[slim] Remote works intermittently

2014-07-11 Thread Gus

I've got an 4 SB3's (vintage!) one of which has is sporadic in taking
instruction from its remote.

I've done a bit of testing with it and noticed that 1) if I take the
remote to one of the other SB3s, it works fine (so the issue appears to
be with that SB3, rather than the remote control).

The other thing is that when I first fire up the server in the morning,
it all works fine. It appears that the problem happens only after the
server's been running for awhile, typically from early evening onward.

Very strange. Can anyone offer up an explanation -- and, better yet, a
solution -- for this.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Gus

Re: [slim] Choppy info browser feed - how to fix?!

2011-02-20 Thread Gus

I've had a bit of a fool around with this and realised that after having
changed the scroll settings (under, Settings, Player, [name of player],
Display), nothing actually changes. Even if I alter between the
maximum and minimum values for Scroll Rate, Scroll Pause or Scroll
Pixels, the player doesn't alter how it streams at all (unlike in the
past).

I'm hoping this would offer some clue as to what's wrong. Any
suggestions gratefully received!

[slim] Choppy info browser feed - how to fix?!

2011-02-16 Thread Gus

Hi,

Some time ago, I encountered much the same problem, whereby my info
browser feed became choppy. I recently shifted from Ubuntu to Windows
Home Server (WHS) after a hiatus (had some probs getting my server to
sync, so made the switch). Anyway, on reinstalling everything I
encounted the issue again and returned to the solution that resolved it
(see here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47795).
Unfortunately, this time, the revised settings don't seem to improve
matters. Has anyone else found a solution, so I can get back to a
smooth scroll?!

Cheers,

It wasn't that and it's happened before with all my SBs doing it, so
appears to be originating from the server. Rebooting fixes it, but am
curious as to why it happens in the first place.

[slim] SB3 display cycling through brightness settings

2010-05-12 Thread Gus

hi all,

For some reason the display on my SB3 is cycling from bright to unlit
in a continual loop. I thought it might be something to do with when
the unit scans the library, but its not. Then tried updating the
firmware, but again, it's still cycling. Any ideas why this would
happen?

Cheers

Re: [slim] Home Server - Vortexbox MiniITX - Positive Experience

2009-04-20 Thread Gus

I can second the positive experience with MiniITX. I recently bought a
MiniITX PC in a Psile case, driven largely by the desire to find
something that had low power consumption. Then installed Ubuntu and
set it up with Wake-On-Lan and auto shutdown at the same time every
evening and it's been great. I'm not familiar with Vortexbox, but
sounds interesting...I'll have a look.

Re: [slim] Home Server - Vortexbox MiniITX - Positive Experience

It could be an option for you but depends on whether you are using your
MiniITX box for anything over and above, email, internet etc.

Hmmm. My Linux skills are rudimentary, so probably a
non-mainstream-OS-version-too-far for me. Thanks for clarifying
though. The automation on the ripping/tagging sounds great.

[slim] No Sound on SB3 Headphone Jack

2009-04-18 Thread Gus

I've got 4 SB3s and for the first time tried listening by plugging in
headphones to the jack at the back of the unit. No sound is coming
out. I recalled (perhaps in earlier versions of SC?) there being an
enable/disable for headphones(?) but can't seem to find it after
trawling through all the settings. I've also tried plugging my
headphones into the other SB3 units, but none seem to have it enabled.
I've never used IR Blaster.
Under Setting/Player/Audio the relevant settings are...
Disable Outputs when Off
Preamp volume settings: 0

Any suggestions what I need to do to get headphone mojo?

My bbc ticker streams without any problem, but WeatherTime won't work.
I got it working fine under 7.1 by modifying the install file (after

despite making a similar ammendment for 7.2 I can't make it work.

Strangely, if I go to the Extras menu on the SB, it shows up, but when

nothing happens.

Re: [slim] hourly consumption of bandwidth using internet radio?

2008-09-08 Thread Gus

A shame to hear the UK's steadily intro'd bandwidth limits. I had unltd
with a fair use policy when I was there. Fair use is no doubt
unsettling as it can be arbitrary, but I'd actually prefer that
approach more than the cut-and-dry (and expensive!) cap as it means
you're not watching the clock every month. This assumes the ISP gets
that if they're too petty about interpreting it they'll suffer a
backlash.
As I say this, I realise that few ISPs seem to care about such
things...but you can always hope.
In Australia I'm on an ASDL plan that offers 2gb for A$30 (US$25) a
month. The highest allowance is 15gb for A$100, so you can see how out
of bounds something like the 250gb limit would be, Goodsounds!

[slim] hourly consumption of bandwidth using internet radio?

2008-09-07 Thread Gus

I live in a place where unltd broadband isn't available - usage is
typically limited and pretty expensive (relative to North America,
Britain and France). As a result I've got a 2gig allowance from my ISP
each month.

Can anyone give me an idea of how much of this allowance I'd burn an
hour on a 128 or 192 kbps stream. While no doubt it's simple maths, I'm
not really sure what the calculation is - and we're early in the month
and I'd hate to get it wrong and use up all my allocation.

Thanks!

As my scrolling on RSS feeds was choppy I made some changes, following
