Re: [slim] Announce: Whitebear Media Server v2.2 Released

2012-05-16 Thread batka

Hi Andrew!

I wonder whether is it possible to use Whitebear with a remote
Squeezebox Server?

I mean this:
My Squeezebox Server runs on a Linux box (OpenSUSE 12.1).
Then from the Windows PC, I would control the Squeezebox through UPNP,
using Whitebear.
It is working if the Whitebear runs on same server as the Squeezebox
Server.

Currently, if I understand correctly, Whitebear controls Squeezebox
Server only if it is running on same server. In Whitebear settings, the
Squeezbox Server HTTP and CLI port can be specified.
However it would be a great feature if the IP also could be specified,
so that Whitebear would connect to remote Squeezebox Server.

What do you think?
Thanks
Gyrgy

Hmm, it's not an intentional behavior. In my tests I see the standard
android fast scroll widget that scrolls through the normal alphabet.
Seeing '#' only would indicate some bug in detection of the sorted
values.

I'll assume you're running the latest server and Orange Squeeze
versions... do you have any plugins that would be changing your artist
list? If you can go to advanced preferences in Orange Squeeze, enable
verbose logging, and then load your artist list. Send me the logs -- it
should shed some light on what's going on.

I've seen a similar effect but I think it was on lists generated by
Custom Browse rather that the built in ones.

Hope that helps,

Thanks Craig, that's good information.

If anyone replicates this, please enable verbose logging and send the
resulting logs to me so I can see what sort of scenario this occurs in.
The CustomBrowse artist list scrolling works OK for me in my limited
testing -- but I don't use it regularly so it could be a transient
failure or something unique to the device or combination of
plugin/server versions. I'd definitely like to resolve the issue.

[slim] Duet Receiver streaming rates

2012-05-16 Thread TheLastMan

*Technical question:* does the Squeezebox Receiver have some set
streaming rates? I ask this because I have been trying to optimise the
position of my Receiver relative to my wireless router and using the
Network signal graph utility on the Controller. It seems to me that the
Duet will stream at one of a few pre-fixed rates depending on how strong
the signal is. In other words with a given signal strength/quality the
streaming gives a flat topped graph. Improve the signal and it doesn't
gradually rise but takes a step up to the next level.

From my experiments I have found set levels at roughly 200 Kb/s, 400
Kb/s 800 Kb/s and 1500 Kb/s. I don't have the exact numbers, these are
just estimates from the very small graph. In each case the graph has a
flat top but if you improve the signal it will step up one level. If
you have a marginal signal it tends to start high, then steps down and
up a bit before finally settling at a particular rate.

My problem was I had to move the Receiver from a position with a good
signal to one with a poor signal. I used to get a constant 1500 Kb/s in
the old location which was great for streaming FLAC files. When I
checked it at the new location it would only give about 800 Kb/s.

Luckily that still seems to be enough to reliably stream FLAC encoded at
compression level 5 which is what I used for most of my rips.

I used to think that you needed 1,400 kbps to stream FLAC but thinking
about it the formula is 44100 (Hz) x 16 (bits) x 2 (channels) =
1,411,200 bits per second. This is compressed roughly 60% in a FLAC
file giving a streaming rate of 846,720 bps or 826 Kbps.

Presumably the set streaming rate I am seeing is designed to be enough
to cope with FLAC. Similarly the bit rate of 400 kbps is probably
designed to cover 320kbps MP3 files and the 200 kbps rate covers 196 or
128 kbps MP3s.

Is that others experience?

[slim] Internet radio stations buffering constantly since upgrade to LMS 7 (from SS 5.x)

2012-05-16 Thread dwc

I was happy with my stable setup so I stopped upgrading the server for a
long time. I believe I was on a 5.x version of slimserver up until last
month.

Came home from a work trip to find the mobo fried on my home server, so
I grabbed a new box and started afresh. This time I grabbed the most
recent stable 7.7.2.

Now during my wife's morning coffee, the KALW broadcast constantly
rebuffers (on the Boom in the kitchen) . This never happened (unless
there was a real network issue) with the old slim server version. Is
there some kind of setting I can check into to somehow lessen the
buffering? Any advice? I am confident that the only changes have been
the server upgrade and the associated firmware upgrades on the players.

Side question: do internet radio stations flow through the LMS server,
or once connected does the Boom receive the signal direct from source?

Thanks!

Unless you turned on proxied streaming or sync players it goes directly
from source . So it is not likely the server .

To exclude the server connect directly to mysqueezebox.com and listen .

If a station only stutters a certain times during a day it is very
likely the station .

You can try to proxy via the server could actually make things better
and there is a buffer time you can set in LMS I have it to 30 seconds
default is 3 .

If you suspects the wifi throughput to the boom try to play a local FLAC
file they are around 800kbps and should work fine

Re: [slim] Need help with Net UDAP to configure a squeezebox duet

2012-05-16 Thread TheLastMan

A common problem for many people using net-UDAP is that the PC (or
laptop) you are using to configure the Receiver has to be in the same
subnet as the Receiver itself. If the PC/laptop is already connected to
a network and the internet then it will not work.

There is some kind of procedure that goes on when you reset the Receiver
that uses an unusual IP for the Receiver and PC. Not sure how it works,
but I always do the following:

1. Disconnect the PC from any network, wired or wireless
2. On the PC, in the properties of the network adapter, remove any fixed
IP address from the TCP/IP (V4) making sure it is obtaining its IP by
DHCP (automatic)
3. Reboot the laptop or PC just to make sure the changes have stuck
4. With the Receiver switched off connect one end of a short Ethernet
cable to the Receiver and the other to the network socket of the PC
5. Power on the Receiver and press and hold the front button until it
flashes rapidly red
6. Wait until it turns to a slow flashing red light then launch the
net-UDAP application.
7. Run the discover routine

Provided the Discover routine works you can proceed with making your
commands.

Because it won't be possible to consult any web site while you are doing
this (unless you are running a second PC for the purpose) it is a good
idea to print all instructions out beforehand and have a good idea of
the commands you will be uploading before you go through this
procedure.

Good luck!

Re: [slim] Need help with Net UDAP to configure a squeezebox duet

2012-05-16 Thread lillu

I solved my problem by doing the following.

use the NET UDAP version 1.0 and not 1.1
launch the command line with an extra argument --local-address=my
laptop IP.

from this point on, everything went fine using the examples of
configurations provided.

thanks for your support.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Orange Squeeze 1.0 for Android Released

2012-05-16 Thread Craig

I'm not sure if this is the same thing, If I scroll down my standard
artist list then it does start with # (my first artist is 10,000
Maniacs) but does move correctly on to initial letters.
If I scroll down a Custom Browse list then I just get appear to be the
list position number.

I can still send a log if it is of any use to you.
