Re: [slim] Automatic switching between two SCs on the same network (SB3)?

2009-09-28 Thread . brum

Thanks for all interesting and valuable feedback!

The remote libraries concept sounds cool also from other perspectives,
if that would finally enable us to connect to friends' libraries.
Obviously most would need to resample, but for presenting new and
exciting stuff to friends that would be nice.

[slim] Automatic switching between two SCs on the same network (SB3)?

2009-09-27 Thread . brum

Hello,

I run my standard SqueezeCenter on a ReadyNAS DUO since a year,
primarily because not having to keep any PCs powered on in the house.
It's been working well enough, the slight speed issues with populating
the SB3 interface with long lists (e.g. 'Artist') have been compensated
by the overall ease of setup.

I have just upgraded the main home PC, however, and came to think about
that there might be interesting possibilities for the quad processor
power. I'd therefore like to set up a parallel SC on the PC that would
be used whenever the PC happens to be on. Obviously both SCs need to be
the same version, otherwise the SB3 may upgrade/downgrade its firmware
when switching between the SCs.

Given this, I'm wondering if there's any way to automate the SB3's
switching between the servers? Ideally I'd like the SB3 to use the PC's
SC whenever it's available on the network, but fall back to the ReadyNAS
DUO's when it's not.

Will that be manual switching each time, or could the SB3 be set up to
handle the switch?

TIA,

.brum

[slim] How to get back to Artist instead of Music Library on SB3 user interface

2009-09-27 Thread . brum

Hi,

I often listen to several albums in a row by one artist. Currently my
SC and SB3 takes me to the root menu of Music Library when I
navigate out (left arrow on the remote) from the current album after a
while (if done quite soon after going into the album I do get back to
Artist, but not after a while). Given that the Artist list takes
quite some time to populate, this gets tedious.

Is there any way to change this (apparent) default behaviour, so that
left arrow would always navigate one step back/up from where one
currently is?

TIA,

Re: [slim] Automatic switching between two SCs on the same network (SB3)?

2009-09-27 Thread . brum

Thanks for the input!

I guess I'll just go ahead and install SC on the main PC and:

1) see if switching manually feels cumbersome in practice, and
2) see if I can setup the CLI script to control the SC from the main PC
upon powering up and down

On the other hand, here between posting the first message and now I
read up on the upcoming version 7.4. It introduces some more automated
switching between an SC and SqueezeNetwork but only for the radio style
products. That could perhaps be tweaked also, we'll see.

Regards,

[slim] SqueezePlay URL accepts only IP, not name?

2009-01-08 Thread .brum

Hi,

I tried to get the new SqueezePlay to work from my office the other
day, wanting to listen remotely with it. In the settings I couldn't,
however, find a way to enter a URL by a domain name, instead of IP
numbers.

I'd guess most of us have an ISP that provide only dynamic IPs, and
people use DNS service providers to get a static domain name to the
ever changing IP. Therefore it would be useful to be able to enter a
name based address. Or learn how to do it, if that is already possible
:).

[slim] SB3 suddenly doesn't start playing song

2008-11-12 Thread .brum

Hi,

I ran into a curious situation, where SB3 suddenly started getting
stuck when starting playing a song. It shows that it starts, showing
the song progress bar after a long-ish while, but then nothing happens.
It doesn't seem to matter whether it's a flac or mp3, or even Internet
radio stream. Otherwise the player is very responsive, it doesn't
freeze.

I have booted the server and verified that I can play the same songs
with Foobar2000 from the server (over slower network connection), there
seems to be no general problem with the server.

This started after I tried to play a song that was supposed to be a 5.1
DTS file. Could this have gotten something stuck in the player somehow?

Is there a way to reset the player, or what else could I try to do to
fix this?

TIA,

[slim] Squeezecenter / Firefox issue

2008-11-01 Thread Brum

Hello all,

After some issues with IE7, I decided to give the acclaimed Firefox a
try. I downloaded and installed v3.0.3, but now the web interface to
Squeezecenter fails to load, neither in default or Classic mode. I only
get a pop-up window asking me what to do with the
application/octet-stream - either to save to disk or what program to
use to open. Connecting to Squeezecenter using IE7 from the same PC
still works.

Has anyone else run into this problem?
Is there a setting somewhere in Firefox needed to tell the browser how
to deal with the octet-stream?

I am running Squeezecenter 7.3-23734 on a Qnap TS-209-PRO. Never had
any problems earlier...

Re: [slim] new duet with amp/active speaker

This is from a Norwegian webshop...

