Depending on the size of your library, I'd recommend at least an i3
otherwise library rebuilds will take forever. Note that Win 10 Home
does not have remote desktop server so you'd need to use a third-party
solution like VNC. Win 10 Pro is good to go out of the box.

In addition to Beelink mentioned above, Amazon has several reconditioned
and inexpensive HP ProDesk/EliteDesk units. If you want to keep noise
out of the picture, go for something fanless. Note that you may need a
monitor, keyboard, and mouse for initial setup.

Forget about mysqueezebox.com for the moment. "Not connected" means not
connected -to mysqueezebox.com- which is normal for a player that is
connected to a local instance of LMS. (A player can be connected to
mysqueezebox.com *or* to a local LMS, but not to both at the same time.
If you run a local server, you need not be concerned with
mysqueezebox.com.) The place you -should- be looking is in LMS
"Settings" on the "Information" tab where just below the "Media Scan
Details" section it will list "Player Information" for all devices
connected to your local LMS. Currently, you have none.

As asked above: your RPi is -wired- to your router, right? You can't
setup an RPi over wi-fi (unless you know more about what you are doing).
Have you tried a different ethernet cable? A different port on your
router? If you do this, reboot your RPi and still a problem, then you
have a defective RPi.

Looks like you install it on both mysqueezebox.com and via LMS plugins

Material under "Apps". There appear to be no other settings.

Re: [slim] SB1 and 24bit flacs, how to configure LMS to downsample to 16-bit?

2021-04-15 Thread Apesbrain

Try incorporating that FLAC decode step into your conversion. I think
the contents of your custom-convert.conf would look something like
this:

Code:

flc pcm * 00:00:00:00:00:00
# FT:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}
[flac] -dcs $START$ $END$ -- $FILE$ | [sox] -q -t wav - -t wav -b 16 -r
44100 -

Or

Code:

flc pcm * 00:00:00:00:00:00
# FT:{START=--skip=%t}U:{END=--until=%v}
[flac] -dcs --force-raw-format --endian=little --sign=signed $START$
$END$ -- $FILE$ | [sox] -q -t wav - -t wav -b 16 -r 44100 -

It's been a while and that may not be right, so you may need to
experiment. The "00:00:00:00:00:00" should be replaced with the MAC
address of your SB1.

You need to use a custom-convert.conf file with a FLAC conversion rule

Many people use it and it works fine. If you decide later to remove it,
just do a factory reset or re-write the firmware (both with "reinstall

optical; I don't remember particulars of USB as my DAC lacks it.

Or any browser or iOS/Android smartphone or tablet app. If you need a

These products are the obvious choice for anyone newly adopting the

"Sound quality" is an individual experience; only you can be the judge
of this. Both are worthy solutions and, under controlled conditions, I
doubt you'd be able to tell one from the other. It's been repeatedly
demonstrated, however, that "sound" quality is influenced by more than
sound waves hitting the eardrum. If you like the look of the
Transporter, or it provides you a certain pride of ownership, it may
indeed "sound" better to you.

If you're asking is the data somehow different as rendered to the DAC
via Touch or Transporter, the answer is no.

If you explain "dying" you might get some repair suggestions. It could
be a failing power supply.

Other options:
- Buy a used one off eBay
- Replace it with a Google Home/Nest device and use LMS "Castbridge"
plugin; I think there is an Alexa equivalent, but I'm not familiar with
it
- Replace it with a Sonos speaker or one that supports DLNA; both can be
seen by LMS
- Use any portable radio having an AUX IN with a Raspberry Pi running
piCorePlayer
- If you can find an Android "powered" device such as this one below,
you may be able to run SB player and SB controller apps:

For those rooms where I plan to have proper hi-fi equipment, I'd still

desired, any of the Google devices can easily become LMS playback points

I'm unclear on whether your friends already have a stereo or powered
speakers to use with LMS. If so, setting up a Raspberry Pi server/player
and controlling via mobile device is the way to go. If not, I'd take a
closer look at Sonos.

A pair of Sonos One can be configured for stereo or set up in different
rooms as needed. Same mobile control and no server necessary. If your
friends subscribe to Amazon Prime, Sonos will play the included Amazon
Music service.

This from an absolute LMS fanboy.

If your Lyngdorf amp is one with "Chromecast built-in", you might give
the LMS Chromecast plugin a try. From what I've read, it can support up
to 24/192. Can't guarantee gapless or ReplayGain support with these
plugins, though, so you'll have to test that.

Honestly, the best player for LMS is a Squeezebox or squeezelite-enabled
device. If you have no other Squeezebox players to support, I'd suggest
switching to a full-featured DLNA server like MinimServer and using the
Lyngdorf controller app.

Good to hear your mesh network has been solid. What brand/model do you
use?

If no other option, another technology similar to Homeplug is "Ethernet
Over Coax". EoC hardware is about twice the price of Homeplug, but
works in the same manner using the existing cable TV coax network. If
the router and target player are both near a cable TV outlet, this might
be worth a try.

Re: [slim] mySB.com/Duet/Poor ISP, what to address first?

2019-07-10 Thread Apesbrain

On the Arris router, I'd set up reserved IP addresses for both Duet
units (and for any PC that might later be used to run LMS). Here are
instructions for a similar unit:
https://arris.secure.force.com/consumers/articles/General_FAQs/TG862G-NA-IP-Address-Reserve-Setup/

Also, since he's using wifi I'd check to be sure his router is set to
the least-congested channel 1, 6, or 11. There are various cellphone
apps that let you check this. Here's one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer=en_US

Lastly, I'd install LMS (latest 7.9 build:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/index.php?ver=7.9) on one of
his PCs and rip a CD or two just to check if local server is any more
solid. (Also gets him started on ripping.)

