Re: [slim] iPeng update: Let your Squeezebox get Social

2011-07-19 Thread soundcheck

Just a comment from my side.

iPeng is still my reference SB control from a functionality
perspective.
I don't think it has to fear any competition, neither from Squeezepad
nor from Logitech. Those are just copying that IMO basic feature set,
which is all but user-friendly, especially if your collection
approaches a certain size.

If you'd ask me. I'd say. No I wouldn't need those social media
functions.
Probably I'm not in that addressed target group though.
Lot's of programming effort and money goes into those from my
perspective rather questionable features.

What I'd like to see:

I hope that we see one day a better consistant (dark) theme on the
iPeng interface.
I know, that this is ususally said to be a matter of taste. I wouldn't
agree at this point. GUI style mix is not considered the most
successful strategy for applications to make its users feel well. Yep
there's IMO quite some space for improvement. The mix up of
blue-white, black screen designs and those old style blue framed
pop-ups (taken from 1st generation iPeng I guess), i'd consider all but
consistant.
I assume you had a chance to look at SqueeezPad, it looks really good
and consistant - it just lacks iPeng functionalities. ;) I keep the
fingers crossed that you gonna do something about it.

Obviously a lot of time goes into programming of new iPeng features,
which do not relate to playback and database management anymore. That I
consider a pity.
Bottom line. I don't think those social media things will keep you in
the lead. The wikipedia thing is not bad. Still, fighting the
Googles/browsers etc. won't work out on the long run I guess.

I find myself using very often the browser to enter the html-based
setup dialog of the SB server.
Would be great if I could do all that from iPeng. That's what I also
consider very useful. I could change plugin parameter settings and
advanced
settings, asf from inside iPeng. No need to switch apps.

Off-topic wish:
I'd find it nice if the push2play function of iPeng as it is done on
the iPhone would also be made available on the iPad. By pushing the
album art from the collection-overview layer to start immediate
playback, should also work on the iPad - it could be introduced as a
new feature to be activated under settings. (Shouldn't be such a big
deal)

Anyhow. Keep up the good work. I recommended your App more than once
and keep doing it. ;)

Cheers

Yes, I've successfully used the web interface with my Kindle mainly for
searching in Spotify - it's easier to use the Kindle's keyboard than the

As other people have said, the Kindle is fantastic for what's it
designed for but it's not a general purpose device.

[slim] Problem: Cannot resolve IP address

2011-07-19 Thread Rhyan

Hi,

Having a few problems with my current setup and wondered if anyone had
any experience with this.

Basically, my setup comprises two SB3s accessing the Squeezebox server
running on a ReadyNAS duo. Until last Wednesday (the day we moved), the
SB3s were wirelessly connected to the ReadyNAS via a Netgear DGN2000
router (the NAS was wirelessly connected to the router via a Buffalo N
ethernet bridge). I had BT (ADSL) broadband. Each device took a fixed
IP address from the router. Everything worked a treat.

Since then, I have moved house and now have a Virgin Media Super Hub.
Each device seems to take the fixed IP addresses ok again. I can access
the NAS, and the SB3s can play music from the server.

However, I cannot access any internet functions (radio, favourites,
apps, iPlayer) from the SB3 as I did before. Instead, it sits there
trying to connect, and all I get is the error message given in the
title.

I suspect it's some kind of port problem on the router, but I don't
know how I can trace this or what I can do about it.

Anyone have any nuggets of adivce?

Cheers,
Rhyan

Probably I'm not in that addressed target group though.
Lot's of programming effort and money goes into those from my
 perspective rather questionable features.

Well, that kind of depends on the user, doesn't it?
I wanted it a lot for the reasons I stated and on facebook I can see
that it's indeed being used.

 What I'd like to see:

I hope that we see one day a better consistant (dark) theme on the
 iPeng interface.

Consistent with what?
Right now it's consistent with Apple's Apps and Apple's interface
guidelines.

Dark background may look cooler but it's really bad for the eyes if you
have small print.
That said: it's coming, I have to develop a dark interface now for the
upcoming iPeng redesign and will probably make that an option.

I know, that this is ususally said to be a matter of taste. I wouldn't
agree at this point. GUI style mix is not considered to be the most
successful strategy for applications to make its users feel well.
Yep - there's IMO quite some space for improvement. The mix-up of
blue-white black screen designs and those old style blue framed
pop-ups (taken from 1st generation iPeng I guess), i'd consider all but
 consistant.

With blue pop-ups I assume you mean the context menus?
That's actually not old but the newest addition to the interface. The
idea is to show the difference between a normal menu and a context menu
because they are functionally different.
It's an important distinction because in a context menu you can destroy
a playlist with a single tap, like in an album menu, which is why
these are distinct, too.

The dark cs. light scheme is the same one Apple uses:dark means
NowPlaying functionality, light means library. The only exception is
Settings-Player Settings if you use that.

I assume you had a chance to look at SqueeezPad, it looks really good
and consistant - it just lacks iPeng functionalities. ;) I keep the
fingers crossed that you gonna do something about it.

