Re: [slim] Pandora/Squeezebox. L arrow button

2011-08-01 Thread zen2go

Boom: neither the large button push, nor the right button on the remote,
move the display to Pandora track info (like/ dislike/ don't play for a
month/ album/ artist/ title/ etc.). It has worked for years, as stated
in the manual, until now - it really diminishes the usefulness of the
product (can't like/dislike, can't train Pandora channel).

Has there been any feedback from Squeezebox Support? I know that the
Boom has been replaced with an inferior model (only one set of speakers
- apparently monophonic - to reduce cost?), but there's no reason not to
support all of the Booms still in use.

[slim] 7.6 update - Scan stuck on pre-caching artwork

2011-08-01 Thread Club1820

So I updated to 7.6 and have run into problems as others have here. My
issue is the scan gets stuck on the Pre-caching Artwork and I have to
abort it. After spending several hours and trying the various
suggestions here having to do with the upgrade, I'm going back to 7.5.
But I thought I would post the end-portion of the scanner.log in hopes
someone has a fix.

Thanks in advance!

scanner log:

Re: [slim] 7.6 is totally broken

2011-08-01 Thread MusicMad

I have been reading several of these threads recently in the hope of
finding a solution ...

Set-up:
SB Touch + Duet, running SB server on Windows 7 (64-bit).
I upgraded to 7.6 last week and within 24/48 hrs both the Controller
and Touch required upgrades. In both cases the Downloads failed to
work until I had switched the devices off and then restarted them
(Controller: hold down on button for 8 seconds; Touch: unplug power
lead). I forget exactly when but at some stage in the upgrade process
I lost - say - 80-90% of the artwork.

All music files are WMA rips held on an external HDD (USB connection)
within 9 genre directories; artwork is from a range of sources, the
majority being found when the album is ripped. I often divide and
amalgamate albums and then will find artwork ffrom various web-sites
(e.g. Amazon). Everything is organised in Microsoft Windows Media
Player 12 / Windows Explorer.

I have cleared the cache (SB Server Control Panel / Advanced-Cleanup)

From SB Server / Information tab:
Version: 7.6.1 - r32935 @ Fri Jul 29 07:46:37 PDT2011
Library Statistics
Total Tracks: 31,056
Total Albums: 2,479
Total Artists: 408
Total Genres: 12
Total Playing Time: 1573:28:05
Music Scan Details
Discovering files (33929 of 33929) Complete 00:00:25
Scanning new files (31056 of 31056) Complete 01:22:37
Discovering Playlists (1 of 1) Complete 00:00:00
Pre-caching Artwork (2231 of 2231) Complete 00:04:13
The server has finished scanning your music collection.
Total time: 01:27:15 (Monday, August 1, 2011/9:03am)

This morning I unistanlled SB server and downloaded (again) v.
7.6.1-r32935. the scan took nearly 1.5hrs (as above) and I now have -
say - 70-80% (guess) of the artwork though the statistics appear to say
I should have 90% (= 2231 / 2,479).

Also, whislt I have corrected the genre name via WMA for some rips, one
of the Genres (DVD Rip) appears three times (DVD Rip, DVD rip and Dvd
Rip) and another Genre (Easy Listening) appears twice (Easy Listening
and Easy listening). I have indentified the incorrect names and
corrected them (last week) but despite re-scans, etc. these incorrect
Genre names won't go away!

Two issues (maybe this second issue is not related to v.7.6) - help?

Yes. Your player must connect to a server, either SBS on your computer
or TinySBS on your Touch or www.MySqueezeBox.com (MySB) online.

If you plan on frequent switches between servers (sounds like you will)
I'd suggest moving the switch to MySB to your home menu.
From the Touch go to Settings Home Menu Restore Hidden Menu Items
switch to MySB.

So to switch from SBS to MySB, simply select that menu item.
To switch from MySB to SBS, simply select My Music or Switch Library
(might also need to be un-hidden).

