[slim] HDMI input
Hi - I have Picoreplayer installed on several Raspberry Pi 3s scattered around, with one serving as an LMS server. Two of them have Hifiberry Amp2 cards with speakers connected, and one goes directly into a stereo amplifier. It all works great. My question is whether it is possible to use the HDMI port on the Raspberry Pi as an audio input source, and route the audio out through the hifiberry amp? The use case is this. The raspberry pi unit that serves as the LMS server sits next to a TV. I would like to take the HDMI output from the TV, parse out the video signal (this I know how to do), and run the remaining audio into the raspberry pi and have it play through the amp through the speakers. Thanks for the help! I actually found that with Nirvana's Nevermind album, which in its vinyl release of the past few years, is a victim of the loudness war. That was a point I wanted to make. Vinyl is not immune. I do think that if everything is relatively equal, especially the sources, then the argument for vinyl is really subjective. emalvick's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109154 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

You are 100% correct about Loudness although Vinyl isnt totally immune from it, it is as you say much less likely to occur. Re: [slim] CDs rapid Demise
The loudness war I think is a huge reason vinyl is popular with audiofiles (doesn't necessarily explain the hipster love of vinyl). I've noticed plenty of examples where the vinyl sounds better than the CD and it isn't because vinyl is better, it's just the mastering. About the time digital download sales began, mastering started to gear itself towards compression. I think it was easier to just master the CD and mp3 all at once and then compress the dynamics to tailor towards listeners who predominantly listen to music in a car, crappy headphones, ipods, etc. That is how music is listened to 99% of the time now. Vinyl, however, has been immune to this type of mastering, probably because it can't really stand up to it, and the industry is trying to bank on the idea that vinyl is better. I really started noticing the decline in CD mastering quality around 2004 / 2005 (I'm sure it began sooner). I remembering ripping a few CD's that just sounded terrible once ripped. Using audacity and then a few other tools showed me that the music was clipped across the board. A few years later, I found a vinyl copy of one of the albums, and when it was ripped, I noted there was no clipping, and consequently sounded better. Was it because it was vinyl? only indirectly. If the CD had been mastered the same as the vinyl, I'm fairly certain it would have sounded the same to my ears. I am not an audiophile in the sense some people can be, I do prefer the clean sound of a well-mastered CD or other format rather than the random pops that go with vinyl. My home system and speakers are quite modest; I can't hear the difference between a 24-192, 24-96, or 16-44 audio. I can rarely hear the difference between a 320 bit mp3 vs a FLAC (from the same source). But, I really hate over-compressed and loud CD's and digital files. So, with regard to CDs and their demise; I tend to buy used CDs, like others expressed, mostly because if an album is old enough, the 1990's generally had better mastering than the 2000's when it comes to popular music. I do buy new music but I am much more selective than I used to be. I rely on Spotify to try before I buy, and then I get selective on the format I do buy. I tend to buy more FLAC (bandcamp and 7digital) but stick with 16/44 format or occasionally 24/48 as I don't find a need for higher resolution. But, when FLAC is significantly more expensive or impossible to come by, I might buy CD or Vinyl. I am not a huge fan of the warming aspects of vinyl, so I generally try to avoid it unless I (a) really love the album (b) it's the only good mastering of the album and (c) want the album art. With this method, I find myself buying less music but buying more music that I will listen to and that will sound good. I am, however, a contributer to the CD's demise, although the record industry has contributed too. I do think it is cheaper to sell, stream, distribute digitally than physically, otherwise physical formats wouldn't be in a demise. Digital is probably more profitable and the prices are really just based on what the market will bear. emalvick's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=35382 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109154 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Need Opinions For Minimalist System Hookup
oops, sorry, I just thought of one more question If I bought a normal chromecast (video) over the audio chromecast (with other than HDMI outputs), would that allow me to have the most flexibility in that I could use it via the TV HDMI (with now playing), but also, it would work with the soundbar HDMI? That is, the video Chromecast does not need a display to work? The CC is actually an ideal solution for me because the HDMI port on the soundbar is not used (TV to soundbar via optical), and I have a vacant HDMI on the TV. Also, the optical in on the SB isn't available. So, it the normal second gen CC for $USD35 would work either way, viola! Now the only other thing to worry (over think) about is if the HDMI from the TV does a pass through of the audio data to the optical out without monkeying with it. I imagine it does \ Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109218 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Chromecast with plugin works exactly like a native Squeeze device and as you say they are very cheap. Your Controller will see it as another SB device. If you go HDMI -> TV you will get a now playing display on TV If you go HDMI -> Soundbar then no display and no switcher unless you can make Harmony control the Soundbar inputs. There is a third party Squeezeplay app for Roku but its out of date / rubbish so I wouldn't even consider it. I'm not familiar with the plug in, I'll look into it. So you are proposing: Chromecast into the TV (HDMI), TV as the switcher, to the soundbar (optical), and cast from the LMS/PC? This would all be harmony switchable, but not being familiar with the plus in, what would be the SB UI? Also, does the audio quality/digital integrity remain intact?" and I could also do (to keep the TV off while playing audio) - Chromecast into the SB (???) Thanks for the thought! [slim] Need Opinions For Minimalist System Hookup
Hi; Over the years I have acquired allot of equipment including multiple squeezebox devices, and have several systems assembled at home - living room, upstairs, garage, shop, etc... A few years ago I bought a cabin that was in need of some love and companionship. Sort of like a puppy...I digress. I didn't want to drag all sorts of equipment up there, and also wanted a bit of a minimalist living, although ISP availability made me happy. So I setup this system: 40" basic Samsung Flat Screen (minimal I/O) - antenna only for broadcast at this time Roku Stick DVD player (remembr those?) and all my old dvd's from home Squeezebox Boom Squeezebox Controller added later I added the controller later for remote control of the boom, and a "now playing" screen, and for simplicity for others to operate. I am really happy with the Boom as my kit, its really a wonderful basic "listen to music". People ask "where are the speakers?". But, here's where I need some thoughts and advice: I decided to add a soundbar that is on its way (Yamaha YAS 107) mostly to improve the TV/Streaming experience. Its small = still minimalist ;) So, I got to thinking about music streaming playback through the soundbar, and how to implement? Here's what I am going to do right now, the TV as the video/audio switcher: Roku Stick -> HDMI in on TV Antenna -> RF in on TV DVD -> Component in on TV TV-> Sound Bar via Optical Out of TV, In on soundbar. I should note that the TV does not support ARC. I should also note that I will be using a harmony 650 to control all but the roku that uses RF, and the SB. It will help people other than me operate the setup. So, what about the music? I could: 1) connect the headphone analog out of the boom to the analog in of the soundbar. 2) I have a squeezebox receiver laying around that I can add and go analog out to the sound bar. This would work with the harmony. 3) I could use that SB receiver and go optical to the soundbar, but there is only one optical input on the bar. I could use a toslink switch, but it would be preferred if the harmony could control the switching (maybe someone knows?) 4) I could (you folks fill here here, perhaps I am overlooking an "ah ha!" One thing I should note, unless the soundbar is far and above superior, I still plan on using the boom speakers, so if I have to change a setting back and forth or plug/unplug to mute the boom speakers for #1, that wouldn't work. I am thinking that #2 or #3 are the favored thoughts right now. The Boom could then operate independently. Thoughts?
