[slim] Is this OK?

2011-11-22 Thread Lewis Moon

I have a dead Slim Devices SB3 in great physical shape with wall wart
and remote. Not doing me any good. PM me if you have a need.

If it's not PK to post this here PM me and I'll turn this into a post
waxing poetic about my new SB3.

I use two long 50' runs of very basic RJ5 ethernet through two switches
in my home with no such issues, at least not in any way that effects
 their connected devices including audio.

PSB (Pre Squeezebox) I ran cable over the same route from a DAC in the
computer room to the stereo in the living room. I had to resort to an
optical cable between the computer and the DAC, instead of the USB, in
order to knock out 60 Hz of chocolatey badness.

[slim] Wired Installation: possible ground loop?

2011-11-17 Thread Lewis Moon

I'm thinking of running my SB3 via an ethernet cable to guard against
interference from all the other electronics in the house (a problem in
the past). The cable run will be about 40 ft. Can ethernet cables

This ^^^

I might also add that better is highly subjective and depends on
everything from one's musical tastes, to your choice of speakers and
amp, to the range of your hearing.
Case in point: I LIKE bright. This is probably because I'm over 50
and my upper range hearing isn't what it used to be. It may also be
because I love acoustic jazz and chamber folk rather than techno and
other bass heavy music.
Finally, your first good DAC will color your opinion of all the others
that may come, so do the research (HeadFi is a good start, just read
ALL the reviews) and spend the money to get a good one.

[slim] Need to replace the SB3....which?

2011-10-20 Thread Lewis Moon

Well, my old SB3 gave up the ghost. First I dropped it and blew the
display, but because I run it wired to cut down on interference, I
still could run it with my android tablet and Squeezecommander.
Last week it wouldn't connect (couldn't find it). I tried rebooting
everything and unplugging and replugging the SB3 but nothing works.
Given the blown display, it's time for another. I can't decide
between another SB3 or a Duet receiver. I like having the unit
hod...without the blue light and I also like doing the controlling on
the tablet or my laptop.

However, sound quality and build quality are a must. I ran the SB3
through a Beresford TC-7520 DAC and loved it and will probably use the
same type of set up. Any suggestions? Money IS a factor.

Re: [slim] Need to replace the SB3....which?

2011-10-20 Thread Lewis Moon

I wondered about the tough set up w/o display. To be honest, yes the
touch looks like the right choice, but I really would rather NOT have
the display. In this day and age I see no reason to have another
display cluttering up the view space when it can be controlled by other
units. When my SB3 display went dead I hid the unit behind the receiver
and liked it that way.

You can also set all of the screensavers (while playing, while
inactive, while off) to a blank screen (it actually turns the display
off). The screen will then only be active when you use the remote or
the touchscreen. If you use some other user interface, it should never
 display anything.

Uhh...small things hide much easier than big things. I only have so
much space. I guess I really want the Duet. With pretty much ALL of
the new video, etc units (roku) being designed with a small set top box
and on screen set up, I wonder why Logitech is still bucking the trend
and going with such a large unit. Really, the touch screen is
redundant.

[slim] ACK! I dropped my SB3!

2010-10-01 Thread Lewis Moon

Well, I screwed the pooch: I knocked my beloved SB3 off the stereo rack
while I was wiring a new receiver. It powers up (red light in the
Toslink bay) but it has no display. I figure I'm functionally screwed.
Any chance of recovery? Anyone doing affordable repairs? If not, I'll
need a new one. I loved the SB3...what is the consensus on the best
audio bang for the buck player otherwise?

I never really realized just how much I relied on my SB3. Probably
fully 90% of my music listening takes place with the SB.

the wireless. For example, it could be the source of your display
problems. It's certainly worth a shot.

Logitech is no longer doing out-of-warranty repairs, and I haven't
heard of anyone else doing them either. If it turns out to be something
that can't be fixed, or can't be fixed for less than $100-150, then you
should seriously consider replacing it with the SB Touch. Whether or
not you like the LCD touchscreen, the Touch is a worthy successor to
the SB3, with some significant improvements in audio quality.

I've had it completely apart (card out and everything) and back
together. Nothing. I've gone over the solder joints with a magnifying
glass and a probe and I couldn't pick up anything. I am SO bummed.

for the SB3, but just in case I hope you had it set to automatic update

You could scavenge for a replacement display from an old SB2 or SB3,

I won't be swapping out screens...I saw the solder joints. Any way to

No problem. Open up a web browser on the netbook and enter the address

the IP address of the the desktop that is running Squeezebox Server. So
if the desktop's IP address is 192.168.0.3, you would type
http://192.168.0.3:9000/. This tells the netbook to connect to the mini
web server that runs as part of Squeezebox Server on your desktop.

If you don't know the IP address of the desktop you can find out, but
the exact steps depend on the operating system. If it's Windows you can
open a command window and type ipconfig (without quotes) and it will
 tell you the IP address.

Depending on how your network and desktop are set up, you might be able
to connect using the name of your desktop.

I type in ipconfig and the command box flashes and goes away in a
blink.