Good advice. Set up your touch following instructions. First it will
likely want to update the firmware, etc. Let it fully do this. At some
point it will ask you to either set up a mysb.com account or enter your
credentials. I'd go ahead and set this account up in advance. Then
simply plug your drive into the USB port. First time it will fully scan
your music. Depending on how many files you have it could take several
hours. Don't try to do anything else while it is scanning. Also note
that it is important that the drive either have only one partition or
your music is on the first partition.

If you have any problems post back. Good luck!

toby10 has some excellent advice here as well:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=645200postcount=3

and to emphasize, because of the time in rescanning your music library
when you remove and reattach your drive, you will likely be much better
off (if you have a large music library) if you connect the USB drive to
your ToUCH and then leave it connected (other than when you want to add
new music, etc.).

Re: [slim] Free AVG Anti Virus Software

2011-08-01 Thread Goodsounds

I spent many years of bouncing between free choices with varying luck
(AVG once bricked a PC after quarantining a key Win file). About six
months ago I bought Norton with multi-PC licenses and can't believe the
difference.

I'm very happy with the resulting performance and capabilities. Their
tech support is great and I've had far fewer problems of use that with
the others, and I tried most of them. I'm not sure what I thought I was
accomplishing by avoiding the ones with a license fee, the cost was very
modest. Even if the renewal is more, I'll gladly pay it.

I'd suggest you stick with your installed SBS 7.6, see if it works ok
for you. If not (scanner or art issues) maybe try the SBS 7.6.1
If you go with an earlier 7.5 build, and you do your switching to MySB
when computer is off, then MySB will want you to update to 7.6. When
you go back to SBS server then SBS will want you to downgrade to 7.5.
You will be in a firmware update loop. :)
Or, run 7.5 but then just don't switch to MySB.com.

Behringer's got an OK device (asio over usb, spdif or analog out) for
around $30.
I use one, with spdif out to a Yam amp (high end some years ago) with a
decent DAC, and can hear the difference between this and spdif direct
from my soundcard to that same amp (cleaner cymbals, mostly).
I'm using JVC pro monitors and an elderly velodyne sub. I wouldn't
bother with smaller speakers as it's not much of a difference.

I just released version 1.5.4 - it adds a auto-discover feature so that
you don't have to enter the ip of your squeezebox server manually. It
works fine with my tests - but maybe someone else can test it as well
and get back to me?

Sorry jswhale, still no fix for the favourites. I don't know why it
isn't working and I had no luck on the developers forum yet.

[slim] Why no new apps coming out?

2011-08-01 Thread New Daddy

Why doesn't Logitech make new apps for new services, like Rdio and

Is there a technical reason, or is it a business decision on the part

[slim] Which amp for a squeezebox?

2011-08-01 Thread mchassy

I am not new to wireless media centers. I used a roku for about 5 years.
But something broke down on it. Not sure if it is the just the power
cord or the doodad itself. I was not able to find a replacement for the
power cord, and I was in the process of moving and selling my various
other audio equipment.

So here I am with nothing but a hard drive full of MP3s and a
subscription to Spotify. I'm fairly sure that I will buy the squeezebox
touch, as it has an app for Spotify. The question is this: being in the
somewhat pleasant situation of being able to replace my full audio set
up, what amp and/or speakers should I get. The speakers are less of a
question, it is more the amp. I am looking for something small, but
relatively powerful. I am NOT an audiophile, but I don't mind laying
down a few hundred bucks/dollars/euros for a good amp. I can hear
differences in quality, but I'm not ready to lay down 1000 and more.
I've seen a few small amps, for example the Marantz CR502 DAB CD
Receiver HiFi System. This one is about the right price/quality range
that I'm looking for.
But here's the thing. I don't need a CD player. I don't need a radio.
This is why I'm getting the squeezebox. All I want is a good amp to
which looks nice and doesn't take up much space. I plan to connect the
squeezebox and a pair of speakers and that's it.
And I want an amp that is really made for music. I made the compromise
of getting a home cinema system with good enough speakers for music
last time. I don't regret that decision, but this time, I've gotten rid
of my TV. All I want the amp for is music.
I'm sure there must be others out there with the same setup, so any
suggestions are welcome.

