Very interesting. I've been giving some thought to what I will switch
to when the SB is no longer viable and this device is high on my list.
My current LMS usage consists of:
- Spotify (using Triode's plugin)
- Local music (just a small library of things not on Spotify)
- Tunein
- Multi player sync is very important to me.

If I replaced all my players with Chromecast Audio devices, I'm not sure
why I'd want to continue using LMS at all. What are the key features
that would make me want to keep LMS?

crashplan.com offers an option where you can ship them a drive for the
initial backup at an extra cost. Otherwise, yeah it can take quite a
while. Either way, once the initial backup is done, it's kept up to
date incrementally which seems to work fine for my ~2.5 TB.

For anyone considering cloud backup, I'm very happy with crashplan.com.
It's about $60 per year for unlimited storage. The initial backup can
take quite a while depending on how much data you have, but from then on
it just updates itself incrementally. Upload speed seems to be limited
only by my own cable upload speeds. I chose them over other cloud based
backup services because of unlimited storage and Linux support.

tread carefully. In hindsight had I known what I know now I would have

Yes, thanks, I'm aware of that. I've been playing with a Pi and a

[slim] Recommend good quality USB speakers

As a non-audiophile, I've been thinking about how I might use
Squeezelite with a Pi/Wandboard/etc as a tabletop replacement. Can
anyone recommend good quality USB speakers (AC powered) suitable for

quality to the Audioengine A2 ($200), or slightly better? Assume that
all content is 44.1/16 or less.

Or is this the wrong way to think about it and should I just plan on
buying good powered speakers and a separate USB DAC in line with my
price/performance point?

However, if you plan to use an external USB DAC it is likely, (but there

It is the only released image. But I also run CSOS on the Beaglebone.
Castalla runs a Fedora 18 derivative on the Cubieboard. So I believe
there are several boards we could support, if we have the time and
 resources to do so.

The Wandboard seems like overkill for those of us not wanting to run LMS
on the player. There will probably be less expensive player-only
solutions, especially if the Raspberry Pi ever gets their USB drivers

To add to this - we specifically picked the Wandboard for two reasons
(and you can see some agonising on this on the thread re hardware):
 1) We know it supports USB Dacs well as it has hardware ehci based

limitations in this respect and I would not want to hold out hope that
Pi ever fixes high speeds iso transfers.
 2) The CPU on a module approach makes it much easier and faster for John

 not the processor/memory etc.

So yes if we looked for a lowest cost cpu platform we could have picked
something else, but we picked the Wandboard to get us good flexibility
and good performance which we believe is most important for this
project. That said the software will run on other platforms and there
are many people running it on Pi already (in cases where the usb
 problems don't cause concerns)

Gen1 as I'm envisioning it now will have the above plus HDMI out, coax
S/PDIF and headphone jack. I'm going to include the module connector for
the wifi module I've mentioned, we will have to decide whether we want
to go that route or use onboard wifi on the dual wandboard. Putting the
connector on the board doesn't add much to the complexity/cost.

Will Gen1 also have GPIO? Maybe it's just me, but I see value in having
presets even on a display-less device.

 2) Compiling OS/Building a bootable image/Writing automated scripts/Etc
(this will break out much further in the future) - Dustin (Me)
 3) Squeezelite Player - Triode
 4) Case design - ? (Any designers out there with CAD abilities)
 5) Distribution - ? (Depending if we need to ship to just one location
and then send out to buyers from there)
 6) Marketing/Name of the new product- This is really for in the future
but never to early to start thinking about it
 7) Website Creation/Technical Hosting of files, scripts, news, shipping
updates, product updates, etc. - (Not sure we want to have these items
spread all throughout this forum...I think we should have a dedicated
 site)

Probably should add controller apps to this list. I presume that the
Logitech phone app is at or near its end of life for maintenance. I
suppose Pippin and others will continue to support and develop their
products as long as there is a revenue stream, but it appears that
SqueezeCommander, as an example, is no longer maintained. It would be
nice to have an open-source multi-platform app as part of this project.

 There are two aspects here:
Software licenses (probably for mp3, WMA, and AAC) and patent fees (at

cost that makes them prohibitive at low volumes.

Note also that, as per Michael, Logitech pays some money to TuneIn for
each player sold. It's not clear how much or exactly what this enables
that is not available from TuneIn for free.

Interesting. I have a Revue and consider it to be a huge
disappointment. Google seems poised to do a Google TV 2.0 relaunch.
We'll have to wait and see whether Logitech rolls the dice on Google TV

squeezebox client. That would be unfortunate.

But hey, the squeezeboxes still work, and will do long time after
 Logitech stops supporting them.

I suspect that there's still a lot of churn left in the market for
online streaming and cloud music services. Without active support,
it's possible that our Squeezeboxes will never support the most popular
music services 5 years from now.

IMO, landscape mode is very important on tablets.

2011-04-10 Thread Mark Miksis

On the recent betas, the volume slider on the NP screen changes volume
for all synced players, even if don't sync volume was selected. Is
this intended? I'm pretty sure older versions allowed you to change
only volume on the selected player. With the newer betas, I'm not sure
there is a selected player when on the NP screen and some players are
synced.

Most non-market tablets have a work-around that allows you to install
the market. Archos probably does, although not officially. Your
tablet experience in general will be improved if you take the time to
figure out how to do this.

That said, it would be nice if Logitech also posted the apk somewhere
for download. Maybe even nightly builds for testers.

I'm assuming it uses S3, but I don't know. Also, AFAICT, there is no

OT, it also seems to want to compete with other (non-music) cloud

It's actually a more general thing: Gestures generally test very bad in
 user acceptance tests.
It's one of these things: Everybody is making a big fuss about all the
cool gesture-enabled features of iThingies and Multitouch and
everything and if you then go out and test this stuff in market
research you find that what people want (or, to be precise: what they
tell you that they want) is deep menu structures and textual menus.

Interesting. I'm not a UI designer, but as a user I disagree. It's
all in my head, but there's just something that seems less intrusive
about swiping to the left or right side of a larger virtual screen when
compared to the alternative of moving up or down a level of hierarchy.
Probably just me.

Why is that? Because all this testing is with users who are new to an
application and hence had no time to learn a usage scheme or get used
to it. So they prefer what they immediately understand.
It's the same if you look at what people who decide after trying Apps
 base their decision on.

So I imagine that the Logitech app will feel quite natural to someone
who uses (and likes) the SP interface but has little general android
experience. On the other hand, the experienced android user will find
it just weird that, for example, some screens have a back button on the
screen in addition to the native one on the device.

Re: [slim] Android Controller App

Hmm, not sure what to think compared to squeezecommander. It'll take
some time to get used to it. Some first impressions:
- squeezecommander is faster.
- I like the ability to tap the player name and get a player selector
screen. But I prefer the way that squeezecommander shows you sync
groups from it's player list.
- The landscape tablet split screen seems to work intermittently. Does
this require a minimum Android version? I'm testing on a 7 tablet
running CM7 (gingerbread).

I've gotten really used to swipe-left and right for players and
playlist screens on squeezecommander and really miss those shortcuts.

AFAICT it's just larger on a larger screen with no user control. On my

Flatterman has said he plans to release a tablet version in the future.