It says not in stock on the page, but the price in NOK seems to be

Can't seem to find it in any other norwegian shops yet, but it has to
be just around the corner.

Doesn't seem to be able to run on batteries, though, but rumours says
it is wall-wart-powered... So a suitable NiCd-pack should be able to
provide juice for a few hours, anyway... B-)

Re: [slim] Controller software update

2008-08-06 Thread Brum

Just a status report on my questions:

I have downloaded and installed a newer version of SC ,7.1.1-22377.tgz
(Perl code) from http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/latest/7.1/,
hoping that my controller would now automatically update, but no luck.
Trying to update manually also produced the same dismal result as
before...

Having found some more info on the forum on this topic, I decided to
try another approach. I downloaded the file jive_7.1_r2749.bin from
http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.1.1/, and used WinSCP
to copy this file into the controller memory as /mnt/mmc/jive.bin,
([Settings Advanced Remote Login Enable SSH] gave me the
controller IP-address and passwd, user is root).

Choosing [Settings Advanced Software Update Update from SD card]
on the controller updated the unit correctly. I read somewhere that the
.bin-file had to be removed manually after installation, but on my unit
it was deleted automatically...

I still don't know whether this combination of SC/controller firmware
is correct, but it seems to work OK. A colleague at work is running
SC on a regular Linux server, and he claims his system updated
automatically after installing the 7.1, so it may be an issue with the
Perl version?)

I have found a small problem with the new firmware in my setup, though;
the controller regularly lose the wireless connection after a while, and
a reset is required. (This may be an issued with my WLAN router...
Haven't had the energy to dive into the problem yet...)
But after turning off the power saving options under [Settings
Advanced Factory Test Power management], it has not happened
again... I generaly keep the controller in its cradle on a small table
beside my comfy chair anyway, so life on battery power is not a big
issue yet. (This may change when the controller audio output is enabled
in a later update...)

[slim] Controller software update

2008-08-02 Thread Brum

Sorry for posting these questions, but I'm a novice in this area...
I have a Duet, with Squeezecenter running on a Qnap TS-209 Pro.

1. When upgrading SC to 7.1 a few days ago from
http://www.slimdevices.com/su_downloads.html (Perl code; version reads
7.1-22170 after updating), I was under the impression that the
Controller should also be updated to get some new functionality?

2. I have tried to update the Controller via the Settings - Advanced
menu. The Controller indicates new software version ? is available.
When trying to update, the display reads copying update for a few
seconds, then I get an error message, and am told to try again or
contact support. FW still reads 7.0.1 r2448; is this the latest
official release of software for the Controller?

3. I have found indications on this forum, that the main release
number should be the same for Controller and SC. I have also found some
software updates (jive_7.x_r.bin) which I believe are for the
Controller on http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/
In case an update should be done; which one is the correct for me? The
latest one under 7.1?

4. I guess that the Controller searches for updates in a directory in
the SC installation, and updates when new files are posted there. Can I
download the correct *.bin file, put it in the correct directory, and
try the manual update again, or do I have to use the SD-card method
described in other posts on the forum?

I hope someone is able to help with these questions...

[slim] How to list albums chronologically?

Hi,

possibility to change the order. Am I missing something, or is it not
possible change the name?

For bandwidht vs. quality reasons I'd rather use AAC streams when

The format is not supported by Slimdevices as standard so you will need

changes for AACplus (see the Wiki) and then add audio/aac to the

One thing that puzzles me is that the SB states that bitrate is 128kpbs

[slim] Connecting to several servers simultaneously?

2007-12-02 Thread . brum

Hi,

Is there a way to either connect the SB3 to several servers at the same
time, where some are outside of the local network, or to bridge remote
servers to the local one so that you can access the other servers'
contents?

Since the content can be losslessly packed and the connection of the
remote servers vary, the ideal solution would support connection
specific resampling settings. I guess that for the server at the
material providing end, the connecting server could look like a player,
for which a forced resampling can be set. But it would also require user
ids and passwords separate from the one main one for the web interface.

Any thoughts?

The closest I can think of would be to combine the contents of the
various servers at the file system / OS level - using shortcuts in the
main server out to the subsidiary ones. Slimserver would then just
see one filesystem, which it would be happy with, although it would of
course have no means of treating the different components differently.

Thanks for you reply. The drawback of file system integration is that
it won't make it possible to resample files at the source, and playing
FLAC files over ADSL lines is not feasible.

Perhaps a plugin could be made to do this...?