If you do end up spending more money, the first thing I'd recommend is a
pair of Powerline adapters:
https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Powerline-ethernet-Adapter-TL-PA4010KIT/dp/B00AWRUICG/

Sure, just as I use a HiFiBerry HAT, but how much more elegant it would
be to just put S/PDIF on the board!

I wish they'd add a S/PDIF output. That 1/8" jack could easily be a
combo mini-optical/analog.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox App (1.1.4) on Android Devices no longer working?

2019-05-08 Thread Apesbrain

Orange Squeeze and Squeeze Commander can both connect to
mysqueezebox.com; I'm certain that Squeezer can also. Look for some
option to "Change server" and it should be available there.

You might also try Material Skin; search the forum.

"Official" Squeezebox app stopped working after Android 5.

Re: [slim] Keep running LMS and PLEX from PC or change to RPi and/or NAS

2019-03-06 Thread Apesbrain

OP, why don't you turn the old PC into a full-time server, stick it in a
closet, and keep running all that stuff on it? If it's doing the things
you need, switching to a NAS or RPi isn't going to make things any
better. My setup is very similar to yours, but on a headless box out of
the way and wired directly to my router. I manage it and move things
on/off of it using Remote Desktop. Because it's a server, I leave it
powered on all the time; that's up to you.

Of course, we'll all have to deal with Win 7 "end of life". I figure
I'll wait to see what that involves and try to keep running it for as
long as possible.

P.S. I don't see any mention in your post of your backup routine and
just want to make sure you have one. A "backup" is not a backup unless
it's off-site.

Thanks for the reply. For me, this "spinning reconnect" is much more
frequent. I think it has something to do with the way my Samsung phone
manages waking up and getting back on wifi. It's worse with Orange
Squeeze; another app I like but which fails to reconnect several times a
day and has to be restarted. Squeeze Commander usually finally makes
the connection after spinning 5-10 seconds.

I'm still using SC on an Android 7.0 device. It and the "official"
Squeezebox app are my favorites in terms of UX. Unfortunately, the
official app stopped working a few Android versions ago.

Just curious, do you find when you pick up your device and switch back
to SC that it takes 10 seconds or so (spinning circle) to "reconnect"
with your server?

If you don't want those big RG values, you can amplify the files. Just
amplify each track by the same amount. 12dB should do it.

Sorry about the image, but vBulletin Android has a nasty habit of
deleting posts if you try to edit. Only way I could get it back.

The edit I was trying to make was to reinstall LMS "as administrator".
That should reset port settings.

Re: [slim] Rebuffering problems AFTER a Win 10 update

2018-12-24 Thread Apesbrain

Frustrating. Some things I'd try:

- Unsynchronize all players and see if better with just one playing
- Turn off everything; restart in order starting as far upstream as
possible, e.g. ONT/gateway or cable modem. Let each device fully start
before moving on. Touches should be last
- Re-read the Orbi manual and be sure it's configured properly, i.e. if
using it with a gateway, the gateway wireless should be disabled and the
Orbi set as "access point"
- Change your wireless channel: 1, 6, or 11
- Update to current LMS nightly build
- Run System Restore to reset your server to before the recent update.

Not sure what a Windows Update would have done to cause this issue. More
likely it is something about the Orbi interaction with your network that
has now decided to act up.

Does your server have a reserved IP address? Always a good idea. Are
SqueezeliteX settings (output device and server IP) still good?

Re: [slim] Can you advise me on a comprehensive home audio setup?

2018-11-25 Thread Apesbrain

I'm a die-hard Squeezebox fan, but with Sonos PLAY:1 going for as little
as $135 right now, it would be hard to recommend anything else. Buy a
few for the key rooms and add on as you can afford. If you want higher
fidelity, get a Play:5. If you want to plug it into an existing
receiver/HTIB, get a Sonos Connect. If you want Alexa support, buy a
Sonos One. Each room can be its own zone, or you can synchronize them
however you like. You can add a second speaker in a zone and configure
them as stereo. No server required; just copy your music to a portable
hard drive and hang it off your wireless modem, if possible. Control
via smartphone/tablet app. Supports internet radio and music streaming
services, too.

Another cool option are the Google Home devices. I have one and it
sounds surprisingly good; the Google Home Max should be even better.
Logitech Media Server can make your local music library available to
these players. For that matter, if you're running LMS on a PC somewhere
on your network then you can add however many zones you like using an
inexpensive Raspberry Pi player or any device that supports DLNA.

I've never heard of that. Is it a "feature"? Seems like a security
weakness.

Anyway, I recently purchased a Radio remote for $13 on eBay and it works
fine. Also works with Touch. Not sure about SB3/Transporter, but I don't
think there's any difference.

Re: [slim] Help! Wake on LAN suddenly not working for no obvious reason

Currently on Win 7, but I think Win 10 is similar. Type "Network and
sharing center" in taskbar and open. On left click on "Change adapter
settings". Right-click on your adapter and select "Properties". Click
on "Configure" and go to the "Power Management" tab. Be sure the
appropriate switches are enabled; should say something like "Allow this
device to wake the computer", "Wake on magic packet", or "Wake on
network broadcast". If unsure, post back with a list of available
options.
