[slim] iTunes artwork

2009-10-10 Thread KeithL

As someone who could not be bothered with messing with album art on my
Squeezebox I just took it as read that it was a huge faff. Squeezecenter
7.4 installs iTunes album art by default. Even iPeng on my iTouch now
has album art. Well done Squeezebox.

[slim] Slim Server and Firefly Server

2008-01-04 Thread KeithL

Now that Roku (Pinnacle) have halved the price of their Soundbridge
radio, I've bought one for the kitchen.

Although it will run Slim Server, it comes up really ugly on the
screen. I've read the Roku forum which suggests using their Firefly
Server for iTunes. It's much snappier than Slim Server and looks the
business.

My question is, will there be any long term problem with running two
servers for the same music directory, assuming I have sufficient
bandwidth?

Thanks for that reassurance.
Out of interest, why are you going to flac in the first place.
Why not straight to wav or aiff using iTunes?
I've read EAC is meant to give an exact copy, but I've experience zero
problems with iTunes doing the ripping.

[slim] Nas

2007-11-21 Thread KeithL

Is there a definitive guide to setting up slmdevices on a nas? I've just
incorporated a nas at work at the second attempt, switching from a
totally useless Netstore nas to a speedy and competent Lacie Ethernet
server. I know the Lacie is 4 times the cost of the Netstore, but it
performs at least 10 times better. What are the pros for running a sb3
from a nas? Can the nas go to sleep and reliable wake up with a cat5
conection?

[slim] Several sb3s

I only have a single sb3 and for the time being don't intend to extend

[slim] iTunes ripping spped

2007-02-09 Thread KeithL

I have noticed my desktop emac will rip an album to aiff with error
correction on in about 2 minutes, ripping at times up to 35 times real
time. My powerbook takes about 14 minutes an album, never going above 8

processor power? I haven't experimented yet to see if there is any
audible difference.
emac is G4 1.25, 750m memory, pioneer 8 x dvd drive, 320g hd @7200rpm.
powerbook is G4 1.5, 1250m memory, built-in 4 x dvd drive, 80g hd

I run an old g4 emac with an external 320g usb drive. I let itunes rip
cds into aiff, 16 bit, 44.1hz. On average an album takes about 2
minutes to rip. As mentioned, if you're in a hurry, do a manual rescan
using the Slim Server program to update quickly. I use an identical usb
drive to backup the drive with the music. I have no sound quality issues
with the above method and I pump my sb3 into a decent hi-fi system.

[slim] Slow Transporter

2007-01-12 Thread KeithL

I am trying out a Transporter, using ethernet.
I have encountered two problems so far.
After playing for about 45 minutes, the sound disappeared, but the VU
meters were still moving showing signal. I couldn't get sound back and
had to unplug the mains and restart the Transporter. This happened
twice, the second time after only a few minutes of playing.
Also I noticed a couple of albums playing slow. Not ridiculously slow,
but definitely out of time. At first I thought there was a problem
server end so I rebooted and re-ripped the album. It sounded fine. Then
I noticed it on another album. I stopped the track, skipped to another
album, then went back and it was back up to speed.
Such goings on never happened with my sb3.
What's happening.

[slim] Another wireless lan question

2007-01-07 Thread KeithL

The house is arranged with the wireless router in a cupboard upstairs,
the slim server is in the cellar and the sb3 is on the ground floor. It
all works perfectly as a wlan. But in order to get the slim server to
wake-on-lan (WOL) it has to be connected to a lan by an ethernet cable.

I cannot get an ethernet cable from the router to the slim server in
the cellar.

The slim server does not fit into the same cupboard as the router.

And there isn't a phone line for the router in the cellar.

I can get an ethernet cable from the slim server to the sb3. As
connected up at present I get streaming from the slim server to the sb3
and WOL using ethernet but no internet radio. Or if using Wlan, I get
streaming and internet radio but no WOL. Is there any other way of
connecting it up bearing in mind the constraints of my house.

Is the above a good method of ripping? At the moment I have a bare bones
