Re: [slim] Setting up my system (2 x Touch Mac Mini)
Thank you, I have found the offending software update and have deleted it. I have also replaced my original Iomega drive with a G Technology 4Tb one and it's certainly quieter - not sure if it's going to be faster as it also seems to go into sleep mode when not in use. Anyway, I think I now have an good stable system and I hope to enjoy listening to lots of music. Thanks to everyone who contributed to helping this happen! Thanks but I have already read about this somewhere and I have searched extensively on the computer but I cannot find any update. Re: [slim] Setting up my system (2 x Touch Mac Mini)
Hi everyone and happy new year to you all! I'm sorry for my delayed response but over the holiday I decided to revisit my system after reading some of your comments. The very first thing I noticed was that somehow I had updated LMS to 7.7.2 I never meant that to happen as it does not work with Mac OSX 10.4. I discovered this ages ago so I guess an autoupdate must have taken place. Anyway, I'm back with 7.5.5 again and things are much faster. I also made one less folder on the music drive so now the path is: Music drive / Alphabetically labeled folders / Artist name folders / Album name folders and with these are the .aiff files and a cue log plus a .jpeg of the artwork. I also removed another couple of folders that contained hi-rez needledrops which I still have to decide what to do with but that's for the future. So, there's really only two things bugging me now. One is the way the Iomega Ultramax drive takes so long to wake up. It also has a fan that never stops running. Is there a better option to this? Also, for the life of me I can't stop LMS asking if I want to update the software. I have set the preferences to Not To Update. By the way, Aubuti asked about my system - it's a Mac Mini running OSX 10.4.11 with a 133GHz PowerPC Processor (not exactly a Ferrari, I know). There's 1 GB of ram in it. Thanks to all. Re: [slim] Setting up my system (2 x Touch Mac Mini)
It sounds as if you are using Music Folder, which is probably the slowest of browse methods, especially for someone with a lot of objects in the folder. So if you don't have the B folder further divided into sub-folders such as Jeff Beck, Beatles, etc. then you are really shooting yourself in the foot. Even if you have sub-folders for each artist in B, some of those 26 alphabetic folders are likely to have 200+ sub-folders. All of the other browse methods rely on the database that LMS builds, so browsing is both faster and more flexible. Maybe you're already using those and it's still too slow, but that isn't clear from your post. If you are using those methods and it's still too slow, then the issue could be an underpowered server, network latency, or something else. EDIT: You're confusing LMS and mysqueezebox.com (aka mysb.com for those of us too lazy to type the full name in forum posts), as well as confusing what each of them does. You definitely need LMS to play your local music. And no, mysb.com does keep a log of your music so that you can play it from remote locations. Rather, mysb.com gives you access to internet radio and online services such as Pandora, Deezer, Spotify, MOG, Rhapsody, Slacker, etc (depending on what country you live in) so that you can listen to music when your computer running LMS is switched off.[/QUOTE wrote: Thanks for you reply and sorry that I wasn't clear. Yes, the path to each artist would be as follows: Music (the drive name) / Music Folder / B / Jeff Beck / Name of Album. That's how I decided to do it about five years ago and I seemed like a good idea then. However, I have tried the search function to see if it was quicker and no, not really. I'm not sure what you mean by an underpowered server but I would be prepared to try a different drive for storage. My only criteria is that it is 4TB and most importantly, low power usage. [slim] Setting up my system (2 x Touch Mac Mini)
Hi, Firstly let me say that when I bought into the Logitech product I did not exactly know what I was letting myself in for. However, I wanted my cd library of approx. 3000 cds to be playable from either my house or work. I work next door so it's all on one ethernet system with one router. Music files are stored on a Firewire 800 4 terabyte drive (not a great idea I know) and they are all in .aiff format. On the drive they are stored in a music folder which is divided into 26 subfolders named A, B, C etc... with each artist is the folder by last name (ie. Jeff Beck is in folder B). An older Mac Mini is the computer. The problem with this system is that it is painfully slow to load up an album, no matter whether I use Search, or go into My Music and go to the folder I want (lets say B as I'm looking for Jeff Beck). Now I have since realised that the 4TB drive is a bad idea as it goes into sleep mode and is slow to wake. But even when it's awake, there's still an awful long wait before seeing what's in a folder. My question is - do I really need to be connected to the LMS at all? I don't feel I need the capability to play music from some other location over the internet. My understanding of LMS is that it keeps a log of your music so you can play it from remote locations. Am I correct in this? I'd really love to get this system working properly as I love the sound from the Touch. If accessing LMS is slowing down that process I would like to avoid it. Thanks for any advise received. [slim] Need advise on a Squeezebox system
Hi folks. This is my first time posting so I would just like to say hi from Dublin! I have just finished ripping my cd collection to HD using XLD (Mac ripper). Let me say that I am a Mac person and have little knowledge of the Windows OS. I am also very familiar with iTunes. So, here is the situation. I have three locations where I would like my music available. A) The recording studio. This has an analog console and the main speakers are ATC SCM 300s. B) The office. This has a pair of Dynaudio BM6a active speakers. C) Home, which is next door to the studio. Again, a pair of Dynaudio BM6a active speakers will be in the kitchen (hopefully!). The studio has a central machine room for computers, amps etc. There is an ethernet patchbay here and there are ethernet lines running to all three of the above locations. I was thinking of storing the HD in the machine room and getting a Mac mini. It is the next step I really need help with. The Squeezebox Touch looks like a great product with good D/A. Running an ethernet cable from the machine room to the studio and taking an analog output from the Touch to feed into the console seems simple enough. However, I'm unsure of two things. 1. When I run an ethernet feed to the office and connect a Touch, do I need a volume control for the Dynaudios and if so, can someone recommend one. I presume the Squeezebox does not control volume? This same question also applies to the Dynaudios in the house. I seem to recall hearing about a remote, maybe that would do it? 2. I have my heart set on not using WiFi as the ethernet is already there. However I do need to split the feed from the server output (Mac) to the three destinations. I guess a simple cat5 splitter will do the job. That's it for now. Thanks in advance for any advise. -- Beech Beech's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=47286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88125 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

