Re: [slim] Better hurry, Squeezeboxes getting more expensive

2012-12-27 Thread hvb83

Prices have gone through the roof during last month, at least here in
The Netherlands. I had already gathered the items I needed (that is 2
Touches, 2 radio's and 3 receivers), but then my parents and my sister
decided they wanted this great music system too. During the three years
I've had the system they never expressed any interest in that regard,
and now it's gone, they all of a sudden want a system for their own...
:S

For my parents I was lucky enough to find a supplier that still had a
Touch around for €229 and a Radio for a very decent price too, only 4
weeks ago. Now all shops have run out of them in the mean time, and used
Touches are selling for €350+ within days! It's crazy. And for my sister
I was lucky enough to source a used Touch with the foil still on for
€219 just now.

It's nice to see people still believe in this system, but double the
price in just a couple of weeks time sounds like a bubble to me. If
we're lucky this will last a couple of years probably. But it mainly
depends upon what Logitech does with their new devices. If they release
a new device for their UE-line, a device that is equal of better than
the Touch (at least for the masses...), then the current prices will
drop rapidly. I saw one sign of Logitech taking the UE-line marketing
more serious now: they where sponsoring a radio-show last week. In my
opinion they wouldn't do that if they were only planning on the Radio
alone...

Re: [slim] ANN: Orange Squeeze 1.3.0 released!

2012-12-27 Thread theslime

I agree. It's great, perfect even, in portrait mode on a Nexus 7, but
landscape mode or any view on a 10 inch tablet leaves a tiny bit to be
desired. Still, the layouts are miles better than the official app and
Squeeze Commander combined, so I'm definitely not complaining. E.g. the
now playing screen is nice even in landscape, and that's not the case at
all with the other two. Also, I primarily use my Nexus 7 in portrait
view anyway.

Re: [slim] Better hurry, Squeezeboxes getting more expensive

2012-12-27 Thread Recoveryone

If you look at what the Squeezebox brand really is you would not be so
surprised. Squeezebox has had more of a cult following than a
commerical success on store shelves. As our world has gotten smaller,
due to social media over the years the word has reached people that have
been looking for what we have been enjoying for years. Now that
logitech has decided to discontinue the line, the value of those units
that are left gain in value. Many on here (including myself) have
purchased extra units for the just incase scenario in fear we will not
be able to find another one later. Prices will always float towards the
highend during hoildays just for the reason above. Squeezebox set the
standard at all economic levels and listener perference that all others
had to play catch up. Now you have AVR's that support DLNA along with
popular handheld devices that can connect directly to a home stereo. We
live in world that is more concern with easy access than quality of the
product or output, but for those of us that still understand and believe
in those standards compare all other products against the Squeezebox to
see if it mearsures up. The Squeezebox line is not perfect, but until
someone comes up with a product that has it and built to last the
Squeezebox Slimp, SB Classic, Duet, Touch and Transporter will always
have a place in many homes just like a V8 big block.

This would get us into a neverending story and to be honest: we create a
lot of work on our side to support 1% of the userbase that even know
that something like URLs on iOS exist.

Count me in if we build a common URL that just starts the App.
 But not more.
I made this post elswhere but I would like to see Squeezepad have the
ability to be called from another app (which it already can) but then
pass a paremeter in the URL schema to select the server/player to
connect to. For those of us deploying Vortexboxes config'd with 3 or
more SoftSqueeze servers we need the ability to launch the Squeezepad
app but have it open and connect the appropriate server automatically.
What a client does from that point is their business but if I could get
them on the correct Softsqueeze server that matches the source that the
zone they're controlling is connected to I'd be happy, well I'm already
happpy so I'd be happier. Either by MAC, literal string or even player
index.

I could live without the hardware, but LMS is what I'll miss most,

XBMC with the new AudioEngine can output 24/96, which is what I want.
This made me look. XBMC has also shown impressive community development
power. And it'll do both music and movies. Now, I expect multiroom will
come. How could it not? There are already threads on the XBMC forums for
that. As for the services, that may be more tricky, although it seems
(after just a brief search) there are at least Spotify plug ins.

I've been playing with this for a bit - Antipodes Audio high end vortex
box-based server. This has 2tb onboard and can rip to FLAC using its
built in blu-ray drive. It sounds excellent and although not
inexpensive, I'm considering it as a Touch replacement. It'll also get
me away from the usual iTunes BS.

Maybe maybe this one can fill the gap...

Of course time will tell whether the device can live up to the promising
specs known so far... looks like they are aiming for a linux based
device and active support from a community. So far I have known Olive as
more of an aristocratic company with more tech based solutions (rather
than aestetics and flexibility), so it may be a bit of a gamble.

Bizare product , 10x the usual price for a vortexbox server ?? And only
USB output , for that price spdiff toslink and a high quality DAC should
be included ? Aha now I see they sell an USB DAC too ,but why no spdiff
out ?
And they still don't get it who, wants the server in the hifi rack ? No
player only devices ?

No I'll pass , to silly for me an overpriced vb server :) you can get
an even more overpriced version with linear PSU for the computer ?
It can be used as squeezebox server ,but then again overpriced because
the server does not influence soundqality in a squeezebox system so a
waste of $ for that purpose

I'm more for a centralised server and distributed players solution