Well, SqueezePad allows itself the luxury of wasting 50% of the screen
for visual effects only, it's content area is just a little bit bigger
that iPeng for iPhone's. You can of course do that on iPad (and I
always said I'm not happy with iPeng for iPad's overall layout) but you
can't do it on iPhone.
It's easy to make a playlist look the same way as a stored playlist if
they are always in different places, you can't mix them up, on a small
device you need to create visual clues.
Also, regarding the functionality: One of the reasons SqueezePad has a
somewhat cleaner design than iPeng is that bluegaspode refuses to add
functionality at the price of simplicity.

Obviously a lot of time goes into programming of new iPeng features,
which do not relate to playback and media-/database management anymore.
 That I consider a pity.

Wikipedia was something like a 1h hack, really not a lot.
Facebook and Twitter for me are absolutely playback and media
management features because it's for me a way to be finally able to
play music I could not play on my Squeezebox at all so far - a growing
pain (see my comment above).

On library management the situation is simple: I can't do anything more
before Squeezebox Server 7.6 is out, the performance for a significant
part of iPeng's user base would simply suffer too much. Even now, the
things iPeng does in addition to standard Squeezeplay hurt performance
and I'm frequently getting complaints to that respect, it's simply not
an option.

Bottom line. I don't think those social media things will keep you in
the lead. The wikipedia idea is not bad. Still, fighting the
Googles/browsers and other spezialized apps etc. IMO won't work
 out on the long run.

That would be a pity because it would mean that the Squeezebox will die
out because that will be where the music will come from in the long
run.

Via a web-browser you get to artist homepages, Amazon reviews and asf.
 in a very flexible way.

Yes. But without iPeng you can't actually PLAY that music. It's still
an issue for me because two of the most frequently used services among
my friends (rd.io and SoundCloud) are not supported at all by the
Squeezebox.

I do and will keep doing my research-while-listening with my bowsers.

Maybe we are different, but I'm not prepared to try to find out for
half an hour how I can actually play that link somebody sends me, it
has to be faster and if faster means I have to use something else than
the Squeezebox this is going to be an issue for my Squeezebox.
I've caught myself playing music through AppleTV!

No need to defend anything. ;)

I guess I spreaded my message. I don't see any arguments from your side
which would change my mind.

Good to see that you're working on a GUI redesign.

On an iPad you don't want to see a boring blue-white PC like surface.
You want to see a cool shiny control panel. A mix of squeezepad and
ipeng plus a little more coolness or call it innovative control
functions.

P.S: The tap on album works on the iPhone extremely well for me.
I don't see any reason not having it as configurable option on the
iPad.
I'd really prefer a kind of consistent usability of both programs. (as
a matter of fact I got both in use)

Ah. OK. Wasn't aware that you were referring to iPad. My comments
mainly apply to iPhone. iPad will get a redesign, too, but I'm not yet
sure about the scheme, it's actually very, very difficult to do some of
the things iPeng for iPad now does with a dark background.

P.S: The tap on album works on the iPhone extremely well for me.

Well, as I said: we tried it and almost everybody got confused and the
decision to remove it was unambiguous. In the iPhone App it's
consistent right now, in the iPad one it was not.

I'd really prefer a kind of consistent usability of both programs. (as

But how do you differentiate the two then? I was close to doing a
simple mode for the iPhone version but as a matter of fact that would
have pretty much looked like the Logitech App so what's the sense in it?

surprisingly, the iPod app doesn't do gapless playback. I'll go beat
that drum over in the Spotify forums :-).

For those Berlin School EM fans out there, you'll be surprised to know

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback arrives on iPad: SqueezePad 1.7.0 released

2011-07-19 Thread gtcharlie

Just wanted to chime in with my appreciation for both the sale you are
currently conducting and the quality of your app. Just purchased
squeezepad yesterday and spent a good part of the day playing with it.
I should start by saying I have had ipeng on my iphone for quite some
time now and have used it exclusively to control my squeezebox. It too
is a very good app and I considered purchasing it for my ipad also but
when I saw your sale I could not resist. Glad I didn't. Both apps
have their strengths and I am happy to have one on each device. The
speed and simplicity of squeezepad is certainly very much appreciated.
Essentially involved zero learning curve for myself and the rest of the
family. Within 5 minutes of looking at the app my 10 year old son had
mastered it and was rocking the house with his favorite classic rock.

One question I have (and I asked of Pippen of ipeng fame also) is a
limitation that I think is on Rhapsody's part and not the app but I
will ask anyway. I have a great deal of playlists already composed in
my Rhapsody library. Is there anyway in squeezepad to take individual
songs off those playlists and add them to my queue? Currently I can
get the whole list to display but holding down on an individual song
does not present the option to do anything with it. I realize I can
load the whole playlist and then delete what I don't want to hear but
some of my playlists are quite long and removing 50 or 100 songs is
quite tedious.

Thanks for any help you can give me and once again job well done. I
hope a large number of people take advantage of your sale making a well
priced app a great priced one.

