In fact, I was thinking that is I can get a multiple instance of
SqueezeLite, all feeding different streams connected to Sonos
controller, it might be an interesting solution. In other words

 SqueezeLite:1 == Stream:1 == Sonos device:1
 SqueezeLite:2 == Stream:2 == Sonos device:2
 .. . . .
 SqueezeLite:N == Stream:N == Sonos device:N

So, from LMS, each Sonos device would be a separated SqueezeLite entity,
so it would be independently controllable as far as volume and what is
played on to it. From Sonos controller, what is needed is to play a
different stream on each device. Synchronization is not likely to work,
but it can be achieved by connecting multiple Sonos devices to a single
 stream
Sorry, am I missing something here?

It seems to me what's being proposed is a way of using Sonos devices as
Squeezeboxes, and getting them properly integrated into LMS.

Why would anyone do that? Why would they use expensive Sonos devices to
emulate what can be built for a fraction of the cost using things like
RaspPi/Odroid/Wandboard/etc?

That's what I'm doing now for test. I started with FFmpeg to directly do
RTP but unfortunately Sonos does not support RTP. So I will either use
FFServer or VLC. But, for going beyond just the test that would proove
feasibility, I was more concerned about the CPU required by multiple

Exactly - this is about transition. SOmetimes, you'll go native Sonos,
but not at the begining. I agree that if the objective is to keep LMS
for ever and for a guy that like tinkering, this is not an issue - but
most users don't want to do that

If mp3 is acceptable, the simplest way would be to point the sonos

Not stable as in officially declared stable. But while you're correct,
there are quite some changes every now and then, overall I'd consider it
pretty stable. I can't remember the last crash. A hiccup now and then,
which I'm usually trying to fix asap.

I actually haven't had time to try it

Faster scanning (very much with larger collections and enough memory),
faster web UI browsing, faster Browse Music Folder, some new features
like Browse by Album Artist, Browse Random Albums, return of Browse

[slim] Web based streaming squeezebox client?

Currently I've been streaming music from my LMS server at my house using
the following:

Windows 7:
Squeezeplay
Squeezelite

Android:
Squeeze Player
Orange Squeeze

Is there a web client or something that doesn't require installation?
For example, my girlfriend asked if she can stream from her computer at
work but she doesn't have admin rights to install anything. Is there a
java based or html5 based player over a webbrowser to stream to for
this?

Thanks!

It's not that with LMS, DIY is the only option left. You can employ
Android (or iOS) based devices. Getting the client running is as easy as
installing an app. It doesn't get much more user-friendly than that IMO.

MichaelWell, I want her to be able to play music and that's it. haha. So I was
just looking for a player. Squeezeplay is a nice interface without
getting involved with the server settings. It's more so a player so it's
easier for people who have no idea what they are looking at. Otherwise,
I'm thinking she might think settings at the bottom is actually settings
for her player or something.. I dunno, I don't care if she has the login
to the server, I just would rather her only see a player, and not get
confused by the actual server settings and stuff.

Re: [slim] Call for testers! Daphile

2014-09-17 Thread Zomby Woof

I use DaPhile on a network connected Atom based pc. It works perfectly
playing locally but sometimes there are problems streaming to
Squeezelite running on my desktop. I have upgraded Squeezelite to 1.6.4
but still have the same problem.
After booting my desktop and starting Squeezelite with:
./squeezelite-x86-64 -n WildDog -z I open DaPhile page and mark a few
tunes for play. Nearly every time, after 6 to 8 minutes, The audio stops
and I get a puttering noise from my speakers. The only fix is to kill
that instance of Squeezelite and start a new one.
This problem disappeared with oone of the earlier versions of DaPhile
but has been back for a while now. I am not sure though if the problem
is with Squeezelite or Daphile.
Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips to help find the cause?

Daphile Server: Atom MoBo with 4G Ram, 1TB WD HDD, wired network.
Desktop: I7 870 on a Gigabyte MoBo with 8G Ram, multiple HDD, onboard
sound card, Linux Mint 64bit.

Re: [slim] Logitech invests in the smart home with Harmony remote and hub

2014-09-17 Thread GeeJay

I recently bought the Harmony Hub, including the remote. It's designed
primarily as a smartphone app, which is reasonably well designed, but I
wanted a remote with buttons to replace my Harmony One. I like having a
remote that doesn't have a screen that can break (as occurred with both
my Harmony Ones), but the one aggravating negative to the remote that
comes with the Hub is there is no backlighting of the keys. It's almost
an afterthought, as if everyone is just clamoring to use their iPhones
as remotes.

I might be tempted to step up to the new remote if they remedied that
problem, but otherwise I don't see much of a need for a 'home
automation' remote. Although, if I ever upgrade my thermostats to wifi

Re: [slim] Question about signal strength

2014-09-17 Thread Apesbrain

I have a Touch in the other room currently showing 80% that occasionally
drops out. There are many factors at work here including how many other
wireless devices are in your household, how many wireless networks are
in your local area, and how many are on the same channel as yours.
First try changing your wireless channel to 1, 6 or 11.

Here are a few other things you can try:

1. Put a 'reflector'
(http://urbanwireless.info/antennas/parabolic-reflector) on your
wireless router antenna(s)
2. Get some 'high-gain antennas'
for your wireless router
3. Move your wireless router to a position closer to your Boom or one
that is higher in elevation
4. Get a new, 'more powerful wireless router'
5. Install a 'wireless extender/repeater'
mid-way between your router and the Boom
6. Use 'Powerline devices'
to run a wired connection to your Boom via your electrical grid.

They are listed somewhat in order of impact. In my experience if a
wireless Squeezebox is operating ok (but unknowingly is close to the
signal strength limit) setting it to sync with another unit will push it
under the limit.

One other thing you can try is to enable bitrate limiting on your Boom
(Settings Player (Boom) Audio). MP3 at 192kbps requires just 15% of
the bandwidth needed by FLAC.

Great ! I did not remember that LMS feature. Tried quickly and Sonos
recognizes the stream and LMS recognizes the Sonos client - I'll see how
sync works (i'not home currently so a bit difficult to listen to the
result) but if it works, then it might be more than good enough - Thanks
 !

Bummer ... Sonos recognizes the stream and LMS shows it as a device.
That's cool but that device cannot be synchronized. So that's a good
start, but the missing sync is making that a less interesting feature
than my hardware bridge