Thanx for any opinions/suggestions

Mark

Re: [slim] 7.6 is totally broken

2011-08-01 Thread larsten

Im still running 7.5.5 on my QNAP 419P and it worked fine until weekend.
Now my server say that login to my account at Mysbx.com doesnt work.
When I login using my computer or my SQB Radios it works fine but not
when Squeezebox server tries to do it. Compatibility issue? My clients
(2 radio) has been forced to upgrade to 7.6.

I can listen to both my music and the webradio however I need to either
login to my Squeezebox server (QNAP)for my music lib and switch the
login to MySbx.com on my clients when I what to listen to radio. No
seemless integration in the Squeezebox server for both sources at the
moment... Hope it will be resolved quickly though a new firmware
release and change in MySBX login from previous versions of Sbx
servers.

[slim] Logfile in 7.6

2011-08-01 Thread mr_hyde

Hello,

I am not sure if this is the right part of the forum. But since I was
not able to find this somwhere else, I decided to go for the general
discussion.

I have installed 7.6 on a X86 based QNAP NAS. SbS is running through
SSOTS4 and I have not changed anything after installing 7.6. It seems
to be that SbS is logging every warning. This was not the case with all
earlier SbS versions. In SbS I have set all logging to on failure, but
this did not help. I have added nodebuglog and noinfolog to the startup
of SbS, but this resultd also in no change of the behavior.

Does somebody else observe the same behavior, or is this only on the
SSOTS based system?

Is there some other switch to turn the logging off?

Other than that, I was not able to find serious issues with 7.6.

Thanks
Mr_Hyde

I'd happily trade future new apps for stable code. Hopefully Logitech
are focused on making the stuff they've got work instead of adding even
more function (that doesn't work). Been with Slim etc. since the start
and having gone thru a period of no CD's being played, they are
starting to creep back in as reliability of Squeeze gets worse..

As Stratmangler says - check the PSU. You are probably thinking that
the PSU is ok because it is powering up but if the PSU is suspect then
you'll get unpredictable behaviour from the player. I've had 4 that

were ok when I changed the PSU. It's worth a go.

there are a lot of issues and they may not be platform specific.

Since I develop systems for a living, I always try to change only one

Well, good luck with that.

I've already spent enough hours on this trying the various fixes posted

artwork continued to hang. I went back to 7.5.

Hopefully with my post of the scanner log and yours also, someone can
chime in with a fix. Otherwise I will just wait for the next update.
Not even the nightly build of 7.6.1 fixed the issue for me.

[slim] 3rd party services

2011-08-01 Thread castalla

3rd party services are a great feature of the squeezebox range.
Logitech make a big feature of these on mysqueezebox.com.

IMHO some are more equal than others - and rightly so. For example, in
the internet radio arena, then surely the BBC must be rated as a
world-class broadcaster with a range of services (live, listen again,
podcasts) which far exceeds the offerings of most other radio
providers.

In contrast, the recent addition of Orange Liveradio is curious. Yet,
there has been no effort to repair the failure of Touch devices to
handle the BBC opml aggregated podcast listings.

As a Beebophile I lament this omission.

Actually, the current Fedora release is 15, but I've never seen much
point in having the most current version of Linux for a server that
only supports Squeezeboxserver. It was a year and half or so ago that I
went from FC8 to FC12, so probably won't mess with another linux upgrade
on that machine for another year or even more.

Re: [slim] Which amp for a squeezebox?

2011-08-01 Thread Ron Olsen

Check out the Parasound Zamp v.3:
http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=PAZAMPV3
Designed for custom installations, it may not have the look you want,
however.

I have a Parasound Halo A23 amp and think it's great, but at $995, it
is out of your price range.
http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=PAHA23
Beautiful amp with excellent performance.

Whatever amp you get, make sure it has enough power to drive your
speakers.

Note: AudioAdvisor only ships Parasound to the USA.

I have the parasound A21 and the zamp v.3. I very much like both of
them (for different purposes of course...)

Why doesn't Logitech make new apps for new services, like Rdio and
Amazon Cloud player? Sono has Rdio app, so it can and should be done.
Is there a technical reason, or is it a business decision on the part
 of Logitech?

It's only a business decision but they do release new apps now and
then, for example the Orange Liveradio app was released last week
together with the 7.6 release.