Thanks a lot for mentioning it. This is one of the main design goals of

[slim] Rhapsody no longer plays on Squeezebox Classic

2011-07-19 Thread hokie

Yesterday I tried playing songs from Rhapsody on my SB3. The display
denotes buffering of the song, then appears to stop (no progress shown
on the music advancing). I've tried playing Rhapsody through
Squeezebox Server and while the server shows the music time advancing
(and even goes on to the next song when finished), the SB3 simply shows
the song name and no time advance.

Rhapsody is working fine with my Boom, so I know my setup is fine.
I've also made sure I didn't have any synchronization between the Boom
or SB3 as well.

I'm running server version 7.5.5 and firmware version 134 on my SB3.

Any help in how to troubleshoot this problem is greatly appreciated!

Re: [slim] Problem: Cannot resolve IP address

2011-07-19 Thread garym

Rhyan;641580 Wrote:

 Cheers,
 Rhyan

sounds to me like SbS is not seeing your mysqueezebox.com credentials.
Look at the SbS Settings mysb.com tab. reenter your credentials and
hit apply...look carefully aftewards as the error message on that page
is not that obvious.

Also, I'd unplug SB players, computer running SbS, NAS, router. The
restart in reverse, letting each step fully start/boot before going to
the next step.

Sometimes, the can't resolve IP address problem is due to Squeezebox
Server starting before the network connection has come up. Restarting
SBS after the network is up fixes this issue.

Re: [slim] Jailbreak my squeezebox?

2011-07-19 Thread TiredLegs

You could run Squeezebox Server on a Network Attached Storage device or
similar bare bones computer that would only consume about 10 watts at
idle.

But if you have a Squeezebox Touch, why don't you just plug in a USB
drive and run the tiny server built into the Touch?

[slim] How to export all my music as a text file?

2011-07-19 Thread johan73

During a recent flooding of my basement my +1,000 LPs and CDs were
damaged by water :-(

I now need to file a claim with the insurance and need a list of all
titles.

I have ripped most of my music to FLAC so I can use it with Squeezebox.

Is there a clever way whereby I can export a text/excel file from
squeezebox listing all album titles?

Re: [slim] How to export all my music as a text file?

2011-07-19 Thread Gerry123

DOS prompt (assume you are using windows), navigate to the root of your
music collection (i.e. d:\music\albums)

type dir *. collection.txt /b /s

Creates a text file with the list of albums, again assuming you have
them in folders with the album name as the folder name. If not then use
one of the other suggestions.

Hope it helps, sorry to hear about the flood.

Re: [slim] Squeezeboxserver on Linux broken

2011-07-19 Thread Danny8

I have the same problem.

Currently, I'm trying out Funduntu Linux, which is based on Fedora 14.
(Not the latest Fedora, which is 15.) I downloaded three .rpm packages,
all with the same issue. In order:

- Latest 7.6 nightly build,
  -squeezeboxserver-7.6.0-0.1.32741.noarch.rpm-
- Latest 7.5 nightly build,
  -squeezeboxserver-7.5.5-0.1.32671.noarch.rpm-
- 'Recommended' download from mysqueezebox.com,
  *-squeezeboxserver-7.5.5-1.noarch.rpm-*

I figure the 'recommended' download is the safest and most stable
choice. I usually try the latest SBS version first, however. Just to
see where things stand.

-I'm curious why the 'recommended' download from the main user page
appears to be a newer version than the nightly 7.5 build.-

I did not look into this too closely (cannot start the server). I'd
appreciate a comment if anyone else noticed this.

I'll just find a .deb package for a previous version that works and
revert until the bugs can be fixed. Thanks.

I might do the same, if I find one on my hard drive. I don't usually
dig into the subversion repos just to get a working version. My next
move is to boot a different Linux installation and see if that SBS is
still working.

If you want a working SBS 7.5.5 rpm for Fedora 14, try the VortexBox

[slim] 7.6 and MusicIP: empty mixes?

2011-07-19 Thread bobkoure

Well, I decided I'd try 7.6 yet again.
Having learned from the last attempt, I uninstalled the previous
version, made sure all caches, conf files, etc. were removed, then
installed 7.6.

Scanning was... a bit balky. the first time the scanner found only
around half the files (25K of 70K). Scanning again find new found the
rest of the files.

The 'M' mixer icon shows next to tracks, but when I click an 'M' I get
an empty MusicIP list.
MusicIP was working just fine with 7.5 (and 7.4, etc on down.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Are you having a Touch with a USB drive but want to be able to use it

Yes, the objective is to use a USB (no external server) with the Touch.
Strangely the menus on the Touch give the option of being connected to
local -OR- being connected to Mysqueezebox.com but not both. If Touch
is connected to Mysqueezebox you can use the remote control function on
that site but because the touch is not connected local you can only play
internet radio, not the files on the USB. Pretty pointless really.

Anyways, I made the invalid assumption that this also applied to the
remote app(iphone). This assumption was reinforced by the fact that the
remote app was trying to force me to login to Mysqueezebox(why?) and
would not see the Touch on the LAN, although it eventually did (see
above).

All good now.