toby10;634760 Wrote: Yes, Touch has volume control. Yes, a simple Cat5 switch will work within a wired network to share the network/internet. But I'd suggest describing your network details. I assume you have a router on your network? You only mention splitting ethernet after the Mac, that won't work. Thanks for the quick response. Good news on the volume control, that means one less expense although I've a feeling these something I havn't forseen. I'm under pressure from my 11 year old daughter to bring her cycling so I'll have to go. Will describe in more detail the Cat5 situation soon ... -- Beech Beech's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=47286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88125 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

epoch1970;634766 Wrote: Unless I am wrong Touch will do digital volume control, you erase some bits to lower the volume. That's what I'll go with for now ... full resolution will not be critical in the office or kitchen. In the studio is a different matter. I'll dedicate two channels for the touch on the conole. I don't want to get into a discussion where I am out of my depth re Cat5 and networking but I will attach an image of my patchbay (which I did not wire but did specify). Maybe I'm missing something simple here. How do I get the output from the Mac to the three Touches? -- Beech Beech's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=47286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88125 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

garym;634789 Wrote: You will install SqueezeBoxServer (SbS) on one of the MACs. This is your music database (you point SbS at your music library...doesn't matter if something else is also using the same library tracks. That is, the library could be used by itunes, foobar2000, winamp, etc. AND ALSO can be identified as your SbS library). download a version here and install on your Mac: http://www.mysqueezebox.com/download The Touch units will see this SbS on your local network and you can connect to it. You can play different things at the same time on all touch players or sync two or more to play the exact same thing. p.s. re digital volume. Yes you can do this. I'm no expert on this, but folks I respect report that you're really losing nothing as long as volume is above, say, 70%. This is because the Touch/SbS is using 24 bits for volume control do the bits you're losing are not bits that matter to the music output. (yes, this is a simple explanation and probably technically wrong, but this is the point anyways). Thanks so much for that. It's exactly what I needed to know. I'll order a Touch and pickup a secondhand Mac mini this weekend and make a start! It took an absolute age to get all my cds onto HD and I'm really looking forward to being able to access them a the touch of a button! -- Beech Beech's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=47286 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88125 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
