 10 minutes and then it will
shut back off and I will have to start the process all over again. I
even attached an ethernet cable to my router and it still doesnt work
when I want to play my itunes. I hope someone can help me with this.
It has started to get really annoying.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing all of your feedback
and suggestions.

Thanks!

You need to fix your DHCP server, your player is asking for an IP
address, DHCP is what assigns IP's, usually from your router.
I presume all of your network devices connect through a router?

I'd also suggest running SBS Control Panel Diagnostics, what is
reported for all ports, pings, IP's? I'll bet there are some failed

of work and will certainly delay a lot of other things if I do it.

Hence I should really have included it in the poll to learn about the

If you talk about any funnies that are different from what iPhone or

argument to do that.

iPhone 3G with recent OS versions (and I don't even use 4.x on it) is

 What specifically do you mean?
If you talk about any funnies that are different from what iPhone or
SQueezePlay are doing there really needs to be a very, very good
 argument to do that.

iPhone 3G with recent OS versions (and I don't even use 4.x on it) is
one of the most painfully slow experiences I've had with smartphones,
yes, indeed, I was just extremely happy when I upgraded out of that.

In romania the ipeng or mainly the iphone did deny me to connect to a
unprotected linksys router so i could not test it there. And today id
did play a little with it.

I need first to read for example in instructions how to group and
ungroup Players. This is more intuitive in SlimControl. But i slowly
saw SlimControl grow up and for this maybee need never any
instruction.
So let me play some time first with iPeng and than i will give you some
ideas.

In that case, if one wants to keep local favorites then backup the
favorites.opml file before uninstalling. I don't know where it resides
on WHS, but it's usually in the prefs folder. Then restore after

[slim] Boom playing commercials on Pandora

2011-01-30 Thread arris

Recently, my Boom started playing commercials every now and then while
listening to Pandora. I only have a free Pandora account but so far I
was under the impression that Squeezeboxes have unlimited ad-free
streaming even with a free account. Did this somehow change recently?
Can I expect the ads to go away if I upgrade to Pandora One?

Re: [slim] Boom playing commercials on Pandora

2011-01-30 Thread aubuti

No, SB users do not get ad-free Pandora with a free account. Pandora
reportedly starting putting ads on their free streams quite some time
ago, around the time they introduced the 40 hours/month limit. I forget
when, but it was at least a year ago. If you upgrade to Pandora One you
won't get ads or monthly limits, but you will only get 128kbps to your
SB, as the 192kbps Pandora One streams only go to Pandora's web-based
players.

They must not have been enforcing that until very recently then. I've

would also start enforcing the 40hr/month limit on Squeezeboxes in the

Got the possibility of streaming to the iPad too (in app buy). This is

2011-01-30 Thread pippin

Which features are unique to iPeng?

It doesn't have a lot of really unique features in itself, OK, a few:
server rescan, manual WOL, Lyrics screen saver, playlist screen saver,
some additional search features, relative volume synchronization, show
all tracks of an artist,... OK maybe not so few after all.

What it does differently than SqueezePad is that there is a lot of
stuff that is hard-coded into iPeng to allow faster access than through
the deep menu structure of the SqueezePlay interface SqueezePad is
using.

One example is player management. In iPeng you can control all of your
players in one place (through a drop-down menu), change their
powerstate and volume and you can change synchronization settings. In
SqueezePlay you have to do this through settings menus.
Another example is Search: iPeng has a search entry field on the main
screen where you can enter a search text and get immediate results, in
SqueezePad you need to go through the menu to get to search.
This gives SqueezePad a somewhat cleaner interface (all the
functionality in iPeng has to go somewhere), granted.

Speed differences are mainly due to two aspects:
1. iPeng uses much bigger artwork, for stuff like a cover wall. This
puts additional load on the server to generate these images the first
time
2. iPeng shows more information in library menus (Albums, Tracks), the
more complex queries to get that information can indeed be slower. In
this case it's true that iPeng trades performance for functionality.

There are two ways how you can set WOL in iPeng:
 1. Automatic mode (the default) will send a WOL packet on startup,

 2. Manual mode gives you a power button to send the WOL manually;
probably not important in your case, this is more important for people
who also want to send their servers to sleep with iPeng, e.g. through

yes, it supports WOL.
But it is separate storage server, not the one that runs

So I need to specify mac address and IP.

That doesn't matter. There's a manual override for the MAC (iPeng
detects is automatically but you can also enter your own one).
You can even set two for both of your servers if you like, just add the
storage server manually in the settings. iPeng will think it is a
Squeezebox Server but that doesn't really matter if you don't care
about a few unsuccessful contact requests on port 9000 :)
You usually don't need to specify an IP address unless your server is
behind a router and if it is, you can specify that in iPeng, too :)

[slim] Video version of Squeezebox?

2011-01-30 Thread bleedpurplegold

Hello all,

I am new to the community as I just purchased a Squeezebox Touch and I
love it. So much so I am desperately looking for a video version of
what it does to stream to my hdtv.

Obviously Apple TV does this but I am not interested in that as I
understand that it cannot play mp4 files that were user created which
is a deal breaker for me.

Having something that can connect to the net and stream netflix seems
like a natural necessity at this point but for me I am more interested
in converting my entire SD-DVD collection to mp4 for lower bandwidth
and to rid myself of the space the DVDs currently take up.

Anyone else out there have something similarly setup to this? Any
advice is appreciated!

No, no errors. iPeng expects some servers to be unreachable but still
tries every 30s or so in case they come up. E.g. through WOL.

Another difference: iPeng shows more than one server (and connected
players) at a time which can be handy if you use e.g. MySB.

Re: [slim] SqueezePad or iPeng?

2011-01-30 Thread bluegaspode

For the records:
When Pippin talks of 'manual WOL' it just means you have to manually
press a button.
Automatic WOL (i.e. sending out a WOL to a configured target on a
regular basis) exists in SqueezePad as well.

As often said SqueezePad focusses on keeping stuff that you need
everyday easy and intuitive. Things that one only needs once a month or
less are left in their original menus.
And lets face it: both depend on the SqueezeBox server which limits
what both can do most. This just leaves some small areas like multiple
screensavers or how to render the synchronization state.

So its not just single users that write me stuff like this
after fiddling with ipeng and its interface for a long time, I tried
squeeze pad and was immediately hooked. Very clear, very fast, a joy to
use. Yes ipeng has more features, but to control your squeezes
 squeezepad is more than enough.
which underlines this is a good philosophy.

In the end it's up to the user but personally I would never trade
feature count against my joy to actually use the stuff ;)
